The 22nd Annual Mountain Heritage Festival
The 22nd annual Mountain Heritage Festival
spills out onto the Main Street of historic downtown
Sparta, N.C., from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It’s a day
filled with live music on the stage at the center of
town, and some 100 vendors offering a variety of
tastes, arts and crafts of these mountains. The
festival closes with the traditional Possum Queen
Contest, where contestants put their talent on
display in hopes of being crowned the 2016 Possum Queen. It is a crowd pleaser emceed by local
comic, Hillbilly Wes, that has to be seen to be fully
appreciated.

Sparta is located in the heart of the Blue Ridge,
the most convenient town to the North Carolina
Piedmont. From I-77 take Exit 83 (left hand exit
northbound only), or Exit 85 southbound, then follow US 21N up the mountain for 29 miles to Sparta.
2pm: WestWend
There is entertainment throughout the day on
the Main Stage where Main Street/U.S. 21 intersects N.C. 18. The schedule of events is as follows
(subject to change):
Changing Lanes is a hard driving bluegrass/gospel band made up of youthful members Jesse Allen
on lead guitar, Ethan Edward on mandolin/banjo,
and Alan Young on banjo/mandolin. All three are
vocalists. They hail from Laurel Fork, Va.
10am: Opening Ceremonies
National Anthem performed by 11-yearold Karis Howell. Colors presented by the
Possum Queen Contest, Hillbilly Wes to
emcee - Come see who will take home the
crown.
ShadowGrass is a young bluegrass band based
out of Southwest Virginia. The band includes
16-year-old Luke Morris, mandolin and vocals,
15-year-old Clay Russell,
banjo, 14-year-old Kitty Amaral, fiddle and vocals,
12-year-old Presley Barker, guitar and vocals, and
11-year-old Kyser George, bass and vocals.
WestWend is an Americana/country duo
comprised of Jonathan Maness, guitar and vocals,
and Wendy Crowe, vocals. Established in 2011 in
Knoxville, Tenn., they perform and record new and
traditional country music. With Jonathan’s roots
in bluegrass and Wendy’s roots stemming from

3:30pm: Rise and Shine Band
ShadowGrass
the Delta blues, classic country, and Motown, they
have come together to create their unique sound.
WestWend’s latest CD, “Linger For A While,” takes
bluegrass standards and makes them new again,
while their originals capture their audience with
a traditional flavor. Wendy’s voice has been best
compared to Alison Krauss’, while Jonathan’s rich
baritone and agile flatpicking are well known to
audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. WestWend
has performed at some of the biggest festivals in
the United States and Europe including: the Bristol
Rhythm and Roots Reunion, the National Cornbread Festival, the St. Augustine Seafood festival,
Rise & Shine Band
WestWend
the Pensacola Great Gulf Festival and more. They
also performed a 14-day tour in five European
countries. They have opened for Rhonda Vincent,
Guy Clark, and Tyler Hilton.
The Rise and Shine Band, the house band at
the Alleghany Jubilee, located in the former Spartan Theater on Sparta’s Main Street, is a regular
on the Mountain Heritage stage. They accompany
the contestants in the famous Possum Queen
Contest that closes out the festival. One of the
area’s premier bluegrass bands, it draws talent
from Sparta and surrounding mountain communities. The band includes: Billy Dancy, banjo; Wade
Petty, fiddle; Kermit Pruitt, bass; Charlie Edwards,
vocals and guitar; and Charlie Kinzer, guitar.
In addition to the vendors on Main Street, Sparta’s downtown merchants roll out the red carpet for
festival participants. Public restrooms are available
off the passageway beside the Alleghany Chamber
of Commerce at 58 S. Main St. Portable toilets and
handwashing stations are also stationed at various
locations in and about the festival.

musicians from all over the state. The symphony performs five Masterworks concerts each season
under the direction of Maestro John Gordon Ross, and holds other concerts in various venues

Will Delight Your Senses.
Sometime around the middle of
September the colors begin to
change. The guessing begins
among locals about when the
colors will peak. There are some
weather-related factors that play
a role in figuring out the timing,
but the middle of October is
usually a safe bet. One thing is
for sure though, if you visit anytime around mid-October, you
will not be disappointed.
Sparta offers a quaint downtown
that bustles with excitement in
the fall. The Mountain Arts Adventure Studio Tour, Oct. 14-16,
is an excellent time to visit. You
can enjoy the fall color as you
wander from studio to studio. If
you have children, plan to take
in the Fireman’s Parade on Oct.
13. Fire trucks from all over the
region drive slowly down Main
Street as the crowds cheer.
Colors will vary from deep burgundy red to cheerful, buttery
yellow and pumpkin orange.
When you toss in the crisp fall
evenings, and the smells of hot
apple cider and bonfires, you’ve
got yourself an amazing weekend.
They end the parade at the
Sparta firehouse where there are
snacks and goodies for kids. This
is small town living at its best.

