In November 2014, the city of Ronda hosted the First Spanish Canyoning Championship. This is a
sporting event organised by the Federación Andaluza de Espelología, together with different
entities, institutions and privately-owned companies. The individual and team events were held
on a stretch of the River Tajo starting from the Puente Nuevo in Ronda. The result was a great
event, both from an organisational sporting perspective, with the participation of over 100 sports
men and women together with an additional 500 other people travelling to Ronda, including
organisers and friends and family of the participants.
From the 16th to the 18th of September 2016, the Federación Andaluza de Espelología together
with the Asociación Española de Espeleología y Barrancos (ASEDEB), are organising a new, much
more ambitious competition, not only due to the location where it will be held, but also due to
the different types of sports that will take place in this unique scenario, the Tajo of Ronda.
Simultaneously during these days, the following events will be carried out:




1st European Open of V. P. T (Vertical Progression Techniques) in Caving
1st European Open of Canyoning
4th Andalusian Open of V.P.T in Caving
4th Andalusian Open of Canyoning
Registration will be open to Andalusian and European sports men and women (from the entire
continent, not only from the EU). Andalusian participants’ scores will be automatically validated
for the European events.

PARTICIPANTS AND REGISTRATION:
Registration will be open to European sports men and women (from the entire continent, not
only from the EU). Technical knowledge should be demonstrated by means of proper
qualifications
issued
by
a
sporting
organisation
or
institution
(sports
technician/training/TECO/TAFAE/monitor, etc.). It should be related to the technical difficulties
of the event or the participation in other similar events. The Organising Committee reserves the
right to accept/refuse these qualifications.
There will be a maximum number of enrolments for each event. Further information
concerning enrolment, fees and other useful details will be provided in future communications.

The scores of the Andalusian participants will count for the rankings of the different events,
including both the Andalusian and European Opens, and their different options.
REGULATIONS
All the specifications regarding the technical equipment that has to be used by the
competitors, regulations of the events, offenses, penalties, etc., will be provided in future
communications.
In V.P.T. caving modality, participation will be individual. In Canyoning, participation is
permitted in two categories: individual (with fixed facilities) and in pairs (with part of the
facilities fixed and the other, placed by the competitors).

Events
 V.P.T. caving (junior, senior and veterans)
The circuit starts at the Paseo del Parador, abseiling down using a guided rope that will be
anchored to a tubular platform measuring 4x2x4 metres (long x wide x high). Together with the
counterweights, there will a safety rope tied to the columns of the Parador itself, at a sufficient
height, allowing enough space to let the pedestrians pass by.

This is the beginning of the (approximately) 350 metre lineal circuit to be overcome. Almost
half of the distance will be climbed using single ropes.
After climbing down this stretch down to the balcony located on the right pillar of the Puente
Nuevo, the competitors will continue descending towards the base of the bridge on the inner
side of the arch.

Once at the base of the bridge, and with the help of a handrail, the competitors will go to the
rear side of the pillar. They will climb, using vertical progression caving techniques, the three
different sections, up to the arcade of the bridge placed on this side. After this, they will go out
onto the main side of the Puente Nuevo.
Using the same circuit that was installed for the previous Spanish Canyoning Championship in
2014, the competitors will climb and descend the main side of the pillar, climbing the handrail
ledge up to the starting platform on Armiñán Street in front of the Santo Domingo Convent.

 Canyoning (junior, senior and veterans
The circuit which has been designed for this test is amazing, not only for competitors, but also
for those who will be there during the event. It starts with a guided abseiling followed by a 100
metre zip-line. The guided abseiling runs from a platform located on the viewpoint next to the
Santo Domingo Convent, to the viewpoint at the Jardines de Cuenca (Cuenca Gardens) on the
opposite side of the River Tajo.
From these gardens, the circuit continues with a zip-line down to the Puente Viejo, where an
abseiling line begins, down to the bottom of the Tajo. It continues along the Guadalevín riverbed
through the traditional descent of the Tajo de Ronda canyon.

To make the abseiling more magnificent, some sprinklers will be located on the parapet of the
Puente Viejo, simulating a waterfall spraying down over the sports men and women. This water
flow will help to clean the river, removing water that possibly still remains from the summer due
to a shortage of rain.

The competitors will continue going down the canyon overcoming another 36 metre abseiling
line. There will be an astonishing waterfall, along with other cascades, jumps and descents down
to the Albergue del Molino where the finish line will be.

The core of the activity will be located at the Santo Domingo Convent, where we will find:

There will be one giant television screen in Plaza de España and another one on the main
façade of the Santo Domingo Convent with the same dimensions and characteristics of the
screen that was used in the 2014 Championship.
