From the Director
Welcome to the first winter issue of Kamm’s Corners Magazine! We have finally made
the leap to publishing four times a year, instead of the previous three. Our decision
has mostly to do with the fact that there always seems to be more news to print than
space available, and our advertisers told us they would embrace an additional issue.
Since it’s been awhile, please join me in thanking our faithful advertisers, especially
Fairview Hospital, in enabling this publication to be free to the neighborhood! The
best way you can thank this local group is to patronize them. Additionally, our staffer
Marilyn Osborne, on whose shoulders much of the additional work will fall, has
accepted the load in stride. Thanks Marilyn.
I also want to offer a special thanks to Joe Outlaw, who handles layout and production
support for the magazine through his business Outlaw Productions. He has encouraged
us to use color, mail the magazine, and embrace a host of other improvements that
continue to make this publication the envy of our peers. He is a most ardent supporter
of our organization, and we are very grateful for his invaluable assistance.
People continue to “opt in” to our e-newsletter, sent once a month to subscribers
and filled with “new news” about us and activities that we are involved in around the
neighborhood. To subscribe, visit our website at kammscorners.com, and you’ll always
be the first to be informed!
The first organizational planning meeting for the Kamm’s Corners Farmers Market,
slated for this summer, was held a couple of weeks ago. The excitement is building for
the market that is scheduled for Sundays in the summer at the Southeast Quad parking
lot behind Walgreens. Look for details in upcoming e-newsletters and the spring issue
of this magazine due out in May. Fresh produce in a fun atmosphere is on the way!
Before I close I want to direct you to an article I wrote on page 7 where I offer my
thanks to those who responded to the fire at the “castle” on December 1st.
As always, let us know how we’re doing!
The lovely leaping lasses on the cover are from the Masterson School of
Irish Dance. Kamm’s Corners will soon have its own school of Irish dance
thanks to Masterson grad Patrick Campbell. See article on page 18.

Around the
Corners
Great News! Nine storefronts
on the north side of Lorain Avenue
in Downtown Kamm’s Corners will
be renovated this spring! These
include Gino’s Shoe Repair, Allied
Tax Service, Dad’s Smoke Shop,
Common Grounds, Segway, The Coin
Shop, and the West Park Barbershop.
Daniel L. Lovinger, Kamcor Realty
Company property manager, recently
signed an agreement to utilize the City
of Cleveland Storefront Renovation
Program (SRP), which provides
a 40% rebate (up to $25,000) for
exterior renovations. KCDC and City
of Cleveland Design Specialist Tim
Barrett developed the project design,
which includes creative new signage
and the restoration of limestone details
and shields on the storefront facades
to help bring the building back to life.
Look for dramatic improvements this
spring. For more information about
the SRP, contact Cindy Janis at cindy.
[email protected].
Save the Date! KCDC’s Annual
Town Meeting will take place at
7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30th
at the auditorium of St. Joseph
Academy, 3430 Rocky River Drive. Our
keynote speaker will be Mayor Frank
Jackson. Other speakers will include
Councilman Michael A. Dolan and
KCDC Executive Director Steve
Lorenz. Free and open to the public.
Cleveland Housing Court, in
partnership with the City of Cleveland
and KCDC, will host a Housing Clinic
on Thursday, March 15th from 6:308:30 p.m. at Gunning Recreation
Center, 16700 Puritas Avenue. If you
are dealing with landlord/tenant issues,
code violations on your property, or a
nuisance property next door, this event
is for you. Drop in and speak with
people who can help.
Owners Denise and John Donahue
will open Top Dog this spring at 16804
Lorain Avenue (formerly Kathleen’s
Kitchen). The menu features a variety
of hot dogs and toppings. Hamburgers,
Kamm’s Corners Magazine
grilled chicken sandwiches, salad, fries,
and milkshakes will also be available.
Hours will be from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00
p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Congratulations to Sandi Papcum,
proprietor of The Beauty Spot, 17009
Lorain Avenue. She recently purchased
her building, which also includes
Boulevard Clock & Watch Repair and
the Arcade Tavern. The building dates
back to 1936. During the purchasing
process, Sandi discovered a little known
fact. She said, “The Arcade Tavern
was designed by the Pabst Brewing
Company when they launched their
Blue Ribbon beer brand. It is one of
several such bars across the US. Only
one other is still standing in the region,
and that’s in Port Clinton.”
KFC, located at 16729 Lorain Avenue,
invested $400,000 in extensive interior
and exterior renovations. Soon, the
pole sign will be replaced with a ground
sign. A variety of additional landscaping
will be installed in the planters, too.
Check out the renovation and the new
menu items being offered.
Conserv-Air has completed relocating
from Westlake to their new headquarters
at 4181 Rocky River Drive, next door
to Marten’s Funeral Home. ConservAir owner Mike Aerni is thrilled to
be joining our community and has
partnered with his major supplier,
Lennox, to offer a free air conditioning
unit with the purchase of a high efficiency
furnace. See ad on page 22.
On January 11th, sisters Lucy
Champa and Linda Sobieraj opened
Cone Zone & Grill at 4081 Rocky River
Drive, formerly Dairy Queen. See page
14 for an article about this welcome
addition to the neighborhood.
Bus Shelters moved at Kamm’s
Corners. Regular riders of RTA will
notice that the bus shelters have
been moved at Kamm’s Corners in
conjunction with the Streetscape
Improvement Plan and to better serve
the neighborhood. Many area riders
head towards Kamm’s Plaza, so the
Lorain Avenue shelters were moved
to the west side of Rocky River Drive.
The northbound Rocky River Drive
shelter was moved south of Lorain to
eliminate the backup of traffic through
the intersection during rush hour.
Kamm’s Corners Magazine is now
being published quarterly: February,
May, August, and November. That’s
one up from the previously published

