What a Difference a Year Makes
Since our last report to the community, growth has been
a key focus of the Foundation’s activities. This growth is
a result of your generosity and that of our ever expanding
family of supporters, combined with the rebound in the
financial markets. We are pleased to report that the
University Hospital Foundation continues to successfully
advance its mission to raise funds to support life-saving
patient care programs, technology and leading-edge
research at the University of Alberta Hospital and
the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees and our staff, we
extend our deepest gratitude to you – our many donors,
supporters and volunteers – who help to advance the
highest level of patient care, research and education
at our sites.

Connecting Your Generosity at…
Each year, many thousands of patients from Edmonton, central and northern Alberta and
Canada’s north come to the University of Alberta Hospital for the highest level of specialized care.
The cornerstone of a growing family of leading-edge health care facilities, the University Hospital
is also recognized for its role in integrating academic excellence and research, attracting
international experts and educating the health care leaders of tomorrow.

The University Hospital is home to one of North
America’s leading brain sciences programs and Canada’s
only stand-alone Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit.
Generous donor support for this program ensures that
neurologists and neurosurgeons have the very latest
technology available to diagnose and treat life-threatening
conditions and diseases that affect the brain and
spinal cord.
A commitment from the University Hospital
Foundation to raise funds through the 2009 Annual
Campaign and the 2010 Festival of Trees has made the
purchase of a new Zeiss Pentero neurosurgical microscope
possible at the University Hospital. This state-of-the-art
equipment allows surgeons to operate with pinpoint
precision on the delicate tissue of the brain.

The Gift of Life
The University of Alberta Hospital is one of Canada’s
longest standing and largest transplant centres and is
home to the only transplant program in Canada to
provide all types of tissue and organ transplantation.
It is a national leader in both the number of transplants
performed and the success rates of organ transplantation.
Above: The transplant team performs an organ transplantation.
Below: Christina Hornig takes precious first breaths after receiving a
double-lung transplant while Registered Nurse, Lana Munro, looks on.
“This transplant saved my life. Before I had surgery,
it was becoming more and more difficult just to breathe.
My focus was pretty much trying to stay alive. Now
I am looking forward to really living my life. I don’t
have the words to express my gratitude.”

Transplant “Firsts”
“Currently, our centre performs
approximately 250 transplants a year.
So that tells us that at any time there are
several thousand Albertans who are living
because of a transplanted organ. The
support we received through the 2009
Festival of Trees for a dedicated transplant operating
room will, very simply, help us save lives.”

Connecting Your Generosity at…
Over 35,000 patients have come to the Mazankowksi Alberta Heart Institute for world-class cardiac care
since it first opened its doors in July 2009. Since that time, over 1300 open-heart surgeries have been
performed at the heart institute. Exciting new technology, techniques and procedures continue to evolve
and move cardiac care forward.
In addition to funds raised through a successful Capital
Campaign, Foundation donors contributed a further
$6.6 million toward a state-of-the art, specially-equipped
hybrid operating room at the heart institute. Less invasive
hybrid procedures allow cardiologists, cardiac surgeons
and radiologists to work side by side in the operating room,
treating complex cardiac conditions that once required
open-heart surgery – reducing both risk and recovery time.
Dr. Steven Meyer, Dr. Benjamin Tyrell and Dr. Robert Welsh perform
a TAVI (Trans-catheter Aortic Valve Implant) procedure.
Revolutionary Procedure
Offers New Hope
The first Trans-catheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVI)
surgery in Alberta was performed at the Mazankowski
Alberta Heart Institute in May 2010. This exciting new
hybrid procedure involves inserting a tube and balloon
catheter through the femoral artery in the groin until it
reaches the aorta. The catheter is inflated and the new
valve is inserted without ever opening the chest cavity
– offering new hope to elderly or high-risk patients who
are otherwise too weak to undergo open-heart surgery.
UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2009 / 2010
Dr. Miriam Shanks consults with patient, Eugene Setrakov.
“Before I had the valve replacement surgery, I was
so weak I couldn’t walk across the room. Now I am
on the go. I can’t remember the last time I felt so
good. This valve has given me a new lease on life.”
– Eugene Setrakov, cardiac Patient
www.GiveToMaz.ca
the MAZANKOWSKI ALBERTA HEART INSTITUTE
“The number of cardiac
catheterizations we are able
to perform has increased
dramatically in the past year,
and continues to increase
as we become even more
efficient. The average length
of stay has decreased because
patients aren’t waiting three
or four days to have the
procedure. This means that
patients are going home to
their loved ones sooner.
That’s what we want.”

