This year, the annual conference again brings together speakers from across the globe. Be a part of
a day fi lled with great learning, insights, conversations and inspiration by speakers such as Larry
Kramer (president and publisher of USA Today), Julie Taymor (director and Tony Award-winning
creator of Broadway’s The Lion King), Jim Rogers (CEO/Chairman of Duke Energy), Daniel
Franklin (executive editor of The Economist), astronaut Catherine Coleman, and many others.
The conference includes collaborating content partners such as NOVA, National Geographic, Scientific
American, CNBC, The Economist, US News & World Report, Harvard Business Review, Woodrow Wilson
Institute and the Knight Foundation.
Each session features between three and five speakers in either panel form or presenting 17-minute
briefings on topics including healthcare, education, energy, the economy, the environment, women
in leadership and entrepreneurship. We ask each speaker to share at least one big idea that has
positive potential.
The day also features multiple networking breaks to allow attendees and speakers to connect, interact
and discuss ideas presented onstage.

Daniel Franklin
Daniel Franklin has been executive editor of The Economist since 2006 and its business affairs editor
since 2010. He joined The Economist in 1983 to write about Soviet and Eastern European affairs.
As the newspaper’s Europe editor from 1986 to 1992, he covered the Great European upheavals,
from the collapse of communism to the signing of the Maastricht treaty. He published his first book
on long-term trends, Megachange: The World in 2050, in March 2012. He has an MBA in modern
languages (French and Russian) from Oxford University and a Ph.D. from Aston University for work
on East European foreign trade.
Jamie F. Metzl
Jamie F. Metzl is executive vice president of the Asia Society, where he is responsible for overseeing
the Institution’s strategic directions and overall activities globally. An expert on Southeast Asian
history and politics, Dr. Metzl has extensive government experience, including service in the White
House, the Department of State and the U.S. Senate. He served as director for Multilateral and
Humanitarian Affairs for the National Security Council during the Clinton Administration, worked
for the Clinton Administration in the United States Department of State, and was also deputy staff
director of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He’s also written a novel, The Depths of the Sea,
and his writing has been published in various magazines.
Mickey Edwards
Former Oklahoma congressman Mickey Edwards is a lecturer at Princeton University and is also
a vice president at the Aspen Institute. Edwards served as a member of Congress for 16 years,
during which time he was a senior member of the House Republican leadership as Chairman of the
Republican Policy Committee, a member of both the House Appropriations and Budget committees,
and ranking member of the House Subcommittee on Foreign Operations. Shortly after, he taught
at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. He has been a regular columnist for a number of
newspapers and he has written two books. His latest is The Parties vs. The People: How to Turn Republicans
and Democrats into Americans.

NOVA Hosts a Panel on “How We Can Achieve an Innovation Economy”
Paula Apsell
In 1975, Apsell joined WGBH’s NOVA, a science documentary series that has set the standard for
science programming on television. She is now the Executive Producer and Director of the WGBH
Science Unit. As well as overseeing the production of NOVA documentaries and miniseries for
television, she has directed the series’ diversification into other media such as online, and it is also
now the most widely used resource amongst high school classrooms. NOVA has won every major
broadcasting award, some many times over. Apsell has been recognized with numerous awards
for her work, has served on several boards and committees, and holds honorary doctorates from
Southern Methodist University and Dickinson College.

MICKEY EDWARDS
former Republican Congressman from Oklahoma and author of the new book, The Parties Versus the People
Shirley Ann Jackson
Shirley Ann Jackson became the 18th president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on July 1, 1999.
She holds a Ph.D. in theoretical elementary particle physics from M.I.T., an S.B. in physics from
M.I.T., and is also the first African-American woman to receive a doctorate from the university.
Dr. Jackson has held senior positions in government, was appointed Chairman of the U.S. Nuclear
Regulatory Commission, was professor of physics at Rutgers University, and conducted research at
AT&T Bell Laboratories. Dr. Jackson has made many contributions to the field of science. She has
received numerous awards including being named one of the Top 50 Women in Science by Discover
Magazine and was inducted into the Women in Technology International Foundation Hall of Fame.

