Summer antics of swimming in the canal and capsizing a small boat, angering the
occupants who through hot tar on the boys.
Discussions on how lazy the students are and lots of discussion on their smoking and
drinking.
Hopes to meet again with Mr. Muhlenberg and change his opinion of him as aa
dissipated and drunken rascal
A two week suspension at the home of Dr. Scudder, put into a devilishly small room
right next to the old man’s where he could hear every word said. Did not like to hear
such talk as his two daughters had been brought up in the first Society and could play
“Ching a ring ching chew” on the piano and discuss the making of sausage, and the
stuffing of guts…. This is followed by an unflattering description of the household staff.
Describes a “canonizing expedition” a group approx. 20 students relocated an old
revolutionary cannon about 14 ft. long found about a mile from the college and planted it
in front of the campus. Transported by a sturdy wagon and four (4) hours. Johnny
McLean, vice president arrived as they were half way through they unload and tried
ordering them to their rooms to no avail.
Much discussions of sexual exploits and friends they have in common including their
whereabouts. Also discussions on sports.
Proclaims nothing of interest and that he is bored and somewhat blue going for a “hot
whiskey” in the evening that wasn’t very good. He’s exams are next week and he hasn’t
studied nor does he plan to attend any further recitations and will most likely be
dishonored when the exams begin.


Again discussion about evenings in the bar, what different people ordered and how a
stranger picked up the tab. Forty boys were seen out-side the college along the fence after
breakfast –38 were smoking.

Continues on about various acquaintances in somewhat disparaging terms. Proclaims
that more than anything he wants to take a voyage to the Mediterranean.
 The term is almost up, will be going to Barrytown (Dutchess Co.) after the term and will
stop and see him on his way up the river. Concludes with a geometry equation and a p.s.
“The Siamese twins are here I shall go and take a look at the animals tomorrow.
 Along and bored in Dutchess county relaying talks of gossip and rumor. Discusses how
Jim Wall was sent by the Cliosophic Society to give a speech to a new church; the society
president severely edited the speech, leaving him looking the fool.
 News on school placements of various friends. Gossip re a fellow who acquired “the
clap” from Philadelphia beauty while “indulging in mutual outpouring of the spirit”. An
additional account of another who kept a women in Philadelphia and also acquired a
disease. Concludes with how lonely he is in Dutchess County.
 Back in class. New session has about 80 new green students. He was jokingly introduced
as Prince Tillosson of Bavaria. A new student was impressed at attending a college
patronized by a Prince, Indians and Greeks. (one student from Greece and to Indians or
rather “half -bloods”, the nephew of John Ross the Cherokee chief, “doesn’t look any
more like an Indian than I do”
 He relays a sort of tongue in cheek tale of a tutor who resigned “During the late
examination a Greek verb in order to avenge probably some mistake made in conjugating
it, by some means or other, got into his stomach, and these with mulish obstinacy it
stuck, in spite of all his endeavors to throw it up or digest it; the poor fellow is now
suffering dreadfully and the physicians have little hope, the best is every day increasing
in size….and have an increasing thirst for knowledge…”
 Trying to get an India rubber ball from Philadelphia for football vs using a bladder that
would need to be soaked daily.
 Arrival of Craig Biddle who receives special attention as his father is a great man,
allowing him special favor.
 Requesting the laws of West Point from his friend for another.
One of the letters is completely transcribed. Some are in pieces but complete. (#25019-336) $525.00

23. [Child development] [Camp Fire Girls] 1847-48 Camp Fire Girls Leader Archive -Arlington MA.
[Excerpt from Wo-He-Lo: The Camp Fire History,
copyright 1980 by Camp Fire, Inc.] The aim of the
organization is to provide for girls outdoor activities
corresponding to those furnished boys by the Boy Scout
movement. It seeks to encourage a greater interest among
girls in exercises in the open with the threefold aim of
developing their bodies, mind and characters. It is
recognized, however, that the activities provided for the
girls must be fundamentally different from those of boys
and that special attention must be paid to the home. . .
This Campfire Leader’s archive demonstrates
how the organization’s mission was
operationalized and the comprehensive
approach to childhood development. It
includes folders that include:

Camp Fire was founded in 1910 by Luther Gulick, M.D., and his wife, Charlotte Gulick. They created Camp Fire “to
guide young people on their journey to self-discovery.” The Gulicks felt strongly that the experiences young people
have early in life teach them to care for themselves, their environment, and the people around them for a lifetime.
