Apertura all’insegna dei colpi di scena per il pattinaggio
artistico alla WU Trentino 2013 3, con il favorito numero
uno della prova maschile, il vicecampione del mondo Denis
Ten, costretto al forfait a causa di un infortunio alla caviglia
patito durante il warm-up. Il pattinatore kazako spera ora di
poter recuperare in fretta in vista dell’appuntamento imminente delle Olimpiadi di Sochi 2014.
In sua assenza è stato il cinese Nan Song ad imporsi
nell’odierno short program, in cui grazie ad una prova priva
di errori ha totalizzato un punteggio di 81.56. Alle spalle
del pattinatore cinese, già vicecampione del mondo junior
nel 2010, si è classificato il russo Gordei Gorshov: con un
punteggio di 70.73, il campione russo ha staccato il giapponese Yoji Tsuboi, fermo a 69.47.
Dei 32 atleti solamente i primi 24 parteciperanno al programma libero il 12 Dicembre, dove si assegnerà le prime
medaglie del pattinaggio artistico.
“Mi sentivo molto bene oggi, l’ambiente di gara era ideale
e dunque tutto è andato per il meglio. Sono molto contento
anche per il mio paese che da me si attende molto. Questa
è la mia prima gara in Italia e devo dire che ho apprezzato
particolarmente l’ambiente che ho trovato qui a Trento”

The figure skating event at the WU Trentino 2013 started
with a coup de théâtre. The world vice champion Denis Ten
of Kazakhstan injured his ankle during warm-up. He hopes
to recover quickly to be fit for the upcoming Winter Olympic
Games in Sochi.
China’s Nan Song - current national champion and 2010
World Junior Championships silver medallist - won the
short program with a total score of 81.56. The second rank
went to the junior world vice-champion, Gordei Gorshov
(RUS), with 70.73. The Japanese Yoji Tsuboi took the third
place (69.47).
32 athletes took part in the event but only the 24 first will
participate in the free program on December 12th, where
will be distributed the first medals of figure skating.

Eva Samkova (Rep. Ceca) e Nikolay Olyunin (Russia)
si sono qualificati per la finale di domani dello snowboardcross con i migliori tempi nella giornata inaugurale
dell’Universiade Trentino 2013 sul monte Bondone.
Samkova, 20 anni, è reduce dalla vittoria in Coppa del
mondo a Montafon ed è la grande favorita per l’oro, soprattutto dopo il forfait dell’austriaca Maria Ramberger.
Alla Samkova è bastata una manche (non ha disputato la
seconda) per mettere in riga le avversarie con il tempo di
45.72: Katerina Chourova (Rep. Ceca) è seconda (48.18)
e Zuzanna Smykala (Polonia), settima a Montafon, è terza
(48.30). Quarta la giapponese Karen Iwadare seguita a 2
centesimi dalla russa Irina Kovaleva. In campo maschile
la finale sarà probabilmente tra alcuni dei protagonisti
dell’Olimpiade di Sochi. Olyunin, 22 anni, è stato il più
veloce in entrambe le discese (miglior tempo 43.68).
Piazza d’onore provvisoria per uno dei favoriti, l’austriaco
Hanno Douschan (44.55), e terza posizione per il polacco
Dawid Wal, il più giovane del trio con i suoi 21 anni, grazie
alla seconda discesa (44.65). Emil Novak (Rep. Ceca) ha
ottenuto il quarto tempo (1.18).
Eva Samkova and Nikolay Olyunin finished with the best
time in the snowboard cross qualifications on the inaugural
day of WU Trentino 2013 at Monte Bondone. Samkova,
20, who has recently won the World Cup in Montafon, is
the favourite since Austria’s Maria Ramberger withdrew.
Samkova took the lead with a finish in 45.72 in the first run
(she didn’t take part in the second).
Behind Katerina Chourova (CZE) finished in 48.18 and
Zuzanna Smykala (POL) in 48.30. Japan’s Karen Iwadare
is fourth with two hundredths of a second better than Irina
Kovaleva of Russia.
On the men’s side, the final will probably be between the
possible stars of Sochi Olympic Games. Olyunin, 22, was
the fastest in both runs (best time: 43.68). The Austrian
Hanno Douschan (44.55) came second and the Polish
Dawid Wal took the third place thanks to his second round
(44.65). Emil Novak (CZE) finished with the fourth time
(1.18).

guests coming to Italy for this occasion, the athletes and

the Trentino mountains, will be truly memorable.

