Leaving West Jefferson, go North on N.C. 194
for approximately 5 miles. This will lead to the
small town of Warrensville. From Warrensville,
head West on N.C. 88. Along N.C. 88, one will notice on the right an oddity - Sharpes Dam, a small
hydroelectric dam. Continue heading West on
N.C. 88. Notice the Log Cabin Motors Outdoor
Museum as you pass the Clifton Community.
Continue through the hamlet of Fig and then turn
right onto Big Laurel Road. The next gas station
will be 25 miles away. Approximately 7 miles up
Big Laurel Road will be South Flatwood Road on
your right. Big Laurel meanders through steep
mountains. One will see quaint working farms
gracing the banks of Big Laurel Creek. Upon
reaching South Flatwood, you can now consider
yourself truly on an Ashe County back road. The
road is mostly graveled but at times quite steep.
The Jefferson Post
and these sponsoring
businesses are pleased to
offer this “back roads”

road. Those who chose to keep to the beaten
path will proceed toward Rock Fence Road.
Rock Fence will be to your right. Along the way
to Rock Fence, notice Pond Mountain with an
elevation of 4600 feet. Tree-lined at first but then
the road breaks open, allowing one a spectacular

narrow road with bicyclers and walkers. As
you follow Railroad, one will pass through the

into the Brownwood Community. Do not cross
the river here. Journey forward about 3.8 miles
into Todd. Once in Todd, be sure to visit Todd
Mercantile and the Train Depot. Go through
and relive the busy days gone by when Todd was
a bustling lumber town.
From Todd Mercantile, resume traveling on
Railroad Grade Road for about .5 mile. This will
take you to a stop sign. Go straight through the
stop sign. You will now be on Three Top Road.
Notice to your right the old Todd School Building and a little farther down the road, Blackburn’s Tabernacle – both are small structures
with lots of history. Continue North on Three
Top Road. You will pass through the community
of Toliver, Woodford and Trout. This section has
some very nice views.
At Trout, turn right onto Ben Bolen Road.
This will take you through the valleys separating
Three Top Mountain and Bluff Mountain. The
Nature Conservancy owns part of Bluff Mountain and periodically offers specialized tours
