Caring for Pets: Entry Point to the topic
A visit to your local Veterinary Clinic
If it is possible for the children to visit a local Pet Shop/Veterinary
Clinic or for a local vet to visit your classroom (perhaps bringing an
animal or two to visit as well) this is a great starting point and one
that will get the children excited about Caring for Pets.

Opportunities to write:
Writing for a purpose –Thank you letters/cards to the people at the
pet shop or the veterinary clinic)
On the writing table - provide ‘special’ writing paper (click on the above to
download these free resources)
Discuss with the children what they would need in
their Pet Shop or Veterinary Clinic, for example;
signs, posters, labels, price lists, Lost Pet notices,
etc. (Click on the Lost Pet notice to download this free
resource)
Make ‘Record Books’ for the children to write in when
role playing.
Design a record book for the Veterinary Clinic/ Pet Shop so the children can
note down for e.g. the date, the name of the animal, injury, vet’s signature, or,
the name of the animal, the name of the person who bought the animal, and
their telephone number (so the Pet Shop can call to check if the animal has
settled well into their new home!)
Hang a calendar in the role play corner

Pussycat, pussycat, where have you been?
I've been to London to visit the Queen.
Pussycat, pussycat, what did you there?
I frightened a little mouse under her chair.

Now he’s chewing on a broom,
The little doggy in my room.
