Random Thoughts
Tyler Jensen returns to
winner’s circle in Odessa
Tony Franklin, Publisher
Time marches on, and stops
for no man they say.
Last week I celebrated my
43rd birthday, not quite a birthday week like Genie orders up,
but a birthday just the same. I
still enjoy b-day’s greatly and
really don’t mind getting older
at all. As long as everyone else
gets older too then I’m good.
My dad is going to his 50th
class reunion this week, which
is just an amazing number.
Karleen Reynolds just
turned 50, which I don’t believe
is true either, but I guess it is.
And then you have the real
news of the week; Derek Jeter
playing his last game at Yankee
Stadium.
My favorite baseball stadium is old Yankee Stadium.
My first game there was about
10 years ago; Jeter led off the
third inning with a solo homer,
the rest of the team then preceded to score five more runs,
then Jeter ended the inning
with a ground out and the fan
in front of me yells @?!”?! You
Jeter!!
Yankee fans are the worst
and best I suppose. They score
six runs in the inning and they
still yell at the captain!
Yes I am a Yankee hater,
but I must admit I watched
the entire game last Thursday.
Bob Costas was at his overemphasizing best which was a
total beating, but I still loved it.
After the last couple of
weeks with NFL news, it was
very sports refreshing to have a
positive story be played out.
Derek Jeter is completing 20
seasons with the NY Yankees
and he did it in a very positive,
no-drama, no bad-stuff way.
The way it can and should be
done.
He lived his dream at the
highest level, got to go out on
his own terms, and leaves the
game with nothing but positive
thoughts.
Take notice folks; we won’t
see that again for a very long
time. Peyton Manning for all
his greatness won’t leave like
that, Dirk Nowitzki will be
close but doesn’t have national
impact, Albert Pujols, nope.
I’ve racked my brain and can’t
think of a good dude, huge
winner, adored by fans, played
for only one team athlete that
will be retiring in the next
decade.
Jeter is it, and I loved
watching the show.
Yes, time marches on, I
hope we all make the impact
we wanted to. We only get one
lap around this planet; make it
a good run.

FOUNDED AND PUBLISHED BY JOE GENNARO FROM 1956-2009
Odessa, Texas — Tyler
Jensen of Fort Worth, Texas,
dominated the finals field
to win his 14th Professional
Bowlers Association regional
title in the fourth annual PBA
Odessa Southwest Open Sunday
at Astro Bowl. Jensen topped
last week’s runner-up Nathan
Bohr of Austin, Texas, by 82
pins for his first title of the
2014 season.
Jensen, who won $2,500,
opened Sunday’s finals with
a small lead over Bohr and
C.J. Thomas from Shreveport,
I predicted they would go
85-77 and no playoff’s. I also
said that the LA Angels would
finish third. Genie said no
playoffs, and Sports Illustrated
had the Rangers winning 90
games.
Results time…Rangers
finish last in the division and
the second worst record in
baseball. The LA Angels win
the AL West and finish with
the second best record in
baseball…that is just about as
painful as the Rangers finish. I
really dislike the Angels…sorry
Milligan family.

I wish I had some bowling
news to talk about, but there’s
not much going on the big
bowling world right now.
The USBC did make some
staffing reductions last week,
sources say it was around 12
people which further lowers
a staff that was at around
140 people when they moved
to Texas. Sources tell me
they now have around 80-90
employees.
Good that they are running
leaner, but sad for anyone to
lose their job.
The real kicker is that the
vast majority of the people that
work at USBC are so incredibly
passionate about bowling. They
live it, breathe it, and work it,
or at least they used to.
Louisiana. Bohr started the
match play finals with a 290
game to momentarily grab
top position. Johnson then
overtook Bohr with a 269
game, but Jensen regained the
lead two games later and never
relinquished. Winning six of
his eight matches and tying
another, Jensen ended with a
21-game total of 5,094 pins.
Jensen’s only loss in the
match play was to Bohr in the
final position round match,
224-216, a victory that allowed
Bohr to claim second place over
Houston’s Shawn Maldonado.
Bohr had 5,012 total pins, 45
ahead of Maldonado. Bohr
earned $1,650 and Maldonado
collected $1,150 for third.
The Southwest Region’s
next event is the PBA Tomball
Southwest Open at Tomball
Bowling Center, in Tomball,
Texas, Sept. 26-28. The Tomball event will include the
third-and-final PBA Women’s
Regional qualifying event. The
Southwest Region will host
PBA50 Regional events the first
two weekends in October, at
Tyler Jensen
Junction City Bowl in Junction
City, Kansas, Oct. 3-5, and at
Shreveport’s All Star Lanes,
Oct. 10-12.