section head, edmonton zone
Dr. Blair O’Neill and Registered
Nurse, Susan Yacyna, supervise a

A
Milestone Celebration and a New Home!
The first heart transplant in western Canada was performed at the
University Hospital in 1985. This year, the Heart Transplant Team
celebrated the 25th Anniversary of heart transplantation in their new
home at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute. In the past year,
they performed 53 life-saving heart transplants.
New Research Takes Aim at High Blood Pressure
Through a $250,000 research grant from
the J. Armand Bombardier Foundation,
Dr. Branko Braam and Dr. Yutaka Yasui
are conducting a three-year genome
research project using highly sophisticated
technology at the Alberta Cardiovascular and
Stroke Research Centre (ABACUS) in the
Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute. This
research will identify how risk factors that
lead to cardiovascular disease affect white
blood cells, and how these white blood cells
react to high blood pressure medication.
“Research is absolutely critical in
optimizing how we treat patients with
heart disease. An environment where you
have excellence in research creates a parallel
environment of excellence in clinical care.
The Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute
is a perfect example of this. The teams that
are involved in research are the same teams
that are involved in clinical care – bringing new knowledge
to the bedside as it comes to light.”

Connecting Your Generosity at…
The Edmonton Clinic South will be the newest addition to the University of Alberta Hospital family
of facilities. Strategically located directly across from the University Hospital and beside the University
of Alberta’s Edmonton Clinic North, this state-of-the-art facility will merge world-class health care
delivery and academic excellence – quite literally, transforming the way we deliver care.
Every feature of the Edmonton Clinic South has been
designed to create the ideal outpatient experience – linking
to inpatient clinical care at the University Hospital and
extending the reach of excellence by connecting patients
to the very best in specialized care and services.
Unique to our province, this nine-storey, 670,000 sq. ft.
outpatient facility, currently under construction, will bring
over 170 multi-disciplinary teams of specialists together
under one roof, treating up to one million patients a year.
Many clinics, including surgical, medical, family and
senior’s services, as well as orthopedic and neurosciences
clinics will relocate from the University Hospital, freeing
much needed space for expanded inpatient care.
Using the latest technology, health care providers will
share one source of information to coordinate patient

will use integrated technology to access health records and
handle bookings, referrals and scheduling. This will make
it possible for patients to access multiple specialists and
support services on the same day, in one convenient
location.
the Edmonton clinic south
Examination areas will have ample space
for patients and their families to interact
with specialists and clinicians.
“One of the most exciting things about the
Edmonton Clinic South is the consolidation of care.
By having all the clinics together, we will be able
to coordinate appointments for patients so they
can have their health care needs met in one visit
– rather than having multiple appointments at
different times, across separate sites. This will
have a huge impact on our patients, their
families and caregivers.”
– Glenda Coleman-Miller ,Vice President, University
“Patients and their families
will experience spacious
waiting rooms with
open views and natural
sunlight. Each waiting
area will connect with a
front reception leading to a
centralized clinic area. All
materials, equipment and
staff movement will occur
along the back side of the
building, creating a calmer,
more patient-centered
environment.”

The Campaign for Prostate Health
It’s about men. It’s about time. It’s about taking action NOW.
The University Hospital Foundation, Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation and Alberta Cancer Foundation
have joined forces to raise $30 million to ensure that patients benefit from timely access to specialized
services, the latest surgical treatment options and continued advancements in prostate care and research.
Through the dedicated leadership of University Hospital
Foundation Trustees Irv Kipnes and C.J. Woods, the
Campaign Leadership Team is raising funds to develop
a specialized rapid-access prostate health clinic, create
an Innovation and Research Fund and support the
province-wide Alberta Prostate Cancer Research Initiative.
As well, $4 million from the Campaign has been used to
purchase two state-of-the-art robotic surgery systems
now benefiting patients at both the University of Alberta
Hospital and the Royal Alexandra Hospital.
We thank the many sponsors, volunteers and participants
who have made each of the three campaign fundraising
events incredibly successful.