FISU Family to welcome you here in Trento, to the Opening
Ceremony of the 26th edition of the Winter Universiade,
the largest winter multi-sport event in the world for the year
2013.
The Universiade is a place where student-athletes progress
in their dual project toward the greatest degree of human
achievement.
Today’s champions, they focus on high-level sports competitions. Tomorrow’s leaders, they socialise and acquire the
acute knowledge and
comprehension of a diverse world.
I wish you, my friends, all the best for this 26th Winter
Universiade which, I have no doubt, will be part of the best
memories of your life.
È un grande onore per me e per tutta la famiglia FISU augurarvi il benvenuto nella città di Trento, in occasione della
Cerimonia Inaugurale della 26esima edizione delle Universiadi Invernali, uno dei più grandi eventi di sport invernali al
mondo per l’edizione 2013.
L’Universiade è il teatro in cui gli studenti-atleti portano
avanti un duplice progetto di evoluzione verso il traguardo
umano più elevato.
Come campioni del presente, s’impegnano in competizioni
sportive di alto livello. Come leader del futuro, socializzano

Le squadre dell’hockey su ghiaccio sono state le prime a
competere nella XXVI Winter Universiade Trentino 2013,
cominciando il torneo un giorno prima della Cerimonia
d’apertura.
L’Italia ha inaugurato il torneo maschile ad Alba di Canazei
battendo la Lettonia per 4-2. L’eroe della giornata è stato
Simon Kostner, autore di un gol e di un assist.
La seconda sfida del girone A ha visto il successo degli
Stati Uniti sulla Svezia per 2-0 e raggiungere l’Italia in vetta
alla classifica. Soddisfatto a fine gara anche il tecnico canadese Gardiner Macdougall, dopo il brillante esordio dei
nordamericani, che si sono imposti per 12-1 sul Giappone
sul ghiaccio di Cavalese.
«Ci tenevamo a cominciare bene e a collaudare gli schemi
che abbiamo provato nelle ultime settimane - ha commentato a fine gara -. Abbiamo giocato su buoni ritmi nella
prima frazione, lasciando poi L’iniziativa ai giapponesi nel
secondo periodo. Però sul finale, ho visto la nostra squadra
crescere e rispondere al meglio». Non è sembrato scoraggiarsi troppo l’attaccante giapponese Takayuki Katsuta:
«Sapevamo di giocare contro una delle rappresentative
migliori al mondo e abbiamo cercato di reagire. Certo, ci
aspettiamo altre due partite difficili con Kazakistan e Ucraina, ma siamo qui per mettercela tutta».
A Pergine, si sono disputati i tre incontri del torneo femminile. Canada e Giappone hanno vinto senza problemi i loro
incontri, battendo rispettivamente Spagna (21-0) e Gran
Bretagna (10-1). Successo anche degli Stati Uniti sulla
ussia per 4-2. Nessuna partita in programma per mercoledì 11 dicembre, i tornei riprendono dai tre campi trentini
giovedì 12.
The hockey teams were the first to compete at the Winter
Universiade Trentino 2013 as they came in action one day
prior to the Opening Ceremony.
Italy inaugurated the men’s tournament in Alba di Canazei
by stunning Latvia 4:2. The man of the match was Simon
Kostner, scoring one goal and doing an assist for one of his
team-mates.
The second match of Pool A saw USA beat Sweden 2:0
and join Italy with 3 points. Canadian coach Gardiner MacDougall, expressed his satisfaction after Team Canada’s
brilliant debut, taking a 12:1 victory over Japan 12:1 at the
ice rink of Cavalese.
“We really wanted to do our best in this match, we also
wanted to test some schemes we practiced during these
last weeks. In the first period we had a good pace, in the
second one we let the Japanese team take the initiative.
Anyway, during the match’s final part, our team did its best”.
Japanese forward Takayuki Katsuta did not seem discouraged at all: “We knew we were going to play against one of
the world’s best teams and we tried to take up the challenge. We also know that we are going to have two other
tough matches against Kazakhstan and Ukraine, but we
are here to do our best”.
Pergine was the set of the three matches of the Women’s
tournament. Canada and Japan easily won their games,
beating respectively Spain (21:0) and Great Britain (10:1).
USA recorded a win as well against Russia (4:2).
No matches are scheduled for Wednesday 11th, the action
will resume on Thursday 12th.

