OCTOBER

Chairman’s Message
Don Gatheman
Fall is once again upon us. For me, the All British Car Show brings about mixed feelings. The show this year was great! I heard many comments from out of town guests
who love the Saturday vs. Sunday choice, so I think we can call that decision a successful one. The weather forecast for the day wasn’t great, but the actual weather was certainly wonderful for a show. I felt a few sprinkles late morning, but that was all. While
we had a challenge with the grass on the show field not being cut, it seems like most
people understood and soldiered on. All in all, it was great fun and accomplished what
I think car shows are all about- meeting up with old friends, and making new ones.
As for the “mixed feelings” part, since our show is in September, it signals the way for
the end of another summer. Cool weather is around the corner, followed by the menace cold, wet, snowy abomination called winter. I guess you can tell I don’t like cold
weather! And no, I’m not suggesting we change the month of our show. I just think as
I pack up the car to leave the show that it’s the last formal outing for the year. I’ll patiently wait until spring, when flowers bloom and
birds sing, to start enjoying showing the cars again.
I also reflect on what I’ve planned, and accomplished
on the cars this summer. Of course, the plan on the
GT was to make it at least presentable, and I’m still
hoping to get that accomplished before old man winter sets in. But I also had big dreams for the Midget.
It needs springs and a repair on the driver’s seat. Not
major jobs by any means, and certainly do-able over
a six month or so time period. Well, the replacement
springs are sitting in my garage, and the seat repair is
as close to done as removing the seat and bringing it
to the upholsterer. As a matter of fact, the seat’s been
in the same situation since I bought the car. This
spring I brought it back in for a revised estimate- it
went from 65.00 to 70.00, not bad for a seven year

span of time. Well, there’s always next year.
I also remember my friend Terry Fanning. Terry and I
would usually walk around two shows together - the
ABCS, of course, and the Easter car show. I guess I
would start and end the season with him, sharing stories
and looking at cars. He was a great source of knowledge, and like other people in the club, always eager to
share what he knew with others. One thing I’ll always
remember about those shows was Terry’s disdain for
people who trailer their cars to shows and never drive
them. He referred to them as “full scale models”, and
like many of us felt the joy of having a car is driving it.

tric cars from taking over the world, nor can we increase
world gas supplies. We might, however, spark interest
in younger people and get them involved in our hobby.
So the next time you’re at a car show, at work, dinner, or
anywhere else with your car and a young person makes a
comment, invite them to look closer and even have a
seat inside. We need their interest for the future.
Don’t forget to attend our October meeting if you can, as
it’s election time! Thank you all for a great year being
your Chairman. Drive safely, Don.
Sometimes I wonder what our MG hobby will look like
in 50 years. Many of us will be gone from the scene.
Will the cars be gone from a lack of interest, or maybe
from the shortage of oil? We can’t stop hybrids or elec-

Head Questions—try flowspeed.com
By Simon Dix
Well, as some of you may know I try to read the posts on
www.mgexperience.net and it is a great source of information. Recently there was a discussion relating to porting and polishing a head which interested me because
I’m going to need to replace the cam shaft on my 1972
MGB.
As part of the online “discussion” the work of Sean
Brown was mentioned along with his web site
www.flowspeed.com. I looked at this web site and found
a wealth of information. One of the most helpful pieces
of information is the section “MGB cylinder head crack
identification article” which helps you quickly identify
whether you have a cracked head in the “usual places”.
In addition to this there is the “Identifying MGB Cylinder Heads” article which will help you identify what you
have. Given the mostly interchangeable nature of the Bseries heads this might solve some questions for you.
Last of all there’s details and information on Sean’s
porting and polishing services. Check out this great site!

