11th Annual ‘Race For Our Kids’
Raises Record Funds
EARLY MORNING on Sunday,
S eptember 20th, almost 1,000
amateur runners, walkers,
children and their families, and
‘seasoned athletes’ recognized
by the Maryland Senior
Olympics gathered at Preakness
Way next to Pimlico Race Track for the
start of the 11th annual ‘Race for Our
Kids.’ This annual event raises valuable
funds in support of the Herman &
 alter Samuelson Children’s
W
Hospital at Sinai.
Thanks to the amazing
generosity of racers, teams, and
their sponsors, the Presenting
Sponsor Sinai Hospital
Auxiliary, event chair Julie
Levine, the Classic Catering People, and
countless volunteers and organizers,
this year’s Race for Our Kids raised a

Race For Our Kids—Andrew Oberle’s Story
F
o bserved his mommy, Caroline, having one
of those days when everything seemed to
go wrong. It was July 16, 2014 and as she
came down the stairs in the morning to
make breakfast, she broke her little toe.
Later on, the car wouldn’t start. And then
there was the message late that morning
from Andrew’s pediatrician. He wanted to
see Andrew back in the office before the day
was over….
You see, up until that day, Andrew was
a normal four year old in every sense of the
word. His world revolved around Thomas
the Tank Engine, Transformers and the
Baltimore Orioles. But Andrew’s parents had
noticed a few slight changes that didn’t
quite make sense. On a trip to the beach
two weeks earlier he had some difficulty
when walking across the sand to the
shoreline. The first night they got home he
woke up itching with no apparent rash. But
it was the s wollen glands on his neck—with
no a ssociated pain—that prompted the
initial call to their trusted pediatrician.
This visit to the pediatrician on July
16th was a follow-up. The bloodwork was
inconclusive and the antibiotics that he
had been on for five days hadn’t reduced
the swollen glands. Caroline was a bit
surprised when the pediatrician said to
her at 4:30 pm that July afternoon, “You
know, I want to rule some things out and
to do that I am going to send you to the
best place in B altimore for what I want to
rule out. I don’t want to alarm you but I am
going to call the Sinai Hospital Emergency
Department and tell them to expect you.”
By 6:30 pm, Andrew was admitted
to the Herman and Walter Samuelson
Children’s Hospital at Sinai. For the first
time, the wave of unimaginable emotions
hit Caroline as she walked past a sign
which read “Pediatric Oncology.” She
quickly s ettled into the room and called her
husband, Brian, who had been traveling out
of town on business. Through the tears she
was able to tell him, “I need you to come
home tonight.”
Dr. Joseph Wiley, who was then
the Chief of Pediatrics and of Pediatric
Hematology & Oncology, was on call
that evening and quickly left a dinner
engagement to examine Andrew and meet
with Caroline. Soon they found that it
wouldn’t only be Dr. Wiley, as they were
introduced to the rest of their dream
team—Drs. Yoram Unguru and Jason Fixler.
The next day, Dr. Wiley met with Brian
and Caroline as Andrew underwent his first
of many surgical procedures, a bone marrow
aspiration that would deliver the news that
Andrew indeed had the most common form
of pediatric cancer—Acute Lymphoblastic

FOUR YEAR OLD ANDREW OBERLE
Andrew Oberle and his father, Brian, at the 2015 Race for Our Kids
Leukemia, commonly referred to as “ALL.”
Life, as the Oberle Family knew it, would
never be the same, as Andrew had officially
joined the club that no one ever asks to be
a part of.
The treatments began the following
day, with Andrew undergoing his second
surgical procedure to insert a portocath
(port for short) beneath the skin in his
chest. For the next three years, this port
serves as a primary mechanism to deliver
the medications and fluids that are needed
to help Andrew overcome this challenging
chapter of his life.
Andrew spent 15 of the first 30 days
on the new “third floor” of the Samuelson
Children’s Hospital, most times writhing
in pain due to the medicine’s debilitating
effects on his young body. The staff of
nurses tended to him as if he were their
own, gently massaging his lower back and
stomach, many nights well past midnight.
The first glimmer of good news was received
on Day 29, a milestone day in the overall
treatment of pediatric leukemia. The results
of the second bone marrow aspiration came
back identifying Andrew as an “early rapid
responder.” The medicines that were being
delivered in that first month were doing the
job and destroying the cancer cells. Now it
was a matter of keeping the cancer away
and retraining the body.
The side effects of the medications
left Andrew unable to stand on his own
weight for the first 45 days. He endured
nearly 50 ‘port’ chemo treatments, 15 spinal
taps, three bouts of chronic pancreatitis,
four rounds of potentially lethal dosages of
methotrexate and nearly 60 nights on the
third floor—all within the first nine months
of treatment. Thankfully, that third floor
had become a home away from home for the
entire family.
“Now I understand the notion of a
community based hospital, with world class
expertise,” says Caroline Oberle. “From the
Family Life staff manning the emotional
wellness side, to the custodial staff that has
taken us in like family members, we couldn’t
have walked this path without the people we
have met. I’ve talked to other parents who
are in treatments at other hospitals. To us,
there IS no other place like Sinai.”
Andrew moved into the third and longest
phase of his treatments, the M
 aintenance
Phase, in the spring of 2015. What had been
almost weekly chemo t reatments became
a monthly occurrence. Andrew is slowly
gaining the ability to walk again as special
braces guide his tiny feet. His hair is g rowing
and he even participated in a season of
T-ball.
The Oberle Family and their team,
“Andrew’s Minions,” participated in
September’s Race for Our Kids ‘Family Fun’
Walk.
There were hundreds of patients and
family members participating in the Race,
each with their own story. We thank A
 ndrew
and his family for sharing theirs. l

record $170,000 in support of much
needed programs and services for the
children of our community. Sinai Hospital
President Amy Perry was on hand to
thank everyone for their dedication to
the hospital’s youngest patients, as was
Dr. Aziza Shad, the newly appointed Ellen
W.P. Wasserman E

Samuelson Children’s Hospital.
The 10K runners departed first, over
a challenging course through the hilly
Mt. Washington neighborhood, and
were soon followed by twice as many 5K
participants. Runners crossed the finish
line on Greenspring Avenue just before
Northern Parkway to the thunderous
applause of the Dulaney High School
Cheerleaders and the Stevenson University
Women’s Ice Hockey Team, who
provided much appreciated volunteer
service during the race.
LifeBridge Health President and
CEO Neil Meltzer and his wife, Ellen,

around the Levindale Campus, past the

entrance of Sinai Hospital to the post-race

The Circle of Life Society recognizes donors who made charitable gifts totaling $250 or more during the last fiscal year in support of
Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, Northwest Hospital and Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital.
The consistent, devoted support of annual donors makes many of our accomplishments possible. The funds are used to strengthen hospital
and affiliate programs, enhance medical technologies, attract the best clinical staff and maintain a healing environment. In short, annual gifts
increase the quality of the healthcare experience we are able to offer our patients.
LifeBridge Health is pleased and honored to recognize the donors who made gifts at the Circle of Life Society—Visionary, Cornerstone,
Steward and Advocate Levels—from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015.
