Our speaker for the weekend will be Pat
Speth where she will give lectures on Five
Inch is a Cinch and Fabulous Nickel
Borders. We will also have workshops
given by Pat and local teachers. See further
details elsewhere in the newsletter.
We are working out details on venders for
this meeting so come prepared to shop.
This is going to be a special meeting, one
that you do not want to miss. If you have
pictures and projects from your years at
the KQO meetings bring them to share.
I am looking forward to this meeting and I
do hope you will make plans to attend.

KQO Summer Board Meeting

President Linda Headings called the meeting to order at 12:50 pm. Minutes were sent to the board members
earlier.
Kansas Quilters Organization 2
Motion: Debbie Coddington made the motion to accept the minutes of the last board meeting and
general meeting. Tony Munoz seconded. Motion passes.
Treasurer, Natalie Hutchison, gave a report on the financial status of KQO. A complete report is attached to the
minutes. Overall total as of July 18, 2009 is $8,772.34.

Discussion was held on future local teacher possibilities for Pam Calhoun to contact. Great Bend was
mentioned as a future location site.
Finance
There is no tax record with the IRS since 2003. We have records that we filed but it was discovered that we
have a wrong EIN (employee income number). Natalie Hutchison will look into this matter.
There was no report from Junelle Hills presented.
Public Relations
Delores Chambers is conducting a survey with past members to get feedback on why they are no longer KQO
members. She will bring back to future meetings.
Motion; Tony Munoz made the motion for treasurer, Natalie Hutchison, to check organizations AQS
(American Quilters Society), NQA (National Quilters Association), and the Heartland Network about
joining their organizations; if these fees are $25 or below, than the treasurer may join these organizations
for KQO. Pat Walters seconded. Motion passed.
By Laws
Doris Santee and committee gave a report on updating the procedures of KQO. Pamela Hill will continue
updating and report at the next meeting.

Come Celebrate 25 Years of KQO!
KQO Celebrates 25 years!
From the first brilliant idea to the first organizational grouping and beginning with the first
state meeting in the fall of 1984, Kansas Quilters Organization has been a labor of love and
friendship for more people than can be named. Some were in our group for a meeting, a
season, a decade, or for the long haul. Each person filled a need, caused a smile, or helped far
more than required. We all have many memories of times past, and now you’re being asked
to share those thoughts and feelings with all of us. Our web master is designing a memory
wall that will remain on the website for all of us to re-live some of our KQO times. The
instructions will be simple, and it will be fun to see how important some of our best shared
memories are to others. Please consider contributing to the memory wall. Old friends are the
best friends.

2009 Fall Meeting
Come and join the fun in Concordia. Our national speaker is Pat Speth of Nickel Quilt fame.
In case you are not familiar with Nickel quilts the block is designed to use 5” squares or pairs of
like squares to create the block. Several years ago she lectured in Wichita. Her quilts are great.
She will be teaching three classes in Concordia. Sign up for your favorite or more. We will
also have classes on Friday from 4 other talented quilters from Kansas and Oklahoma. Jeannie
Poore will be teaching Golden Spools. The pattern is great. We were able to see the quilt in
McPherson. Jane Buckley will be improving your machine skills with Thread Painting. Many if
you have requested this class. I hope you are able to attend. Jeannine Bryan will be teaching
the 9-patch wonder. It is amazing the different looks you can get by slicing up a 9-patch. Sue
Roy will be bringing us the giant wedding ring. It is a timeless pattern.
We look forward to seeing many of our quilting friends from past years. If it has been awhile
since you joined us, come celebrate in Concordia with us. As you know KQO is celebrating 25
years of quilting.

Featured Quilt Artist
Pat Speth
Pat Speth began quilting in 1988 when she purchased a wool quilt batting
from her Grandmother's auction. "I checked out a stack of quilt books from
the library and fell in love with the patterns and designs. I knew I could
not stop with just one quilt."
Pat started working with 5 inch squares as a basis for her quiltmaking in
1993 after attending her first retreat. She was asked to do a program for
her guild in 1997 using the 5" squares, which gave her the push to explore
new uses and techniques for working with the squares. Pat, while working a
full time job, started on the book, Nickel Quilts in 1998 and was able to
have it ready for the publishers in June 2001.
She loves teaching the methods for working with the 5" squares, and sharing
her quilts with others. After juggling her full time job and her quilting
for many years, Pat moved into a full time quilting career in July 2003. "I
have found my passion in life, and I can't imagine doing anything else."
Pat is currently working on her line of individual patterns, a Block of the
Month Quilt, and her fourth book. Her most recent book, Amazing Nickel
Quilts, was released on October 1, 2008 and is available for purchase
through this website or at your local quilt shop.
When she is not quilting (a rare and odd occurrence) Pat enjoys traveling
with her two webmasters and children, Ray and Roxie, who keep her from
getting lost in foreign lands.
Block Drawing
Pat has provided us a pattern called Prairie Winds. This pieced
block should measure 12-½ inches square un-finished.
Remember to attach your name on two pieces of paper to each
block you make. For each block you turn in for the drawing you
get one chance to win a group of blocks.