Robotic Surgery: A New Option
Tom Nicholson always enjoyed excellent
health. Married for 30 years, with two
adult daughters, he stayed active through
his interest in real estate investment and
spent as much time as possible working
with his wife in their garden.
He scheduled regular annual physical
check-ups with his family physician
and had every reason to expect a long
and healthy retirement. As part of
his examination in the fall of 2009,
his doctor performed a blood test to
monitor PSA levels in his blood.* The results were
slightly elevated.
Tom’s doctor suggested re-testing in three or four
months. In February 2010, his PSA had risen again and
a biopsy was performed. The results confirmed that
Tom had prostate cancer. “After doing some research,
I decided that the best option for me would be robotic
surgery. I was thrilled to discover that Edmonton is
one of the few centres in Canada to offer this
treatment,” Tom tells us.
Tom had the robotic surgery on July 9th, 2010.
“I am very grateful to the many prostate health
campaign donors whose contributions made this
technology available,” says Tom. “Everyone
who I came into contact with throughout
my experience was exceptional – my family
physician, surgeon, the many nurses whose
compassion and kindness helped to reassure
me in the OR and on the unit – right down
to the smiling faces that brought me my
meals and cleaned my room.”
After a brief recovery period, Tom
returned to his normal activities and is
spending time at the gym, jogging regularly
and working in his garden. A self-described
“poster boy” for early detection, he is spreading the
word to everyone he can about the importance of
regular prostate exams.
*Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) is a protein that is specific
to the prostate gland. It is detected in small amounts in
men with healthy prostates.
“I am very lucky to have been diagnosed early
with prostate cancer. At first, I wanted to keep this
experience to myself, but now I just want to help get
the word out there. It is crucial that men understand
how important it is to have regular prostate exams.”
– Tom Nicholson, robotic surgery patient

Cabinet Member, Reza Nasseri.
“Positive community involvement is key to building
and maintaining healthy, prosperous communities.
Every one of us has the ability to contribute to the
greater good.”

2009 Festival of Trees
An Enchanted Journey – 25th Anniversary Celebration
The University Hospital Foundation extends our deepest gratitude to the many
dedicated volunteers, sponsors and designers who have come together every year for
the past quarter of a century to create one of Edmonton’s most beloved holiday events.
The 25th annual Festival of Trees was truly “An Enchanted
Journey.” Over 30,000 people enjoyed the special events
and amazing displays at the Shaw Conference Centre. For
the fourth year in a row, the Festival raised over $1 million
(net). Funds raised in 2009 will support the purchase of
highly specialized equipment for a dedicated transplant
operating room at the University of Alberta Hospital.
“This milestone Festival
was a shining example of
community and holiday
spirit. Building on a
tradition of hard work
and dedication, the
Steering Committee,
volunteers and designers created an aweinspiring event. I feel privileged to have
been a part of it.”
– Gertie Dean, Chair, 2009 Festival of Trees
25 Years of Amazing Volunteers!
Since the Festival began in 1985, it has continued to
evolve and change. One thing that remains constant is
the amazing people who dedicate their time, expertise,
ideas and imagination to the creation of this magical
event. On November 27th, 2009, the Foundation
hosted a special celebration to recognize
the outstanding contributions of the
many, many dedicated volunteers who
have worked tirelessly over the years
to bring the Festival to life.
“It was truly a
pleasure to have
been a part of the
25th Anniversary
Celebration recognizing
the many amazing volunteers
who come to us every year, some
year after year, offering to help.
We wanted to reach out to everyone who
has contributed to the Festival and offer
them a special and heartfelt “thank you.” We simply could not
have reached this milestone without them.”
The first Festival of Trees in Edmonton and Canada started with
one great idea and two great volunteers – Betty Carlson and Fran
Olson (above). Their vision laid the building blocks for what is now
Edmonton’s premier holiday event and Canada’s largest Festival
of Trees.

Medical Research
Changing the Future of Health Care
Each day, medical researchers make discoveries that advance our understanding and improve the lives
of people living with disease or disability. Donor support plays a key role in funding exciting new research
at the University of Alberta Hospital and Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute. In the past three years,
the University Hospital Foundation has directed over $2 million to support promising research through
the Medical Research Competition, Team Research Grants and Cardiac Research Grants. In addition,
many other research projects have been funded through donor designated gifts and distributions from
Established Funds. Donor support for medical research is helping to ensure that patients benefit from
new knowledge and emerging treatments that will reduce the impact of disease.