Norman R. Augustine
Norman R. Augustine is the retired chairman and CEO of the Lockheed Martin Corporation, the
nation’s largest contractor, a former undersecretary of the Army, and a leader in technology. He
currently serves as a member of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology and
the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Advisory Council. Among Augustine’s many honors
are the National Medal of Technology and the U.S. Department of Defense’s highest civilian award.
Augustine is the author of three books, which include Augustine’s Travels, The Defense Revolution, and
Augustine’s Laws. He is an avid outdoors enthusiast who has trekked extensively around the world; he

Susan Hockfield
The 16th president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), Hockfield led one of the
premier intuitions of science and engineering in the world. In 1985, she joined Yale University focusing
her research on the development of the brain and on glioma, a deadly form of brain cancer, and
pioneered the use of monoclonal antibody technology in brain research. She joined MIT in 2004 and
was asked by President Obama to co-chair the steering committee of the Advanced Manufacturing
Partnership. She is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and serves as
a director of the General Electric Company and the World Economic Forum Foundation.
Chuck Vest
A former president of M.I.T. (the 15th), Vest is the president of the National Academy of
Engineering. In 2004, he was appointed to the Iraq Intelligence Commission by President
George W. Bush. He was a director of DuPont for 14 years and of IBM for 13 years and was
vice chair of the U.S. Council on Competitiveness for eight years. In addition, he served on the
President’s Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology during both the Clinton and
Bush administrations, as well as the Commission on the Intelligence Capabilities of the United
States Regarding Weapons of Mass Destruction. He has also authored a book on holographic
interferometry and two books on higher education.

Eric Newton
Newton joined Knight Foundation in 2001. As a program director, vice president for journalism and
media innovation, and now as a senior advisor to the president, he has developed some $300 million
in grants. His past career contributions include editing various California newspapers, being the
founding managing editor for the Newseum, and also the managing editor for the Oakland Tribune.
Newton has written four books, which include Crusaders, Scoundrels, Journalists, and Capture the Moment.
He co-founded the First Amendment Project, shared a Peabody Award for Mosaic: World News from the
Middle East, has been a Pulitzer Prize juror and taught journalism at all levels.
Larry Kramer
Larry Kramer is currently the president and publisher of USA Today. Prior to that, he was an adjunct
professor of media management at the Newhouse School of Communications at Syracuse University,
a media consultant and author of C-Scape. Kramer served as the first President of CBS Digital
Media, was senior advisor of Polaris Venture Partners, and was chairman, CEO and founder of
MarketWatch, Inc. He was also founder, president and executive editor of DataSport Inc. for Data
Broadcasting Corp. Kramer spent more than 20 years in journalism as a reporter and editor. He has
received awards such as the National Press Club winning pieces Award, the Associated Press Award,
The Gerald Loeb Award, and led staffs to two Pulitzer Prizes.
Shelby Coffey III
Currently a senior fellow of the Freedom Forum and trustee at the Newseum, from 1989 to 1997
he was the editor and executive vice president of the Los Angeles Times. Coffey started his journalism
career at The Washington Post as a sports reporter, and held a variety of editorial positions. He then
served as editor for the U.S. News & World Report, before joining forces with the Dallas Times Herald,
where he held a position as senior vice president and editor. Mr. Coffey began working for ABC News
productions as executive vice president. After working for CNN, Coffey served as president of CNN
Business News and CNNfn.
Ellen Levy
The vice president of corporate development and strategy at LinkedIn Corp. since 2008, she has played
a critical role in overseeing business development, identifying and managing strategic partnerships,
and assessing new market opportunities. Ms. Levy is the co-founder of the Dr. Spock Company, has
served as managing director and vice president of corporate development at NeoCarta Ventures Inc.,
and also served as an advisor of New Cycle Capital, LLC. Her wide range of experience includes work
with startups, large companies, venture capital firms, research labs and universities.
Pat Mitchell
Pat Mitchell is the current president and CEO of The Paley Center for Media and the former
president and CEO of Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). Mitchell began her career working as
a former teacher and college instructor. Following teaching, she immersed herself into the media
industry where she worked for broadcast networks, several cable channels, and achieved success
as a reporter, news anchor, talk show host, White House and special correspondent, producer and
executive. Mitchell also established her own independent production company. Her documentaries
have received Emmy Awards, Peabody Awards and Academy Award nominations.

