When our equipment is in your care,you are resposible for ensuring
it comes to no harm. To reduce your liability for any damage or loss,
Northern Light supply insurance at a premium of 10% of your total
hire or charge.

1.
CONTRACTS
(a) Contracts are made and orders are accepted only upon and subject to these Standard Terms and Conditions of Sale and
Hire. All other conditions are hereby excluded unless expressly accepted in writing by Northern Light.
(b) This contract contains the entire agreement between Northern Light and the Customer and in the case of any inconsistency between these terms and conditions and the terms and conditions of any other contract documents sent by the Customer to Northern Light (whatever their respective dates) in respect of the goods, these terms and conditions shall prevail.
(c) All orders and contracts made with Northern Light shall be in writing. Any person entering into a contract with Northern
Light for the transfer of goods (hereinafter called ―the Customer‖), acknowledges that the contract has not been induced by
any representations orally or in writing made by Northern Light, their servants or agents.
(d) No quotation, estimate or tender given or made by Northern Light shall form an offer capable of acceptance by the Customer. A binding contract for sale shall only be created upon the acceptance in writing by Northern Light of the Customer‘s
order or other offer to purchase.
(e) Any typographical, clerical or other error or omission in any sales literature, quotation, price list, acceptance of offer, invoice
or other document or information issued by Northern Light shall be subject to correction without any liability on the part of
Northern Light.
(f) Any concession or waiver made by Northern Light at any time shall not prejudice the exercise of its rights hereunder.
(g) The Customer is deemed to have satisfied himself that the goods are suitable for the purpose and capable of performing
the function and use to which it is intended to put them.
(h) Northern Light reserves the right to correct any clerical errors made by its employees at any time.
(i) Each of the clauses of these terms and conditions and every part hereof shall be separate and severable to the extent that
if one clause or one part thereof shall be unenforceable the other clauses and other parts of the clause respectively shall be
effective.
2. PRICES
(a) Unless expressly stated otherwise in any quotation issued by Northern Light to the Customer, all prices quoted are ex
works and exclude the cost of special packing. Any applicable value added tax or any other sales tax or excise duties paid or
payable by Northern Light shall be added to the price and shall be payable by the Customer.
(b) Firm price quotations are valid for a maximum period of 28 days from the date of quotation unless otherwise agreed. Northern Light may, at their absolute discretion, accept or reject any order placed by the Customer without assigning any reason for
such refusal.
(c) In the event of the Customer cancelling a part of the order in accordance with the provisions of Clause 14, Northern Light
reserves the right to revise the price or prices quoted for goods already delivered.
(d) No deduction shall be made by the Customer from the payment due under this contract unless otherwise agreed in writing
between the parties.
(e) The Customer shall not be entitled to withhold or set off payments for any reason whatsoever.
(f) The price of the goods is based on the current price of materials, labour, transport and other prime costs of Northern Light
and if the same shall increase up to the date of the order Northern Light reserves the right to increase the price to reflect any
increases in such costs.
(g) Unless payment is made on collection we operate a minimum charge of £10.00 plus VAT.
(h) Seven days minimum are required from the date that details of the three referees (Bank and two trade) are provided and
satisfactory references obtained from the referees, before goods may be made available on Credit Terms.
(i) There is no obligation on Northern Light to offer credit terms.
( j) Northern Light will be the sole judge as to whether any references supplied are satisfactory.
(k) Northern Light's decision on such matters shall be final and no explanation of their decision shall be given.
(l) Immediate payment by cheque by individuals must be supported by a valid Banker‘s Guarantee Card.
(m) Where no credit account has been established a minimum deposit of 50% of equipment replacement cost may be required
payable upon receipt of equipment with the appropriate hire charge.
(n) Charges run from the day of dispatch until the day of return.
(o) Unless a daily rate has been quoted hires covering part of a week will be charged for as the next complete number of
weeks.
(p) The minimum charge period is one week, unless agreed otherwise.
(q) The customer shall be responsible for replacing all lamps in hired equipment except those whose electrical failure occurred
under normal working conditions and Northern Light will only accept responsibility for replacements when such failed lamps
are returned for inspection.
(r) Charges for delivery and collection will be made based upon the method of transport used.
