One way to get involved in the chapter is by serving as a chapter officer. Each chapter
has four official "primary" officers and any number of additional "discretionary" officers.
Elected positions must be filled by individuals who own and ride, or ride on, a HarleyDavidson motorcycle. The Daytona HOG member must be a National HOG member or
associate member, and have been an active Daytona Chapter member in good standing
for one full year, previous to the nomination.
The term of each office shall be one year, and shall run from January 1 to December
31, or the balance of the current election year, or as appointed by the sponsoring dealer,
as defined in the Chapter Handbook issued by the National HOG office.

meetings. 3. Handle all Chapter correspondence. 4. To perform such other duties as fall to
that office.

at each meeting.
Election results: shall be at the November meeting, based on a simple majority vote
for the selected candidates for each specific office. There will be no absentee ballots. All
elected officers shall be vested in January. The newly elected Director shall announce at
the January meeting his or her appointed officers.

If you’re interested in becoming an officer you will need to submit, in writing, your
desire to run for that office for approval by our sponsoring dealership. This needs to be
received by Linda or Lea, email is acceptable, by the October meeting (yes, at the
meeting is fine - but it does need to be in writing).

September 23, 2009 at 5:18 pm the Fall Season began. Come on cool weather!!! It means the busy month
of October is here. October 11th is the Camp Boggy Creek Ride. This year’s ride will be a celebration of
Bruce Rossmeyer. To sign up for the ride go to www.rideforchildren.com . You can also sign up at any of the
Rossmeyer dealerships. Remember it’s for the kids.
Biketoberfest is not far off. We are going to need HOG help again this year. There will be NO parking bikes
this year. We just need help manning the 4 gates at the Beach Street dealer. We need to cover these gates
from 8 am to 7 pm each day. So I have divided them up into two 5 1/2 hour shifts per day per gate. Pay is
$8.00 per hour. Time cards will work just like they did at Bike Week in March of this year. So if you worked in
March you only have to fill out 2 forms that I will supply to you. If you are interested in helping contact me at my email address
[email protected] .
It’s that time of year for the election of Board members. Officer elections are held at the November meeting. The deadline
for Nominations for the four (4) board positions of Director, Asst. Director, Secretary, and Treasurer is the October meeting
held October 31. If you are interested in running for one of the board positions, nominations must be submitted in writing at
either the October meeting or emailed to the nomination committee which is Linda S. [email protected] or
Lea J. [email protected]. It only needs to be a short paragraph of what position you are running for and a little about
yourself. Here is your chance to make a difference in the Chapter.
I have been a member of this chapter for six years and an officer in some capacity for five of those six years. I must tell you
that I will not be running for any officer position next year. In this tough economy my business has demanded more of my time
than it used to. I will still be an active road captain and help out on special events.
Till we ride!!!!

The Great West
We have just returned from an extensive trip out west and I would like to give you some of the highlights and specs.
What we saw and experienced was so impressive, magnificent and extreme that I would like to encourage all of you
to head west. I will try to put this in an “outline” format vs. a narrative, sharing some costs and facts that surprised
me, in a very positive way and hopefully this will encourage some of you to head out.

Total Gas Cost - $650.
Average miles / day 225
Average Saddle time/ day – 6 hours
One final comment on costs, our food was very close to $ 0, it’s simple we had to eat whether home or not. On the fuel expense, consider you
still buy gas at home, so that must be factored in to the gas cost. Finally, I feel the only significant cost of this trip was lodging. This is one bill
you don’t have at home. We stayed at economical motels that ranged from $40.00/night to $100.00/night.
Our average cost per night for lodging was around $75.00/night. Breakfast was almost always included.
So, do some budget planning start saving and GO. Money can also be saved by going 2-up and a little camping can help cut down on the
lodging costs. I am available to answer any questions and offer route ideas.
Treasurers Report – Thumbs up!

Once again the month has proven to be interesting for riding. While the weather stations
all say rain and rides are cancelled or postponed, the rain doesn't come and everyone
stands in their driveways feeling bad. I know I am one those people. Let's hope that the
weather channels get it right and we can get back to some serious riding.
We had to cancel the Road Captain. class as it appeared that most who had not recertified were not going to able to make it. Remember that their certification is good until
December 31. The first Road Captain. training of 2010 has already been scheduled for Sunday January
31. I will be making the announcement at the meetings so everyone can block the date. If you are
interested in becoming a Road Captain, this would be the date. So everyone current and future start
planning for January 31.
I just had my 30,000 mile service done on my '02 Ultra. They found some things that were not on the
check list, front brake pads and I am close to needing a new rear tire. Hope everyone is keeping up on
their service and checking their bike on a regular basis. Some of the things to
check include, brakes, tire wear, cables, lights, air pressure, belt or chain
tightness and wear, grips, clutch and brake lever play; this is not a complete
list but most of these should be checked regularly. The most important thing is Road Captain rideif you are not sure how to check some of these items or need a more

