THE STORYLINE: American returns home after a short two game road trip to face the New Jersey Institute
of Technology, the first meeting between these two teams. American is coming off a win over Mount St.
Mary’s, in which the Eagles put forth their best defensive effort of the season, holding the Mountaineers to
30.4 percent shooting and just 46 points. Meanwhile, the Highlanders have endured a three-game losing
streak after starting the season with two wins. AU senior guard Andre Ingram is just 18 points from moving
into 17th place all-time in career scoring at American.
LAST TIME OUT: The American University men’s basketball team improved to 4-2 on the season with a
59-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s University Monday night at Knott Arena. Senior guard Andre Ingram led
the Eagles with 15 points. After holding a 12-point lead at halftime, American matched basket-for-basket
for the first two buckets of the half. However, the Mountaineers engineered a 9-0 run over the next four
minutes to make things tight. Still, an Ingram bucket got the Eagles back on the right track, and the lead
was never truly threatened for the rest of the game. American opened the first half with a 7-0 run, holding
the Mountaineers scoreless for the first 4:35 of the contest. However, MSM put together a comeback, whittling the Eagles’ lead down slowly, until the Mountaineers took the lead, 17-14, with 6:51 left in the stanza.
Undeterred, American ripped back the momentum through defense, not allowing the hosts another field
goal for the remainder of the half. Meanwhile, American’s offense started clicking, leading the Eagles to a
15-0 run over the last seven minutes, keyed by a four-point play by Ingram. Ingram’s eight first-half points
led the Eagles through the first 20 minutes, while Derrick Mercer and Cornelio Guibunda each chipped in
six points. Guibunda added six rebounds and a blocked shot in the first period. American improves to 4-2
on the season. Guibunda finished with eight points and eight rebounds, both career-highs. The Eagles held
MSM to just 30.4 percent shooting on the night.

2006-07 AMERICAN MEN’S BASKETBALL
QUICK HITS:
* American had its best defensive effort of the season Monday against Mount
St. Mary’s, holding MSM to just 30.4 percent shooting.
* Sophomore guard Derrick Mercer has set career-highs in free throws in two
of his last three games (7-of-10 vs. Loyola; 9-of-13 at Mount St. Mary’s). He
is shooting .762 for the season from the free throw line and leads the Eagles
with 42 trips to the line.
* Senior forward Brayden Billbe has hit just one of his last six shots after
dropping a season-high 17 points and five rebounds against Loyola (Md.)
* Senior guard Linas Lekavicius and sophomore forward Brian Gilmore both
hit their first three-pointers of the season at Mount St. Mary’s. Senior center
Paulius Joneliunas hit his first career three-pointer at Xavier.
* Senior guard Andre Ingram has hit 14 consecutive free throws. He is 25-of28 (.893) from the line this season.
* Andre Ingram needs just 18 points to move into 17th place all-time at AU in
career scoring (see chart on pg. 3).
* A win tonight would match the 2004-05 season for the best start by an AU
team since the 1989-90 season. That team finished 20-9. That was American’s
last 20-win season, under head coach Ed Tapscott, an AU Hall-of-Famer.
* American is 2-0 at home this season, with wins over Morgan State and
Loyola (Md.).
* American has had seven players hit three-pointers this season. The Eagles
had nine different players hit a three-pointer last season.

