Dear Friends and Supporters,
Each day my journey to
work includes a short walk
from the parking lot to the
CHEO Foundation office. It
is a walk that takes me
along the East side of the
hospital where
construction has recently
begun on the Garry
Cardiff Wing that will
house an expanded
Emergency Department, a
new state of the art Critical
Care Unit, Medical Day Unit, clinic space for
neurology and more.
The other day I stopped to watch the construction
workers as they were digging the massive hole for
the foundation, and preparing the site for the
upcoming barrage of bricks, steel and mortar that
will become this incredible new addition to CHEO.
As I envisioned how the new wing will alter the
hospital landscape, my thoughts turned to how
much change I have seen since my arrival in 1995.
The CHEO Research Institute has added a second
building, the Max Keeping Wing was constructed
and Rogers House was born. Now the view from
Smyth Road will change once again with the
construction of the Garry Cardiff Wing, an amazing,
and very welcome addition.
Your children’s hospital is growing right along with
the needs of the growing family population in
eastern Ontario, western Quebec and beyond.
In our work at the Foundation we develop close
relationships with CHEO families, and the staff who
take care of them. It’s so touching to see that even
with rapid growth and frequent advances in medical
technology, one constant remains; the deep
compassion and caring warmth delivered by CHEO
staff when treating a sick child, and helping the
family members through their ordeal. It’s caring that
comes from the heart, and it truly is what CHEO is
all about.
We thank the community for the incredible support
that helps us ensure that our growing hospital has
the trained staff, and up-to-date equipment needed
to care for our children.
Sincerely,
Frederick M. Bartlett

Playin’ Ball for the Kids at CHEO
On Saturday, May 10th, 2008, TD Canada Trust will
hold its Annual Greater Ottawa Area Classic Charity
Ball Tournament. Last year, over 500 employees
from 45 TD Canada Trust branches came together to
play ball for the children and youth at CHEO,
ultimately donating most of the monies raised to
Youth Net – a bilingual, regional mental health
promotion and intervention program run by youth,
for youth. The tournament has raised over $800,000
in eight years and continues to grow. As one of
Children’s Miracle Network’s top sponsors, TD
Canada Trust’s commitment to children’s hospitals
across Canada is admirable. Their time and
dedication can be seen throughout the year as the
branches lead the way in supporting community
events at a grassroots level by having barbeques,
selling CHEO bears, collecting pledges from
customers, conducting live and silent auctions,
participating in CHEO’s two major lotteries, actively
participating at our Telethon in June, as well as
successfully growing their December monthly-giving
campaign – TD truly does make a difference!

Once again McDonald’s will be sponsoring our
Dream Team – three courageous cancer patients
who will be coming out to cheer on the thousands
of participants. This year we are proud to have
Charles Veilleux, 5, Hannayah Germain, 10, and
Kayla Whiteduck, 13, who are all very excited about
raising money for other CHEO patients fighting their
cancer battles.
Kayla
No one suspected that the pain in Kayla's knee
could be anything but an injury from one of her
many sporting events. Kayla Whiteduck, an
Algonquin from Kitigan-Zibi First Nation, who
played hockey and soccer amongst other sports,
began to complain of an intermittent low-grade pain
in her left leg.
For a great day of
family fun mark
Sunday, May 4th on
your calendars! Come
alone, bring friends and family or enter a team of
co-workers in the Tour Nortel Ottawa Citizen
Corporate Challenge and show your dedication to
our kids. There will be the Turpin Saturn Saab 2K
and GoodLife Fitness Clubs 5K walks, the Esso 12K
rollerblade and cycling tour, and the Sun
Microsystems 35K and Accenture 80K cycling tours
available (all beginning and ending at the Nortel
Campus, 3500 Carling Avenue).
After you finish your tour, there will be lots to see
and do on the scenic grounds of the Nortel Carling
Campus. Planned activities to date include:
complimentary massages, Cowguys Comedy Show,
Craz-E-Crew Extreme Sports Thrill Show, face
After Christmas of 2005, x-rays and a biopsy
confirmed the family’s worst fears. "I don't quite
remember those first few weeks, as much of it was a
blur. I recall crying a lot in private while searching
and praying for answers and hope," says Kayla’s
mom Gina.
Kayla went through 10 months of consistent and
intensive chemotherapy. She was hospitalized with a
fever and mouth sores on several occasions in
between rounds. Kayla also underwent an 11-hour
surgery to have her tumour, femur, knee and part of
her lower leg bone removed and replaced with a
prosthesis inside her leg.
Throughout this difficult period of 2006, Kayla
stayed exceptionally positive. She re-entered the
hospital on each occasion with a warrior-like
courage prepared to take on another round of
chemo. She completed her last round of chemo just
before her 12th birthday in October of 2006. Kayla

