Thank you for supporting
Circle 1000 today and
through the years to bring
exceptional staff, scholarship
and cutting edge programs
to benefit all of the cancer
patients and their families
who come to Hoag in their
time of need.
Beth Knapp & Father Gregory Boyle
Our 28th Annual Circle 1000 Founders' Brunch, held on
May 4, 2015, was a morning filled with laughter and
poignant introspection from Father Gregory Boyle. He
opened his world to us with the humorous and touching
stories of the men and women who come to him and
Homeboy Industries to turn their lives around. Father Boyle,
who is in remission, brought us to laughter, tears and
silence during his keynote speech.
This year we also celebrated the memory of our dear friend,
Arden Flamson. Those of us who knew her have the honor of
remembering the woman who passionately dedicated herself
to service. She would've been proud of our accomplishments
and urged us to continue on, knowing that every effort we
make helps one more patient at Hoag access the care and
advanced treatments that may save their life.
We also called upon cancer survivors and their caretakers
to stand up so we could recognize their courage and the
hope they bring to all of us. As I reflect on this tradition, I'm
honored to be part of a group of generous donors and friends
who see how we are making a difference in cancer care.

GGiving in 2014 Makes Lasting Impact
Circle 1000 is an essential resource that not only supports Hoag in conducting groundbreaking research and clinical trials that
improve treatments for cancers, but also provides the programs, technology, clinicians and facilities dedicated to cancer care.
• $300,000: Nurse Educator in the Cancer Outpatient Treatment Center for two years
• $300,000: Clinical Research Nurse Coordinator for two years
• $150,000: Discretionary fund to be used as needed by Hoag Family Cancer Institute
• $50,000: Oncology Staff Education
M
Melanoma and Advanced Skin Cancer Program
Start-up Expenses - $250,000
The generosity of Circle 1000 helped launch the Hoag Melanoma and Advanced Skin Cancer Program, in collaboration with USC
Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, which now offers patients a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach to the evaluation
and treatment of this increasingly common malignancy as well as other advanced skin cancers. In helping launch the High Risk
Melanoma Clinic, Circle 1000 has provided a much needed service for patients who are at higher risk for developing this disease
to minimize or eliminate their risk or receive the earliest diagnosis possible. Orange County has been noted to have one of the
highest incidence rates of melanoma in the country. If there is a delay in recognizing and removing a melanoma, it can spread
throughout the body. But when discovered early, melanoma is curable.
NNurse Navigator for 2015 - $150,000
Because of your generosity, Sarah* has had Melanoma nurse navigator, Lori Berberet at her side.
While pregnant with her first child, Sarah learned she had melanoma and that it had already spread to her brain. Lori Berberet
arranged for Sarah to have minimally invasive gamma knife surgery with Hoag’s expert neurosurgeon within days of Sarah’s
baby’s birth. They became so close that Sarah asked that Lori be present when she received her prognosis after surgery.
When Sarah learned she would need additional treatment, she was scared and uncertain of what to do next. Lori quickly arranged
for Sarah to see the melanoma surgeon, Dr. Burt Eisenberg and melanoma medical oncologist, Dr. George Semeniuk at the same
time in Hoag’s Melanoma Clinic to come up with the best treatment plan for Sarah.
Lori is now helping Sarah navigate each step of that plan and talks with Sarah, Sarah’s husband and mother to answer all of their
questions and concerns on Sarah’s treatment and is a constant source of compassion and support.

Nursing Conference - $50,000
Hoag's 10th Annual Oncology Nursing Conference, "Embracing Excellence," was made possible by the generosity of Circle 1000.
As newer cancer agents and treatments are developed, nurses now more than ever need be informed about side effect management.
Circle 1000's support not only empowers nurses to stay updated, but gives them working knowledge to best support patients
through their cancer journey.
During this two-day event, 180 oncology and radiation oncology nurses (including 69 Hoag nurses, as well as 8 Hoag Oncology
physician office staff nurses) learned from the nationally- and internationally-known experts in the field of oncology care.
This conference which attracted nurses from California, Oregon, Washington and Arizona, provided a comprehensive learning
experience that covered practical strategies and tools, clinical content as well as survivor stories.
