We have just returned from our annual summer ride. This year we decided to go to one of my childhood fantasy locations Yellowknife, North
West Territory, Canada. Doesn‘t
the name just beg for exploration?
We looked for Sergeant Preston
and Nannook of the North and to
our regret they were nowhere to be
found. After 2 months and 11,000
miles, we arrived home to the fall
weather bringing with it optimal
bike riding in our sunny Florida.
On the return home, we met up with some fellow Daytona HOGs in Hiawassee, GA to attend the
Georgia State Rally and help one of our members, Frank Boorn, celebrate his 1 million documented miles on a Harley Davidson. His achievement was so celebrated by the community of
Hiawassee that you thought it was the ―Frank Boorn Rally‖ not the ―Georgia State Rally‖. Congratulations Frank!
Now, on to some Chapter business. This is the time of year that we have the opportunity to elect
our four (4) Primary Officers (all other positions are appointed). Those positions are:
Director
Assistant Director
Treasurer
Secretary
Any member who is interested in running for any of these positions must submit a letter to Will
Rossmeyer, V.P. at Destinations Daytona stating your reasons and qualifications for running.
You have until next month‘s meeting (remember it was moved to October, 29th) to submit your
letter of interest and the elections will be held at the November meeting. This is your club; put
YOUR mark on it!
Clue #2 in the mystery identity of ―Easy Writer‖. He owns more V-Rods than most Harley Dealers yet he rides a Road Glide

Our Hearts Are In Boggy Creek
It was early when we left the Beach Street parking lot. Can you believe that a dozen of us left town before
5:00 a.m. and headed for Eustis. Why? Well we would have stayed up all night if we had to just to keep our
volunteer commitment to help out at Camp Boggy Creek. More than 250 bicyclists who rode the event rode
either a 60, 40 or 10 mile run. Thanks to our Road Captain‘s who rode their Harley‘s along the lengthy paths
made certain everyone stayed safe. Thanks to our other HOG volunteers who worked doing registration, parking lot management and setting up equipment.
Road Captains delivered water within the sixty mile run to keep all riders (bicyclists/ motorcyclists) and volunteers well hydrated.
The temperatures hit mid-90‘s and the sun was as bright as ever. The riders left early enough to avoid the late morning or early
afternoon heat as all returned unharmed, but the challenging ride left many exhausted at the finish. It was interesting to learn a
little more about bicyclists who have a similar passion to ride. These folks may ride differently than we do, but there were a lot
of similarities too.
They ride in the cold, they ride in the heat. They ride to feed their spiritual and emotional needs and they spend almost as
much paying for their carbonized ponies as we do for our iron horses. It was enlightening to see the ―connection‖ among them,
just like ours. To have such a passion for a sport, just like ours that no matter how hot, how cold or otherwise, they ride and
ride, just like us. They spend stupid amounts of money on riding gear, and accessories, just like us. And can you believe that
bicycles cost as much as $20,000 or more, just like us. But not only did the sport and passion of riding bring us all together that
day, it was also those amazing kids who spend time at Camp Boggy Creek. They (the kids) were what brought us all together
that day.
October 22nd Meetings at Houligans has been moved to the 29th of October.

Biketoberfest
Hope everyone is ready for BiketoberF. Not sure if anyone knows how the name BiketoberFest came
about. This being the 19th year there is an interesting tale about how the name BiketoberFest became a
reality.
The Chamber of Commerce had a contest to name their fall motorcycle gathering. I am not sure what it
was called before this, but hundreds of entries were submitted. It was narrowed down to five and BiketoberFest was
chosen.
And now the rest of the story;
The person who submitted the name BiketoberFest was a local resident, how fitting. He had lived in New Smyrna his
whole life, graduated from New Smyrna High, married and raised a family and still resides in New Smyrna.
So why all the info? You may know him as Randy Russell, Parts Manager at New Smyrna Harley.
And now you know the rest of the story.
Ride Safe,
Greg
CLUB ELECTIONS HAVE ARRIVED
Fellow HOG members, it‘s time again for the annual officer elections and time for all of us to exercise our
voice during the selection process for 2012. Starting early (a few months before year end) is important
and allows time for newly appointed officers to become familiar with the duties of their respective positions before the term officially begins. Serving for a local HOG chapter is also a lot of fun with opportunities including meeting many new people and making good friends at the same time we‘re doing what we‘re here to do,
RIDE. I‘ve enjoyed my tenure and would encourage anyone to throw their name in the hat too.
Lately, I haven‘t been able to get in as many rides as I would like, but Biketoberfest, October 13-16, is coming and I for
one am going to redouble my efforts to get out there. The cooling down of mid-day heat makes this time of year perfect
for longer rides. Hope to see you on one soon, maybe a local weekend ride or maybe Destin at the Florida HOG Rally.