occasione dell’apertura dell’Universiade Trentino 2013,
ha inviato un messaggio a Sergio Anesi, Presidente del
Comitato Organizzatore.
“Desidero rivolgere più fervidi auguri di successo al comitato organizzatore e ai numerosi studenti universitari che
partecipano alle Universiadi Trentino 2013.
La presenza di giovani da più di 50 paesi riflette l’importanza della manifestazione e, soprattutto, conferma il
ruolo dello sport quale strumento di dialogo, integrazione
e incontro tra paesi, popoli e culture diverse.
Come ci ha insegnato Nelson Mandela, lo sport può abbattere barriere, unire i popoli e cambiare il mondo. Sono
convinto che i partecipanti alle Universiadi sapranno raccogliere questo messaggio e contribuire alla costruzione
di un futuro di page”.

pays tribute to Giuseppe Verdi
Tradizione e innovazione - in un mix di ricorsi storici e con
uno sguardo al futuro - hanno caratterizzato la cerimonia
d’apertura della XXVI Winter Universiade 2013, che questo
pomeriggio alle 18 ha aperto ufficialmente l’atteso evento
internazionale che ha richiamato in Trentino oltre 3000
atleti di 61 diverse nazioni.
Un condensato di spettacolo tra passato e presente, con le
note dell’Aida risuonate in onore dei 200 anni dalla nascita
di Giuseppe Verdi e cantate da 50 giovani coristi trentini,
prima dell’accensione dell’innovativo tripode a LED – il
primo della storia totalmente ecologico - issato sulla Torre
Civica di Piazza Duomo a Trento, struttura dell’undicesimo
secolo che domina la piazza. Il tutto, nell’anno in cui cade
il 450° anniversario dalla chiusura del Concilio di Trento,
evento che ha segnato la storia della Chiesa cattolica e
che si è celebrato nell’attigua cattedrale.
Ad aprire la cerimonia è stato lo spettacolo di proiezioni e
musiche di Klaus Obermaier, coreografo del Teatro La Fenice di Venezia presente a Trento grazie all’accordo di collaborazione tra la IUAV di Venezia e l’Università di Trento.
Una suggestiva apertura che ha preceduto l’entrata della
bandiera italiana sulle note dell’Aida di Giuseppe Verdi,
nell’anno in cui ricade il 200° anniversario dalla sua nascita. L’anniversario è stato celebrato dall’esecuzione di 50
giovani tra i 18 e i 25 anni in rappresentanza di sedici corali
del Trentino, seguita dalla sfilata delle delegazioni provenienti da tutto il mondo, accompagnate da alcuni figuranti
travestiti da “Ciusi e Gobi” in una rievocazione storica della
disputa medioevale tra trentini e feltrini che viene celebrata
ogni anno a Trento il 26 giugno in occasione della festa
patronale di San Vigilio.
A seguire, è stata la volta dei discorsi ufficiali del presidente del Comitato organizzatore Sergio Anesi, del presidente
della Provincia autonoma di Trento Ugo Rossi e del presidente del Fisu Claude-Louis Gallien, che ha dichiarato
ufficialmente aperta la XXVI Winter Universiade Trentino
2013, prima dei giuramenti degli atleti e dei giudici, pronunciati da Deborah Sighel (atleta italiana del pattinaggio di
velocità) e da Guglielmo Bosca.
«Accogliendo l’invito della Fisu di subentrare in corsa ad
un’altra nazione - ha detto Anesi - il comitato organizzatore formato da Provincia Autonoma di Trento, Università di
Trento, Cusi e Comune di Trento, ha accettato di organizzare un evento complesso in poco più di un anno, sapendo

Duomo and which officially opened the 26th Winter Universiade 2013. Over 3,000 athletes from 61 countries attended
an amazing show which was mixing past and present and
paid tribute to the 200th anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi
through a choir of 50 youngsters from Trentino singing
Aida. The torch set on the top of Torre Civica was lighted
through an innovative LED system - making it the first ecofriendly torch in history. Trento also celebrates the 450th
anniversary of the closure of the Council of Trent, a key
historical event for the Catholic Church.
The choreograph of “La Fenice” theatre of Venice, Klaus
Obermaier, was the artistic director behind the amazing
projection and music performances, following an agreement between the University of Trento and the University of
Venice. The Italian national flag made its entrance, with the
Aida music resonating in honour of the 200th anniversary