while helping CHEO, Candlelighters
and Ronald McDonald House.
Charles
Charles' parents had no idea what
was ahead of them when they
went to his yearly medical
appointment in June 2006.
Charles' paediatrician diagnosed
an abnormal physical growth and
had him sent to CHEO the
following day for more tests. A
CT scan confirmed the presence of
a cancerous brain tumour in the
pineal gland region.
From that time on, things
happened quite rapidly. Charles
underwent a total of six series of
chemotherapy treatments, three
weeks apart. Unfortunately, the
tumour didn’t shrink enough so a
13.5 hour surgery was performed
5
which was a great success. Just
nine days later he was home and
although he initially had vision
and balance problems, he was
playing at the park within a
couple weeks of his return. He is
now officially off treatment but is
still being followed in CHEO’s
outpatient clinics.
Charles is thrilled to have been
selected to represent Tour Nortel
this year and looks forward to
helping raise more funds for his
friends as well as to honour the
people who made his journey so
successful.
Hannayah
What appeared to be a nasty flu
became a diagnosis no parent is
ever ready to hear. At the
beginning of the school year in
September 2005 Hannayah was
presenting symptoms of a cold or
flu with vomiting and fever but
became worse with pains in her
legs and heart palpitations. A trip
to CHEO changed everything.
Blood work and a bone marrow
aspiration confirmed she had
Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia
(ALL).
Her troubles were far from over.
During her first week of treatment
Hannayah lost her speech, the
ability to walk, was vomiting and
had hallucinations, all due to a
severe allergic reaction to her
medication. With her medication
altered Hannayah was back to
being the smiling little girl her
parents know and love.
Hannayah is only 10 years old but
she has quickly learned how
important CHEO is which is why
she’s delighted to be a part of the
Dream Team this year.
Cancer Research
Money raised from Tour Nortel will make a
difference for years to come. Research is a vital
component in the battle against cancer. Just
50 years ago leukemia had a shockingly low
survival rate—just 10 per cent. Today, thanks to
research, that survival rate is 80 per cent. Without
the funds generated from events such as Tour
Nortel to support the critical research, many cancer
survivors would not be celebrating that victory.
While the advances in ALL (acute lymphoblastic
leukemia) have been impressive, the reality remains
that the survival rate for other types of cancer are
still far too low. As well, although more cancer
patients are winning their battles, there exist long
term effects of chemotherapy including, ironically,
an increase in adult cancer rates. Scientists are now
looking for ways to combat these long term
toxicities.
CHEO’s Research Institute is leading the globe in
investigating two of the newest and most promising
cancer therapies – treatments that utilize molecular
genetics to develop more effective and less toxic
cancer treatment including a virus therapy that kills
cancer cells while leaving healthy cells untouched.
The CHEO Research Institute workers have also
formulated a “cell suicide” treatment that is far less
toxic than chemotherapy and is now being clinically
tested in Canada, the US and the UK. These are just
two examples of the types of discoveries and
solutions that can be tested with a focused team of
talented individuals. This team is now turning its
attention to one of the most difficult cancers to
treat – brain tumours – with the hope of finding an
effective therapy to battle this too frequently fatal
cancer.
With help from events such as Tour Nortel and
other generous donations throughout the year,
CHEO and its researchers are making headway,
proving to our children and youth that beating
paediatric cancer is a priority. By investing in
research we let our children know we are making a
difference, today, tomorrow and for years to come.

CHEO Partners With Community Hospitals
to Provide Emergency Care to Children Closer
to Home
A special project funded by
Ontario’s Ministry of Health has
made it possible for CHEO to
partner with community hospitals
in eastern Ontario to establish a
standard way of treating children
in Emergency Departments.
Cornwall, Winchester, Pembroke,
Arnprior, Carleton Place, Renfrew
and St. Francis hospitals are
participating in the initiative.
Vomiting, diarrhea, croup and
bronchiolitis were selected as
starting points, largely because
they are so common in children
and youth seeking emergency
treatment. “These illnesses are
common to all children, regardless
of where they live. By sharing the
way in which we treat such
illnesses with our partner hospitals,
parents can rest assured that their
local hospitals have all the
knowledge and necessary tools to
provide quality paediatric care,”
says Stephanie Poirier, nursing lead
educator for CHEO’s Emergency
Outreach Project.
For parents of children who suffer
from any one of these common
illnesses, this partnership will go a
long way in providing paediatric
standards of care as close to home
as possible. While in the past many
families may have chosen to drive
to CHEO in Ottawa, they now have
the assurance that their community
hospital is the right place for their
child given that their hospital has
the same treatment and guidelines
for these illnesses as CHEO.
“With this exceptional partnership
between CHEO and these
community hospitals in eastern
Ontario, CHEO’s standard of care is
available to all children and their
families. This development of this
collaborative relationship is
wonderful,” says Michel Bilodeau,
President of CHEO.
CHEO is a strong proponent of
delivering care as close to home as
possible. This initiative is in
keeping with the hospital’s
mandate to provide leadership and
to share paediatric excellence with
its community partners.
Young Fundraisers
A special teacher can have a magical affect
on students of any age. This is especially true
for grade 5 student Jenna May and her
Kindergarten teacher Ms. Kennedy who had
lost her son Mitchell to cancer. Jenna May
wanted to do something to remember
Mitchell and asked her friends to bring
donations to her birthday party instead of
gifts. She generously donated these funds
in Mitchell’s honour to CHEO because she
“wanted to help families with sick kids.”
Ms. Kennedy was so touched by this warm
and generous act, she gave Jenna May one
of Mitchell’s teddy bears. One tiny act of
kindness made a huge difference in the lives
of many. We thank Jenna May and all her
friends for thinking of the kids at CHEO!