LADIES OF HARLEY INVITATION
I have made reservations for our GETTING-TO-KNOW-YOU ―BETTER‖ party. Our hope is to get as
many women as possible to join in so we can spend some relaxing time together, not on bikes and yup
- not with our hubbies.
If you missed the last two membership meeting (in August /September at Houligan‘s) then you missed
out on an open invitation to join LOH in November and party. More than a dozen women have already
signed up and that is why I am sending out this letter. First, to ensure that the lady members who missed our meetings
became aware of our plan to have an overnight, and second to share more information on the planned event now that
details are complete.
The date of our event is November 19th. The plan is to leave as a group after our November 19th HOG membership
meeting. Some of us will be staying right at Houligan‘s for a light lunch before we go to the hotel. You can come by bike
or car, you can even be dropped off at the hotel if you wish. It is your decision. You will be able to check in anytime after 2 p.m. Reservations need to be made at THE HAWAIIN INN located in the heart of Daytona Beach. We have been
given a great deal on an overnight stay. The moderate sized room easily accommodates 2 by having two queen size
beds. When you call to make your reservation(s) mention ―Daytona Beach‖ Ladies of Harley as the group booking
name. The cost of the room is only $59, quite affordable if you are staying by yourself. If you are co-sharing a room, the
cost would be $30ish each. But one person will need to secure the room by calling 1-800-922-3023 using a credit card
and pay the $59 plus tax. You can get reimbursed from your roommate later on. Until you make the call, you will not
have a room reserved.
Keep in mind that you will not be given the same rate as mentioned above if you book late. So, if you want to keep us all
together in one location, and get the great deal, I suggest you book early. The rooms are located facing the ocean and
all have balconies. Dinner reservations have also been made with a pre-dinner commitment for 6:30 p.m. for a Happy
Hour. The restaurant will have a few wonderful surprises for all of us as entertainment is being hired. You really don‘t
want to miss out on this ―one of a kind‖ experience.
Although the meal will cost $35.00 per person (we were given a discount), it will be well worth it especially because of
the entertainment. There are many food selections offered. All I can say is COME DRESSED for dinner in HAWIAAN
attire. Enough said… During the afternoon before our evening dinner, we hope to walk along the beach and possibly
drink lightly during the afternoon. BYOB as our balcony areas will serve as a great get together spot. I have also reserved a suit e (room) so we can gather inside together, if the weather if nasty . I am requesting that any/all interested
ladies RSVP me so I can keep count of the rooms and add more if we need them. I would also have to add to our dinner
reservation numbers. Thanks everyone.