Trentino la Provincia d’Italia più vicina al mondo dello sport:
la ampia dotazione di impianti sportivi e soprattutto la grande capacità organizzativa assicurata dai tanti comitati locali
e dalle migliaia di volontari».
«Abbiamo più punti di forza che ci fanno dire con orgoglio
di essere pronti ad accogliere questa competizione affascinante - ha aggiunto il presidente della Provincia Autonoma
di Trento Ugo Rossi - Il fattore umano, inteso come energia, competenze ed entusiasmo, quindi le infrastrutture, a
partire da Sanbapolis, la sede centrale dell’evento, e infine
il vero segreto del Trentino, ovvero l’autonomia speciale,
che è scuola di responsabilità e valorizza l’operosità delle
nostre genti».
Prima di dichiarare aperta la XXVI Winter Universiade
2013, il presidente della Fisu Gallien si è soffermato sullo
slogan dell’evento “Inspired by U”, “ispirati da voi”. «Voi
inteso come studenti, atleti, volontari, allenatori, giudici,
spettatori - ha detto Gallien -, voi professori, ricercatori e
studenti della innovativa Università di trento, voi popolazione della Provincia Autonoma di Trento che si è impegnata a trasformare questa manifestazione in un momento
indimenticabile».
Poi è arrivato il momento clou della cerimonia, ovvero
l’ingresso della torcia “la Genziana delle Alpi”, portata in
Piazza Duomo da sei tedofori d’élite, ovvero i campioni
olimpici Franco Nones (30 km di sci di fondo a Grenoble

Dopo essersi alternati nell’ultimo tratto della lunghissima
Torch Relay, scattata da Roma il 6 novembre con l’accensione da parte di Papa Francesco, i sei campioni trentini
hanno marciato assieme, disponendosi a triangolo ai piedi
della Torre Civica, da dove l’olimpionico di Grenoble Franco Nones ha acceso il tripode, con un fascio di luce che è
salito fino alla sommità della torre ed ha acceso il braciere,
il primo di sempre a LED e quindi ad emissioni zero, in
nome di un evento destinato a lasciare il segno anche sotto
il profilo della ecosostenibilità.
Il nuovo che incontra il passato, l’innovazione che incontra
la tradizione, i giovani atleti delle Universiadi Trentino 2013
che incontrano la storia del Trentino, pronti a loro volta a
scriverne una importante pagina.

President of the Organizing Committee Sergio Anesi, the
President of the Autonomous Province of Trento Ugo Rossi,

Sighel from the Italian Speed Skating team and Guglielmo
Bosca recited the oaths of athletes and referees.
« By embracing the invitation from the FISU to organize this
Winter Universiade’s edition at the place of another country – said Anesi – the organizing committee took up a great
challenge. We had only one year, but we could rely on two
features that have converted Trentino into the Italian province the keenest on sport: the numerous sports facilities and,
above all, the big organizing capacity of the different local
committees and the thousands of volunteers. »
Ugo Rossi added: « We can be ready to experience this fascinating event thanks to other strong points like the human
factor (energy, competences and enthusiasm), facilities
like our headquarters Sanbapolis, and the cosiest secret of
Trentino: our special autonomy that teaches us the meaning of responsibility. »
Before declaring the official opening of the 26th Winter
Universiade Trentino 2013, FISU President Gallien explained the slogan “Inspired by U”. «You are students, athletes,
volunteers, coaches, referees, spectators. You are professors, researchers and students of the innovative University
of Trento. You are the people of the Autonomous Province
of Trento who have worked hard to turn this event into an
unforgettable moment. »
Then came the key moment of the ceremony: the procession of the Gentian of the Alps held by the Olympic champions Franco Nones, Giorgio Vanzetta, Matteo Anesi and
Cristian Zorzi, as well as the ski champions Igor Cigolla and
Gianluca Grigoletto.
After the long Torch Relay which begun in Rome on November 6th - when Pope Franciscus I lit the Gentian, the
six champions from Trentino marched together and composed a triangle at the bottom of Torre Civica. There, the
Olympic champion Franco Nones lighted the tripod: the
light reached the top of the tower and “inflamed” the first
LED zero-emission cauldron ever seen, highlighting the
event’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
Modernity meets the past, innovation meets tradition, the
young athletes of the Universiade meet the history of Trentino, now up to them ready to write a new chapter.

