manner in the order that payment has been received. Orders typically go out within 10 days of payment. Occasionally, we
get behind schedule due to the volume of figures needing our attention. Our priority is to make sure the items are properly
packed to avoid damage. Please be understanding if shipment exceeds our goal. Items purchased on Day 1 will be sent
separately and at a different time than items purchased on Day 2 of the sale.
Domestic Shipping: Orders will be shipped by the USPS. A fee of $9 per lot will be charged for shipping and handling.
Insurance is included for total orders under $500. Total orders over $500 will require additional insurance at a rate of $1

1. Old Toy Soldier Auctions USA acts as an agent for the seller.
The contract of the sale of the property is between the seller and
the buyer. No statements made within this catalog or made by a
representative of or employee of Old Toy Soldier Auctions shall be
deemed to be a warranty, representation, or assumption of liability
with respect to the property’s age, condition, size, quality, variety,
importance, provenance, or historical relevance. All property is
sold “as is” 7 days after delivery and/or 30 days from sale date.
2. Buyers are responsible for satisfying themselves concerning
the condition of the property.
3. The Auctioneer will be solely responsible for determining the
bidding increments.
4. The Auctioneer will be the final judge in deciding which bidder
has won an item. In the event of a dispute, the auctioneer at his
discretion, shall decide whether to reopen bidding or not.
5. Absentee Bids: We are authorized to execute bids on your
behalf if notified in writing or by phone. Complete the enclosed
Absentee Bid Form and return to OTS Auctions BEFORE the
absentee bid deadline of Friday, June 1, 2012, 7:00 pm. We can
not accept “Buy” bids. In the event that two identical bids are
received, the first bid form received by OTS Auctions will have
preference.
6. Phone Bids: Phone bids will also be accepted. To qualify for a
phone line the same procedure of authorization required for an
absentee bid is required. A backup bid in the event a party cannot be
reached by phone is not required, but strongly recommended. There
are a limited number of phone lines available. In the event that there
are more requests than lines available, preference will go to the
highest bidding parties. In the event, whether human or technical,
that a phone call is not made, disconnected or the bidder can not
be reached at the number left, the backup bid will be executed. OTS
Auctions cannot guarantee that phone bids will be executed.
10. Items not claimed within three months of sale date will be
considered forfeited and will become the property of Old Toy
Soldier Auctions, USA.

Why did I not win the lot that sold for $50 when my bid was $50?
There are two possibilities: The bids are executed in the order they are received. Many people bid the high estimate, if
we have multiple bids at $50, the winner is the person whose $50 bid was received first. Or your bid was “wrong footed”
meaning that your bid was an increment off. If you leave a bid of $50 and the lot opens at $30 to someone else, you then bid
$35, another bidder bids $40 you then bid $45 and unfortunately someone comes in on your bid of $50 and the item sells to
them. It is impossible to predict or plan your initial bid. You may give us a “ +1”, “+2” or even a “+3” bid which allows us to
bid 1, 2 or 3 increments over you high bid. However, we can not accept a “Buy” bid, you must provide us with a number.
How much should I bid?
We provide estimates for each lot based on our experience. We tend to be conservative with our estimates. Generally a bid
within the estimate has a 50% chance of winning the lot. A bid of the low estimate has a 30% chance of winning the lot and
a bid of the high estimate a 70% chance of securing the lot for the bidder. It is not uncommon for an item to go several times
the high estimate if there are two or more parties with serious interest.

September 21, 2012 in a live sale event.