New Roads to Understanding
The kidneys are responsible for cleansing the blood of
toxins and other waste – a process that is key to survival.
Patients experiencing kidney failure have very few options
in terms of treatment and must either undergo regular and
time-consuming dialysis treatments or they must receive
a kidney transplant.
The glomerulus is a mass of tiny tubes in the kidney
that filters the blood. Certain types of disease cause an
inflammatory response in these filters. This condition,
called glomerulonephritis, can have a devastating effect
on the kidneys, and currently, up to 15% of patients with
18
UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2009 / 2010
glomerulonephritis will experience kidney failure.
Through the Team Research Grant, the University
Hospital Foundation is funding a multi-disciplinary team
research project led by Dr. Allan Murray. This project is
examining the causes of glomerulonephritis and working
toward the development of new treatments. In addition,
the team is working to create a detailed database designed
to share key information about the condition with other
kidney specialists across the province. This will allow
patients to benefit from the most comprehensive data and
up-to-date treatments for this life-threatening condition.
“If you look at health care
like a growing tree, medical
research, innovation and
discovery form the roots of the
tree. The water to the roots
has always been philanthropy.
Without the water, the tree
will die.”

Multiple Sclerosis and Decision Making
Dr. Esther Fujiwara administers a cognitive test.
Multiple Sclerosis is the most common neurological disease affecting
young Canadian adults, and Alberta has one of the highest rates of
this disease in the world.
The frontal lobes of the brain are known to control decision
making and the ability to self-regulate behaviour. Often, as multiple
sclerosis progresses, the frontal lobes of the brain are affected to
some degree.
In a promising research project funded by the Foundation’s
Medical Research Competition, Dr. Esther Fujiwara and a team of
scientists are examining a link between frontal lobe involvement and
increased difficulty in decision making for patients with multiple
sclerosis. High resolution MRI images can help indicate which areas
of the brain are affected by the disease and if the affected areas are
used in the process of making decisions. This research could lead to
a greater understanding of the progression and effects of multiple
sclerosis and could ultimately lead to new treatments.
Parkinson’s and Hip Fracture
Patients with Parkinson’s disease frequently have difficulty
with walking and balance. Previous studies indicate that
there may be an increased number of hip fractures in
elderly Parkinson’s patients as a result of this difficulty. In
a new study funded by the Medical Research Competition,
specialists in neurology and epidemiology are compiling
data about the frequency of Parkinson’s disease in Alberta
in various populations and determining whether or not
this disease is contributing to an increased number of
broken hips. This study will also look at what happens to
patients after they have experienced a fracture and if there
are different outcomes for different populations. These data
will help inform policy about services and treatments for
Parkinson’s patients with the aim of reducing the number
of patients who will experience disabling hip fractures.

Movement Disorders
Advancing Care – One Step at a Time
Thousands of Albertans live with Parkinson’s disease and its disabling effects every day. Donor support
for research and specialized equipment in support of Parkinson’s and other movement disorders helps
move our understanding of these conditions forward and brings us one step closer to a cure.
Taking it in Stride
For most of us, walking is so automatic that we seldom
think about the marvel of balance, coordination and
movement required to place one foot in front of the other
and move our bodies forward in an upright posture.
Movement disorders, however, often affect the
functions of balance and coordination – seriously
impacting the ability to walk. Treatment programs for
people who are experiencing difficulty walking include
physiotherapy to build and strengthen weakened muscles
and to develop strategies and techniques to help a person
stay active for as long as possible.
Through generous donor support, the University
Hospital Foundation funded the purchase of a highly
specialized mat that assists with the assessment and
treatment of walking difficulties for use in the Movement
Disorders Program. The GaitRite mat allows specialists
to obtain data about the way a person walks – speed, step
width, foot pressure, time between steps, distance between
steps. These are all factors that are affected as a movement