Anthony
Lavery-Spahr
This week’s high male is
Anthony Lavery-Spahr with a
287-286-280 for an 853 series
in the Jack “N” Jill league at
Plano Super Bowl.
Where were you born? Rhode
Island. I moved to Texas when
I was 12 because my dad was
transferred to Houston. After I
graduated high school, I moved
to Dallas to go to University of
North Texas to study International Business and Finance.
What ball did you throw?
Roto Grip Totally Defiant,
Anthony drills his equipment
at Lewisville or Plano
Thoughts on the big series?
I was subbing and having fun.
I was just trying to help them
win since they had faith in me
to ask me to sub. The last game
in the tenth frame, I thought,
I’ve already got the 830 so let’s
see if I can just finish one game.
I just wanted to strike out.
What is your all-time favorite
movie? American History X (I
had to reference IMDb and it
stars Edward Norton and Beverly D’Angelo (Ellen Griswold
in Christmas Vacation))
What is your favorite
restaurant? Outback – I order
the steak and chicken combo
Where did you take your best
vacation? My best vacations
are my trips back to Rhode
Island when I get to see my
family. My grandparents and
all of aunts and uncles still live
there, so it’s great when I get to
go back and get to spend time
with them.
What is your favorite song of
all time? Sleeping Walking by
Bring Me the Horizon. I have
a CD in my car with about 20
songs on it, so that is one that I
listen to before I bowl.
What’s the best advice you’ve
ever received? Make everything
you do count and don’t have
any regrets. Every thing happens for a reason, whether it’s
good or bad, so just take it as it
is and don’t have any regrets.
If you were the commissioner
of all things bowling for a day
what would you change? I think
I would take any sponsorship I
could get that is willing to put
money into the game. Miller
High Life and Budweiser were
big sponsors and the PBA
moved away from the alcohol
industry to have a clean, family
friendly image. Coors pumps
millions into NASCAR every
year, as does Anheuser-Busch
with the NFL. Those sports are
family oriented, so why can’t
the PBA change their policy
and get a piece of the advertising pie?
Favorite hobby besides bowling? I like to go fishing. When
I have time, I like to go to the
catch and release pond with
Ted and Christi Pritts.

Kulick, who won the silver

Bowling industry showcases Gen Y talent
during National Learn To Bowl Month
ARLINGTON — September
22, 2014 - Just in time for
National Learn to Bowl Month,
GoBowling.com is introducing
America to the fresh new faces
of bowling. This October, the
bowling industry will lead a
national PR effort to highlight
Gen Y bowling stars who are
infusing youthful energy into
professional bowling, America's
#1 participatory sport. The
campaign coincides with National Learn to Bowl Month, an
industry-wide effort launched
by GoBowling.com and the
Bowling Proprietors' Association of America (BPAA) to
introduce youth and people of
all ages to the sport of bowling.
Throughout October, centers
across the nation will offer
four-week bowling instructional programs to anyone who
wants to learn how to bowl.
"In recent years bowling
has seen a massive resurgence
in popularity and cultural
relevance, particularly among
Gen Y audiences," said Tom
Martino, president of BPAA.
"This is even more apparent
when you look at the stars
that are making up the next
generation of pro bowlers, players who are young, athletic and
redefining perceptions of what
a pro bowler looks like."
Added Martino, "This national PR campaign will helps
us create attention for National
Learn to Bowl Month, a time
when our industry comes
together to invite both youth
and people of all ages into our
centers to enjoy a full month of
lessons."
Throughout National Learn
to Bowl Month, consumers
can sign up at bowling centers
nationwide for Bowling 2.0,
a comprehensive course that
teaches consumers of all ages
and levels how to improve
their bowling score in just four
weeks. The program is com-