Hello my fellow HOGs,
11,841 That’s how many miles we (Donald and I) racked up on our cross-country motorcycle trip to
the west coast. We left July 21st after Christmas in July and arrived home to Daytona after Labor Day
(53 days). Our last two days were 500 miles each: Mineral Wells, TX to Daytona. It was two long,
grueling days for me. The first morning back home, I had a massive, stiff neck which ran down my
back shoulders. It took me the next two days to unwind, re-energize and lose the stiff neck. Am I
whining? It may sound like it but I have to admit that I would do it every time IF I got to do what I had
just experienced prior. I found out how spectacular our country is; each state different with its own
unique beauty. Did you know that in 1893 when Katharine Lee Bates looked out from the 14,000 foot
summit of Pikes Peak, she was inspired to write the words of the song America the Beautiful. We were there and saw the
same view that Katherine saw, only we rode the 18 miles up the mountains via motorcycle; she went by prairie wagon and
mules. The east view on the summit looks out over the flat plains of Colorado and Katherine was overcome with the beauty
of our country. Oh beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain, for purple mountain majesty, above the fruited
plains. Gosh, some people can write such beautiful words (see picture). When we rode thru our National Parks, I was
thankful our country had the foresight to designate them as such. Yellowstone, Glacier, Yosemite, Sequoia, Arches, Grand
Canyon, Mt. Zion, Bryce, Mount Rushmore, Petrified and Painted
Forests. They all have something unique that must be protected
for our future generations. And no picture or video I saw on the
Grand Canyon came close to how it looked in person and my
trying to describe it to you would be the same. It’s simply
indescribable. So those hard 500 mile days were well worth it for
the incredible country I saw on the previous 51 days. If you’re
looking for a vacation, I highly recommend you try to visit as many
of our National Parks as possible. Donald and I were very blessed
to be able to do this AND I have a few stories to share with you at
our monthly meetings.
Ride safe and enjoy the cooler weather,

SAFETY OFFICER
John DeVito
I cured the straight road sickness I was suffering from. Diane and I are still stuck with two houses, our
Georgia Plantation (he said tongue in cheek) needed some yard work. I rode up on a Monday and
began my chores. I managed to take one day off. The initial plan was to find the road to nowhere,
however, I checked on Parson’s Branch Road and found it open. This is a gravel mountain road with
12 water crossings. It starts just past the visitor’s center in Cades Cove, Tennessee. The 8-mile dirt
road ends in the middle of Deals Gap.
You may have guessed I rode my Ultra on the 500 plus mile trip to our house. This is not the bike to
take off road; even Dirty Harry said “a man has got to know his limitations.” The course book used in
the MSF’s basic class the talks about the oval of safety. You always want a margin of safety. Three
things in the oval of safety that affect your margin of safety are: 1) your capabilities and limitations, 2)
the capabilities and limitations of your motorcycle, 3) roadway and traffic conditions. With this in mind, I left the Ultra home and chose
Diane’s dual sport bike. It is smaller, lighter but not a comfortable as the Ultra. Nonetheless, I was off. I headed north on US 129, as I
crossed Blood Mountain the rain started and it rained on and off all day. Cades Cove is a great place to spend the day but not on a bike.
Traffic is slow and most riders will become frustrated with its pace. If you do ride there, plan to stop often. Parson’s Brach Road was
everything I hoped for in an off road rode and very challenging. I guess the third time really is a charm.
A fourth rider lost his life on Deals Gap this week, six others died on Hell Bender 28. This makes ten deaths this year on a road that’s
supposed to be a fun ride. Why must people ride over their limit? No one gets a trophy or cash prize for being the fastest to do the dragon.
Every time you ride, stay within your margin of safety.
Due to deadlines this is being written prior to Biketoberfest, I can only hope the Drill Teams Expo and Boggy Creek ride for the children
came off a success. I will let you know next month along with how the economy affects Biketoberfest.
Please join me in welcoming Dave Lawson as the Drill Team’s newest member. After several months of trying out he was voted on the
team. Now his work begins, it’s time to learn the drill, work on timing and spacing. Good Luck to the new Dave. While I’m on the topic of
the Drill Team, we are always looking for new members. Would you like to improve your riding skills? Do you like to show off on your
bike? If so come on out and play with us, you could get the bug. Next, how about a new Safety Officer, any takers? Somebody once told
me when you reach 60 years of age there are few firsts left in your life to accomplish. To this I say, bologna! I had three firsts in one day. I
rode the Dragon for the first time in the rain (not recommended for the faint of heart), I rode it on a dual sport (a non-Harley), and I finally
found Parsons Branch Road. The road to nowhere is next. Maybe I will ride back up to the
mountains this week, love those twisties. What a great country we live in, the leaf season is
fast approaching. Now get out there and ride but
please ride safe.
