Additional information on Lay Ministries in the early years…..
Two other lay organizations who supported our new Pastor, Fr. Michael Collins, were service ministries called the
Men's Club and the Women's Council. Fr. Collins' used both groups as consultative bodies regarding direction of
the parish. The Men's Club had many craftsmen and able bodied young men to support facility development. The ladies group was asked to organize the parish by districts.
Within the official parish boundaries, the Women's Council mapped out eight individual street-bordered areas called
Districts and elected District Captains. Districts had three major functions, one of which was to be plan rotations of recitation of the Rosary on a weekly basis at someone's home. These venues were also used to enhance parish communication, where the Pastor's thoughts were shared and the parishioners could provide feedback. They also became coordination points for providing help to others. The people in the distract would act as a welcoming committee to new people in
the parish who moved into a particular District. Father Collins and his assistant Fr. Buckman were frequent visitors to
District Rosaries and Meetings,
The Men's Club would organize work parties for cement pouring and leveling and painting projects. One example of
their consultative activity was to ask Father Collins to return to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to insist on a high ceiling gymnasium instead of a Meeting Hall only. The parish would be a place for congregation and sports activities
too! Two of their regular activities were Mass ushers and money counters.
Some other Lay functions emerged about the same time in the very early years: One was a St. Vincent de Paul cell at
St. Barbara to take care of the poor. The leaders of that were Fred Rioles, George Humeston and Don MacIssac. Around the same time, the Parish Legion of Mary group was formed, and became well known for promoting home
visitations, praying the Rosary and helping families consecrate themselves to the Blessed Mother. Two of the leaders
were Anthony McGlynn and Anthony Nieto. At the same time, Father Collins launched a Religious Education program
for Public School children. Key leaders were Mary Vierra and Barbara Meadows. Father Collins and the associate priest
handled adult formation which evolved into R.C.I.A. In 1970, Anthony Nieto initiated a group called Men of the Sacred
Heart. These men assisted families with a prayer and study program leading to the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart in
families. The undersigned took over this labor of love in 1973.
The beginning of St. Barbara’s Music Program was just an idea at the first Parish Picnic at Garden Grove City
Park. Later on, Betty Whipple offered to direct and this was the birth of St. Barbara’s

Nuestra postura es muchas veces un indicio de nuestra
hospitalidad y reverencia por el Señor. Observa las acciones de Abraham cuando saludó al Señor en presencia
de tres hombres que aparecieron cerca de su tienda. Corrió desde la entrada de la tienda a saludarlos. Se postró
en tierra a su encuentro. Él y Sara, su esposa, se apresuraron a preparar una comida y llevarle alimento y agua
a sus invitados.
En el relato del Evangelio, María, la amiga de Jesús, se
sentó a sus pies para escucharlo hablar.
¿Cómo le damos la bienvenida y reverenciamos al Señor?
¿Qué demuestran nuestras acciones? ¿Recordamos la
presencia del Señor en el Santísimo Sacramento? ¿Cómo
le damos la bienvenida al Señor en las lecturas de las Escrituras? ¿Cómo reconocemos su presencia en nuestros
hermanos y hermanas, tanto en la Misa como después?
Ya sea que nos arrodillemos, nos pongamos de pie o nos
sentemos ante la presencia del Señor, que nuestro corazón y nuestra mente esté siempre en sintonía con él.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
América es un continente nacido del mestizaje que tomó
a los europeos, los indígenas y los africanos para engendrar algo nuevo. Normalmente pensamos en el mestizaje
de sangre que produjo nuevas razas latinoamericanas.
Pero también existe el mestizaje cultural que produce
nuevos elementos latinoamericanos. Uno de estos es el
sarape, hijo de la tilma pre-colombina y el manto español. Este mestizaje en tela tiene sus principios en el siglo
XVIII con una proliferación de talleres en Zacatecas, Saltillo y otros lugares. Esta cobija colorida, de algodón o
lana, fue desarrollada para añadir color y belleza a los
charros de siglos pasados.
A través de la historia el sarape ha sido usado por
vaqueros, jinetes, soldados y revolucionarios. Hoy día el
sarape, jorongo, frazada, gabán o cobija se ha convertido en símbolo de tradición mexicana y se encuentra
decorando hogares, restaurantes e iglesias. México no
es el único país que ha desarrollado un mestizaje en tela, también Guatemala, Colombia, El Salvador y otros
más tienen sus telas y tapetes particulares que mezclan
los colores y los diseños para celebrar el talento y la creatividad del mestizaje latinoamericano.
