27 June 2009, New York City, a severe storm
damaged power lines and left 17,000 homes
without electricity. Mieczyskaw Mil, 64, was
one of the affected parties. His power line
serviced only 17 homes and therefore was
one of the last to be repaired. Seven hours
after the line fell, Mieczyskaw Mil finally
lost his patience.
The old man had been shooed away
repeatedly by firefighters who were
guarding the power line. “Police and
firefighters literally chased him away.
We did everything we could,” said Dick
Martinkovic, commissioner of public safety in
Sullivan County. But they were not prepared
for the homeowner’s sudden bold move.

Frustrated with waiting, Mil emerged from his
home shortly after midnight with an industrial
power saw in his hand and plastic bags on
his feet. He stood in a puddle of water and
attempted to saw through a 4800-volt feeder
line that was dangling off the pole. He fell and
became tangled in the hissing and buzzing live
wire. While emergency responders waited for
utility workers to shut down the power, Mil was
busy being killed by continuous electrocution.
The story says it all. He was repeatedly shooed
away from the power line, but insisted on
cutting it while standing in a puddle, and now
is safely out of the gene pool!

MESSAGE FROM THE GROUP MANAGING DIRECTOR
As another year comes to a close the
Trivantage Group continues to explore new
markets in mining, utilities, data centres
and the industrial markets. The Australian
economy is not in good shape with only
the resource boom the difference between
floating above water and a recession.
Economic news from around the world does
little to provide the necessary comfort for
the commercial sector to move forward with
projected growth.
The business continues to grow into new
retail markets with significant penetration
in key service and maintenance areas. The
integration of the business platform is now
complete and a retraining or refresher
is being conducted at present to refine,
develop, educate and add value to an
already solid framework. Over the next
6-9 months of consolidation, the Group
will restructure its operation to meet the

demand of the new emerging markets and
opportunities that will be available to our
dedicated and skilled staff to grow with us
in entering these new frontiers.
The path ahead over the coming months
will be a difficult one with customers
demanding more from contractors and
suppliers, our business continues to
perform strongly and while perceived
pressure exists in this environment – our
products, services and change management
process will provide positive results ahead. I
look forward to building a prosperous future
with you through the Trivantage Group in
2012.
On behalf of the Board of Directors of
Trivantage, I wish you and your families a
Merry Christmas and Safe New Year.

WHAT’S HAPPENING?
SJE QLD
GOLD COAST UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
The $1.76 billion, 750 bed Gold Coast
University Hospital at Parklands Drive,
Southport is part of a major expansion
of health services for the Gold Coast
community. This project is the largest public
health infrastructure project currently
underway in Australia.
SJ Electric supplied thirteen MSB’s and six
UPS Boards for the Central Energy, Mental
Health and Pathology Buildings between
February and October 2011 with a combined
value of ~$2.5M.
Each of the MSB’s has two mains supplies.
The mains supplies were controlled and
monitored by a synchronization circuit.
Smart Metering was installed extensively
throughout each MSB, including each
incomer and many of the outgoing feeders
for monitoring and diagnostic analysis of the
supplies.
The Switchboard Department were faced
with a number of unique challenges in the
design and construction of this project.
These challenges included the design of
double busbar droppers to limit the size of
each switchboards footprint and the design
of the synchronization check circuit for the
dual supplies to each switchboard.
and the effect this had on our ability to
meet the FAT and delivery dates. Through
a sustained effort by SJE personnel we
were able to minimize the impact the floods
had on the manufacture of the MSB’s,
without compromising the quality of the
switchboards supplied.
Arguably the biggest challenge faced was
the floods that affected SE Qld and the
Albion workshop in January of this year

Melbourne Olympic Park – Storm
water Harvesting System
Church Electrical Industries were recently
awarded the contract for the design,
construction, installation and commission of
a major Storm Water Harvesting system at
the above iconic site.
The site included Rod Laver Arena, Hisense
Arena and the common ground between. Our
site works included a mixture of Optic Fibre,
Ethernet and remote I/O as part of the high
level communication required for the control
of the pumping and control systems.
The system in brief diverts storm water via
a new pumping station into a massive tank
(4.5 million litres) under the oval between the
two arenas. This water is tested for salinity
and other matters before being stored in the
tank. From here the water is then pumped
into a treatment plant where it is chemically
[2]

treated and filtered before then being
pumped to other tanks for distribution to the
facilities grass and garden areas.
Besides the obvious installation of control
and wiring to the treatment plant and
pump stations, the main challenge was the
integration of new controls to the existing
building management system and SCADA.
Our Shane Whiteside and Paul Turner made
this difficult task look easy. Also special
mention to Scott Dinnage and a varied team
of electricians for a very neat electrical
installation.
Thanks also to the engineering team led
by Rob Trevena for a design that is always
crucial to every project.