If you live in Ward 21 and have not
received Kamm’s Corners Magazine in
your mailbox, but would like to, please
e-mail us your name and address at
[email protected]. You may

website: www.kammscorners.com.

Dear Neighbor:
Well, the year 2007 is off to a grand
start. After record warm temperatures
in December and January, winter has
returned with a vengeance. As I write this
note, wind chills are 25 below and school
has been suspended!
At City Hall we are preparing to
review and pass our several budgets. The
Community Development Block Grant
hearings are underway. Once again, the
news from Washington DC is that the
CDBG budget will again be reduced.
In Ward 21, this will mean that our
storefront and home renovation programs
will have to stretch their existing resources
even further. Hopefully, we’ll be able to
hold the line and continue to assist home
and small business owners.
Once the CDBG budget process
is complete, the council will begin
to deliberate over the General Fund
Operations and Capital Improvement
budgets. The Operations budget provides
for the annual operating expenditures of
the various city divisions such as Public
Safety, Public Service, and Recreation. It
also includes the operating expenditures
for non-governmental Enterprise Funds
such as Hopkins Airport, the Division of
Water, and the Convention Center. Total
resources/expenditures for 2007 are
estimated to be $1.5 billion.
Income tax (55.3%), property tax
(10.5%), and other miscellaneous taxes
and revenues comprise the General and
Enterprise Fund budgets. Personnel
expenses consume an overwhelming
portion of these budgets. Residents can
expect staffing and service levels in all city
departments to remain at current levels.
Thereafter, the council will discuss the
annual Capital Expenditure budget and the
Mayor’s draft five-year capital expenditure
plan. The Capital
Expenditure
budget reinvests
general tax
revenues in
capital assets such
as roadways, bridges,
parks, firehouses, and
other public structures.
The Mayor’s draft fiveyear proposal adopts a “worst
to first” reinvestment strategy
whereby the bulk of the City’s
available capital dollars are spent in the
most challenged Cleveland neighborhoods
first.
Under the plan, over the next five
years, Ward 20 receives the least amount
of capital investment ($500,000), followed
by Ward 16 ($625,000). Ward 21 is
next with a $2.2 million proposed capital
investment. The total proposed capital
reinvestment city wide is approximately
$764.5 million.
I do not believe that a “worst to first”
reinvestment strategy is prudent. While
I understand the philosophy behind the
strategy, I do not believe that we can
successfully strengthen our weakest
neighborhoods at the risk of undermining
our strongest. In my view, the current
draft promotes migration to the suburbs,
decreases tax revenues, and ultimately fails
to strengthen the city.
I believe our strongest communities
should receive sustaining levels of
reinvestment so that they continue
to provide a stable tax base to allow
reinvestment throughout the city.
The Kamm’s Corners Streetscape
improvement has not currently been
completely funded. The new underground
electrical service for Fairview Hospital is
funded and will be constructed this year. I
continue to work diligently with the Mayor
and his staff to complete the streetscape
financing so both projects may be
constructed simultaneously, as logic and
opportunity would dictate.
I welcome your assistance, input,
and questions concerning the budgeting
process. Please feel free to politely
express your opinion on the budget by
contacting Mayor Jackson or Council
President Sweeney at Cleveland City Hall.
In the mean time, stay warm and God
bless.