In time, it wasn’t just his sales prices I found
valuable. If I needed a photo, Mitch was there,
often stopping everything and taking one for
me, if he didn’t already have it in his files. With
my “Collecting Foreign-Made Toy Soldiers”, he
really went beyond the pale. As I acknowledged
in the book, Mitch contributed so much, in the
way of histories, listings, prices, photos, and
where he didn’t have the information himself,
contributors, that it was a wonder it wasn’t his
name on the cover instead of mine.
In a hobby with a remarkable number of good
people, K. Warren Mitchell was a standout.
He was a major dealer with an excellent
reputation, but he went much further than
that. I don’t know if he loved toy soldiers or the
hobby, but he seemed to. He did everything
he could for both, consistently providing new
information on the subject of soldiers, and
taking slews of new and important photos.
In each instance, it was with time and money
lost, just for the good of the hobby.
I remember my first contact with Mitch.
It was by phone. He was new to the hobby
and asked where I got the prices my books
recorded. I told him that I got them from
him, as well as others. That persuaded him to
come up with his prices on his own.

Come to think of it, the book itself was his
idea! In any event, if my memory is correct, I
did pay him a share of the royalties, and the
same memory suggests that was my decision;
that Mitch never asked for a dime.
Politically, Mitch and I couldn’t have been
further apart. He was an arch-conservative
and he knew I was a hopeless liberal, but
unlike the the Congress of recent years, we
had no trouble remaining friends. In addition
to our mutual interest in toy soldiers, we
shared a love of jazz, and here again Mitch
was his usual generous self; I treasure the two
jazz DVDs he gifted me with, and enjoyed a
number of jazz videos he emailed me.
I’ll certainly miss him.

At about the age of 12, I suddenly lost interest.
Sport and girls had entered the picture. As regards
the girls part, I should have stuck with the soldiers.
(Sorry Helen that was a joke.)
Fast forward fifteen years to the mid 1970’s. I was
a Pan Am flight attendant based on the East Coast
and making frequent trips to London. I’d spot toy
soldiers in the antique shops and it brought back
many childhood memories. I’d pick up an occasional
figure, usually plastic and soon realized that my
interest hadn’t ended but had merely been dormant.
As a youngster I don’t recall the first time I received
toy soldiers. I remember having several and most
were of the plastic, olive drab variety. But on special
occasions, like Christmas and birthdays, I’d get a
box of Britains. It was the best feeling in the world.
They were painted, they had substance, and I’d spend
hours setting up battles in my room.
At the age of ten, on a family trip to Philadelphia,
my parents took me to a large department store. The
toy section was huge and there were glass display
cases filled with Britains. I was dumbfounded; this
must be what heaven looks like. My Dad said “pick
something out”, and when I chose a boxed set of
Confederate cavalry, I was over the moon.
In 1977 I transferred to Honolulu and trips to
London went from 2 or 3 a month to 1 or 2 a year.
A chance meeting with a flight attendant friend
changed everything. She was leaving on vacation
to see her family in England. On a whim, I asked
her to pick up a set or two of Britains. When she
returned with some figures—including that identical
set of Confederate cavalry purchased years earlier in
Philadelphia—I asked her where she found them.
She told me she had attended a toy soldier auction
at Phillips Auction House. (Years later, when I
reminded her of how much money she had cost me,
she simply replied, ”That’s what all my men say.”)
I was intrigued and after some delays, went to my
first auction in March of 1982. I was immediately
hooked. At that time, Phillips held six or seven
auctions a year and over the next few years, I didn’t
miss many. I asked a lot of questions, listened and

tried to educate myself on the subject. At a colleague’s
suggestion, I introduced myself to Ed Ruby and
learned more in 45 minutes than I’ve learned since,
most notably the difference between accumulating
and collecting and the goal of acquiring quality and
rarity whenever possible.
Over time, I managed to build a significant preand post-war collection. Later, I started reselling
duplicates and attending shows as a vendor. The
pleasure it has given me is immeasurable. From
the acquisition of that treasured set to the many
valued friendships, it’s been a wonderful ride. And
the enthusiastic, unconditional support of my wife
Helen has only enhanced the experience. She is truly
one in a lifetime.
I’ll never completely stop collecting. However, it’s
time to thin things out a bit, so I decided to sell the
majority of my pre-war collection. It’s my sincere
hope that it gives future collectors the same fun and
satisfaction I’ve experienced all these years.