Dancing at the Jubilee!
A
night at the Alleghany Jubilee in Sparta, N.C., is something special indeed. For
almost 20 years on Tuesday and
Saturday evenings, this has been a
place to go for music and dancing
that is truly unique to this community. If you are looking for a family
friendly evening of fun, you can bet
the Jubilee will provide this, plus a
whole lot more.
If you talk with Miss Agnes and
her nephew Jack, you will discover that they put their heart and
soul into the Alleghany Jubilee.
They love the people who come
week after week. This place really puts a smile on your face.
The atmosphere is cheerful and
welcoming.

The building is the former Spartan movie theater directly across
from the Courthouse in historic

the N.C. Mountain Arts Adventure
Studio Tour. If you have an interest
in handcrafted art in many different forms, this is an event you
will want to put on your calendar.
Sixteen different artists open their
studios to the public.
You have the opportunity to watch
the artists at work. See how raw
clay is transformed into a beautiful
bowl or vase as the potter spins his
wheel. See pieces of stained glass
become a colorful window. Ask
questions, and take home a treasure that is one of a kind.
The county hosts these talented
folks who offer everything from
hand-blown glass flowers and pottery to custom silver jewelry and
hand-crafted guitars. When you

mountain community along country back roads, beside streams,

Music on Main
Friday Night Fun in Downtown Sparta
Every first Friday of the month in
the summer and and early fall offers Music on Main beginning at 6
p.m. in Sparta’s historic downtown.
Most stores stay open, and many
host bands play to the delight of
customers and on-lookers. There is
usually a band on the Courthouse
lawn, in the quaint Priser Theater at
22 S. Main St. and in the large rock
building at 60 S. Main St.
The event begins June 3 and
ends Oct. 7 and, of course, is
held every first Friday in between.
An eclectic mix of bands, from
bluegrass and old-time mountain music, to classic ensembles
and country, play throughout the
evening. There is no admission
charge. Spend the evening in one
of the restaurants, enjoying music
with your supper. Roam Main
Street pausing for a sampling of
each band, or shop at one of the
stores as you enjoy the music.
The merchants will love you for it,
but that is not required.
Be prepared for a crowd. The
event draws throngs of people.
Locals are sure to bump into
old friends they haven’t seen in
a while. If newcomers come at
least twice, on their second visit
they’ll see friends they made at
their first Music on Main, and the
merchants will already be treating
them like homefolk.
There’s chalk in front of one of the
stores for children to draw on the
sidewalk. If you stay late you may
catch fireflies on the Courthouse
lawn.

Monday Night Music at The Crouse House
On any given Monday evening
you can hear mountain music
coming from the Crouse House,
on the grounds of Crouse Park in
Sparta, N.C., two blocks behind
the Courthouse that stands in the
center of town. From the outside,
this farmhouse gives little hint that
it hosts some of the most authentic old-time,
bluegrass, country and gospel
music outside of a concert venue.
There are usually a dozen or so
musicians sitting in a huge circle
playing guitars, banjos, fiddles,
mandolins, a bass and sometimes
maybe the spoons. No two weeks
are exactly the same. These musicians drop in, and guarantee
something a little different
from one week to the next.
The music is easy to listen
to, and the relaxed atmosphere makes you feel as
though you are part of a
big family reunion. Many of
the musicians in the circle
have been playing together for as many as 20
years. Their ages range
from nine to 90.

promises to add a little spice to everyone’s life locally with opportunities for competitive cooks to square
off and for spectators to sample the
chili.
Vickie Moyer, organizer of the
event, said the first event was a
success. “We got a lot of support
from the community and the public,
including festival goers,” she said.
“The day of the event, it took the
judges a while to make their decision, and we had people waiting in
line to try the chili. When they all
came in, it was like a giant party.”
Around 100 people came in
to taste test the chili during the
event, which will be held again
at the old County Administration
Building at 90 S Main St., across
from Donna Shumate’s office and

together with monetary contributions, both public and private. In
1983 the Alleghany Fairgrounds
became a 501(c)(3) not for profit
organization and currently maintains that status. Higgins Agricultural Center—Alleghany Fairgrounds complex is a public use
facility designed and constructed
for the use of the people of Alleghany County for recreational,
educational and profitable endeavors.