McGregor and Thomas take
SASBA Two in One Singles
From left, Bob McGregor, Doug Barron and Mark Estes finishing 1st,
2nd, 3rd in the 60 & over Divison.
From left, Pete Thomas, Bill Fong and Joe Lecroy finishing 1st, 2nd,
3rd in the 50-59 Divison.
In the 60 & over division of
the SASBA Two in One Singles
at Plano Super Bowl, Bob
McGregor ran down qualifying
leader Mark Estes in the finals
and led by 100 entering the
title match. A hard charging
Doug Barron was close behind
Mark in 3rd. Mark and Bob
both struggled with carry
and Bob eked out a 208-204
victory, enabling Doug to pass
Mark for 2nd. Charlie Hufford
bowled great all weekend to get
4th and Doug Hayes and Rick
Minier tied for 5th place. It was
the ageless McGregor’s 40th
SASBA Title!
In the 50-59 Division, Pete
Thomas grabbed the lead
early in the finals, then pulled
away…averaging 259 and
romped to his 10th SASBA
Title. Bill Fong bowled great
to nab 2nd. Joe Lecroy got 3rd
place. Tim Caldwell made his
first finals and finished 4th and
Mark Williams rounded out the
top five.
Thanks to Jamie Brooks,
Scott Craddock, Chris Johnson
and crew for hosting! It’s always fun to go to PSB. To me,
this is one of the showplace
centers in the country. The
pattern was fair left and right
and held up pretty well.
Our next tournament is at
Cowtown Bowling Palace for
the Annual 70/60 Doubles.

All I can say is WOW! I enjoyed
myself so much when we went to
Red Bird & to Ennis the other day
that I took my husband and kids
again yesterday!
Oh yeah, & what did they think
about it?
They thought is was a lot
smaller. But when we were there
I think the whole Cathey family
must have been there working!
I met Lois, Jeff, Billy & Lauren,
Jennifer and TJ. Plus when we
started to leave, they all called
me by name and said they looked
forward to seeing us again! Then
by the time we got to Ennis, Billy
& Lauren were there too! It was
homey...
Really? Thats impressive! We
have been bowling over here for
5 years and the bartender is the
only one that halfway remembers
my name…The counter guy looks
at me clueless every time I walk
in!
My kids really liked the Ennis
Alley! They stayed in the
gameroom the whole time we
were there. We practically had to
drag them out when we started to
leave!
I though that the pinsetters
were way cool! Being able to
shoot only at the pins that I have
trouble with was really helpful!
Billy Cathey and Larry Martin
headed the leader boards last
week at Red Bird Lanes by logging
a sturdy 686 series. Cathey fired
games of 212-247-227 in Tuesday

Martin downed 225-268-193 lines
in Red Bird Mixed league play.

prised of four one-week lessons
and teaches novice to amateur
bowlers the fundamentals of
bowling, including how to
pick out the perfect bowling
ball and how to maintain
the proper posture and foot
alignment. For those new to
the sport, the guide will teach
them how to bowl by working
just one or two techniques at a
time.
Many Mini Tips
Nuggets you don’t have to dig
for
 Put your thumb all the
way in the hole. Please. Put
your thumb all the way in the
hole. I just can’t emphasize
that enough. I see folks constantly with their thumb only
partially in the hole. It causes
so many problems – poor roll,
squeezing the ball, killing the
shot, dropping the ball, no
backswing, grunting at the
foul line, etc. Unless you are
making a rather sophisticated
adjustment, you should always
put your thumb completely in
the ball. Your hand was measured and your span gauged by
your pro shop professional with
your thumb all the way in the
hole. If you don’t put it all the
way in, you won’t be able to
free swing the ball, will have
to control it, and for sure, the
pins always know when your
swing is tight. I understand
that a very common reason for
you not putting your thumb all
the way in is because you feel
you can’t get out of the ball if
you do that. If that’s so, your fit
is stretched. Get it fixed!
 Most people put their

