Did Cadillac’s President Hint that the Zora
ZR1 Mid-Engine Corvette is Real?
We’ve been following the rumors and innuendo surrounding a potential
mid-engine Corvette that may be under development by GM that would hit
the market around 2018.
And while we are confident that this car known as the Zora or the ZR1 is
going to happen, it’s always nice when a company insider lends credence to
those rumors, whether intentional or not.
In a recent interview with Motor Trend, Cadillac’s President Johan de
Nysschen was talking halo cars, diesel’s vs hybrids and production of cars
for global buyers. de Nysschen was specifically asked if Cadillac was
considering building a halo car based on the forthcoming mid-engine
Corvette and he answered that it has to be one of the options considered.
Here is the key passage from the Motor Trend interview:
Is a halo car based on the forthcoming mid-engine Corvette in
the cards for Cadillac?
“It has to be one of the options that we consider. In the future there are
going to be some architectures inside the corporation that will remain
purely Cadillac, but then there are others where it just isn’t economically
feasible to enter segments by trying to do a unique Cadillac. Then you look
at what’s available in terms of corporate assets. And I’m sure you’d agree
that a new, very advanced Corvette platform wouldn’t be a bad place to
start. On the other hand, if we think about what could be a true halo car for
Cadillac besides that, you could go in a completely different direction.
Considering particularly our heritage, I could also imagine a very
luxurious, very indulgent, very sophisticated four-door convertible being a
good play that draws on our heritage.”
We agree that a 2-seater coupe/convertible sports car for Cadillac makes a
lot of sense, especially when you see how the company wants to compete
with Audi. Audi’s luxurious R8/R10 sports cars could use some good
American competition in the form of a Corvette-based mid-engine Cadillac.

Did Cadillac’s President Hint that the Zora
ZR1 Mid-Engine Corvette is Real?
Chevy and Cadillac are also way beyond the badge engineering issues that dominated GM’s line-up in the
1980s/1990s and so we believe it would make good business sense for the two companies to share some
of the engineering costs and then let each brand define exactly how their mid-engine sports car would be
outfitted.
Regardless of whether or not Cadillac can make a business case to offer a mid-engine sports car, it does
appear that the Corvette team has already moved past that point and that we could indeed see Zora
Arkus-Duntov’s dream of a production mid-engine Corvette finally come to fruition.

Chevy Gives ’Vette Owners More Options for Going Faster
If for nothing else, halo cars should be appreciated for one thing:
The trickle-down effect. Now, owners of standard Corvette Stingrays can
benefit from the go-fast development that produced the wicked Chevrolet
Corvette Z06. Chevrolet Performance, GM’s in-house tuning arm,
announced a slew of new parts available for the Corvette at SEMA, and we
were invited to test them out at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch just
outside of Las Vegas.
Although one of the Z06’s biggest selling points is its supercharged, 6.2-liter
LT4 engine that’s rated at 650 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque, the supercar-killer
has many other unique features that can help improve the base Stingray.
Chevrolet Performance’s job is to test those parts and determine which ones
make sense to offer to existing owners and new customers looking to
accessorize their cars before they take delivery. Many of the parts available
for the Corvette, including the big brake kit, carbon-fiber underbody braces,
transmission cooler and associated parts, and rear spoiler, are derived from
the Z06. But other parts were developed independently for the Stingray.
The T1 suspension, for example, was developed for competition in the
SCCA Touring 1 (T1) class. It’s comprised of track-tuned dampers,
redesigned front and rear lower control arms, and stiffer front and rear
stabilizer bars. Another part designed specifically for the Stingray is the
secondary radiator kit, which lays flat underneath the primary radiator.
Chevy says this part is essential for heavy track use.
Before trying out the new parts, journalists were given a chance to sample a
stock Corvette Z51 for comparison.
We were allowed a couple of lead-follow laps around Spring Mountain’s
east track to get a feel for the standard ’Vette. Even without the Chevrolet
Performance goodies, the Stingray doesn’t disappoint. Turn-in is sharp, and
the ’Vette’s long nose just goes right where you point it. Through turns, the
Corvette corners flat with minimal body roll.
Although it doesn’t pack the same supercharged punch as the Z06, the
standard Corvette has ample power at 460 hp and 455 lb-ft. Hammer on the
throttle when you hit the straightaway, and you’ll be braking before you
know it.