American 97, Morgan State 84
American got clutch performances at the end of regulation
from Derrick Mercer and in the first overtime from senior
guard Andre Ingram, then raced out with a 6-0 run to begin
the second overtime in an epic, season-opening 59-54 win
at Fairfield University Friday in Alumni Hall. With seconds
left in regulation and American trailing 44-42, Mercer drove
to the hoop and drew a shooting foul. He calmly sank two
free throws to send it to overtime. Then, in the first overtime,
Fairfield raced out to a five-point lead and held it for much
of the five-minute overtime period. However, with 1:26 left
in the period, Ingram hit a fall-away three-pointer from the
left corner while being fouled, then hit the free throw, to pull
American back within one, 50-49. The Eagles then carried
that momentum, and with a bucket from Linas Lekavicius
and two free throws from Ingram looked as if they would ice
away the victory. But Fairfield’s Jonathan Han hit a miraculous three-pointer from 25 feet as the buzzer sounded to
send it to the second extra period. AU scored the first three
baskets of the second overtime and held the host Stags to
just one point to come away with the final margin. Ingram
led all scorers with 19 points, hitting four-of-nine three pointers and adding nine rebounds. Mercer had 14 points, while
Lekavicius added 10. American held Fairfield to just 32.8
percent shooting on the game and just 21.4 percent from
behind the arc. With the win, the Eagles snap a five-season
skid in season openers.

Andre Ingram scored 24 points, tallied six assists and
grabbed six rebounds, while Derrick Mercer registered a
double-double with 13 points and 11 assists in the Eagles’
97-84 victory over Morgan State Tuesday in Bender Arena.
American had a 50-40 lead at halftime and came out with
the momentum scoring 15 points just over five minutes into
the second half. With Ingram sinking three from downtown
in the second and going 5-7 in the night, the Bears had no
chance to recover from the Eagles’ 19 point lead. After
gaining the lead 1:14 into the game, American University
took it from there and led the rest of the way. With Mercer’s
quick crossovers and no-look passes, Ingram’s “nothing but
net” shooting and a Brayden Billbe dunk, Eagles’ fans had
all the reason to remain on their feet throughout the game.
Along with Ingram and Mercer, two other Eagles’ players
scored in double-digits with Billbe recording 16 and Garrison Carr tallying 15 points. With his 24 points, Ingram
moved up to 19th all-time at American in career scoring.
This game also marked the first time since the 2003-04
season the Eagles reached 90 points, last doing it in their
90-82 win at Lafayette. Before tonight’s game, this same
season marked the last time AU hit 50 points in the first half
in its 83-69 victory over Radford and the last time American opened its season with two wins. The 2003-04 season
proved to be successful as the Eagles went 18-13 overall
and 10-4 in the Patriot League, eventually making to the
Patriot League Championship game. American University
shot 58.6% in field goals, 61.1% in three pointers and 75.0%
from the free-throw line, dominating over Morgan State in
each of these areas.

The American University men’s basketball team came back
from a 14-point first-half deficit and led for much of the second half, but the Richmond Spiders eventually found their
strokes to come back and defeat the Eagles, 61-50, Friday
at the Robins Center. American led by as many as seven
points in the second period, after a Garrison Carr threepointer gave the Eagles a 41-34 cushion with 10:38 left in
the game, but the Spiders stayed poised and launched a
comeback. The Spiders used two layups from Dan Geriot
- who finished with 18 points - and a layup from Peter
Thomas to pull back within and make a game of it. The dagger for the Eagles came when, after UR had a 48-45 lead,
Richmond’s Brian Morris nailed a three to give the hosts a
six-point lead. American got back to within three points on
a three by Arvydas Eitutavicius with 3:20 left, but AU got
no closer than that the rest of the way. Richmond seemed
to take control of the first half, and seemingly the game,
when it rushed out to a 23-9 lead on a layup by Dan Geriot,
which gave him nine points in the opening stanza, at the
6:24 mark. However, American regrouped, starting with a
basket from the low block by Brayden Billbe that launched
an 11-0 run over the game’s next four minutes and put the
score at 23-20 in favor of Richmond. Only a three-pointer
by Richmond with 46 ticks left in the half could halt the run,
and American entered the locker room trailing 26-20. The
Eagles then opened the second half by extending the run to
20-3 when they opened the second half with a 9-0 spurt. AU
held the Spiders scoreless for the first five minutes of the
second period to pull ahead, 29-26.