3. DELIVERY BY NORTHERN LIGHT
(a) Any dates quoted for delivery of the goods are approximate only and Northern Light shall not be liable for any delay in
delivery of the goods however caused. Any specific time or date for delivery will not be binding unless previously, expressly
agreed by Northern Light, in writing.
(b) Where goods are offered for delivery to a site, Northern Light‘s obligation is to deliver as near to the site as safe,hard roads
permit. The Customer is to provide at its own expense the plant and labour required for unloading and stacking.
(c) The Customer is responsible for arranging prompt unloading of the transport at the final destination. Any additional costs
incurred due to delays in discharging transport are for the Customer‘s account, except insofar as they are caused by transport
arriving at times notified to Northern Light prior to dispatch as unsuitable for unloading.
4. COLLECTION BY CUSTOMER
(a)
Where the goods are being collected by the Customer from Northern Light‘s premises, this may be done during normal
working hours after Northern Light have notified the Customer that the goods are ready for collection or,if some other
place for collection is nominated by Northern Light, by Northern Light delivering the goods to that place.
5. DAMAGE, LOSS, SHORT DELIVERY
(a) On delivery, the Customer shall examine the goods for defects and completeness. Thereafter no claim for defects, damage
in transit, for shortage in delivery or for loss of goods will be entertained unless, in the case of damage, a separate notice in
writing is given to the carriers or to Northern Light within three days of the receipt of the goods,

separate notice in writing is given to the carriers or to Northern Light within three days of the receipt of the goods, followed
within fourteen days of the date of dispatch by a complete claim in writing; or, in the case of loss of goods, a separate notice in
writing and a claim is given to Northern Light and carriers within fourteen days of the date of Northern Light‘s dispatch to the
Customer.
(b) Northern Light‘s liability for damage or non-delivery of goods duly notified in accordance with the above shall in any event
be limited to the replacement of the goods within a reasonable time (or, at Northern Light‘s option, refunding the price thereof)
whether the damage or non-delivery is due to Northern Light‘s negligence or otherwise.
6. MATERIALS
(a)
Whilst every endeavour will be made to supply goods for Sale or hire as ordered, Northern Light reserve the right but
at no extra charge to the Customer to substitute materials and fitments or other goods of any nature of the same suitability as those contained in the contract specification if at any time in the opinion of Northern Light it is necessary to
do so.
7. TERMS OF PAYMENT
(a) Unless credit facilities have been granted to the Customer, or unless otherwise specifically provided in writing, the price for
the goods shall be paid by the Customer in cash on delivery and in default Northern Light shall be entitled to charge and recover interest from the Customer on the price of the goods calculated at the rate of two per cent per month of the value of the
invoiced goods from the due date until date of full payment.
(b) Any discounts allowable to the Customer are those shown on Northern Light‘s quotation only, and unless otherwise expressly agreed in writing, no other discounts or commissions are to become due or allowable to the Customer (any previous
course of dealing between the parties notwithstanding).
8. RISKS AND LIABILITIES
(a) Risk of damage to or loss of the goods shall pass to the Customer at the time of delivery or, if the Customer wrongfully fails
to take delivery of the goods, the time when Northern Light have tendered delivery of the goods. For the purpose of this clause
―delivery‖ shall include the arrival of the goods at the place of delivery of the Customer where delivery is by Northern Light, or
the safe loading of the goods into the Customer‘s vehicles at Northern Light‘s premises or such other place as may be nominated by Northern Light in accordance with Clause
5(a) above, where delivery is through collection by the Customer.
(b) The Customer shall be responsible for all losses, claims and proceedings arising in any manner whatsoever out of the
Customer‘s possession or use of hired equipment and shall indemnify Northern Light against all such liability.
(c) During the period of hire the Customer shall be liable for any loss or damage to the equipment and shall be responsible for
returning it to Northern Light in the same condition and state in which it was issued.
(d) Northern Light will pass to the Customer to the extent that they are able, any benefits obtainable under any warranty given
by Northern Light‘s supplier, provided that the goods have been accepted and paid for by the Customer.
(e) Northern Light accept no liability under Clause 12(d) above for:
(i) Failure by the Customer to follow the manufacturers‘ or Northern Light‘s instructions for the operation or use of the goods or
equipment;
(ii) where in the sole judgement of Northern Light, goods or equipment have been subject to mis-use, neglect, accident or
alteration (unless authorised by Northern Light); or
(iii) the goods or equipment have been installed in association with equipment that was mechanically or
electrically deficient.
