THEODORE ROBINS FORD CELEBRATES 90TH ANNIVERSARY
This June, Theodore Robins Ford celebrates their 90 year anniversary. To celebrate this
milestone, the dealership will be holding events throughout the entire month for everyone
in the community, including a “kick off” party on Saturday, June 11, 2011. There will be
food, music, giveaways and $90 cars for sale!
The Theodore Robins legacy all started back in 1921 when Theodore Robins Sr. opened
his Bay Avenue service garage on the Balboa peninsula for a mere $15 per month. He
made sure “to offer good service and treat his employees well,” Theodore “Bob” Robins
Jr., the founder’s son, said about his father. “Maybe it was not as structured as things are
today. But that was basically the principles he followed for all those many years and that
are still practiced today.”
In early February 1923, two men walked into the repair shop with an offer to purchase it,
saying a Ford dealership had opened up. On February 7, Robins Sr. hopped into a Model
T and headed up to Los Angeles, where he promptly signed an exclusive deal with Ford. It was a golden opportunity that Robins Sr. knew he couldn’t
pass up. Theodore Robins Ford sold their first Ford for $637.10. Several years later, Robins Jr. began working in his father’s dealership, ferrying parts to
garages all over town. He even secured a driver’s license at 14 years old so he could get behind the wheel of the parts delivery truck. In his current office,
which he took over from his father, he still keeps the original 1923 Ford Franchise Agreement framed on the wall. Next to it hangs Theodore Robins’ first
car sale on February 14, 1923 -- a week after he’d opened the Ford franchise.
Through the years, the dealership has expanded several times. In 1928, Robins Sr. moved the dealership to a building at 22nd Street and Central Avenue,
which is now Balboa Boulevard. The dealership was across the street from a Bank of America, which has since been replaced by the Crab Cooker
restaurant. In 1955, Robins moved the dealership again, this time to Pacific Coast Highway. In 1966, Robins was ready to expand again; he pulled up
stakes and headed to his current location, at Harbor Boulevard and Bay Street. “He’s an institution here in town,” said Ed Fawcett, president of the Costa
Mesa Chamber of Commerce. “They’ve been an anchor over there forever.”
Robins Jr. is still selling cars and trucks at his Costa Mesa dealership. They are one of the oldest family owned and operated Ford dealerships in America.
“We’ve been selling them almost as long as they’ve been building them,” Robins said from the office of a dealership now essentially run by sons Jim
and Dave. Theodore Robins Ford has been family owned and operated for four generations with three of Robins’ grand-children now employed at the
dealership.
Throughout the years, the Robins family has been active in the community. For many years, the Robins family generously supported the Fish Fry. In the
late 1970s, the Newport-Mesa Unified School District named their auditorium Robins Hall.
Congratulations to Theodore Robins Ford on 90 successful years of service!

RIBBON CUTTINGS
Cristina Sandoval and John DiFerdinando happily cut the ribbon at their
store’s recent Chamber ribbon cutting. They were flanked on left by
Chamber Ambassadors Dean Anderson, GrowthSpurt; Ryan O’Donnell,
Universal Waste; Janie Harris, Newport Mesa Lions; and on right by Jane
Jensen, Move Masters and Dennis Gutierrez, NuVisions Federal Credit Union.
Front row: Margie Do, Happy Photo; Eric Anderson, A Second Look; Steve
Mensinger; city councilperson, Janie Harris, Newport Mesa Lions; Union
Bank’s Kristina Henderson-and Irma Castaneda, branch manager (holding
scissors); Arlene Schafer, past mayor; Wendy Leece, city council person;
Jane Jensen, Move Masters; Art Alderete, Weichman Realty.
John and Cristina treated us to their “excruciatingly” fresh and delicious
burgers and fries. They even treated us to some champagne from the
ceremonial cork popping! Make it a point to visit them soon – you too will
be hooked. If you need further enticement, Nordstrom Rack and Edwards
Theater are in close proximity. Fun fact: John told us that his uncle who
started the franchise originally sold only fries and cokes in a mall! His fries
were such a hit that they built an entire menu around them! BOARDWALK

featuring food from fellow Chamber members: Newport Rib Co, Nothing
Bundt Cakes and Edible Arrangements, plus raffle prizes. Estancia high
school even sent over a team of students to help out with check-in. The
well-attended reception featured presentations to the bank by local elected
representatives and Union Bank awarded a donation to the Costa Mesa
Kiwanis Club.
Les Miller 32nd Annual Student Awards Breakfast
32 years ago, Hank Panian (center) retired OCC professor, historian and
published author along with then OCC President Bob Moore and community
activist “Shorty” Schafer established the scholarship program and named it
in honor of Costa Mesa High School principal and “educator extraordinaire”
Les Miller. The Les Miller Student Awards program was established to honor
high achieving students from Costa Mesa’s high schools and colleges. Now
get this: Hank Panian has been attended and helped present the awards at
EVERY SINGLE one of the breakfasts! Also shown here (at right) Chamber
Board Chair, Larry Weichman presenting one of the students with her award.
PAGE 4
Worth noting, while there were many inspiring stories and presentations at
the awards breakfast this one stood out …
Back Bay Alternative Education High School’s Counselor Annie Younglove
proudly presented awards to students Ryan Jenkins and Catherine
Ferrara (right) w/mother at the breakfast. Back Bay High School is special
in many ways; one of them is for helping transform at risk students into
successful college bound graduates! The entire audience was near tears
when Ms. Younglove related how these two students had overcame their
circumstances while attending Back Bay High School. Ryan Jenkins was
accepted by several colleges and chose to attend UC San Francisco with a
full scholarship! Catherine Ferrara will be attending OCC transferring to San
Diego State’s veterinary program!