To the members of my new club, I am writing you after
my first roadside trauma exercise on my "new" '69 B.
tor, points, and inside of the cap, put it all back together,
held my breath, turned the key.....and alive she came.
After sputtering around a curve on my way home at rush
hour from the office Wednesday, she stopped running at
the precise moment that the light turned green with 20
impatient drivers behind me. The nice chap behind me
asked me if I needed help pushing her to the side,
just as some yahoo in a 5 series almost took my leg off
while squeezing between me and the curb. After getting
the car to the side (I got lucky, I was next to a service
station on the corner) I saw a small spattering of antifreeze on the ground before me.
As I was pulling out of the gas station, some yahoo in a 5
series almost took off my entire front clip, good thing I
have those drum brakes in back!
I was looking at the temp gauge when she was sputtering, and it was fine. I checked all the hoses, and although almost glowing red at 1200 degrees, none
showed any signs of wear or cracking. In lieu of scratching my head, I speed-dialed this great mechanic I know
at Fee Fee and Olive. I described the green water all
over the distributor and starter and Rick asked, "is there
anything coming out of the heater water valve"? Not
knowing what the heck that was, and not wanting to
sound like an amateur, I responded "No". So he told me
to dry out the inside of the dizzy cap and get home, if
not, I was calling the other speed-dial, AAA.
I cranked it again...she wouldn't start. After going back
and forth over all the possibilities, I pulled the rotor out
of my pocket...I had forgotten to re-install it. I must've
caused some stir in the cooling system though, because
there before my eyes was a drip...right on the distributor
cap. I FOUND THE HEATER WATER VALVE!
Having a towel beside me (I usually used it to wipe the
condensation off the windshield because I haven't yet
figured out how to use the defroster) I tore a piece off
and wrapped it around the valve, as I was walking into
the service station to see if I could find a rubber band or
piece of string to tie around it, I found a baggie. The
great guy inside the station sold me 2 zip ties for two
bits. So I put the baggie around the towel and zip tied it
tight around the mass of terry cloth and plastic before
me. I used the remainder of the towel to dry out the ro-
My first minor surgery putting it all back together
should be the fun part, I had it over-nighted so that I can
join in the "It don't add up" rally on Sunday.....Nevertheless to say, I am now intimately knowledgeable on the inner-workings of the MG heater water
valve.
Cheers!
Not Alan’s engine bay but for anyone else looking for the
elusive heater water valve, here it is.
Epilogue: Well Alan made the repair OK as he did indeed make it to the “It Don’t Add Up Rally”. When installing the new valve a tip I heard/read was to work
with the lower bolt first. Allow the valve to hang down
from the lower bolt, 180 degrees from it’s final position.
This will give you more room to work with that bolt.
When it’s almost completely tight rotate the valve into
position and tighten the upper bolt. This will leave you
with minimal turns needed on the very awkward to
reach lower bolt of the water heater valve. Good luck!

Kansas City Here We Come
(or went in this case) by Kathy Kresser
The SLTOA members should remember the Kansas City
All British Car Show is held on Labor Day weekend. Chris and I joined a band of MG enthusiasts along
with John Lamberg for the show this year which showcased over 100 British cars.
As expected, the MG people made a day of the drive to
KC. They departed about 9:00 a.m. and drove Highway
94 connecting with Highway 50. It was long and the
participants were hot and tired by the time they arrived. John Lamberg propelled his Spitfire down Highway 70 well above the speed limit with the briefest of
stops in Columbia. Now, the Kresser’s opted for the
easiest approach; we trailered the TR3! Everyone enjoyed a fun evening dining together.
A good showing for St. Louis participants

The KC show includes a Saturday afternoon self-guided
drive with the show on Sunday on a grassy lot adjacent
to the hotel. The St. Louis cars displayed a poster in remembrance of Ken Biermann, a long time MG club
member who died in August 2008. The six St. Louis
cars took home four trophies – not bad for the local
folks. Hope to see you there in 2009.

Friday evening started the festivities of the weekend
with a barnburner of a BBQ sponsored by the MG Doc,
John Mangles and his wife, Carol. British sports cars
filled the parking spaces on the back lot, the smoke
spewed from the grill and laughter was everywhere
when a parade of British cars rolled in from Iowa.
Breaking with tradition, the show took place on Saturday and busy workers were scampering around readying
the show field and the Triumph members were busy preparing the concession stand.

Several people wanted to vote for the lonely lawnmower.

Alas it did not have a class and there were no write-ins.
Owners, visitors, friends, and onlookers toured the field,
chatted with each other and enjoyed a wonderful car
show. When the votes were tallied, the awards were announced and the field was empty once again at the end
of the day.

The festivities had not yet ended. Several out-of-town
guests asked and received recommendations for restaurants and enjoyed their Saturday night dinners in St.
Louis. A continental breakfast gathering at the host hotel was well received by many and provided the staging
area for the First Annual St. Louis British Car Show
Post-Show Sunday Drive. The drive headed west to St.
Charles County and ended with lunch in Chesterfield
Valley. Kudos to Robert Rushing for a well planned
drive.
A round of applause goes out to the MG Club for organizing the event, the Triumph club for operating the
concession stand and most of all, to all the British car
clubs and LBC owners for participating and making the
St. Louis show a success!

Many of my readers may recall I like posing a question to the participants of the St. Louis British Car Show. The responses are interesting, surprising and always fun to gather. This year, I wondered if the car owners stayed with their
car preferences from an earlier time in their life (18-24 years of age) vs. now. Here are the results: (If I misstated car
information, it was purely accidental).