What’s in Store For Us?
Rego’s Fresh Market Opens at Kamm’s Plaza!
…by Marilyn Osborne
Cash registers are ringing at the new Rego’s Fresh Market
in Kamm’s Plaza, 17400 Lorain Avenue. It’s a happy sound
in a neighborhood that was saddened when Tops Market
closed in December 2006, leaving a second large vacancy at
the plaza. Medic Drug closed last year.
“We were worried that the reduced traffic to the plaza would
really hurt the other merchants here,” said Yvonne Perez of
Yvonne’s Jewelers. “All the shopkeepers are delighted with
Rego’s joining us.”
So are the neighbors. Each week, KCDC received telephone
calls from local folks hoping for another grocery store. Now,
they are discovering what’s in store for them at the new
Rego’s, which is a local family-owned supermarket operation
based in Westlake.
A.J. Rego, proprietor of the new store, declares it is the
kind of grocery store we all grew up with. “We take special
pride in garden-fresh produce coming in six days a week
— a tradition started by my father. In addition, we will have
butchers in store with the highest quality meat available along
with fresh sausage made in house.”
The store carries a line of specialty meats, including natural
beef without hormones and bison, which is naturally low
in fat. Fresh seafood will be offered at competitive prices.
The store sells Dairymen’s milk, which is locally produced,
and Mitchell’s ice cream — also locally made. Organic milk
is available, too.

Proprietor A. J. Rego welcomes you to explore his freshly stocked shelves!
Along with a wide selection of premium brand name
grocery products, the new store features an 80-foot long
wine section, a top-notch card shop, and a floral shop
complete with fresh-cut flowers and an assortment of
arrangements.
The popular Corbo’s Dolceria of Little Italy operates
the in-store bakery, offering fine Italian pastries and their
famous cassata cake with delicious custard and fresh fruit
filling. Italian breads, pizza, foccacia, pepperoni bread, and
calzones will keep you coming back for more! Corbo’s is
family owned and operated for four generations now. This
is their first location on Cleveland’s west side.
“For parties, I’d drive all the way to Little Italy for Corbo’s
bakery,” said Sandi Papcum of The Beauty Spot. “I’m thrilled
at the prospect of picking up their authentic Italian foods
right here in our neighborhood now.”
Other innovations at the new Rego’s Market include a
dine-in area, adjacent to the front doors. There, you may
enjoy oven-fresh bakery or a meal of the prepared foods
offered at the deli counter, including the Rego family recipe
fried chicken. For those who crave it, a sushi bar has all
the popular choices available.
Anyone who used to shop at the old Tops will notice
that all the U-Scans have been pulled out and replaced
with regular cash registers. “We concentrate on service,
so we feel it is important for our customers to enjoy oneon-one contact at the check out,” explained A.J. “Also, our
customers will see a lot of familiar faces because we hired
most of the former Tops employees, many of whom live
in this neighborhood.”
Everyone is happy to have a grocery store back in Kamm’s
Plaza — and such a high-quality store at that. Something
else is back, too. The little train on the tracks above the
checkout counters is chugging along once again. Another
reason to smile.
Store hours are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday,
and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Why We Pay Taxes
…by Steve Lorenz
Many of you know or have heard that
my rental property, known around the
neighborhood as “The Castle,” suffered
severe fire damage on December 1.
The rest of the story is that my wife
and I were on our way home after
dinner at Red Lantern. We had been
at Winter Wonderland at Kamm’s
Plaza and were feeling the Christmas
spirit after an excellent neighborhood
family event sponsored by the plaza
management. Santa had arrived via
horse and sleigh, and the neighborhood
children were all abuzz with excitement
and anticipation.
As we drove home, we pulled over
on Lucille to let a fire truck by, and
then followed it to our home! Other
fire trucks were already there — and
the Castle had flames shooting through
its third-story roof!
I commend the firefighters of
stations 39, 43, 33, and 23 who fought
so valiantly and courageously to
extinguish the fire. This “triple twoalarm” brought seven trucks plus EMS
to the fire. Several of the firefighters
risked their lives to assure that no one
was inside and to gain control of the
fire. The fire was the lead story on three
of the local TV stations on their late
news that evening.
Our residence, immediately north of
the property, was undoubtedly saved
by these brave men. The winds were
gusting at 40 miles per hour and the
fire was raging and blowing against our
wood shingle home next door. Further
tragedy was averted only by the quick
and effective response of our safety
forces. No one was hurt.
We are deeply grateful to three
neighbors, one who actually drove
up the street to alert station 39, and
the other two who woke a tenant who
escaped safely.
The next week, as we visited each of
the stations to thank these firefighters
with token pastries, I was astonished to
learn that people rarely take the time to
thank them. They were so appreciative
that we made the effort. I’m just grateful
they made the effort.
Folks, that’s why we pay taxes!