Mark Tercek is the president and CEO of the Nature Conservancy, the world’s leading conservation
organization, working around the world to save the lands and waters that sustain all life. Before
joining the conservancy, he was a managing director at Goldman Sachs, where he played a key
role in developing the firm’s environmental strategy. He also headed various business units at the
firm, including corporate finance, equity capital markets, consumer/healthcare and leadership
development. Tercek is a member of several boards and councils, including Resources for the Future,
the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions, the National Petroleum Council, the
Commission on Climate and the Council for Foreign Relations and Tropical Forests.
Jim Rogers
With more than 22 years of experience as a chief executive officer in the electric utility industry, Jim
Rogers is chairman, president and CEO for Duke Energy, the nation’s largest electric power holding
company. Prior to that, he served as chairman and CEO for Cinergy for more than 11 years. Before
that, he joined PSI Energy and became their chairman, president and CEO. Rogers has served as
deputy general counsel for litigation and enforcement for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission;
executive vice president of interstate pipelines for the Enron Gas Pipeline Group; and as partner in
the Washington, D.C. office of Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld. Rogers has served more than 60
cumulative years on the boards of Fortune 500 companies.
David Jones Jr.
Currently serving on the board of directors of Humana, Jones served as chairman of the board from
2005 to 2010. He is a well-respected voice in the healthcare business as well as in innovation. He is
the chairman and managing director of Chrysalis Ventures, a venture capital firm, which provides
equity capital for young growth companies in the Southeast and Midwest. In addition, he is the past
chairman of the Greater Louisville Health Enterprises Network, a consortium designed to promote
the growth of the healthcare economy in the Louisville area.

Craig Kielburger
Craig Kielburger is a Canadian activist for the rights of children. He is the founder of Free the
Children, an international organization that has 45 countries participating in helping the world
become a better place. Free the Children has more than 3 million members and has built more than
650 schools. Kielburger is also the co-founder of Me to We. Kielburger was also named a member of
the Order of Canada by the Governor General of Canada in 2007.
Ellen Moir
Ellen Moir is executive director of the New Teacher Center, a national resource for high-quality new
teacher and new administrator induction programs. The Center conducts research, develops and
administers induction programs, and consults with organizations, education leaders, and policymakers
nationwide on issues related to new educator support. The organization’s goal is to improve student
learning by supporting the development of an inspired, dedicated and highly qualified teaching force.
Darell Hammond
Darell Hammond is an American philanthropist, founder and CEO of the non-profit organization
KaBOOM!, which helps communities build playgrounds for children. Hammond also speaks at
conferences and universities about his work and blogs on The Huffington Post. He began building
playgrounds in college, and then founded KaBOOM! with a friend in 1996. He has received multiple
honors and awards for his work. In 2011, Hammond released his best-selling memoir, KaBOOM! How
One Man Built a Movement to Save Play.
Jim Marggraff
For more than 20 years, Jim Marggraff has dedicated his energy, vision and inventiveness to
developing standards, tools, applications and services for companies committed to creating innovative
technologies, improving communication, and advancing human thought. Prior to his current tenure
with Livescribe, he held a number of executive positions at LeapFrog Enterprises. Marggraff is the
inventor of the LeapFrog FLY Pentop computer and creator of the globally renowned LeapPad
Learning System. He co-founded Explore Technologies, StrataCom and now has founded Livescribe.

Robert S. Langer
Robert Langer is the David H. Koch Institute Professor at MIT (there are 14 institute professors at
MIT, and being an institute professor is the highest honor that can be awarded to a faculty member).
Dr. Langer has written nearly 1,120 articles, has approximately 800 issued and pending patents
worldwide, and is the most cited engineer in history. Langer served as a member of the United States

Chris Rainier
Chris Rainier is considered one of the leading documentary photographers working today. Rainier

contributing photographer for National Geographic Adventure magazine, and a correspondent on
photography for NPR’s Day to Day radio show. Rainier also heads National Geographic’s Enduring
Voices Project.
Catherine “Cady” Coleman
Catherine “Cady” Coleman is an American chemist, a former United States Air Force officer,
and a current NASA astronaut. She is a veteran of two Space Shuttle missions, and departed the
International Space Station on May 23, 2011, as a crew member of Expedition 27 after logging
159 days in space. Coleman served as a mission specialist on STS-73, trained as a backup mission
specialist for an injured crewmember on STS-83, and was the lead mission specialist on STS-93 for
the deployment of the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. Coleman has logged more than 4,330 hours in
space aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia and the International Space Station.
Julie Taymor
In 1998, Taymor became the first woman to win the Tony Award for Best Direction of a musical,
and also won a Tony for Best Costume, for her landmark production of The Lion King. She also served
as the original director and co-book writer of the Broadway smash Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. Her
feature film directorial debut was Titus, starring Anthony Hopkins. Her film Frida, starring Selma
Hayek, was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning two. She made her Broadway debut in
1996 with Juan Darien: A Carnival Mass, which was nominated for five Tony Awards. Other theatre
work includes The Green Bird, Titus Andronicus, The Temptest, The Taming of the Shrew, The Transposed Heads
and Liberty’s Taken. Beyond theatre and screen, Taymor has directed five operas. Her filmed version of
Oedipus Rex won her an Emmy Award.