fingers into the ball first and
then the thumb. Putting your
thumb in first will usually
have you feeling like the ball
was drilled for someone else!
It’s a great way to change
your release without thinking
about it. You’ll have much less
rotation and “stuff” on the ball.
Super Tip - This works well for
straightening the shot out for
your spare shots.
 The ball should contact
the lane as though it were an
airplane landing. Cramming
the ball INTO the lane instead
of laying it ONTO the lane creates a very poor and inconsistent roll. That’s why knee bend
is so important. You’ve got to
get your body into a position
to lay the ball down. The more
upright you are, the higher the
position of the ball for delivery.
Banging the ball on the lane is
loud, embarrassing, and kills
the roll. Other than that, it’s a
good idea!
 There is a big difference
between being in control
and being in charge. If you
alphabetize your canned goods,
you’re probably an overcontroller. We’ve all had bosses
who were controllers. You felt
like no matter what you did,
the scrutiny would be ominous. You tried to be perfect
in everything you did. You
checked and rechecked your
work to avoid being wrong and
you were always uptight about
your performance.
If you’ve ever had a boss
who was in charge, you know
the difference. Your creative
juices would flow, your work
output was greater, the quality
of your work superior. When
the boss reviewed it, the
suggestions for improvement,
if any, were just that - suggestions, not criticisms. In bowling, if you are controlling, you
are uptight and will cause your
efforts to fail. You try too hard
to be perfect, to look great, to
hit your target exactly. That
never works! But, if you are in
charge, your approach flows,
your swing is free and natural,
and your accuracy incredible.
Be in charge, not in control!!