Led by Andre Ingram’s 22 points and Brayden Billbe’s
season-high of 17, American University men’s basketball
went on to down Loyola 81-74 at Bender Arena on Monday
night. The Eagles went into the second half with a 15 point
lead and with the Greyhounds closing it to as close as six
with 1:38 remaining, AU held on to the advantage to win by
seven. Shooting 46.3% from the floor and 79.2% from the
charity stripe, AU had the edge over Loyola, who went 46.6%
in field goals and 66.7% from the free-throw line. With the
clock winding down in the second, Loyola went on a 6-0 run
on a three-point play by Loyola sophomore Jawaan Wright,
bringing the Greyhounds to within seven. Loyola would get
just one point closer as Jeff Jones’ squad went 38-48 from
the free-throw line, hitting clutch free-throws in the remaining minutes. Ingram’s 16 points in the first half and Billbe’s
season-high of 17, led two other Eagles into double figures.
Senior guard Arvydas Eitutavicius provided AU with valuable minutes off the bench, netting 13 points and tallying
three assists for American University. Derrick Mercer shot
7-10 from the free-throw line en route to his 11 points in
the game. American forced the Greyhounds to commit 17
turnovers, while the Eagles handed Loyola 12 of their own
mistakes. Each team grabbed 31 rebounds in the match,
with the visitors leading 12-2 in second-chance points.

American 59, Mount St. Mary’s 46
A strong first half and a solid effort by Paulius Joneliunas
weren’t enough to overcome hot outside shooting by the
host Xavier Musketeers Saturday at the Cintas Center in a
86-68 loss for the Eagles. American started strong, holding
the lead for much of the first half. Joneliunas scored seven
of the Eagles’ first eight points and AU held the lead until
Xavier’s Josh Duncan scored a bucket with 2:52 left in the
stanza to give the Musketeers a 29-28 lead. Duncan and
Adrion Graves scored XU’s last 17 points of the first half,
carrying the Musketeers to a 35-33 halftime lead. However,
six second half three-pointers by the Musketeers fueled a
surge for XU with which AU could not keep up. With just
under 18 minutes remaining in the game, Xavier held a 4137 lead, but Duncan continued his scoring outburst, hitting
consecutive three-pointers to stretch the XU lead to 47-37.
AU got no closer than eight points the rest of the way. Xavier shot 57.1 percent in the second stanza en route to 51
percent for the game. Duncan led all scorers with 23 points,
while Justin Doellman had 17 and Justin Cage 16. American
shot 39.7 percent as a team. Arvydas Eitutavicius had 11
points.

The American University men’s basketball team improved to
4-2 on the season with a 59-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s
University Monday night at Knott Arena. Senior guard Andre Ingram led the Eagles with 15 points. After holding a
12-point lead at halftime, American matched basket-forbasket for the first two buckets of the half. However, the
Mountaineers engineered a 9-0 run over the next four minutes to make things tight. Still, an Ingram bucket got the
Eagles back on the right track, and the lead was never truly
threatened for the rest of the game. American opened the
first half with a 7-0 run, holding the Mountaineers scoreless
for the first 4:35 of the contest. However, MSM put together
a comeback, whittling the Eagles’ lead down slowly, until
the Mountaineers took the lead, 17-14, with 6:51 left in the
stanza. Undeterred, American ripped back the momentum
through defense, not allowing the hosts another field goal
for the remainder of the half. Meanwhile, American’s offense
started clicking, leading the Eagles to a 15-0 run over the
last seven minutes, keyed by a four-point play by Ingram.
Ingram’s eight first-half points led the Eagles through the
first 20 minutes, while Derrick Mercer and Cornelio Guibunda each chipped in six points. Guibunda added six
rebounds and a blocked shot in the first period. American
improves to 4-2 on the season. Guibunda finished with eight
points and eight rebounds, both career-highs. The Eagles
held MSM to just 30.4 percent shooting on the night.