risposte, opportunità per parlare dell’ottimo lavoro che il
Comitato Organizzatore è riuscito a fare in davvero breve
tempo, in meno di un anno. «Qui, e solamente qui, era
possibile riuscire ad organizzare Universiadi nel giro di
pochi mesi», ha poi aggiunto Gallien. «In Trentino ci sono
le montagne, gli impianti sportivi, persone che si intendono
di organizzazione», ha sottolineato Anesi, prima di ricordare anche la cooperazione con la FISU, il CONI ed il CUSI e
di soffermarsi ancora una volta sul fatto che «le Universiadi
non sono solamente sport, ma molto di più, e rappresentano un’occasione per le conferenze internazionali scientifiche e di medicina». Universiade, Università, Universalità:
nelle prossime due settimane, il Trentino sarà tutto ciò.
The final countdown to the 26th Winter Universiade got
underway on Tuesday 10th following the official FISU
launch press conference at Sanbapolis. It’s just one day left
before the Opening Ceremony, and after months of hard
work, Trentino is ready to stage a wonderful event to all the
participants.
“I’m glad to be in Trentino and back in Italy for another Universiade” FISU President Claude-Louis Gallien said. “We
were confident that Trentino would take up the challenge
even though they had only one year and half of preparations instead of the six years usually granted to an Organizing Committee. We could rely upon to the full cooperation
of CUSI, the organizers’ experience and knowledge in
hosting great sports events, the presence of high-quality
sports and lodging facilities and the wonderful frame of the
Dolomites to lead to a successful event.”
“I am proud of the work carried out by the Organizing Committee and the close cooperation with FISU, its Council and
all its staff,” Winter Universiade Trentino 2013 Organizing
Committee President Sergio Anesi said. “Regardless of the
success which is yet to come, the Organizing Committee is
already satisfied to not only having been able to organize
this global sports event, but also to have deeply worked
with the University of Trento and organize scientific events
in parallel.”
There are approximately 6,ooo accredited people, amongst
which 2,700 student-athletes representing a total number
of about 800 universities. The Winter Universiade Trentino
2013 will be the largest multidisciplinary winter sports event
ever organized in the Trentino region and the largest winter
sports event of 2013 at global level.
”The Universiade is not only about sports, it is the result
of the combination of sports, culture, education, research,
environmental sustainability and health. And a further
enriching touch was added by Trentino: innovation,” FISU
President Gallien explained in reference with the international conference on sports and innovation, held in Rovereto
since yesterday. He also outlined the key role played by
environmental sustainability in the organization of Trentino
2013 and the importance of protecting the fragile mountain
ecosystem.

Un evento di questa portata richiede un enorme sforzo organizzativo che, per essere soddisfatto, necessità ad ogni
edizione del supporto di migliaia di volontari che contribuiscano alla sua realizzazione e che rappresentano il motore
del movimento sportivo, la sua spina dorsale.
Senza il loro apporto difficilmente una manifestazione del
genere sarebbe attuabile. È infatti riconosciuto anche dagli
addetti ai lavori che è il “volontario” il vero protagonista nelle grandi manifestazioni: la pura incarnazione dello spirito
olimpico e dei valori di cui lo sport sa essere veicolo.
Tutti possono fare i volontari dello sport, non ci sono vincoli
di età o di nazionalità.
In occasione dell’Universiade trentina sono circa 2.000 I
volontari, che andranno a formare una squadra variegata in
grado di svolgere diverse mansioni.
Le motivazioni che spingono a fare il volontario durante
una manifestazione di questo tipo sono molteplici: la passione, la voglia di essere partecipi di un momento storico,
la possibilità di vivere le emozioni di fianco a grandi atleti,
la voglia di mettersi alla prova e di sentirsi utili, la possibilità di incontrare persone di tutte le nazionalità e di parlare
diverse lingue straniere.

An event of this size makes enormous organisational
demands, requiring the support of thousands of volunteers each year. These volunteers contribute towards the
success of the event and represent the driving force of
the sports movement, its backbone, because without their
assistance an event of this kind would be difficult to put into
practice. It is indeed recognised by those in the field that
“volunteer service” is the true protagonist at major events: it
represents the essence of the Olympic spirit and the values
promoted through sport. Anyone can be a volunteer in the
field of sport, there are no limitations in terms of age or
nationality.
There are around 2,000 volunteers for the Universiade in
Trentino, making up a variegated team capable of carrying
out different tasks.
There are a number of reasons driving people to volunteer
during an event of this kind: passion for sport, the desire to
participate in a historic occasion, the chance to experience
the excitement, alongside great athletes, the desire to try
something new and feel
Useful, the chance to meet people of different nationalities
and speak different foreign languages.

Erzurum?
The 25th edition of the Winter Universiade put Turkey on
the map of the international sporting scene, shaping the
Eastern Anatolian city of Erzurum as the largest winter
sports resort in the area.
The Winter Universiade Erzurum 2011 is remembered for
the stunning opening ceremony the Turkish put on in front
of a sold-out crowd at the city’s 17,400-seat capacity Cemal
Gürsel Stadium. But also for the incredible atmosphere of
its athletes’ village: erected on the Ataturk University campus, it helped to enhance the spirit of the Universiade as
a blending and exchange of cultures. Lots of investments
were done for the construction of modern sports facilities
and infrastructures, which provided not only the perfect
conditions for all the competitors, but also left a great
legacy. Some athletes won a gold medal more than once,
others were simply happy to be there, but all enjoyed being
part of this unique event!
A record 52 countries took part in the 11-day event, with
Malaysia and Venezuela making their debut, bringing the
total number of participating countries to a Winter Universiade to 78.
Russia was the most successful nation, also the largest
delegation, with an overall total of 39 medals including 14
gold medals. Korea finished runners-up with seven titles,
and Kazakhstan completed the medal podium with six gold.
In total, 25 countries left Erzurum with at least one medal.