I never considered becoming an astronaut before

In 2006, legendary writer and producer Vy Higginsen and gospel legend Dr. Emily “Cissy” Houston
joined forces to teach aspiring teenagers about the importance of gospel music as an art form. Gospel
for Teens is a program of the Mama Foundation of the Arts and Vy’s Higginsen’s School of Gospel,
Jazz and R&B Arts that has grown to be a highly respected and influential program for youth between
the ages of 13 and 19.
Franz Harary
Over the past 30 years, more people have seen the magic of Franz Harary globally than any other
magician. The Associated Press wrote that his magic “is arguably the most innovative of our time.”
He has appeared on television shows such as the first episode of NBC’s TheWorld’s Greatest Magic, where
he made the Space Shuttle vanish, as well as starring in his own television shows, Magic Planet and
Masters of Illusion. Harary was invited to perform as part of the Jackson’s Victory Tour in 1984 and
has also worked with N*sync, Cher, Snoop Dogg, Tupac Shakur, Tone Loc, Styx, Dr. Dre, Usher,
Boyz II Men, Queen Latifah, Hammer, Tina Turner, Reba McEntire and Missy Elliot. Harary has
made indelible contributions to the shows of Las Vegas, as practically every performance features
some of his work.

Research Institute. He is the author of six best-selling books including Eat More, Weight Less; The
Spectrum and Dr. Dean Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease.
Peter Diamandis, chairman and CEO of the X Prize Foundation, (a non-profit organization
focused on designing and launching global incentive prizes in order to drive radical breakthroughs
for the benefit of humanity), shared the success that the strategy of prizes supporting innovation has
delivered dramatic results.
Niall Ferguson
Ken Dychtwald is the founding president and CEO of Age Wave, which helps companies and
government groups develop products and services for boomers and mature adults. His client list
includes more than half of the Fortune 500. In addition, he is the author of 16 books, including
The Power Years: A User’s Guide to the Rest of Your Life.
David Walker, a former U.S. Comptroller General from 1998 to 2008 and founder and CEO of
the Comeback America Initiative, delivered a plan to address the skyrocketing national debt.
Somaly Mam, a Cambodian author and human rights advocate focusing on sex trafficking,
discussed the fastest-growing criminal enterprise in the world and delivered a plan to end human
trafficking. A victim herself, she has dedicated her life to stopping the crisis.

Spencer Wells, a geneticist, anthropologist, author and Explorer-in-Residence at the National
Geographic Society, discussed how the Genomics Project will change all our lives.
Susan Eisenhower, granddaughter to the late president Dwight Eisenhower, is president of the
Eisenhower Group, which provides strategic counsel of political, business and public affairs projects.
She discussed international security and the relationship between the Russian Federation and the
United States.

Wendy Kopp founded Teach for America, a national teaching corps, in order to help others

The Education Foundation in conjunction with audience members organized the leadership of both
the Collier and Lee County schools to help bring the “Little Kids Rock,” a free music lesson program
created by David Wish, to students in the districts.
Southwest Florida Foundation implemented a “social entrepreneurs” training and resource program.
Leaders at Edison State College developed a plan to create an “Imagine Solutions” day for graduating
seniors in order to bring perspective on how they can be part of their communities as they begin the
next phase of life.
It’s the potency of one person or two, to change the
world through the power of an idea, the passion of
involvement, the energy of total commitment and
engagement…

A group has formed to create and implement a strategy to more effectively address “end of life”
economics via living wills—with a plan that would partner with insurance companies to help bring a
solution to this very costly problem.
A Collier County teacher created a course curriculum utilizing social entrepreneur’s stories and got
state approval to include the class in the Collier schools system.
100 non-profit leaders are being provided with scholarships to attend this year’s Imagine Solutions
Conference at the Philharmonic Center for the Arts and have been invited by Community Foundation
of Collier County and the Southwest Florida Community Foundation to a luncheon whose goal is to
surface three big ideas, which the groups might collaborate on.
A local chapter was created of the Somaly Mam Foundation to defeat human trafficking.
Local participants in our I.D.E.A. (Innovative Discussions Enabling Actions) teams have begun
working with institutions such as Florida Gulf Coast University to use a combination of technologies
to power their way to the future, including such innovations as a solar lake and a biomass conversion
facility powered by kenaf, a biofuel crop grown locally. IDEA team members have also tackled
workplace health, and conceptualized a method to increase access to Immokalee’s iTech school.
Simply put, you must learn before you can act. And the 2013 Imagine Solutions Conference is giving
you the tools to move forward with the big ideas that might just now be a spark. The Imagine Solution
Conference is the oxygen that can feed that flame.