DECEMBER
Daytona HOG Christmas Party on December 17, 2011 at the Speedway
Not an overnighter, but we do have a morning after.
The Daytona HOG at Sturgis Bike Week 2011
One can really appreciate belonging to a group when you
travel almost 2000 miles and know people when you arrive. Thanks
to Don and Linda Seeley, every Daytona HOG member who was
going to Sturgis had the names and numbers of the others that were
going to Sturgis.
Dave Sullivan and I arrived on Sunday, got checked in and rode the motorcycle to downtown Sturgis only to
hear people yelling hellos and our names. By Monday we were on a RIDE with about 20 other Daytona HOG members –
led by Dan Hopkins – thank you Dan. Now even though we were all Daytona HOG members, some were people we had
ridden with before, some very little and some not at all. You see we had people who had been members for years and
brand new members. It did not matter- our ―click-―was Ride and Have Fun! And we did.
Now you have to realize that Florida is sort of flat and straight and Sturgis, South Dakota and the surrounding areas
may be the Black Hills, but they certainly felt like mountains.
(Continued on page 7)
Page 7
D AY TO N A HOGC AL L
Continued from page 6
Now we had riders that had been riding for a long time and riders
that had only ridden for a very short time and all those in between. Dan led the pack and it became noticeable that curves and
hills were not everyone‘s strong points, but ―the guys encouraged
the riders that were slower and gave then pointers‖ and you could
see them getting better.
YOU GO GUYS!
I guess the point to my story is that if you are a Daytona HOG
member, you can go on whatever rides your schedule allows you to
go on and still feel like part of the group. The only ―click‖ is being
a Daytona HOG member – or with a member- or friends of a member. We just like to ride and have fun and we did!
Many thanks to Dan & Lisa Hopkins for the rides and the cinnamon rolls, to Linda and Don Seeley for making sure that
everyone had the information to be able to get together (and they did this while they were on vacation!), and to John &
Sue Comte, Leo and Sam Leonard, Tina & John Davis, Stan, Dave, June, Chuck, Dave Sullivan, Jim & Laura Clark,
Rose & Dan Nieminen, Vern Krammer, the couple from Utah, and Will Rossmeyer (he came and had breakfast with us
one morning) and to the many others that helped make the 2011 Sturgis Bike Week fun and memorable experience!
We are so proud to honor Frank Boorn, a Daytona Beach H.O.G. member, for his
incredible achievement of riding 1,000,000 Harley documented miles.
Frank started riding Harleys
in 1993 and has bought 36 bikes
to date with 340 services and
180 tires along the way.
And from what we hear, Frank
isn’t stopping at 1 million miles.
He plans to continue to ride,
ride, ride.
Ride Safe our friend.

Easy Writer:
Bikers and Tee-Shirts – A Natural Fit
What is it about bikers and Tee-Shirts? Worldwide last year 2 billion Tee-Shirts were sold, and I'd have to guess 3
billion of them were bought by bikers, in fact, I'm certain that at least half of them are hiding out in my house!
It's all part of the "uniform." If I bet you 10 bucks to guess within five how many are in your collection, would you take
the bet? Could you even come close?
Easy Writer is starting to think that they must reproduce by themselves. They're everywhere -- in closets, stuffed in
dressers, stuck in saddlebags, tagging along in gym bags for those all-too-occasional workouts and, of course, a
handful always at the ready in the garage to give their lives in selfless sacrifice to mop up an unexpected oil spill.
If you're like me, they're all sorted and prioritized. You know -- "the rotation." There are the "really good shirts‖ that
have sentimental meaning and are reserved for special occasions, the ―run-of-the-mill shirts‖ that are for everyday
wear, and those at the bottom of the pecking order, typically given out as freebies by insurance companies at Bike
Week. But no matter what the case, when Mrs. Easy insists it's time to "thin the herd," they all suddenly take on
some special status that, I insist, places their value at just this side of the Mona Lisa.
October is going to be a busy month, highlighted by the Boggy Creek ride, Biketoberfest and the Florida State HOG
Rally. And each means another tee-shirt, or two, or ten gets added to the pile. You can't visit a dealership, attend a
rally or ride a poker run without picking up another valuable souvenir.
I spent several hours researching the history of the biker tee. Hard as it is to believe, the definitive history of the biker
tee either hasn't yet been written or there is a global conspiracy that makes it the only piece of information that isn't
on-line. But here are some clues...
The humble garment first came to prominence shortly after the turn of the century
(that's the 20th Century) – a favorite of ―swabbies‖ in the U.S. Navy.
I said ―humble garment‖ because ―Tee-Shirt‖ wasn't recognized as an official word until
1920, when it was added to Webster's dictionary.
What became the first modern Tee-Shirt was developed by Jockey Corp. in 1932, at
the request of the University of Southern California Trojans football team – essentially a
sweat sponge under the game jersey.
By World War II, tank tops were commonplace in the Army. As the war ended, millions
of boys went back home elevating the Tee-Shirt's role to its current status, as an essential part of the male wardrobe.