Rugby is a game played in over 120 countries throughout
the world. Starting in March, the West Park-Fairview YMCA
will add youth rugby to its sports programs.
Collaborating with local rugby clubs and coaches, a
non-contact flag rugby program called Rippa Rugby will
take place for 8 weeks beginning March 19th and ending
May 12th. Participants will learn the
safe and social game of Rippa Rugby
through instructional classes and
weekend games. The children will be
divided into three age groups: five and
six years, seven to nine years, and ten
to twelve years. The youngest group
will be an instructional league and the
older groups will include branch and
inter-branch games with other YMCA’s
in Greater Cleveland.

Popeyes Adds
a Little Spice to
Kamm’s Corners
…by Cindy Janis
You don’t have to go to Louisiana
to get authentic New Orleans-style
dishes. Award-winning Cajun recipes,
first made thirty-five years ago in
New Orleans, have come to Kamm’s
Corners.
On December 28th, Popeyes Chicken
& Biscuits opened in the former
East of Chicago location at 14747
Lorain Avenue. Tony Smith, owner of
12 Popeyes restaurants throughout
Northeast Ohio, opened lucky number
13 in Kamm’s Corners.
“We chose Kamm’s Corners for the
strong, stable neighborhood,” said
Tony. “We found that our product
was underserved in the area, and are
very happy to offer an option beyond
burgers and sandwiches.”

Popeyes flavorful chicken meals come
in your choice of Classic Mild or New
Orleans Spicy. Crispy chicken breast
sandwiches and all-white-meat chicken
strips are also available. For something
unique and different, try one of
Popeyes Louisiana Legends. Smothered
chicken, a dish with chicken breasts and
vegetables over rice and covered with
signature gravy, and chicken sausage
jambalaya rotate on the menu.
What makes their chicken taste
so moist and tender? “Our dishes
are prepared with fresh chicken,
never frozen,” Tony said. “I purchase
our chicken directly from a farm in
Canton.”
To compliment your meal, choose
from a selection of award-winning New
Orleans-style side dishes. Favorites
include, Cajun rice, called “rice
dressing” or “dirty rice” in New Orleans
because of the tasty blend of meats,
shallots and seasonings, and red
beans and rice, a hearty and delicious
blend of beans, seasonings, meats,
shallots and a few special secrets. Also,
mashed potatoes with Cajun gravy,
cole slaw, Cajun buttered fries, and
fluffy buttermilk biscuits are popular
choices.

Exciting new architecture, dramatic

…After!
Want seafood with flavor? Try Popeyes seafood selections,
including butterfly shrimp in a crunchy special batter and
tender flaky catfish with a mild New Orleans flavor. And
don’t miss the perfect ending to your meal, apple pie with
cinnamon topping.
According to Tony, the response from the neighborhood
has been great. “The customers like the unique menu
choices and are very impressed with the total new look of
the building.”
The City of Cleveland Storefront Renovation Program
provided design assistance, and a 40% rebate (up to $25,000)
for exterior renovations. Over $350,000 was invested in
the extensive interior and exterior renovation. The major
investment in the neighborhood also created 27 new jobs
for the City of Cleveland.
Popeyes signature colors helped bring the vacant building
back to life. Rich maize-colored stucco was applied to
the exterior with red accent trim, and the bulkhead was
covered with mocha-brown bricks. A red standing-seam roof
and green gooseneck lights were installed along with the
distinctive red, blue, and green Popeyes signage. A colorful
mural featuring New Orleans musicians is the focal point on
the side of the building. The huge pole sign was removed
and replaced with a neighborhood-friendly ground sign
surrounded by extensive landscaping.
“This is our 8th location in the City of Cleveland, and we
are very happy to be in the Kamm’s Corners neighborhood,”
said Tony. “We look forward to working with the other
businesses to support the community.”
To satisfy your Cajun cravings, visit Popeyes Chicken &
Biscuits every day from 10:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., or drivethru to pick up your favorite dishes on your way home. Call