2016 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Ultimate
Performance Package Quick Drive Review
After the quick lapping session in the Z51, we switched to ’Vettes modified with the Ultimate
Performance package. These cars were outfitted with virtually every go-fast part available for the
Corvette in the Chevrolet Performance catalog. The first thing you notice is that stopping power has
increased, which means you can brake much later compared to the stock Z51.
Although the stock Z51 cornered flat through turns, the east track’s series of esses upset the car a bit.
The ’Vette with the T1 suspension felt much more stable through that section, and I was able to carry
more speed as a result.
With all the parts installed, the Stingray with the Ultimate Performance package is 1 second faster than a
Z51 around Spring Mountain. Once you throw on a set of Michelin racing slicks, made possible by the T1
suspension, the Ultimate Performance package is 4 seconds faster than a stock Z51. To get an idea of
what that combination was like, I rode shotgun with three-time Le Mans winner Ron Fellows.
Even from the passenger seat, I could tell the grip from those slicks was on another level. Cornering
speeds increased greatly, and our braking zones were essentially just before the turn-in point. (It’s hard to
say how much of that extra speed was the tires and how much was the difference in driver skill level.)
Fellows liked this combination of parts so much that he helped design a spec racing series around it.
Beginning in 2016, the Michelin Corvette Challenge will pit drivers racing identical Corvettes against one
another for a 15-race season at Spring Mountain.
Page 6
2016 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Ultimate
Performance Package Quick Drive Review
The Ultimate Performance package turns a car that already handles well into
an even more potent track weapon. It does come at a cost, however. The Z06
big brake package with iron rotors costs $4,895 (combined front and rear),
and the T1 suspension runs $3,250.
Other big-ticket items include the Z06’s carbon-fiber driveshaft and support
assembly ($4,109) and exposed carbon-fiber ground effects ($4,000).
Add everything together, and you’re looking at roughly $20,000 worth of
parts.
That price might not be outrageous for Corvette Stingray owners who want
to take their cars racing, but more casual track-goers might want to pick and
choose the options that are worth it for them.
You could even mix and match with other parts from the aftermarket.
However, Chevrolet Performance parts won’t void your vehicle warranty.
The parts in Chevrolet Performance’s catalog may be pricey, but the R & D
that went into them could justify the cost especially when you consider that
many of those parts have already been proven on the mighty Corvette Z06.
After walking the majority of the SEMA show floor, I saw many worse
ways you could spend money on a Corvette.

“Color Changes are Coming Immediately to the
2016 Corvette
Any time we hear about color changes on new Corvettes, it’s pretty big
news.
This morning we received an update on Corvette production from Mike
Furman at Criswell Chevrolet.
It looks like two colors are being phased out of 2016’s production Night
Race Blue and Daytona Sunrise Orange Metallic. The good news is that an
early build-out usually signifies new color exteriors for the next model year.
What this also means is that if you wanted a Corvette with either of these
colors, the end date to build your own is rapidly approaching.
Mike also tells us that the last day to order a Night Race Blue Corvette will
be November 12th while Daytona Sunrise Orange is available to order
through December 17th.
Night Race Blue will then disappear from the Corvette color palate by the
end of December while Daytona Sunrise Orange Metallic will hang on
through January.

SEMA 2015: Corvette Performance to the Max by Lingenfelter!
Lingenfelter Performance Engineering has been a worldwide recognized brand in the performance
engineering industry for over 40 years.
Founded by the late John Lingenfelter, a racing legend, the company offers world class engine building,
engine and chassis tuning, component development and installation, and services to manufacturers,
aftermarket and OE equipment suppliers.
This year at the Sema Show, we had a great time catching up with the guys at Lingenfelter. We met with
Ken Lingenfelter and Mike Copeland, Vice-President and General Manager. Mr. Lingenfelter was the
first to introduce us to his staff and in turn, to their exciting new Corvette performance packages and
products.
Copeland gave us the tour and introduced us to Lingenfelter’s Nitrous Controller Systems with two stages
of fully independent progressive fuel and nitrous control.
“This device will trigger the programming inside the ECM and richen the fuel injectors when you’re on
the nitro, letting you run a dry nitrous system and giving you up to 500 horsepower based on the injector
size and the pump in the car. This is a new part that we are releasing here” Copeland stated.
“This system lets you run a dry nitrous and commands the injectors to add the additional fuel needed to
support the nitrous system.”
Page 10
SEMA 2015: Corvette Performance to the Max by
Lingenfelter!
To help increase horsepower and reduce pressure drops, Lingenfelter also
offers a high-flow supercharger front inlet cover that reduces restriction at
the inlet and increases boost.
Jason Haines, Lead Engineer, introduced us to their next product, the
Temperature Based PWM Output Module.
“This product is especially of interest for Corvette enthusiasts.
Newer Corvettes are equipped with variable speed fans.” These fans are
incredible in terms of their airflow capacity and they are controlled by the
vehicle’s ECM (Engine Control Module),” Haines added. “It is not easy to
install these new fans on older Corvettes because they lack the electronic
controller to manage the fans’ variable speed controls. This box will control
those fans with any GM, Bosch, or other single temperature sensor, allowing
you to add these modern fans to older vehicles, said Haines.”