9. FORCE MAJEURE
Northern Light shall not be liable to the Customer or be deemed to be in breach of the contract by reason of any delay in performing, or any failure to perform, any of Northern Light‘s obligations in relation to the goods, if the delay or failure was due to
any cause beyond Northern Light‘s reasonable control.Without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing, the following shall
be regarded as causes beyond Northern Light‘s control:
(a) act of God, explosion, flood, tempest, fire, accident, unfavourable weather conditions, flooding or other natural calamities;
(b) war or threat of war, sabotage, insurrection, civil disturbances or requisition;
(c) acts, restrictions, regulations or embargoes;
(d) strikes, lock-outs or other industrial actions or trade disputes (whether involving employees of Northern Light or of a third
party);
(i) any decision or act by any government authority or institution which prevents, impedes or delays fulfilment by a party of its
contractual obligations under the contract;
(e) difficulties in obtaining raw materials, labour, fuel, parts or machinery; and
(f) power failure or breakdown in machinery.
10. TERMINATION
(a) Northern Light shall have the right to terminate the contract forthwith where the Customer becomes insolvent or bankrupt or
makes arrangements with its creditors or suffers a receiver to be appointed or being a body corporate enters into liquidation
(other than in connection with a reconstruction or amalgamation) or commits a continuing or material breach of any of the
provisions of the contract and, in the case of such a breach which is capable of remedy, fails to remedy the same within three
days after receipt of a written notice giving full particulars of the breach and requiring it to be remedied. In any of which cases
Northern Light shall have no further obligation hereunder and the price for all goods delivered and work done shall become
immediately due and payable.
(b) A breach shall be considered capable of remedy if the party in breach can comply with the provisions in question in all
respects other than as to the time of performance (provided that performance is within a reasonable time).
11. LAW APPLICABLE
(a) These terms and conditions of business shall be governed in all respects by the laws of Scotland and the customer by
acceptance hereof waives the jurisdiction of any courts other than the courts of Scotland which shall have sole jurisdiction to
determine any matters or disputes arising out of any contracts to which these these Terms and Conditions apply.

Specialist PAT testing for sound and lighting equipment
Northern Light has been working with technology for the performance, presentation and
event industries for almost 40 years.
Many companies offering annual PAT testing are unable to service drama equipment
because it does not have a standard plug or is simply beyond their knowledge and abilities.
At Northern Light, our experienced technicians work with sound and lighting equipment day
in, day out and utilise their expert knowledge to offer a full testing, service and repair service
to a wide variety of theatres, venues and educational establishments.
All testing is carried out with the minimum amount of fuss or disruption for you, your pupils,
staff and teachers and is helpful in assisting you to meet your legal obligations in regard to
proof of safety of electrical equipment in use.
Annual PAT testing is required on all portable electrical equipment, including such items as:
Lighting consoles
Mixing desks
Lanterns
Smoke or haze machines
Portable dimmer units
If required, Northern Light technicians can also complete more regular PAT testing on items
such as IT or Kitchen equipment.
We offer annual PAT testing programmes which can be carried out at a time to suit you.
Alternatively, we can offer a bespoke service with staggered testing schedules.
We provide all paperwork – including method statements, risk assessments and asset
register – on CD, paper or email.
All Northern Light technicians have up-to-date disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau
and our PAT testing is carried out in accordance with the IEE Code of Practice.
We also offer a disposal service under the WEEE directive of broken, old or out of date
lighting and sound equipment and can offer trade in deals on some equipment.

Pyrotechnic Safety Guidelines
Pyrotechnic materials for general use are designed to be safe when handled and used correctly. They are NOT safe in
irresponsible hands. This Guide should be read by everyone who will have any involvement whatever with Pyros, from drivers
to directors
PYROTECHNICS: This guide covers electrically-fired devices, i.e.containing their own means of ignition. Use of smokepellets, powder etc. is described seperately in the product-guide/price list.
FIRING-POINT: The unit in which an effect is set, and connected electrically. May be a flash-pod, bomb-tank, confetti cannon,
etc.