in the challenging time frame of works
in which a complete existing mechanical
airconditioning system was demolished /
decommissioned and all new mechanical
equipment reinstated and commissioned to
form a new complete operational mechanical
air conditioning system.
The works had to be achieved within a five
week construction program, including
design, drafting and approval, manufacture
of MSSBs, pre site rough in works and
changeover of MSSB 1 and 2.
The equipment decommissioned and
reinstated consisted of: Chillers, Boilers,

SEME SOLUTIONS have been engaged by
COOPER AND OXLEY builders to implement
the entire electronic security solution for the
WESTERN AUSTRALIAN DEPARTMENT OF
CORRECTIONS during construction of the
new WEST KIMBERLEY REGIONAL PRISON
in Derby, located 2500 km north of Perth.
The $8M contract awarded in 2010 is
managed both from Perth, where Geoff
Kidgell is responsible as Project Manager,
and from the Derby site where Darryl
Danielsen oversees site management and
dealing with the daily activities such client
liaison and work scheduling. The project
will run for approximately 18 months,
and upon completion will be one of the
largest integrated security and surveillance
solutions for Corrections in Australia.
Microwave systems on the prison perimeter,
all serving as the prime perimeter detection
barrier. The perimeter detection and internal
security monitoring devices are combined
with a state-of-the-art camera system
incorporating various Thermal Imaging
cameras, movable Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ)
cameras, and in excess of 240 fixed cameras
to monitor the entire prison. The cameras
form part of the Hybrid (combined analogue
and digital) CCTV system incorporating

As part of their major infrastructure upgrade,
Ladd Electrical (NSW) was engaged By Robert
Man Pty Ltd to carry out the mechanical
electrical works at Vodafone Hutchison Australia
data centre at their Pymont, Sydney site.
The project consisted of cable and power
upgrade for the installation of two new Chillers
and associated chilled water pumps complete
with variable speed drive control to make up an
N+1 arrangement.
Being a data centre, shutting the cooling system
down to carry out the works was not an option.
Ladd Electrical locally constructed a switchboard
complete with two automatic transfer switches
(ATS) for the supply of two temporary chillers and
associated chilled water pumps complete with
variable speed drive control to again make up an
N+1 arrangement whilst the works were being
carried out.
The project has been delivered with minimal
fuss and complication which is credit to all staff
involved.

Fabio,
Please pass on my thanks to the team from LADD that
completed the successful power upgrade works at VHA
Pyrmont - Rick Zuzul, Brendan Gronow, Carlos Garcia &
Craig Copland.
They were patience and positive during the 2 hour wait for
our client - who turned up late, and then had the wrong
building representative present and worked against the clock
without stopping for almost 6 hours to ensure that ALL the
works got completed.
The quality of work was also excellent and there was little
need to inspect cleanliness in boards or of the work areas on
completion.
Thanks also to you for your help ensuring works proceeded
on the night with little fuss on our side.