Page 11
SEMA 2015: Corvette Performance to the Max by Lingenfelter!
Whether a 1950s or 1990s model and everything in between, this device allows the driver to output
the fans for a more controlled cooling effect, especially if the vehicle is equipped with a turbocharger or
supercharger. “When the old fans came on they generated a big electrical spike, and they were either on
or off.
The voltage would drop and lights would dim when the fan turned on. The other great feature of this
controller, said Haines, is that because the fans are variable speed, the electrical load is also variable, so
no more spikes.” “The variable speed fans correct this situation because the electrical load happens
gradually,” Haines added. He also stated that the system is self-protecting and does not require a fuse.
“Don’t get me wrong,” he was quick to add. “There is a fuse in the system but it is to protect it from
miss-wiring and shorts. So basically the fuse is solely for circuit protection because the fans are
self-protecting.”
Haines also introduced us to their Programmable Clutch and Throttle Position Activation Switch. This
device connects to the newer vehicles CAN data and allows the driver to install auxiliary gauges.
“This one is a simplified version,” Haines stated. “There is no way of getting a throttle position signal
with the new CAN modules.
This controller can read the signal from the CAN module and turn on a switch input to activate the nitrous
when the vehicle reaches wide-open throttle. It also provides user-adjustable switched outputs to turn
other components on and off,” Haines added.
Lingenfelter also released a new Overdrive Harmonic Balancer upgrade for the 2009-2020 ZR1
Corvette. This new kit is designed to increase the performance of the supercharged LS9 engine.
The kit can also be used in conjunction with Lingenfelter’s LS9 supercharger pulleys to achieve even
higher speeds and boost levels.
Lingenfelter also released new performance packages for the 2014 Stingray, and body styling and
performance packages for the 2015 C7 and C7 Z06.

Chevrolet Debuts Two SS Packages at SEMA
Six generations of Camaros will tell you just about all you need to know
when it comes to Chevrolet’s commitment level. From the inception of their
first generation, which sent the Bow-Tie guy into seizures of satisfaction, to
today’s latest generation that could be more rocket than car.
Through all of the years the SS package has always been a staple, and while
customers could pick certain aspects of their SS, Chevrolet is now offering
two pre-customized packages for customers to choose from.
Called “Camaro SS Red Accent Package,” and “Camaro SS Black Accent
Package,” Chevrolet has kept thing relatively simple, and we appreciate
simple.
Their Red Accent Package, as you might be able to guess from the name,
comes with Red sprinkled over the car in a tasteful, yet bold style.
From the front, the optional package differs from the regular by adding an
additional diffuser into the lower grille. A Red war stripe breaks off from
the hood, angled down toward the rear of the front tire, and does a nice job
of giving our eyes a break from the Switchblade Silver Metallic paint.
The interior has been cloaked in Adrenaline Red, there is now a red
illumination kit with red aluminum door inserts, black bow-tie emblems,
and 20-ich five-spoke gloss-black wheels with red outline stripe.
As the red trend continues throughout the car the engine cover, SS-logo
floor mats, and center console have also been turned red. Brembo brakes are
available, because this is still the SS package after all.
So after all that red, we thought Chevrolet might change things up, and they
did. With more red. In their own creative way, Chevy is seeing red, and the
“Black Accent Package” wears Red Hot paint, but has more of a race-ready
look to it.
Long Satin-black racing stripes run the length of the sixth generation
Camaro, and hint that the car is more aggressive than previously thought.
It’s been dropped from stock height using a performance lowering kit from
Chevy, and like the Red Package, also has available Brembos.
The Black Package uses the same 20-inch wheels, in low gloss, black
bow-tie emblems, and a new ground effect kit which surround the lower
portion the body.

2016 Camaro Motor Trend Car of the Year
Chevrolet pulled off a double upset, taking both car and truck-of-the-year honors from Motor Trend
magazine with its Camaro muscle car and Chevrolet Colorado pickup.
The twin endorsement by the widely quoted magazine means Chevrolet bested such serious competitors
as Honda, whose all-new Civic was seen by many as a Car-of-the-Year shoe-in, while the new Nissan
Titan and the refreshed Toyota Tacoma were strong contenders for the Truck-of-the-Year title.
“I couldn’t be more proud of this team that delivered the Camaro,” said Mark Reuss, the head of global
product development for General Motors, as he accepted one of the two awards during the first-ever
televised version of the Motor Trend awards.
“This is the A-team right here, and the A-team back home,” added Reuss, who was joined on stage by
GM’s design director Ed Welburn and Al Oppenheiser, the chief engineer on the Camaro team.
The Camaro has nabbed a string of awards in recent years, all the more significant considering the
muscle car was gone from the Chevrolet line-up for seven years due to sluggish sales. Many observers
questioned GM’s judgement in bringing the car back in 2009. But it has dominated its long-time rival
and traditional segment leader, the Ford Mustang pretty much ever since.
Chevy is hoping that a complete Camaro make-over and awards like this one will help Camaro continue
to command in 2016, even though Ford recently remade the Mustang for its 50 th anniversary.
For his part, Motor Trend Editor-in-Chief Ed Loh declared the Camaro, “one of the finest driving
vehicles in the world at any price.”
