Wheat Bowl History
Northwestern is no stranger to the Wheat
Bowl, as tonight’s game will be the third trip
the Rangers have made to the annual classic.
With a 40-7 win against MidAmerica Nazarene
in 1998 and a 49-14 victory against Missouri
Valley just a year later, Northwestern holds a
2-0 record at the Wheat Bowl.
No. 15 Lindenwood will be the Rangers
third opponent from the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
Lindenwood is making its second appearance at the Wheat Bowl, dropping the 2000
meeting against Concordia (Neb.) in Wheat
Bowl VI by a 31-14 margin.

Opening Day Domimation
After turning in a 4-5 record last season, the Rangers are hungry to get
the 2006 season started the right way. Over the past nine seasons, opening
day hasn’t been a problem for Northwestern, winning seven of the last eight
contests and outscoring opponents 349-89. The Rangers only loss in that
time span was last season, when Northwestern fell to a tough St. Xavier (Ill.)
squad, 21-7, on the road.
About the Lions
Lindenwood, who finished with a 7-3 record last season, was picked second in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
The Lions will be behind the direction of sophomore quarterback Ben Kisner who took over midway last season and led the Lions to five straight victories at the end of the season. He will be supported by senior wide receiver
Steven Kennedy, who hauled in 100 passes in two seasons, and by redshirt
senior Greg Morris, who will be replacing all-American tailback DeDe Dorsey.
On the defensive side, the Lions have led the HAAC in scoring defense
for the last two years. Seniors Marcus Klund and Josh Roberts return at
safety and senior David Gladney will finish his third season as the starting nose guard. Six of the front seven will need replaced, including all four
linebackers.
Scouting the Rangers
The Ranger offense will ride behind the skills of junior signal caller Bryan
Henry, who was a back up last season, throwing for 388 yards in seven games.
Senior Casey Overholt will anchor the fullback position with newcomer Thez
Robinson replacing all-American Odie Armstrong at tailback. Returning at wide
receiver will be senior Nathan Soliz and junior Sedgwyn Thigpen, who combined
for seven touchdowns and more than 700 yards.
The defensive line will consist of all new faces. Redshirt freshman Bradley
Hartfield and transfer Matt Huff along with junior B.J. Hodshire, the Rangers’
leading tackler last season, will start at linebacker. In the backfield, junior free
safety Josh Hutchison will be joined by three new bodies.
Series Record
Tonight is the first time these two teams will meet on the gridiron. Neither
team had a common opponent last season, while 10 of Lindenwood’s 11 games
were HAAC conference games.
Rankings
Northwestern received votes in the NAIA’s first poll of the season and were
nine points away from the top 25. Lindenwood jumped from being unranked to
taking a 15th ranking in the NAIA poll. The Lions are ranked 10th in the Victory
Sports Poll and 16th by Football Gazette, while the Rangers are ranked 40th by
Football Gazette.
Coaches
Fred Slaughter (Northwestern Oklahoma State, ‘96) begins his second season as the head coach of the Rangers and carries a 4-5 overall record and 4-2
CSFL conference mark from the 2005 season.
Lindenwood’s Patrick Ross (Puget Sound, ‘97) is in his third season as head
coach of the Lions with a 18-5 overall record.