The Smithsonian museum
has one of the oldest printed
T-shirts on record in its collection: a campaign shirt for
New York Gov. Thomas
Dewey's 1948 presidential
campaign -- "Dew it with
Dewey."
So... what's the bad-boy biker connection? Best that I can tell, in 1950, The Outlaws
motorcycle club is said to have placed their logo on Tee-Shirts. Although never
filmed on his bike, in 1955, James Dean brought his Tee-Shirt and a youthful, antiestablishment swagger to the big screen in Rebel without a Cause, followed by Peter
Fonda, who took to the highway in Easy Rider.
Not to be upstaged, women made Tee-Shirts their own symbol of youth and rebellion during the sexual revolution of the 1960s
and 1970s. Who could forget the teasing, anatomy-revealing ―tah-tee‖ of Jacqueline Bisset in The Deep.
And since the 1970s, I'm told that women in tight white tees have been lining up in bars across the country to be cheered by
appreciative audiences as they are doused with less than tepid water. Although I've never actually seen that happen, I understand it's fairly popular.
With acid-induced tie-dyed shirts in the '60s and the refinement of screen printing techniques, the tee became a much more
colorful character – attaining is place as standard fare to commemorate large gatherings and creating new revenue streams for
rock bands.
Although undocumented, until now that is, at the intersection of all those components – cool guys on hot wheels, hot ladies
doused with cold water, bars and music – we've created a tradition that is now part of the culture.
Along with a crowded closet.
Until next time: Ride in style, and Ride Easy!

Having a Successful Ride – Learning From My Mistakes!
Last I wrote, I was reflecting on what would have been the right time to put on rain gear during the ride to Capt Hiram's.
Most recently, on September 6th, I met up with Lou Nardi at the Boston Coffee House in Deland for our breakfast ride to Sterling‘s in Astor. The morning weather started out looking promising for the ride when we left Deland. But, on our way past
Deleon Springs the sky looked ominous. Rain was falling dead ahead. Lou pulled to the side and thought about donning his
rain gear but changed his mind and we continued on into the rain. We pulled into the gas station at Barberville, and the rain
stopped – well, almost stopped. It was that ―on and off‖ rain. I was thinking about pulling my rain gear out. But it was hot and I
knew I‘d melt inside that waterproof garment. And besides, it was nicely folded and packed in my saddle bag. So, I decided to
ride on, but Lou did put on his rain jacket. We rode in and out of rain on our way to the Astor pick-up point. Of course, I blew
right on by the rendezvous point; Lou had to chase me down. We went back to sit in the drizzle where we discovered no others
waiting. Lou made a call to inquire about the hold up, and that is when we found out the ride had been cancelled due to rain.
Who‘d of thought to call prior to embarking on the ride? Certainly not me, but I did file that thought away for future reference.
Being the tough guys that Lou and I are, we proceeded on to breakfast, me still without rain gear. I have no idea why I bought
the rain gear except that it was on sale.
That brings me to my next ride. Yes, the 9-11 Memorial run sponsored by the Palm Coast Red Knights. It was a
beautiful Sunday morning when I started out from Deland on my way to Beach Street HD. I timed it perfectly to arrive by 1000
only to find nary a soul there. I just thought the group left a bit early and that I‘d meet up with them at the Destination pick-up
point. But, I had a funny feeling about that thought. Then it dawned on me that they didn‘t leave early. They left right on time –
0900! So, there I was, late! I was not going home to face Theresa and tell her that I didn‘t pay close enough attention to the
provided information, again. I try not to share my shortcomings with her because she has one of those minds that never forget.
Maybe you don‘t know what I‘m talking about, and if so, consider yourself lucky. To make matters worse, I even had a printed
copy of the ride schedule with me! So I skipped the idea of going to the pick-up point and headed directly to the ride. Well, I
did make it in plenty of time for the start, parked my bike as directed in the sea of motorcycles and went to look for anybody that
I knew from our group. Funny how we all look alike in a crowd like that! Eventually I found somebody I knew. I thought that
maybe I would move my bike to be up with them, but soon realized that was not happening because of the staging. I also
realized I was near the end of the line. ―My‖ ride started much later than the leading riders by the time my row got out on the
road. But, from there I have to admit, it was a wonderful ride. People lined the shoulder of the roads throughout the ride, cars
waited on side streets and oncoming traffic stopped as we rode past. I felt waves of emotions passing through me at various
times when I thought of the significance of the ride I was part of. The hundreds of spectators were waiving and some with flags
waited patiently for us to ride past as though we were making some kind of difference in their lives. Unity! That must be it I
thought. We are all in this together, and they were letting us know they supported us and the cause we were riding for. I‘m
proud to be an American in America and so are they.
So, what did I learn from these rides? 1.) I‘ll probably never take my rain gear out and put it on. 2.) If the weather looks
iffy, call ahead to confirm the ride is still on. And… 3.) Check the plan and pay attention to the start time, it could be the
difference of riding with friends. — James Hermann