Costa Mesa quarterly sales tax
revenue up 10.7% over previous year
COSTA MESA, CALIF.—Costa Mesa’s sales tax revenue
from October through December was 10.7% higher
than the same quarter the previous year, with actual sales up 9.2% when
reporting aberrations were factored out.
The sales tax revenue increase for the County of Orange and State of
California was 6.0% and 6.8% respectively.
HdL, the City’s sales tax consultant, has estimated sales tax revenues
for the 2010-2011 fiscal year to be $29.4 million. In January, City staff
provided a mid-year update that projected sales tax revenue for this year
to be $29.2 million. The original 2010-2011 budget had estimated $26.3
million in sales tax revenue.
In January, the increased revenues—estimated to be about $4.5 million
(the figure also includes gains in what’s called “Sales Tax In-Lieu”—had
already been factored in to reduce this year’s budget gap, which currently
stands at about $1.6 million.

BULLETIN BYTES
National Children’s Day
and Summer Driving
Summer is here and school is out! One of the most
favorite times of the year for children is summer break.
In recognition of National Children’s Day on June
12, 2011, the California Department of Motor Vehicles would like to offer
summer driving safety tips, with California’s youngest residents in mind.
Whether your family is planning a road trip, or simply taking advantage
of the warmer weather to play outside this summer, drivers should take
heed of a few simple precautions to keep both passengers and pedestrians
out of harm’s way. Consider the following vehicle occupant and
pedestrian safety tips to ensure kids of all ages are safe all season long:
riding a bicycle. According to the Children’s Safety Network, children
and young people are the most affected age group of bicycle injuries
and deaths and 63 percent of bicycle fatalities are the result of head
injuries. Installing lights and reflectors on the bicycle and teaching
the importance of safe bicycle riding, including the use of a helmet, can
significantly reduce these accidents. After all, it is required by California
state law that all children under 18 wear a helmet while riding a bicycle.
Parents are not only responsible for adhering to vehicle safety rules, but
should also ensure their children are aware and following these helpful
tips as well. With National Children’s Day upon us, remember to keep
these tips in mind while driving for a safe and enjoyable summer. For
more information on driver and pedestrian safety, please visit DMV.ca.gov.
Follow the 25 MPH Neighborhood Speed Limit
Drivers should be aware of their speed and surroundings when driving
through neighborhoods and adhere to the 25 mph speed limit. Children
can suddenly run into the street to chase a ball or to catch up with a
friend; if drivers are going too fast to make a quick stop, it could lead
to an unwanted injury. It is also important to come to a complete stop
when at a red light or stop sign. According to the U.S. Department of
Transportation, there are approximately 5,000 to 6,000 pedestrian deaths
each year, with children making up a large portion of the victims involved.
Practice Proper Seat Belt Safety
Taking a summer trip? Whether you are traveling out of state or just
across town, it is important to follow the recommended guidelines for
seatbelt safety. Infants, toddlers, children under the age of six, and
children less than 60 pounds should be properly secured in certified childsafety seats in the backseat of a vehicle. Rear-facing child passenger
restraint systems can only be used in the backseat even if the child is
of age and meet the weight requirement. Children aged four to seven
should be secured in a certified booster seat. Children older than seven
can use a standard seatbelt; however they should ride in the back
seat until they are 13. Drivers, passengers and children have a 50
percent better chance of surviving a collision when using their seatbelt,
as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Do Not Leave Children Unattended in Vehicles
Children are curious and love to play in their parents’ car, but this can
run them the risk of getting themselves locked inside if they are left
unattended. Research from “Heat Stress from Enclosed Vehicles :
Moderate Ambient Temperatures Cause Significant Temperature Rise in
Enclose Vehicles,” conducted by San Francisco State University indicates
there have been a reported 498 child deaths in the United States since
1998, as a result of vehicular hyperthermia. The hot summer sun is even
hotter in a sealed vehicle; internal vehicle temperatures can reach up to
172 degrees Fahrenheit, even when outside temperatures are only 80 to
100 degrees Fahrenheit. Never leave your child unattended in a car for any
length of time; it is not only illegal, but can quickly become life threatening.
Always Wear a Helmet When Riding a Bicycle
Riding a bicycle is a fun and perfect form of exercise for children,
especially during the summer months. As with any form of recreation,
it is important that children practice proper safety techniques when