TECH TALK
TIME TO REFOCUS AND REFLECT
Of late there have been a number of small incidents and even
although most have been minor they are accumulative and
require your urgent attention and action.
The Destination Zero philosophy, Safety Right Now, Everyone,
Everyday and the strict rules of a Construction Site are now to be
treated as our minimum standard and
shall apply across the
board whether you are carrying out service work or conducting
major project works “ONE RULE ONE STANDARD”
Please get this message across to all.
1. Ensure all licences and induction cards are current and that
you sign onto the site prior to any works commencing.
2. Ensure Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) have been
developed for the tasks that have to be done, ensure all
persons on the task have signed on, ensure all check lists
within the Safety Manual and folder are completed and signed
of, ensure your staff member has the suitable training to carry
out the task he is about to undertake.
3. E
nsure proper Isolation procedures have been carried out and
the appropriate lock of devises have been attached and that
Danger Tags and Padlocks are applied. Note sticking PVC tape
across a CB is not acceptable.
4. “WORKING ON LIVE EQUIPMENT OR CIRCUITS IS NOT
PERMITTED”
5. “REDUNDANT CABLES” under no circumstances shall we
leave a cable in a roof space without first trying to remove
it or at the least terminating each core into a connector and
placing in a box and if known the origin of the cable place
an out of service tag on the box listing its where it’s from.
“EQUALLY IMPORTANT” if you come upon a redundant cable
treat it as live until proven otherwise and make safe report
it to the client and your manager / supervisor and have it
documented in writing.
6. Maintain a high standard of
workmanship.
7. Ensure the appropriate Tests
are carried out on completion
of works and that the test results
are documented and all hand
over paper work is complete this
includes Certificates of Compliance
8. Check site rules in regards to working
on ladders and if acceptable NEVER
stand above the third top step. Note
a ladder should only be used for short term tasks or when there
is no other method of carrying out your task an example might
be in a plant room where it is not practicable to use anything
else, but please note if this is the case make sure this has been
added to your SWMS
9. Tool Box Safety meetings are a mandatory requirement and
as a minimum one per month is to be carried out with all staff
members.
10. Maintain a high standard of housekeeping this also applies to
company vehicles
11. Comply with all Duty of Care Obligations – Client and Site
Rules and Trivantage Policies and Procedures.
12. Project Managers / Supervisors to carry out detailed
inspections when on site and at final sign off and document
findings.
13. Service Managers / Supervisors to carry our random checks
and document findings.
14. All electrical installations to be fully tested, commissioned and
documented test results before handing over to the client for
use, this applies to progressive hand over (i.e. remodel) or full
hand over (new site).

George, Brendan Stringer, Neal Farrelly and Nick Small (BNS Racing), has
now turned into something much more than that. In May 2010 they invested in
a six month old red fawn greyhound named Vicky, and now 18 months on their
dog has started to hit the track.
At Albion Park the boys finally had a chance to see what their dog was capable
off, when it raced in a maiden over 331M. After jumping out last, Vicky flew
home to finish in 2nd in what was an impressive debut and meant she qualified
for the maiden final a week later. The final however, was a disappointing
race. After being dealt a tricky box and receiving an early knock, she fought
on bravely to finish 4th. This came as a blessing in disguise a week later, and
meant she could still qualify for a maiden series in Grafton, on the 27th of
September, Vicky recorded the fastest time of the day, leading from start to
finish in her qualifying heat over 407M. A week later she did it all again, this
time she trailed the leader for 98% of the race but grabbed the lead when it
mattered most.
To date Vicky or Scissor Queen (Knocka Norris x Surf Queen) as she known in
the racing world, has had 4 starts for 2 wins and 1 place and has won $2800 in
prize money. The boys have also invested in two other pups that they hope will
have similar success on the track.
We look forward to hearing about Vicky’s progress in the racing world.
BOOK REVIEW
Harry Potter
and the
Deathly
Hallows by
J.K. Rowling
To celebrate the
release of Harry
Potter and the
Deathly Hallows part
2 on DVD and BluRay
in Australia on the
16 November 2011, I
thought I’d dedicate
this book review
to the novel that
inspired the movie.
Harry is now seventeen years old. Everything
he has faced over the last six years–every battle
with the Death Eaters, every close call at death’s
door, every encounter with Voldemort–has led
him to the moment where his destiny is to be
fulfilled. As his friends battle odds to protect
those they love and the peace they treasure so
dearly, Harry marches on through the Forbidden
Forest to face his death head on. He has watched
his friends fight and die along aside of him.
He has lost his parents, his godfather, and his
greatest mentor. But Harry knows even in the
tragedy of the last six years, he has gained so
much more. With the thoughts of his friends to
comfort him, his parents, Dumbledore, Sirius and
Lupin marching by him, Harry lifts his wand and
prepares for his final battle not simply against
Lord Voldemort but against anyone who chooses
evil over good.
In Harry Potter and the Dealthy Hallows, J. K.
Rowling brings a triumphant and brilliant end
to the series that has defined a generation. As a
whole series, Rowling has done something only
few other authors like Tolkien have done. She
has created a series of books that can be read by
child and adult alike and enjoyed in similar but
slightly different ways.
For those who read the Harry Potter series, this
was a highly anticipated novel. Alas, it became a
bitter-sweet ending, as I came to the realization
that once I finished the final chapter it would
be the last I hear of Harry, Ron and Hermione’s
adventures, but I consider myself grateful for
having been taken on such a whirlwind adventure
and feeling like I was part of one of the best
stories ever told.