PIN ACTION: in a word – Entertaining
According to the sub-title, it is about “Small-time gangsters, high-stakes gambling, and the Teenage hustler who
became a bowling champion”. Gianmarc Manzione’s new
book about Ernie Schlegel’s hustling days and pro career,
and bowling’s early darker days in the streets of New York
is fascinating and interesting . . . a delightful read
By Jim Goodwin, for the Bowling News Network
You can’t make this stuff
up.
Actually, you could make
it up, but ‘mostly’ true stories
are often better than fiction.
Readers who don’t know
anything about bowling in the
years before professional tours
dominated the sport may find
the tales in Pin Action a little
far-fetched. We would too if we
had not witnessed some of the
antics of the time and heard
some of stories and ones similar
in other parts of the country.
Manzione, the former feature
writer for the United States
Bowling Congress’ website Bowl.
com turned Central Florida College Creative Writing Professor
turned Bowlers Journal Editor
went to great lengths to find and
talk to the colorful characters he
brings to light in Pin Action, just
when they were on the fringe of
being forgotten. He didn’t just
accept tall tales at face value;
he confirmed them and added
details from many sources. A
section of “Notes” in the back of
the 225 page book describes the
process he used to procure the
nuances of the stories – refreshing that he lets the reader in
on his trials and secrets, and it
adds to his already established
credibility as a superb writer
and superior story teller.
Pin Action’s primary character is the unflappable Ernie
Schlegel. Few who know Ernie
would argue that he has been
the most colorful and sometimes
puzzling character in bowling;
perhaps in all of sports. He had
the mouth of Muhammad Ali
and the dress and daring of Evel
Knievel; not coincidental that
he admired both in his younger
years, the book tells us. Now 70,
Schlegel finally found a writer
in Manzione worthy of his
ability to make life and bowling
a true adventure story.
While reading Pin Action,
I caught myself smiling and
sometimes grinning from earto-ear at Manzione’s detailed
descriptions of characters with
names like Fish Face, Psycho
Dave, Iggy Russo, Freddy the
Ox, One Finger Benny, Bobby
Pancakes, Tony Sideweight,
Bernie Bananas, Goldfinger,
and many more. After rolling
a 300 game several years ago,
Manzione’s NY neighborhood
buddies even tagged him
with an appropriate moniker
– Shakespeare.
A police sketch artist would
love to sit down with Manzi-
one, and chances are some of
Pin Action’s more sinister gents
may have such a sketch on file
with the NYPD. Manzione’s
facial descriptions are worthy
of a Batman movie script, and
his later depictions of Schlegel’s
Bicentennial Kid costumes and
even Cathy Schelgel’s wardrobe
worn on many professional
bowling television shows might
have been written by America’s
Top Model fashion editors.
Another aspect of the book
reflects Manzione’s deep
respect for the game and for
non-bowling readers. When
describing such things as pin
carry and bowling ball surfaces
and dynamics, he takes the
time to explain the concepts to
novice bowling aficionados . . .
always with a positive spin on
the sport.
True blue bowlers will
also enjoy this book, finding
mentions of pro heroes like
Johnny Petraglia, Mark Roth,
Bo Burton, Mike McGrath,
Earl Anthony, Larry Lichstein,
Bobby Jacks, Mike Limongello,
Billy Hardwick, and many
more woven into both the up
and down career of bowling’s
most fascinating player.
New Yorkers will be pleased
to read stories about guys like
Kenny Barber, Richie Hornreich
and Steve Harris. Barber was
a key source, and provided
Manzione enough material for
to write a sequel.
Manzione’s exciting and
candid account of the 1995 PBA
Touring Players Championship,
with Schegel against Randy
Pedersen is a far better treat
than just watching the video.
He calls it “The Last Great
Action Match,” and he makes it
live up to the name.
Ernie Schlegel is one of
those bigger than life people
that we both love and hate . . .
but no one ever forgets. Manzione delves deep into Schlegel’s
well publicized life struggles,
defiant determination, devotion
to his wife in good times and
bad, and passionate way of
thinking. The result gives all
who read this incredible book a
true understanding of not just

on ESPN. If the fan outscores
the pro, the fan wins the pro’s
ball plus a custom-made High
5 jersey.
Here’s how it works:
1. Bowling fans should visit
the High 5 Gear Selfie Station
in the South Point’s Bowling
Center all week during the
WSOB Oct. 24-31. The selfies
can be taken during the preliminary rounds at the South
Point Bowling Center anytime.
2. Snap a selfie.
3. Tag it #High5GearWSOB.
4. Tweet it.
5. Tell your Twitter followers
to retweet it.
6. The person with the most
retweets from their account
will win the chance to
bowl with a pro on TV, one
shot before each show.
7. A PBA representative will
contact winners either inperson or through Twitter
and to notify them what
shows they will be bowling
on.
8. The winner should bring

In a more recent clip, a sign
occurred last week that could
do nothing but give PBA Commissioner Tom Clark a smile.
The one and only Pete Weber
was the one to break the latest