Jeannine Bryan
I grew up in rural Sedgwick County, Kansas, and am a third-generation
quilter. I learned to sew when I was old enough to sit at a sewing machine.
Through 4-H and school, I soon learned to make most of my own clothing. I
made my first attempt at quilting at age eleven, but did not attempt again
until after marriage. That was only a few blocks (I now know it was a very
difficult pattern). Along with marriage and a move to Cowley County,
going back to college, teaching school, and raising two children, I always maintained an interest
in sewing and other forms of needlework.
In the mid-70’s, along with the renewed national interest in quilting, and becoming more
interested in the quilts my mother made, I decided to take a basic quilting workshop from Dava
Carrell of Winfield. Another workshop from Jan Sowder and I was hooked! Now thirty years
later, I can’t remember the number of workshops I have attended or the yards of quilt fabric I
have purchased! I have six grandchildren and four siblings, as well as my two grown children,
that enjoy being recipients of my quilts.
I am a member of the Walnut Valley Quilters Guild and the Prairie Quilt Guild. I have
served two terms on the board of KQO. I always enjoy attending the KQO meetings and
Golden Oldies in the summer and visiting with the many friends I have made across the state. I
also belong to a small quilting bee group and sew weekly with a group of ladies at church. This
year I am a co-chair of our guild’s charity quilt project.
Now that I am retired after twenty-seven years of teaching, I enjoy having the time to
read, travel, and working on my quilting.
Even though I love looking at the art quilts and very detailed designs, I find that I enjoy
making simple designs that look more complex. Because I taught beginning sewing in school, I
know how gratifying it can be to make something without many problems, yet looks great.
Therefore, I like to find designs that a beginner can make, or something very easy for a quick
project. Scrappy quilts in subdued colors are my favorite, but am learning to branch out and try
new colors--grandkids like the wild ones!
NINE-PATCH WONDER
An easy to make block using two, three, or scrappy colors. Great for
charm packs.
The block is a simple 9-patch that is then cut in half—both directions,
then rearranged to form the basic block.
If using just two or three colors, quick method techniques can be used
to construct the 9-patches. Two colors give a chain effect across the
quilt and three colors will show pinwheel shapes.
Nine-patch squares can be cut any size. Finished block size will be approximately 1 ½” smaller
than cut patch size x 3.

Since the corner blocks will not be cut, they are a good place to feature large prints, florals, or
conversation prints. Centers should be the same fabric, or fabrics in the same color family.
Borders can be added. On my sample quilt I used a 2 ½” inner border and a 6” outer border.
Using a 3 x 4 finished block setting, and starting with 5” squares, finished quilt measured 52” x
66”. (I used 2 ½ charm packs for this size.)
You can vary quilt size by increasing or decreasing number of blocks, or
using larger or smaller starting squares.
This block is also called Split Nine-patch, Fractured Nine-patch,
Disappearing Nine-patch, Tossed Nine-Patch, etc.
A VERY SIMPLE QUILT FOR A BEGINNER OR FOR A
FAST AND EASY PROJECT.
Jane Buckley
Jane Buckley holds a B.S. degree in Education from Rutgers University.
She taught Home Economics and related subjects in New Jersey for nine
years before moving to Minneapolis, MN, St. Louis, MO, and finally to
Topeka in 1971. She has three grown children and four grandchildren.
Jane has been quilting since 1979 and upon retiring from the family business
she began teaching quilting classes in 1994. She has been very active in tow
local area quilt guilds, is a past president of the Kansas Capital Quilters Guild
and the Heartland Quilt Network Group. She is also a member of the Kansas
Quilters Organization.
Her enthusiasm, sense of humor, and excitement about quilting and quilt guilds will entertain
and inform you.
Thread Painting

