Please remind your child to bring their ear buds to school on all PARCC testing days!
What can I do as a parent to help my child succeed on the PARCC/MCAS exams?
Most importantly, give them a pep talk and tell them they will do great if they just put in their best effort!
 Have students go to bed early and get a good night’s sleep.

Ensure they eat a good breakfast.

Make sure they attend school and are on time. This is especially true for PARCC test days, as these exams are timed.
If a student arrives after testing has begun he/she will need to wait and take a make-up exam. If they are truly sick,
Masconomet Middle School Newsletter
1
there is make-up days available.

Unless it is an emergency please do not plan to dismiss a student prior to the end of the testing window, which will
be at 10:13 a.m. each day. If they have not completed the test it will be invalidated or once the test is passed in, it
will be scored as is and it will not be beneficial to the student’s score or the school’s overall data. Thank you in
advance for assistance in the area of attendance. It is critical for both the student and the school. However, if a
child becomes ill in the middle of a test we can arrange for a monitored make-up that will allow the student to
finish from the point where the stopped to the end; they will not be able to go back or review any previously
completed work.

Remind them that no electronic devices including cell phones or apple watches are permitted to be with them
during the testing period. If a student is found to have an electronic device with them, we need to contact the
Department of Secondary Education and his/her test will be invalidated.
Masco Excels
Session 3 is now in session. A staff member will wait until students participating in Excels are picked up or a note is sent in
allowing the student to walk or ride their bikes home. As such, any student that is repeatedly not picked up by 4:15 p.m.
may not be able to continue to participate in their activity.
Masco Millions
We have only five weeks left to meet the 1,000,060 page goal. I am issuing a new challenge for both grades,
Grade Level Team Challenge. Which team will submit the most pages read during PARCC testing? Each week,
for the next four weeks, one grade level will be taking PARCC and everyone will have an opportunity to
read. Now, after reading all these pages submit them in Masco Million. We have only 176,097 pages to go to
meet the goal of 1,000,060 pages. Staff don’t forget to log in the pages from the PARCC Testing Manual.
Results: All Team weekly results 10,832 pages and the Grand total: 823,963 pages. Our two trophy winners for
the week are 7 White (2,933) and 8 Red (4,666). Please continue to encourage your students to enter pages read
from their textbooks, short stories, or any other reading you do as a class. These figures represent the numbers
logged in by 3:00 PM Thursday, May 12, 2016.

End of The Year Activities
The Grade 7 Cedardale and Grade 8 Canobie Lake field trips are scheduled for Monday, June 13, 2016.
Grade 8 Events
A Grade 8 Student Council Dance is scheduled for Friday, May 20. The purpose of the dance is to raise funds to start their
high school class monies. The proceeds will be transferred to their 9th grade Class Account as seed monies for their fall
Freshman activities. Student Council members would like students to dress a little nicer than a normal dance, but this is not
a formal event. It is similar to the holiday dance. For example, last year many boys tended to wear either khaki pants or
shorts with a golf shirt, and the girls wore sundresses, skirts and shirts or dress pants and a shirt. The 8th grade students will
vote this coming Friday on whether they prefer either a BBQ and Field Day or and End of the Year Causal Dance and BBQ in
June. More information in next week’s newsletter.
National Honor Society
National Junior Honor Society Induction is scheduled for Monday, June 6th at 6:00 p.m. Letters of invitation will be mailed
home on or before May 19th, 2016.
Promotion Ceremony/Last Day of School
The Grade 8 Promotion Ceremony is scheduled for Friday, June 17rd at 8:30 a.m. in the Field House. The final day of school
for students is scheduled for Tuesday, June 21st with dismissal at 11:30 a.m.
For Planning Purposes: Promotion Ceremony Attire
As you begin to shop with your child, if he/she needs a new outfit for the promotion ceremony, we thought a few
guidelines would be helpful. We ask that students do not wear jeans, casual beach type shorts, or t-shirts. Boys frequently
wear khaki pants or dress shorts with a shirt and tie, however, many boys will also wear a golf shirt. Girls wear a nice skirt
and shirt, dress pants and a shirt or sundress. We will relax the requirements on straps so that girls may wear thin straps or
strapless sundresses, but will enforce, and ask you to help us enforce, that any skirt or dress is the appropriate length and
fit. Thank you in advance for assisting us to make this important event a great day for everyone.