TRIGGER-UNIT: Control box for selecting and firing the desired effect on cue must incorporate a key-switch which totally
disables it.
**Pyros should be treated as if very fragile and very valuable!**
USE:-Choose an operating position which has direct unobstructed view of all Firing points controlled from it. Remember to
take into account mobile obstructions such as actors!
Keep Firing-points clear of anything which might be damaged by the effect to be set off in them. The risk varies between effects, so be sure the nature and scale of each type is understood. See product guide/price list for details.
If a Firing-point is accidentally moved, or if the view of it is obstructed, or if a cast or crew member or anything else damageable strays into the risk zone,
DO NOT FIRE THE EFFECT. Disconnect that cable from the controller,and as soon as possible unload the Firing-point and
return the effect to storage.
Use only the smallest effect available which will give the desired result.Do not load Firing-points any sooner than absolutely
necessary. First disconnect the trigger unit from the supply, and take the key with you. Should an effect not fire when triggered,
unload it as soon as convenient, and test with a fresh one. If that fails too,check/swap all cabling and connectors to that point.
Re-test the first effect. Success indicates a fault found/repaired in the triggering system. Failure of the first, but re-test success
with the second indicates an effect defect. Retain the failure, seal it‘s connections with tape clearly marked ―FAILED‖ and return it to secure storage until Northern Light Sales Department can be contacted for Return or Safe Disposal instructions.
RULES ON CARE:
ALWAYS know who is responsible for them at any time.
NEVER leave them unattended and unsecured.
ALWAYS keep them in their original packaging until needed.
NEVER allow smoking or sources of ignition in the same room/hall/vehicle etc.
CARRIAGE: Strict rules apply to transporting pyros. Northern Light or their appointed specialist carrier will deliver to you, or
you may collect in person.
DO NOT ask anyone else to transport pyros unless they understand and
agree to the risk in the nature of the goods. Public transport may not be used, and Commercial vehicles must carry TREM
cards with the consignment specially packaged. Please ask us if you need particular advice or
assistance.
STORAGE: If you buy only for your own immediate needs, the guidelines following should satisfy the Police, Fire, Local Authority and Insurers‘ requirements for storage.Only they can confirm that however, so keep them informed. Northern Light will
provide appropriate product details for you on request.
N.B. Holding of pyros not for immediate use (i.e. more than 2 Kilos gross,for 2 wks or over.) or with the intent to issue to other
end-users needs regulated and registered storage. You should arrange this before purchasing stock.
IMMEDIATE USE STORAGE:- Keep pyros locked in a cool, dry room, cupboard or secure flameproof containment used solely
for that purpose. The operator should be the primary keyholder. (See ‖Responsibility‖) Keep lockfast area free of all combustible material and sources of ignition. It should have half-hour fire-resistance separation from adjoining areas, and be sited
where any fire/explosion would least affect the safety of the building‘s occupants.- Fix a NO SMOKING sign on the locked
door, and on any access doors to that room or area. Keep pyro‘s in their original packaging- including special transit cartons if
used - until required.
Take out only what is needed immediately prior to one loading of each firing-point.
DO NOT ―keep aside‖ loose items for re-loading at a later stage Ensure constant supervision of all pyro‘s while out of storage,
until fired.
Keep appropriate fire-extinguishers to hand at storage and near firing points, know how to use them, and arrange first-aid
cover and emergency procedures.

DISCOVERING UV

An Introduction to Ultra Violet Effects
Just as some sounds are beyond the range of human ears, the energy we see as light continues well beyond the rainbow of the visible spectrum. We eventually feel
it as heat in the longer waves of the Infra-Red, and as the wavelength shortens it goes out of sight again beyond Violet.
Invisible Ultra-Violet (UV) radiation still shows its presence in many ways. Its upper ranges serve in industry to harden adhesives or photo-resists, and are harmful to
skin and eyes. Daylight is naturally high in UV, which benefits plants but not sunburned humans. Many insects see in ultraviolet; the cold blue attraction of an
―Insectocutor‖ is one example of special application UV. Sun-bed tubes are another.