Jeanne Poore
Jeanne has been a KQO member for 20+ years. She is an international
quilt instructor, lecturer, fabric designer for Marcus Brothers Textiles,
pattern designer and author. She also judges quilt shows. Being an
active member is numerous quilting organizations and part time
employee of Prairie Point Quilt Shop keeps her busy. She has designed
the in house block-of- the- month pattern series for the shop starting the
8th year this September. She enjoys redrafting and making old fashion
traditional patterns using lots of fabric—the more the better. Best of all
she really enjoys sharing her quilts and instructing quiltmaking.
Kansas Golden Spools
Bold sunflower theme fabric was used to create this vibrate,
colorful spool quilt. Learn how to create these blocks with easy
machine piecing techniques and helpful tools. You will get a lot of
piecing done in class with the precutting instructions provided.
Supply List
Sample quilt-80” X 94”
Do you like dark, bright, pastel or particular time specific fabrics? Decide on 2 of your favorite fabric colors.
Precutting units will allow for more time stitching and arranging the pieces during our class. Choose a variety
of your color combination—reds and blacks; blues and reds; green and purple; pink and grey; blue and yellow;
etc. Otherwise 8 to 12 different red prints and 8 to 12 different black prints.
These are for piecing the block units.
The theme fabric should be a larger scale print or tone on tone for the inner and outer border and binding that
will frame all of your small prints.
Fabric requirements:
Theme fabric (see above) – 3 3/8 yards
Background - 2 ¼ yards
(this should be a light solid or tone on tone that reads solid or very small print that reads solid that will contrast
with your theme fabric and the 2 other color families of fabrics you have chosen)
Color #1 – total of at least 4 yards (minimum 1/3 yard of each fabric)
Color #2 – total of at least 4 yards (minimum 1/3 yard of each fabric)
(see above – for the best scrappy look choose 8 or more of each color—with dots, swirls, small prints, textures,
etc.)
Backing – Wide fabric- 3 yards
45” wide fabric – pieced horizontally – 7 ½ yards
Batting – Queen size

Cotton neutral thread and prewound bobbins
Good fabric scissors
Rotary cutter with sharp blade and mat
Rulers – 6” X 12” or 24”, 6 or 6 ½” square helpful, 12 ½” square or 15 ½”
Triangles on a Roll ™ 3 ½” finished size (I will have the paper with enough units for the
project for $5.00). I will have additional full roll if you wish to purchase them.
Basic sewing kit
Design unit (this can be a piece of batting, flannel or flannel backed tablecloth)
Plastic bags for block units
Precutting Instructions
1. Background fabric: Cut 32 squares 9”.
2. Your theme fabric is for borders and binding. You will cut these after you have pieced the blocks.
3. Color #1—(at least 8 different fabrics in the color) – Cut 2 squares 9” from each of the 8 fabrics. If you
selected more pieces (9, 10 or more) you will need only a total of 15 squares 9”, so you may choose the ones
you like most.
Cut strips 2 ¼” of each color. I suggest a 10 to 12” strips at least. Again, you may use many more of this
color
and cut strips to get a larger variety of combinations.
4. Color #2—(at least 8 different fabrics in the color) – Cut 2 square 9” from each of the 8 fabrics. If you

Sue Roy
Sue Roy lives in Newkirk, OK with her husband, Don. She has two adult
boys.
Jake is a manager at Hideaway Pizza in Stillwater. David is attending OSU
(Oklahoma State University) and getting a double major in Mechanical
Engineering and Aerospace Engineering.
Sue's quilting began when she was in 4-H and about 11 years old. Her Mom
was worried that she would become bored in the summer. A log cabin quilt
was started and still remains to be quilted. Later in High School years two quilt tops were
completed to be used in college. Those also need quilting. While living in Salina, KS her
quilting career resumed. A class for a Irish Chain with Dava Caroll restarted interest.
Being president of Silver Needles (in Salina); PAQG (Pioneer Area Quilt Guild, Ponca City,
OK); P.M. Patches & Pieces Quilt Guild (Ponca City); OQSO (Oklahoma Quilter's State
Organization) have been some of her accomplishments. She has been an active member of
Walnut Valley Quilt Guild, KQO, & Newkirk Crazy Quilters. She has been both to Paducah
and Houston for their National Quilt Shows.
Teaching abilities have been developed most recently by starting a 6th year of classes at Pioneer
Area School of Technology in Ponca City, OK. Oklahoma, Kansas, and Arkansas have been
states in which she has given talks and workshops on Foundation Paper Piecing; Romance of
the Wedding Ring (accompanied by a workshop in the Giant Wedding Ring); Miniature Quilts;
and Quilting with Children.
Of all the needle crafts, only Tatting runs a close second to quilting in Sue's life.
Sue will be teaching the Giant Wedding Ring!
