Emcees & Judges
Dale Morris
© Michael Lane
Steve Kilby
John Turner
Dale Morris (Emcee) has been playing and judging at our region’s
fiddlers conventions for almost forty years. He also has been serving as a
festival emcee for over a dozen years, and his experience as a musician,
convention judge, and also as a music historian gives him a unique
background as a Master of Ceremonies.
Steve Kilby (Judge) is a 30-year veteran of many bands, recordings,
and competitions. Steve learned much of the music he plays from his
grandfather, and is honored to be part of a living musical tradition. Steve is
a popular instructor with the JAM Program and also at John C. Campbell
Folk School. Over the years, Steve’s guitar wizardry has earned him
many honors including: Seven-time Fiddler’s Grove guitar champion, two
first-place ribbons and a best all-around performer trophy from Galax
convention, and North Carolina State guitar champion. Instrumental
Specialty: guitar, mandolin, bass, banjo
Trevor McKenzie
Lynn Worth
Trevor McKenzie (Judge) is a multi-instrumentalist and singer originally
from southwest Virginia. Encouraged initially by family and church music,
his formal musical training began at Jim Lloyd’s Barbershop in Rural
Retreat, Virginia. Trevor currently lives in western North Carolina where
he performs as a sideman with several regional acts including the Elkville
String Band and the Laurel Creek String Band. On weekdays, he puts his
historical knowledge and dusting skills to work in the archives of the W. L.
Eury Appalachian Collection at Appalachian State University. Instrumental
Specialty: fiddle
Lynn Worth (Judge) is a native of Ashe County who now lives in Sparta. She plays old time and
bluegrass on a number of instruments, performs regularly at the Alleghany Jubilee in Sparta
and with several local bands, and she was one of the founders of the Alleghany County Fiddlers
Convention. She is also a freelance editor. Instrumental Specialty: bass, banjo, fiddle, a little guitar.
John Turner (Lead Dance Judge) is from Boone and has performed and participated in all levels
of competition for over twenty years. His specialty is a cross between flat foot dancing and buck
dancing. John is also a familiar caller of dances in the area. You can find him at the Todd Mercantile
for their community dances on the ‘teenth’ Friday of each month. He conducts workshops and
teaches freshmen classes in traditional dance at ASU.
Sound provided by Tim Varner and Jerry Smith.

time. Work is done on arrangements of selected material, and participants learn how to begin a song, how to order solos, how to end a song, and
how to communicate with the other musicians. Geared for beginners, these sessions are also open to experienced musicians who are welcomed
to assist with technique and timing.

Strictly Strings
The members of Strictly Strings Band came
up through the ranks of the Watauga County
JAM program and started playing out in public
about 2 years ago. They all play multiple
instruments, also having taken banjo, mandolin
and guitar classes in JAM. Most have gone
to music camps such as Peach Bottom, Pete
Wernick Camp and Swannanoa Gathering, as
well as the pre-concert workshops by musicians
performing at the Jones House set up by Mark
Freed. They are the next generation of Old
Time, Bluegrass and other genres and are like
sponges, soaking up the music. These young
musicians have a heart to play and have parents
who cared enough to put them in JAM, and
now are proud to take them to the many gigs
where they are requested.

Founded about 18 years ago, the Zephyr
Lightning Bolts have enjoyed performing
around the areas of Northwest North Carolina
and Southwest Virginia. Steve Bowen is the
bass player. His wife, Diane plays clawhammer
banjo, and their son, Jacob Bowen is the fiddler.
Friend, Chester McMillian is the guitarist.
The band has reconfigured over the years
with several guitarists, but now has a strong
musician in Chester. A somewhat unique
feature of the band is that all the four musicians
contribute to the vocals. Originally the Bowens
lived in the small Surry County Community of
Zephyr (Hence the Band’s name), but about
eight years ago, they moved across the Mitchell
River into the Wilkes County Community of
Pleasant Ridge, Steve’s home place.

Junior Appalachian Musicians
JAM! Ashe County’s young people are jammin’! The Junior
Appalachian Musicians Program – or JAM - provides free
instruction from local musicians and educators on how
to play traditional musical instruments. Instruction is
offered to students in grades 4-6 on the banjo, guitar, and
fiddle through the After School Programs at Blue Ridge,
Westwood, Mountain View Elementary Schools, and at
Ashe County Middle School.
The Ashe JAM Program began in 2001, and since that time
over 500 students have taken advantage of this unique
program. JAM began in nearby Alleghany County under the
leadership of well-known fiddler and musician Helen White. JAM programs operate throughout western North Carolina as well as in
South Carolina and Virginia.
Ashe County’s JAM instructors are Martha Spencer and Chris Testerman. Students receive instruction twice a week from October
through May. They also have the opportunity to participate in several special projects including the popular JAM Club for “graduates”
of the elementary school program and in the weekly Youth JAM Sessions held at the Ashe Civic Center on Tuesdays from 6:15-7:30.
It’s free for musicians ages 7-18 (anyone under 13 must be accompanied by an adult). All players are welcome!
JAM provides students with a positive experience in the arts and offers them access to a lifetime activity. Keeping the traditions of
the mountains alive and passing that love of music on to the next generation is important to the Arts Council. Funds raised from the
Ashe County Bluegrass and Old Time Fiddlers Convention will be used to support the Ashe Junior Appalachian Musicians Program
for the coming school year.
For more information about JAM, check it out at http://ashecountyarts.org/junior-appalachian-musicians.
Ashe County Arts Council
The Ashe County Arts Council was formed in 1977 and has been leading the way in using the arts to enrich the cultural life of the
region. Inspiration, dedication, vision, and hard work have all contributed to the richness that abounds with the arts in Ashe County.
The Arts Council operates two buildings in Ashe County. The historic WPA building, the Ashe Arts Center, in downtown West
Jefferson, houses the offices for the Arts Council, The Gallery, and Gallery Shop. The Ashe Civic Center, a 300 seat theatre space,
also serves as the home of the Ashe County Little Theatre. These two facilities offer numerous options for arts programming under
the Arts Council’s leadership.
