The Piece and Plenty Quilt Guild was organized in 1986 to provide a fellowship for those interested in the
preservation and sharing of the art of quilting and to encourage community awareness of quilting and related
areas.
A letter from our President:
Happy New Year, quilters!
2014!!! A new year with new quilts in our future! Have you made any
quilting resolutions? I reached my goal last year—I finished a bed
quilt for each of my 3 daughters. They happily received them at
Christmas, the first time in 2 years my entire family has been together.
We had a great time, but after all the cooking, eating, and celebrating,
I’m ready for things to calm down a bit and get back to sewing. Do
you have a 2014 goal—to finish UFOs? To make Christmas bed
quilts? To finally enter our Winter Challenge? I’m still considering
this one…
A look back at 2013:
Thanks to chair Yvonne Meloy, our guild really pulled together and
worked very hard to present a great quilt show this year after the devastating loss of co-chair, Karen Lyman. We also fondly remember
Sherrel Bolon and Belinda Doyle.
We had many classes for all skill levels in 2013. I took FOUR
classes, and although I’ve been quilting for years, I learned a few new
things. Thanks to VP-Programs, Janet Rankin for organizing everything. If you didn’t take a class in 2013, make a point to do so in 2014.
Now what? We start all over again! At the Jan. 9 we’ll hear form
Kathy Stack, our new VP-Programs, about all the great programs and
classes coming up in 2014. Kate Howell, VP-Membership, will have
our 2014 yearbooks ready to pick up. Our first class—Rail Fence for
Beginners, is scheduled for Jan 18. Marilyn Fox, chair of Karen’s
10,000 Inches, has already scheduled 2 work days for baby quilts, Jan
15 and 29 at the First Baptist Church. Brenda Morton and her committed will soon start work on construction of a chance quilt for our next
quilt show. (The date is yet to be determined. I am looking for a person to chair the show.)
Contact an officer if you have suggestions, want to be on a committee, or want to start and interest group. We encourage you to get involved with the guild. You’ll make new friends and learn more about
quilting.

Workshop Sign-ups

Are Being Taken Now
Sign-ups for all workshops are
being taken now. Guild members
will have first chance to take our
classes. 2 months before the date
of the class sign-ups will be open
for non-guild members. If you
have a friend that would like to
take the class we can put that
name on a list and contact them
at that 2 month point.
We have many wonderful classes
and the space is limited. So, take
a look at your program and
choose the classes you want to
take then, contact Yvonne Meloy.
Please remember, your space for
class is not confirmed until you
have paid for the class. This payment is non-refundable.
Use both of these fabric to make a
quilt with a perimeter totaling 144
inches or less.
If you need fabric, contact a guild member
that would be willing to share. For further
questions contact Cindy Felts.
We hope that all of you are busy using these 2
fabrics to create an interesting quilt. It is especially important this year to have a wonderful
display of our guilds
creativity and talents.
March meeting is also our “Bring a Guest”
month. Let’s give our guests a reason to want
to join our fun.
Orphan Block Auction
February 5, 2014
Have you made a sample block before you made the real things? Have been part of an
exchange and had a left over? This is a great time to find a home for these blocks. At our
February meeting we will be having an Orphan Block Auction. Sharon Johnson has accepted
the position of “Auctioneer”. Bring your blocks, bring your money, bring your competitive
spirit. You could go home with some really cool blocks. And, you are guaranteed to have a
lot of laughs and a lot of FUN.
Bring a Guest
March 5, 2014
March meeting is also our “Bring a Guest” month.
For every guest you bring your name will be put into a drawing for a nice door
prize. If your guest joins the guild your name will be entered again.

Improvisational Log Cabin

Cynthia Felts learned to sew on her grandmother’s treadle sewing machine. She hand-stitched a doll quilt at age 7 and made clothing and
home decorating items for many years before taking up quilting seriously in the mid-1990’s. Her quilts have been displayed at the AQS Quilt
Shows in Paducah and Des Moines, and “Danica’s Pink Butterfly Quilt”
appeared in American Quilter magazine. Cynthia’s main quilting influence has been Gwen Marston; she attended Gwen’s final Beaver Island
Quilt Retreat in Michigan in 2013. She pieces by machine and quilts on
her home sewing machine and by hand. Cynthia was previously a newspaper reporter and editor, a stay-at-home mother, and a junior high English teacher. She considers quilting her fourth career. She is active in the
Piece and Plenty Quilt Guild in Rolla, MO, and has taught a variety of
classes, including 9-patch for beginners, stack-and-slice, and improvisational piecing.
KAREN’S 10,000 INCHES — 2013 REPORT
The piece and Plenty Quilt Guild has outdone itself by donating 135 quilts to the
Methodist Women’s Group, Birthright of Rolla, Pregnancy Resource Center and Russell House. In August, we had 37 quilts donated at the meeting for the Pregnancy resource Center. The were given to the representative who came and gave a talk at our
meeting. We do not have the names of the donors of that night, since they were given
directly to Jane and Daren and the names were not written down.. Thanks to Karen’s
efforts and love of this project many quilts were donated in her memory at our December meeting. Below is the list of all the people who helped reach this grand total of
17,166 inches.

In Karen’s memory, money was donated to buy fabric and batting. We will be having
some work days to put kits together for anyone who wants to make a baby quilt for
this project. Please feel free to come and help make kits, or take a kit or two to work
at home, or make one from your stash. These quilts are put to good use by mothers
who have so little their babies. Thanks for all that you do to make this project a success.

Several guild members will be showing different ways to Hand
Quilt. Bring your thimble we will have needles and learn
hands-on how to hand quilt.

May 1, 2014
All Guild Members bring items from their sewing room that they no
longer want and offer those items to the other members.
Each member will be responsible for their own exchange.

New York Beauty State of Mind
In this entertaining presentation, Linda discusses the
inspiration behind the AQS Bestseller “New York Beauty Simplified”, the experience with the book writing and publishing
process, as well as the “stories” behind each of the quilts and
their makers in the book. Linda brings all or most of the quilts
from the book.

New York Beauty Diversified
Linda Hahn is well known for her ONE PIN technique for
making New York Beauty blocks. This class is from Linda’s
new book New York Beauty Diversified.
Students will discover how to take New York Beauty blocks to
new dimension by incorporating them into easy blocks. The
blocks are mix and matchable. There is a kit fee of $25 which
includes custom cut acrylic templates, set of (5) paper piecing
stencils and on package of (25 sheets) of Electric Quilt
Foundation paper which can be left in the quilt.