469 miles of Virginia and North
Carolina, The Blue Ridge Parkway, has
made an impressive footprint across
these mountains. But what about the
settlers who came before all this?
In the Doughton Park area, at Wildcat
Rock overlook, I used to stare down
the side of the mountain to Caudill
Cabin. The cabin looks like a small
speck in a vast valley surrounded by
lush green mountains. As a child, I
would daydream about the settlers in
the area, not realizing the hardships
that those who chose to live in these
mountains faced.
There are many small cabins along the
parkway that show the struggles of
those who pioneered their way through
the rugged mountain terrain, but none
so tragic as the tale of Basin Cove and
the one cabin left standing in a once
thriving community.
During a recent trip along the Blue
Ridge Parkway, I stopped at Brinegar
Cabin at milepost 239, where I met
Park Ranger, Jackie Sloop, spinning
wool to make yarn and spinning yarns
about the process. She mentioned the
upcoming centennial to remember the
Basin Cove community that was lost
during the 1816 flood. She explained
that the program would be held at

a primitive campground located at
the base of the mountain where part
of the community once stood. I was
thrilled to finally hear stories about
the families that once lived there and
began making plans to make the hike
to Caudill Cabin after the program.
When we reached the bottom of the
mountain on N.C. 18 in Wilkes County,
we turned on to Longbottom Road
until we reached the entrance to the
Blue Ridge Parkway and the gate leading into the primitive campground. It
is a mile-and-a-half hike to the campground on a wide gravel road running
along a wide creek with sparkling clear
water. A wooden bridge to reach the
other side of the creek tells you the
campground is nearby.
There we heard the story of a thriving community that was destroyed,
taking lives and leaving devastation in
its wake as flood waters poured down
the side of the mountain, washing
barns, buildings, houses and even
some residents away.
In the campground, there is a sign that
reads “Basin Cove Trail: 3.3 miles.” As
we began walking, it began to rain.
We began the climb, crossing creeks,
enjoying the green hues of the foliage,
birds chirping and other wildlife living
in the lush forest. Soon the rain had
stopped, and the sun came out shining brightly through the trees.
Along the way, we passed by a stone
wheel from the Basin Cove grist mill
that was covered in green moss and
half buried on the side of the bank
along the creek. A little farther up, we
started to see rock chimneys from
homesteads that had been destroyed
by the flood. The beauty was breath-
taking and answered the question of
why early homesteaders chose such a
remote location for their homes.
The trail leading to the cabin isn’t easy,
requiring hikers to traverse slippery
rocks and climb steep, rocky embankments, but it is worth the effort.
In a clearing, I saw the old cabin I had
seen from a distance. The home of
the Caudill family was built atop rock
pillars, and the musty smell of old
wood was the first thing I noticed as
we walked inside. On the left, a rock
fireplace sits empty, looking as if it
has housed many fires. Pictures of the
Caudill family, the cabin and the Basin
Cove area sit on a shelf along with a
book to sign for those who make the
trip. There are no windows; a simple
wooden floor and ceiling poles span
the room. A likely story tells of the
poles being used for sleeping areas
for the family’s many children.
As we left, I felt a wave of sadness for
the lives lost in Basin Cove and the
community that was destroyed in a
single night.
The trip back seemed much easier and
quicker than the trek up.We began our
hike from the campground at 11am, and
we reached the truck at around 5:00 in
the afternoon. We had crossed creeks
16 times one-way and hiked 9.6 miles.

The Best Place to Find the Perfect Christmas Tree!
T
here is a special pilgrimage that
takes place in Alleghany County
and Sparta, N.C., between the
third week in November until about a
week before Christmas. The Choose
and Cut time of year is a tradition for
many families, and it can become one
for your family, too.
There is something quite wonderful about walking through a field of
Christmas trees for find one that will
be the centerpiece of your holiday.
Families often take a while exploring together and sometimes argue a
little, but that’s the fun of it. Do you
like a fat tree or a slender tree? Is
there a branch at the top just right for
the angel or star? Does it have that
particularly sturdy branch to hold the
toy train you’ve been putting on the
tree since you were a child?
Once you’ve chosen your tree, you
simply tie your ribbon around it, and
a helpful farm hand will come up and
saw it down for you. Just the smell of
freshly cut Fraser fir is worth the trip.
But there’s more.
Children are fascinated by the tree
wrapping machine. Actually, we all
are. The folks at the farm will tie your
wrapped tree onto the roof of your car
while you pick up a cup of hot cider.
When you get home, cut an inch off
the bottom and be sure to keep your
tree watered. With a little loving care,
a fresh-cut tree from the North Carolina mountains will retain its needles
well past the holiday.
This tradition is so much fun. Take a
day to spend here in Alleghany County.
Choose a tree, have some lunch, and
take in the magical sights and sounds
of the season on Main St. in Sparta.
You might even see a
few snowflakes.
Plan your trip for
Thanksgiving weekend, and catch the annual Christmas parade
that Saturday. Your
kids will love the fire
engines, local floats
and Santa’s visit, and
you’ll feel a bit like a
kid again, too.

Thanksgiving, there is always the
Christmas Craft Show that Saturday
at the Alleghany County Fairgrounds
in Sparta, where you can purchase a
handmade gift for someone special
or something just for you. Stop by

County are proud of what they do.
Believe it or not,
Christmas tree farmers work practically
year round to produce
the most beautiful
evergreens possible.
They might get a few
days of breathing easy
in January, but you

trees that wind up at your supermarket, but many tree farms cater
to families and individuals who want
to come and find the perfect tree for