when he was in Los Angeles
to record one of the “This is

As part of that west coast

ESPN’s SportsNation in a nearly
ten-minute segment choosing

The hosts in this segment,
University of Texas at San

Just Paying
Attention
By Mark London
[email protected]
One of the bigger stories in
Texas bowling this year is the
announcement several weeks
ago the tournament most of us
call ‘The Luci,’ will be classified as a national stop on the
2015 PBA National Tour.
Tournament Director Donna
Conners was kind enough to
answer a few questions about
this truly one of a kind annual
tournament.
JPA: What procedural
details of the tournament will
change from the classification?
I’m thinking about method of
entry, who runs the tourney
that weekend?
DC: Basically, everything
remains the same. Entries have
always been open to the first
paid 84 teams starting on January 1st. We have our own staff,
our own software and (running
total score) display screens.
The only changes will be the
PBA product registration, the
PBA XtraFrame live-stream,
and a National Title for PBA
Members.
JPA: Will there be any
format changes to the
tournament?
DC: No
JPA: How much advertising
and PR support will you get
from the PBA?
DC: The PBA will market
this event just like a regular
PBA national tournament as
well I will continue my own
marketing as I always do.
JPA: Is the new tournament
name, as it is on the PBA
website, the PBA XtraFrame
Striking Against Breast Cancer
Mixed Doubles?
DC: Yes, but it is not a new
tournament name. Our Foundations name is Striking Against
Breast Cancer and will be
used in other vehicles to raise
money for the foundation.
JPA: With the classification
change, could local bowlers who have supported the
tournament over the years be
scared off?
DC: There have always been
many of the top-players of
world bowling the tournament.
My philosophy is that we are
all there for a cause to raise
money for Breast Cancer. We
have many great bowlers who
are not PBA who want to challenge themselves as some who
would be challenged fighting
Cancer. If the local bowlers as
you call them weren’t scared of
in the first 15 years, they won’t
for the next 15. Charity begins
at home and everyone WINS in
this tournament.
############
Two more rarely-seen Pro
Bowlers’ Tour videos have
found their way to YouTube
in recent weeks. The first is
Norm Duke’s first national tour
win at the 1983 PBA Cleveland
Open.
The win set the still-standing mark of being the youngest
PBA tour winner three weeks
shy of his 19th birthday. Duke
ousted Earl Anthony in the
show’s first match, followed by
Steve Cook, John Wilcox then
tournament leader Tom Milton.
An early treat in this video
was a clip of the rarely-seen
stone 9-pin Earl Anthony left
at the end of his TV 299 game.
(I’ve think I’ve watched as
much TV bowling as anybody,
and but can recall seeing the
clip only once after its original
airing.) Although he did throw
one on a Japanese show years
later, he mentioned on several
telecasts as an analyst not
bowling 300 on U. S. television
was one of the few regrets he
had in his legendary career.
Couple of things stood out
during the final game. Analyst
Bo Burton, while mentioning
one of the first times Amleto
Monacelli had made matchplay, also tried to pronounce
Amleto’s hometown of Barquisimeto, Venezuela without
much success. Meanwhile,
lead announcer Chris Schenkel
dropped this nugget of prophecy after Duke’s clinching shot
against Milton.
“This 5’ 6” 122
pounder will be a
household name.”
That show can
be found here:
https://www.youtube.com/
watch?v=fp77ebGggJA
The second is another
noteworthy show for different
reasons, the 1971 PBA San Jose
Ebonite Open. It was not only
the first all-lefty TV finals, but
the sixteen match-play finalists
battling for those five television
finals positions were also left
handed. This was the tournament which kicked off the idea
to begin the PBA Lane Maintenance program, introducing the
bowling world to a man who
would become the best known
lane man in the country, (and
eventual PBA Hall of Famer)
Len Nicholson.
After substitute lead announcer Bud Palmer welcomed
viewers to the telecast, color
analyst Billy Welu’s very first
comment was stern and almost
about what viewers were about
to see.
“In fact now not just the
top five, in fact all sixteen in
yesterday’s match game play
were left-handed. We of ABC
would like you to know that
in case for some reason you’ve
been locked in the closet and
haven’t read your papers. This
has been the greatest coverage
of any bowling tournament in
history, simply because sixteen
left-handers made the match
play finals. That’s a phenomenon, Bud,” Welu stated.
Not sure what sounded
more odd, the Welu quote, or
Palmer’s statement about Earl
Anthony having won only
one title and made only four
match play rounds the previous
season.
It might remind one of
hearing Vin Scully talk about
another legendary lefty, Sandy
Koufax, before he stopped
throwing the ball much too
hard in1960 before having the
best six-season
pitching run in the
history of Major
League Baseball.