Such sources are no good for Effects, being either too dangerous or giving visible light as well, but by filtering out these factors we can get usable long-wave UV,
The filter is ―Wood‘s Glass‖, deep blue-black until a UV source shows through it as a dull violet glow (a purple colour-filter is not the same!) Exposure to the resulting
so-called ‖black― light is probably less risky than spending the same time in sunlight, but remember that you should no more stare at a UV lamp than you would stare
at a burning lightbulb - it‘s just as bad for your eyes!

Once, the carbon arc was the most prolific UV source, and a Wood‘s Glass filter was a common accessory for arc follow-spots. Now contained in compact quartz
tubes, arcs are still at the heart of all ultraviolet sources; that‘s why UV lamps should never be run on dimmers. Low wattage ―blacklight‖ bulbs are long established some with 3-pin BC caps for UV Floods, others for 230v. use with small filaments as ballast and ES or BC caps. The 400w. GES type, running on high-pressure
mercury lamp control gear, fits some outdoor floodlights as well as special theatrical ones. A tiny arc powers one useful unit with wide flood or tight beam models of
hand-lamp sized head and remote ballast. New powerful fittings for large Studio and Spectacular use incorporate the handling and controllability of stage lanterns,
and arc lamps as lightsources in ―intelligent‖ lighting also give UV effects capability.

Low-pressure UV sources are all around us as fluorescent tubes. The special ―black‖ type cannot produce visible light, but still works in ordinary fittings, although
diffusers or covers will filter out the effect. Sizes range from 6" to 4' (maximum!) The smallest will fit hand-lamps or 12v. caravan fittings (useful in puppet theatres, or
built into props.) but the 4' tubes are the most popular, and with the largest surface area are the most efficient.
Under UV many substances reveal a hidden talent. They shift its wavelength down to visible light. This is Fluorescence - not to be confused with the watch-dial
green of Luminous paint or the afterglow of Phosphorescence. Geology Displays often show-case minerals bathed in UV, glowing brightly in their natural form, but
the effect is more familiar in paints and inks, from vivid posters to office highlighters,
all ‗Da-Glo‘ due to the natural UV in daylight. We soon learn that white cotton reacts to disco UV‘s, as underwear shines through unresponsive nylon, and UV-active
additives in washing powders ensure our whites look even whiter!
More vivid dyes serve as ―tracers‖ in fluids, and invisible UV watermarks
aid forgery detection. Flooding a large area with UV is best from multiple sources overhead, just like an even stage ―wash‖. If this is done to a conventionally-lit
scene
that incorporates fluorescent costume fabrics and scenic paints, it will bring it to vibrant colourful life. Highlighting something fluorescent in a set with a tight-beam or
concealed UV source can also make it stand out magically from dim surroundings. For general stage cover where resources are tight, hang tubes just inside a front
border and keep the scene upstage of them or add front-of-house UV Floods to fill in (longthrow ones are useful here.) At worst, set a row of 4' fittings with safety guards along the forestage, but be aware that costumes or props near them will be very
bright, while those upstage will be obscured and dim. .
All UV lamps have a ―warm up‖ time, so they should be switched on beforehand, and the effect revealed by opening a curtain and/or taking away all normal light.
Since audiences and performers‘ eyes also need time to adjust to low light levels, avoid going from brightly-lit scenes to UV ―special‖ ones. Have them after a frontof-curtain scene or interval (turning the UVs on and working-lights off during it) and fade to complete darkness for a few moments before opening the curtain.
Fabrics, paints, dyes, makeup and all sorts of fluorescent plastics are now available to effects designers. (see our Stagestore list!) Use fillers and primers first on
difficult surfaces, before a white undercoat to give UV paints maximum effect. Flexible acrylics are best for fabric, but seal the area first with a rubber adhesive.
Although good value, these have a limited (but mixable) range, as does day-glow poster paint. Basic aerosol paints may do for props, and even highlighters are
handy! Use only
makeup directly onto skin; masks, gloves or bodystockings should carry any painted designs. (and remember, beware of cotton underwear!) The most impressive
effect is a ―transformation‖, where a scene viewed in normal light changes totally under UV. Day scenes can become night or summer turn to winter, right before
your eyes. This means subtle incorporation of UV paint into the set design, or use of types that dry as an invisible overcoating. It takes careful planning, but is worth
the effort! Even if all you want are ghosts and bats in a haunted house however, Ultraviolet light - and Northern Light, of course - can provide magical answers.