Nel 1959 il Centro Universitario Sportivo Italiano (CUSI)
organizzò un evento sportivo che portò a Torino 1400 atleti
da ben 43 paesi, questo evento era l’Universiade. Era la
prima volta che si associava al termine “Olimpiade” la parola “Università”. Gli organizzatori crearono una bandiera con
una “U” circondata da stelle, che avrebbe da quel momento
iniziato il suo giro per il mondo. Nacque anche l’inno ufficiale della FISU, il “Gaudeamus Igitur” che sostituì gli inni
nazionali durante le premiazioni delle medaglie.
La prima edizione delle Universiadi invernali si tenne nel
1960 a Chamonix, Francia.
…più volte ospitata in Italia
È la sesta volta che l’Italia apre le porte all’Universiade invernale dopo cinque soddisfacenti edizioni tenute a Sestriere (1966), Livigno (1957), Belluno (1985), Tarvisio (2003) e
Torino (2007). L’Italia ha ospitato anche l’Universiade estiva
per ben tre volte (a Torino nel 1959 e nel 1979 e in Sicilia
nel 1997).
Emblematiche sono le parole del presidente della FISU
Claude-Louis Gallien che, in occasione della conferenza
di lancio del 10 dicembre, ha dichiarato di essere molto
contento del ritorno dell’Universiade in Italia.
Ed eccoci in Trentino, per un’Universiade ancora
più straordinaria!
In 1959, CUSI, the Italian Student Sports Association,
organized an international student sport event in Turin,
which brought together 43 countries and 1,400 participants,
under the name ‘Universiade’. This was the first time the
term combining the words ‘University’ and ‘Olympiad’ was
used. The organizers created a flag with a ‘U’ surrounded
by stars, which was to begin its journey around the world.
They also replaced the national anthems at the medalawarding ceremonies with the traditional academic song
“Gaudeamus Igitur”, which would become the FISU’s
official anthem.
The first edition of the Winter Universiade was held in Chamonix, France in 1960.
… Many times celebrated in Italy
It’s the sixth time that Italy will stage the Winter Universiade
after five successful editions in Sestriere (1966), Livigno
(1975), Belluno (1985), Tarvisio (2003) and Turin (2007). It
also hosted three summer editions (in Turin in 1959 and
1979 and in Sicily in 1997).

participants from over 50 countries will take centre stage
over 11 days of competition in 12 different sports (alpine
skiing, biathlon, nordic skiing, ski jumping, curling, figure
skating, freestyle skiing, ice hockey, short track, snowboarding, speed skating).

action at the Winter Universiade Trentino 2013 through extensive television broadcast coverage of the largest global
event for student athletes and second only to the Winter
Olympics overall.
Eurosport will provide cutting edge technology to bring the
experience of Trentino to the living rooms of millions around
the world while RAI will also offer extensive live feeds
throughout the event. With 150 hours of live broadcast and
further coverage on FISU Live TV channel (www.livefisu.tv),
the Winter Universiade Trentino 2013 is set to be the most
most comprehensively covered Winter Universiade in the
event’s history.
The global audience for the Universiade has been given an
extra boost with FISU providing an exclusive digital access
to daily highlights every evening to TV networks worldwide.
From Europe to Asia, from Russia to China, to South Korea
and USA, winter sports fans will be able to enjoy 11 actionpacked days of wall-to-wall coverage showing the world’s
top student-athletes, some of them set to compete in Sochi