Helen Mak and Hung Chuan Kua
When 37-year-old Helen Mak first noticed a twitch in
her right pinkie finger, she attributed it to the high stress
of her teaching position. After a restful summer, the
twitching was getting worse, and Helen went to visit
her family doctor. She was referred to the Movement
Disorders Clinic, and it turned out that the twitch was

not related to stress at all. Helen was diagnosed with
early onset Parkinson’s disease. “Even though I was
starting to suspect it was more serious, actually hearing
the diagnosis was devastating. It felt like a rock in my
stomach,” says Helen.
In the hope of slowing the progression of the
disease, Helen decided to stop working and has been
very proactive in managing her Parkinson’s. In spite of
excellent treatment, the disease continues to progress.
“Some days I can walk three or four kilometers, and
other days I can’t walk across the room,” Helen tells us.
Although the last decade has brought about
tremendous advances in our understanding of
Parkinson’s disease, much more research is necessary
to find better treatments, or better yet, a cure for this
debilitating disorder.
Helen and her husband, Hung Chuan Kua, created
the United Parkinson’s Disease Research and Patient
Care Endowment Fund as an expression of their deep
gratitude for the tremendous care Helen has received,
and also to provide others with hope that one day
Parkinson’s disease will be a thing of the past.
Community Events
Raising Funds and Friends
Each year, the University Hospital Foundation benefits from the generosity of donors through creative
fundraising events organized to support the University of Alberta Hospital and the Mazankowski Alberta
Heart Institute. We gratefully acknowledge the hard work and commitment of coordinators, volunteers,
supporters and participants for the following and numerous other events held throughout the year.
The First “Last Great Run of the Season”
The first annual Heartbeat Run and Heart Health
Symposium was held on September 26th, 2009. Over 200
people laced up and got their hearts pumping to support
cardiac health. At the heart institute, cardiac experts were
on hand to answer questions and offer information about
the latest advances in cardiac care.
The run included a 1k fun run, a 5k walk/run and a
10k run in support of the Mazankowski Alberta Heart
Institute. The University Hospital Foundation extends
thanks to the organizing committee – Co-chair, Dr. Robert
Welsh; Co-chair, Dr. Blair O’Neill; Suzanne Welsh and
Trevor Soll.
A Pledge to a “Heart Healthier” Future
Just a few days before Valentine’s Day, people from
across western and northern Canada opened their hearts
and gave over $80,000 to fund the purchase of the latest
diagnostic technology for the Mazankowski Alberta
Heart Institute.
630 CHED hosted the fourth Heart Pledge Day
Radiothon live from the 2nd floor of the heart institute
on February 10th, 2010. Cardiac specialists, patients and
their loved ones shared their stories to raise awareness
and funds in support of heart health.

Donor Gifts
Supporting a Better Future
A Second Birthday
Not many can say they have reason to celebrate their
birthday twice a year. Then again, not many have
received a double-lung transplant – giving them a
second chance at life.
Dennis and Terry Hockett are grateful every day
to the anonymous organ donor and their family, and
to the remarkably talented transplant and rehabilitation teams at the University of Alberta Hospital.
In recognition of the excellent care Dennis received,
he and Terry presented the University Hospital
Foundation with a very generous gift in support of
the transplant and transplant rehabilitation programs.
For many years, Dennis Hockett lived with
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, severely
limiting his day-to-day activities. His difficulty
breathing interfered with every facet of his life,
especially running his business. “It got to the point
where I couldn’t even have a decent conversation
because I was more interested in where I was going
to get my next breath,” Dennis tells us. He relied on
24-hour oxygen therapy for two years before receiving
his transplant and struggled with his breathing for
eight years prior to the surgery.
“We are deeply grateful to the Hocketts, to the many
donors who contributed through the Festival of Trees
and to those who continue to give to the Transplant
Program at the University Hospital. It is this support
that gives us the extra edge and helps us continue to
advance this important field of medicine.” – Dr. Dale Lien, medical director, lung Transplant program,
university of alberta hospital

UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2009 / 2010
Dennis and Terry Hockett
If I hadn’t had my transplant, I would probably not
be alive today. I was given such an amazing gift. I am
so grateful to the family who gave this to me and to
the doctors and staff who gave me such great care.
It felt important for me to give back.”
– Dennis hockett, double-lung transplant recipient
For most of his life, Dennis worked hard in
business and didn’t make much time for physical
activity. At the time of his surgery, he was too
weak to manage even the simplest of tasks. The
surgery itself was difficult, but Dennis noticed small
improvements daily. “As the hoses and tubes started
coming out, I started to feel better,” he tells us.
After surgery, there was much to do before Dennis
was ready to leave the hospital. The physical therapy
team at the University Hospital designed a program
to condition his new lungs and build up the strength
he lost through years of illness and inactivity. Today,
he swears by his new exercise regimen. “You don’t
realize how important it is until you see how much
better you feel.”
Dennis feels “reborn” due to his healthy new
lungs and increased energy levels. He and his wife,
Terry, are enjoying activities they haven’t been able
to participate in for years – like week-end trips to
their cabin to spend time with family and a recent
trip to the Columbia ice fields, a site Dennis figures
he’s driven by a hundred times, until now never
having visited the summit.
A Loving Legacy
As a young child, Ken Dilley contracted scarlet fever
and while in hospital, he was exposed to and contracted
polio. He was substantially disabled and had to learn to
walk again at the age of seven. This experience shaped
him and left him with his life’s motto, “If you can do it,
I can do it.” He has embraced this philosophy for all
of his 89 years.
Ken married Connie in 1946 and they shared
62 happy years together. Heart disease was part of
the landscape of their lives for many of those years.
Both Ken and Connie’s mothers were affected by
heart disease. Connie’s mother suffered a heart attack
at the age of 70 and was cared for by Ken and Connie
for many years before she passed away at the age of 90.
Connie developed an irregular heartbeat and
was treated effectively for over 20 years until she
suffered heart failure in 2009. While she was ill, she
and Ken chose to make a gift together to the University
Hospital Foundation in support of the Mazankowski
Alberta Heart Institute Highest Priority Fund and the
Firefighters’ Burn Treatment Unit.
Connie lived to see their wish fulfilled and passed
away peacefully at 86 years of age. Mr. Dilley continues
to live his life to the fullest, every day.
An Unexpected Journey
Early in 2010, 31-year-old Tyson Feairs began
experiencing mild headaches and some blurred vision
in his left eye. After a visit to his optometrist revealed
irregularities, further tests were ordered. On June
9th, 2010, Tyson was diagnosed with a benign brain
tumour.
He was referred to neurosurgeon Dr. David Steinke
at the University of Alberta Hospital for treatment.
“Dr. Steinke was very patient, calm and reassuring,

“I’m glad Connie and I were able to assist in our way.

to make a difference.” – Ken Dilley
thoroughly describing my diagnosis and treatment
options,” Tyson tells us. “After our meeting, I knew
there was no better facility in the country to undergo
this operation.”
Tyson made the decision to have the tumour
removed, and the surgery was successfully performed
within two weeks of diagnosis. Following surgery,
Tyson quickly returned to his normal activities.
“I felt so lucky not to have any pain or other adverse
side effects from surgery that I wanted to keep active
and enjoy this gift,” he says. “I feel strong, vigorous,
alert, and I have a new appreciation for life. I owe this
to so many people – my optometrist Dr. Campbell,
Dr. Steinke and the surgical team, the caring nurses
and my loving, supportive friends and family.”
In the coming months, Tyson will receive followup treatment at the University Hospital and has every
hope for a full recovery.
In appreciation of the exceptional care Tyson
received at the University Hospital, he chose to
support the brain sciences program through a
generous monthly gift. “I owe my life to the dedicated
people and modern technology used in the operation.
I wanted to give back in some way as a thank you and
to help those who will be diagnosed in the future.”