Moreover, approximately 250 accredited journalists have
swarmed into Trento to cover the event. They will be reporting from the Main Press Centre in Sanbapolis and from the
different venues, promising media coverage on an unprecedented scale and a record-breaking use of social media.
La Gazzetta dello Sport, Italy’s biggest sports newspaper,
is setting a good example with full pages dedicated to the
Winter Universiade. And on Facebook, WUTrentino2013
has already reached almost 8,500 likes.
With 57 days remaining to the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games,
no doubt the Winter Universiade Trentino 2013 will act as
a testing ground for some athletes in the build up to next
year’s major sport event.
The Universiade is now the second largest international
sporting event behind the Olympics in terms of number
of participating athletes and countries represented, and
gives its elite contestants a golden opportunity to compete
against world-class opposition. With over 2,500 participants
from around the world, this exceptional sports event provides an ideal environment to prepare athletes for the stage
of an Olympics, through the experience gained both on and
off the sporting field.
The Universiade is playing a great role in guiding rising
young talents along the pathway from elite student level
to Olympic medal success. Many Olympic champions
achieved their first taste for victory on the global stage at
a Universiade as for instance the French skier Jean-Pierre
Vidal who won the 1999 Winter Universiade before being
crowned Olympic champion in slalom at the 2002 Salt Lake
City Olympics.
Here in Trentino many future Sochi Olympians will be in
action.
For instance, Team GB’s curling women will feature young
talent Lauren Gray who has recently been confirmed as
curling alternate for Sochi. She is taking part in her second
consecutive Winter Universiade after winning gold in Erzurum in 2011.

The Ice Rink of Trento will welcome three short track speed
skaters from Hungary, Viktor Knoch, Bence Beres and Bernadett Heidum, who will also be defending their chances
at the Olympics in a few months. So will be the 21-year old
South Korean Noh Jin-Kyu.
Several student-athletes from the Italian squad are also
warming-up for Sochi such as snowboarder Aaron March,
short track relay speed skater Edoardo Reggiani, figure
skater Valentina Marchei and speed skater Mirko Nenzi
amongst others.
Double Olympic champion and multiple world champion
Martina Sáblíková from Czech Republic will be not only a
hot favourite in the long distance races in speed skating in
Baselga di Piné, but definitely at the Adler-Arena Skating
Centre in Sochi as well.
German snowboarders Selina Jörg and Anke Karstens who
finished fourth and fifth respectively in Vancouver in 2010
will use the Universiade as a training in their preparations
to the Games.

Here is the legacy of Trentino
2013: the creation of an
international centre
for innovation in sports
Great sports events are a driving force for the development of the areas where they are held: this is the message
outflowing from the international conference on sports and
innovation, held in Rovereto on December 9th and 10th
on the eve of the Winter Universiade Trentino 2013. Close
but fair competition, team spirit, focus on merit: in this way,
sports is a source of inspiration for universities. Mr Paleari,
President of the Italian Association of Rectors declared:
“Sports is a challenge for Italian universities and the Universiade will show how close these two contexts are.”
Sport speaks an universal language. It plays a social and
economic role. It can be a source of inspiration for research and an impulse for innovation, with an interdisciplinary
approach and an orientation towards technological transfer. These are the strongholds of the declaration of intent
signed yesterday at the end of the conference “University
Sport: Inspiring Innovation”, promoted by the University
of Trento and FISU, in Rovereto, on the eve of the Winter
Universiade. The representatives of the universities, business and sports stakeholders should pursue the promotion
of sports as a pole of attraction for development, in line with
the recommendations of the European funding programme
for research Horizon 2020.
Among the others, the first representatives to sign the
declaration were Stefano Paleari, President of CRUI - the
Association of Italian Rectors; Claude-Louis Gallien, FISU
President; Giovanni Panebianco, Director of the Office for
Sports of the Presidency of the Italian Council of Ministers;
Giovanni Malagò, CONI President; Leonardo Coiana, CUSIO President; Daria de Pretis, Rector of the University of
Trento and Innocenzo Cipolletta, President of the University
of Trento and President of the Committee of Honour of the
Universiade.
The document will be the starting point to activate a dedicated working group and a series of initiatives to disseminate
the new cooperation between sports and university. A kind
of virtuous lobby born in Rovereto and in Italy, capable then
to spread at international level. The declaration engages
the signatories on two main levels: On one hand, it will
foster the relationship with the industrial and business sectors; On the other hand, at academic level, universities will
be called upon to promote double degree programmes for
young students-athletes and take the cue from sports and
the associated set of values as efficient tools for education
and a source for innovative research.
The declaration also called upon public authorities to recognize sports as an useful tool to face some of the great
social challenges of the 21st century: the ageing of the
population, obesity, immigration, poverty and environmental
sustainability. An international panel of academic, political,
sports and business experts will be created within three
months. It will be coordinated by FISU and include in its
working programme the organization of another international conference on university and sports in regards with innovation. Afterwards, an international centre for innovation
through sports will be created. It will be located in Trentino
and coordinated by the University of Trento and FISU, in
cooperation with the European Institute of Technology.
“This is the first milestone of an ambitious research project,
and part of the longer term sporting legacy of the Winter
Universiade. The University of Trento is proud to work hand
in hand with FISU to bring university sport to another level“,