Management Discussion of 2009/2010 Financial Statements
With this Annual Report, we are pleased to include a discussion
providing additional insight into the Foundation’s 2009-10
financial statements and performance.
Accounting Changes
This year’s financial statements reflect a new format for the
Statement of Operations and Changes in Net Assets. Due to
amendments to Section 4400 of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA) Handbook, we are now required to
present our revenue and expenditures on a gross basis. Therefore, the 2008/09 revenue and expenditures have been restated to
reflect this new requirement. In previous years, the revenue from
Festival of Trees (FOT) and Full House Lottery (FHL) were presented on a net basis in the Statement of Operations.
Also, the new CICA guidelines have narrowed the definition
of what qualifies as an asset and liability. We must now expense
some of the costs of the FHL 2010 in the 2009/10 fiscal year. In
previous years, the entire FHL 2010 revenue and expenses would
have been included in next year’s (2010/11) financial statements.
It should also be noted that revenue from the 2010 FHL was recognized when the final prize draws are made, which occurred in
July, 2010. As a result, the Foundation’s share of the revenue
from the 2010 FHL, a joint venture with the Royal Alexandra
Hospital Foundation, at March 31, 2010 is shown as deferred
revenue.
Financial Performance Highlights
This past year, the Foundation raised $27 million in gross revenue, ($12 million – 2008/09) which includes investment income
of $9.4 million ([$6.1] million – 2008/09). After expenditures of
$8.4 million ($8.3 million in 2008/09), net revenue, which is our
primary measure of success, was $18.8 million, a significant
increase over the prior fiscal year ($4 million – 2008/09).
As prudent stewards of our donors’ dollars, we work diligently to ensure that we efficiently and effectively raise and
manage our donor gifts. The Foundation employs a variety of
fundraising programs such as annual giving and major gifts
campaigns, direct mail, donor prospecting, special events and
lotteries. Each fundraising method has certain expenses associated with it. Special events and lotteries have significantly higher
costs (for example lottery prizes) than other fundraising events,
but the revenue they provide to the Foundation is substantial
and invaluable. For example, Festival of Trees and Full House
Lottery contributed $3.3 million in net revenue which accounts
for a third of our net fundraising revenue (before investment
income).
As a licensed charity in Alberta, the University Hospital
Foundation complies with guidelines established by Service
Alberta to determine cost of fundraising. (The cost of special
events and lotteries is not included in Service Alberta’s calculation
of the cost of fundraising.) Our cost of fundraising this past fiscal
year was 11%, which represents an effective use of the resources
and assets entrusted to us.
24
UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2009 / 2010
The Foundation’s Statement of Financial Position remains
strong and healthy, with over $66 million in net assets ($56 million- 2008/09) invested in a diverse portfolio, which is managed
by two investment firms. The investment returns achieved in
this fiscal year, due to favorable market conditions and very good
investment management, are a welcome change from the market turmoil of the previous two years. We are pleased to report
that our investment managers (Bissett Investment Management and Mawer Investment Management Ltd.) returned 22.5%
(-12.9% – 2008/09). Their consolidated returns outperformed
their benchmark as outlined in the Foundation’s Investment
Policy by 4.5%. Their benchmark is comprised of 50% fixed
income, 25% Canadian equities, 12% US equities and 13% International equities.
As at March 31, 2010, our Established Funds totalled $35.4
million ($34.9 million – 2008/09). Established Funds are an important source of fundraising revenue. With Established Funds,
the donation is invested, the principal remains untouched and
the investment income is distributed regularly to support priorities designated by the donor.
The rate allocated for distributions to the Established Funds
is based on the five-year net annualized return on our long term
investments. Due to excellent investment returns, we increased
our investment income allocation by 60% to our named Established Funds. In this fiscal year, 3.23% (2.03% – 2008/09) of
invested funds, or $1.1 million ($.7 million – 2008/09) was allocated to the Established Funds, which are listed in Schedule 1, on
page 27, of the Financial Statements.
Effective March 4, 2010, the Federal Budget removed the
requirement that public foundations disburse 80% of their
previous year’s tax receipted revenue. The University Hospital
Foundation, however, has always distributed more than required
by the Canada Revenue Agency. In the past year, the Foundation
distributed over $9.3 million ($7.1 million – 2008/09) to advance
research and patient care at the University of Alberta Hospital
and the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.
The Foundation is currently holding $6.4 million in cash
and term deposits which will be distributed in the near term
to satisfy the Foundation’s current funding commitments to
Alberta Health Services (AHS). With changes at AHS, various
projects are being reviewed and reassessed by AHS, thus requiring the Foundation to hold its cash for longer than expected. We
anticipate that in the near future, there will be a significant outflow of cash to fund a number of outstanding priorities, which
will benefit current and future patients at our facilities.

Note 1: Change in Accounting Policy
Effective April 1, 2009, the Foundation adopted the Canadian
Institute of Chartered Acocuntants (“CICA”) amendments to
section 1000 of the CICA Handbook. These amendments clarified the criteria for recognition of an asset or liability, removing
the ability to recognize assets or liabilities solely on the basis of
matching of revenue and expense items. The Foundation has
retrospectively adopted the recommendations, and therefore
the 2009 comparative figures have been restated.

Certain of the Foundation’s deferred expenditures no longer
meet the definition of an asset. This change has been applied
retroactively and has decreased the previously reported opening
balance of the externally restricted fund by $894,481, increased
special events expenditures by $59,439, and decreased deferred
expenditures by $953,920. In the current year, charges in the
amount of $578,194, which would have formerly been deferred,
were expensed. The net impact to expenditures in the current
year was an increase in special events expenditures of $375,726.