Honours
for Canada
Canada is amongst the largest delegations present here in
Trentino. A record 149 Canadians, including 107 studentathletes, have traveled to Italy to compete at the 26th
Winter Universiade.
The red and white contingent, along with its Chef de mission Gord Grace, was officially welcomed by Mrs Jessica
Blitt, Counsellor, Public Affairs and Advocacy at the Embassy of Canada in Italy, at a reception held at the Grand Hotel
Trento on Monday, December 9th afternoon. A number of
Italian officials also attended the event, including representatives from the Autonomous Province of Trento and the
University of Trento.
It was also the occasion for Team Canada to name its
flag bearer for the Opening Ceremony. The 21-year-old
Brendan Bottcher, considered among the rising stars of
Canadian curling ever since he won the 2012 Junior World
Championships in Ostersund, Sweden, is the lucky one.
“It’s a pretty big deal for me. You always see the flag bearer
as the leader of the team, and this is the first competition
I’ve been at where the team is so large,” Bottcher said. “I’ve
played at world championships, national championships
where your team is quite small and here I’m representing a
much larger group. I’m really proud to be doing that for the
country at these Games.”
“Brendan is a great representative of our Canadian student-athletes. He is a class act both on and off the ice,”
added Grace. “He is an academic and athletic all-Canadian
and will no doubt carry the flag proudly in Trentino and be a
true ambassador at these Games.”

ufficiali, quali le discipline, il medagliere e le classifiche.
Gli utenti potranno poi fruire in tempo reale il territorio
trentino: ad esempio, inserendo il punto di partenza, la
destinazione e la tipologia di mezzi di trasporto da utilizzare
(es. bus) si potrà ottenere una lista delle possibili soluzioni
di percorso.
Il progetto “La Scheda Atleta” è curato da Trento Rise e
prevede di creare uno spazio online dedicato ai protagonisti della prossima Universiade Trentino 2013.L’obiettivo è
creare, attraverso i social network, uno strumento di comunicazione per gli sportivi che faciliti e stimoli la conoscenza,
la comunicazione e la socializzazione.
La App dei “Volontari” è sviluppata per dispositivi Android
da Smart Campus, un progetto strategico per Trento Rise.
Punta a fornire informazioni utili sull’Universiade (luoghi,
eventi, etc.) e a migliorare il contributo dei volontari sia in
termini di organizzazione che di comunicazione (sia interna
tra volontari sia tra volontari e organizzatori).
Grazie ad un portale e ad una App installabile gratuitamente le persone disabili che potranno trovare tutte le
informazioni relative all’accessibilità di strutture pubbliche,
commerciali, campi gara, filtrate a seconda della posizione
geografica e del tipo di disabilità attraverso la App “Trentino accessibile”. Ad oggi le strutture catalogate dal sistema
sono oltre 1.500 e in questi mesi prosegue la mappature di
altre 250 strutture coinvolte nel programma della prossima
Universiade.
Four applications have been especially realised by companies from the Trentino ICT sector to guarantee the 26th
Winter Universiade visibility stretching beyond frontiers.
This communication activity is joined by the web site www.
universiadetrentino.org, which offers content in Italian and
English, designed to guarantee easy access and information for internauts interested in learning more about the 78
competitions and the dozens of associated events included
in the calendar of Trentino 2013.
The official Trentino 2013 app offers news and information
about the 26th Universiade.
It has been created by the consortium of ICT companies
in Trentino (Conit). The application for iOS and Android
systems will act as a vehicle for official information, such as
sports disciplines, medal tables and classifications.
Users will also be able to obtain real time info. on the Trentino area: for example, by entering the point of departure,
destination and type of transport to be used (e.g. bus) a list
of possible routes can be obtained.
The Athlete’s app has been developed by Trento Rise and
is designed to create an online space dedicated to the
protagonists at the next 2013 Winter Universiade in Trentino. The objective is to offer a communications tool for
sportspeople, through the social networks, facilitating and
stimulating knowledge, communication and socialising.
The Volunteer app has been developed for Android devices by Smart Campus, a strategic project for Trento Rise.
It aims to provide useful information about the Universiade (venues, events etc.) and to improve the volunteers’
contribution, in both organisational and communications
terms (both among volunteers and between volunteers and
organisers).
Thanks to a portal and app that can be installed free of
charge, disabled people will be able to find out about the
accessibility of public and commercial facilities and competition venues, filtered according to the geographical position
and type of disability, through the “Accessible Trentino”
app. To date more than 1,500 facilities have been catalogued by the system and mapping of a further 250 facilities
involved in the programme of the forthcoming Universiade
is continuing.