Beyond Little Lulu
Comic Books Are Serious Business!
…by Marilyn Osborne
After 16 years next to Kamm’s
Barbershop, Carol & John’s Comic
Shop moved to a larger location
within Kamm’s Plaza. Recently named
by Cleveland Magazine as one of the
Best 65 Things about Cleveland, the
successful shop is now located at
17448 Lorain Avenue between The
Red Lantern and Jackie Chen’s Dragon
Towers. At twice the size of its former
location, the shop features an expanded
product line including more action
figures, t-shirts, and the very popular
manga. Don’t know about manga? Carol
Cazzarin will be glad to direct you to
these very modern Japanese-style comic
books. She’ll also be happy to point out
a small collection of Little Lulu comics.
“Mom makes me order Little Lulu along
with the rest of the stuff because it is still
her favorite,” explained son John Dudas
of the mother-and-son team.
The store carries the gamut from
the familiar comic book superheroes
to new graphic novels. If you think all
comic books are lightweight, then you
dental

will be surprised to learn that a Pulitzer
Prize Letters award was bestowed upon
Art Spiegelman for his graphic novel
Maus: A Survivor’s Tale. It recounts
Speigelman’s father’s struggle to survive
the Holocaust.
The story of Carol & John’s Comic
Shop began in the late 70’s, when
young John would visit his Polish greatgrandfather in Slavic Village. In an effort
to learn English, the old man read
comic books given to him by the family.
“I remember visiting him and looking
through his stacks of comic books,” said
John. “Avengers #165 was the comic
book I remember the most. It made me
want to hunt out more comic books with
my lunch money.”
When he was only 11 years old,
John began working part time in a
comic book shop called North Coast
Nostalgia in Parma. When he was 14, the
storeowners hired John’s mom Carol to
do the bookkeeping. Three years later,
they both were laid off. By then, John’s
passion for comics had grown as well as
his collection. It filled 56 boxes that each
held 300 comic books - all cataloged.
(Serious collectors catalog everything!)
Since they both had learned a lot about
the comic business, they decided to open
their own shop using John’s extensive
collection as inventory.
“I was too young to sign any legally
binding contracts, so the first store was
called Carol’s Comics, John explained.
They opened in Kamm’s Plaza on
October 28, 1990. At that time, most
comic shops had a reputation of being
small, dirty, hole-in-the-wall places. Their
goal was to offer a clean, well-organized
environment. And, they succeeded,
often appearing in “Best of Cleveland”
lists in local publications.

In 1994, John turned 21 and the
store officially became Carol & John’s
Comic Book Shop. That same year, John
became a Cleveland firefighter. Although
he spends most of his time at the fire
station, he still takes care of maintaining
the inventory at the comic shop, while
Carol runs the store. “We’ve grown now
to an inventory of 375 boxes holding 300
comic books each,” John said. (That’s
112,500 comic books!)
A highlight for the business took place
when American Splendor, featuring the
life of local comic book writer Harvey
Pekar, was filmed in the store’s first
location at the other end of the plaza.
“The set designers shut the place down
for a day to make it look like a store
from the 80’s. They filmed a 45-second
scene in the movie. “Actor Paul Giamatti
was a really cool guy,” John said. Gene’s
Place, the restaurant a few doors down,
was also transformed briefly for a movie
scene. That end of Kamm’s Plaza was
blocked off for its Hollywood moment
while movie crews took over. “After that,
everything was returned to normal very
quickly,” said John.
Interest in comic books has fluctuated
over their years in the business, but Carol
& John’s Comic Book Shop is reaping
the benefits of a recent resurgence in
comic book popularity. Not only that,
with the larger new store between two
popular restaurants, Carol has noticed
that people who would never think to
visit a comic book shop come in while
waiting for their takeout orders.
“They are surprised to find so many
interesting things here,” Carol said. One
visitor stopped in to extend a friendly
welcome to Kamm’s Plaza.
“Thanks, but we’ve been in the plaza
for 16 years,” Carol explained.
“Really? Where?” the man asked.
“Next to the barbershop,” Carol
said.
“There’s a barbershop?” (Kamm’s
Barbershop is celebrating 40 years
here!)

Get Into the Zone
— The Cone Zone!
“We are not
absentee
owners.
Either myself
or my sister
will be on site
each day.”
…by Joe Outlaw
Many ice cream fans out there may
be familiar with an area cold delight
institution, Zero Zest in Parma. Now
West Park residents can enjoy the same
tasty treats at the Cone Zone and Grill,
open since January 11th and located at
4081 Rocky River Drive in the former
Dairy Queen building.
Sisters Lucy Champa and Linda
Sobieraj have combined their respective
business and ice cream talents in the
new West Park enterprise. Linda had
30 years experience in the ice cream
business with Zero Zest. Lucy had
owned and managed a successful maid
service employing over 20 people.
Lucy made the decision to close her
business when she got married and
wished to devote her full attention
to children. She made the transition
from businesswoman to stay at home
mother raising two sons. When her two
sons reached their early teens, she felt
it was time to go back into business.
With the help of her husband and
encouragement from her sister, she
began looking for a location to open
an ice cream shop.
“She talked me into it!” exclaims Lucy.
“I did not!” returns Linda. Obviously it
had been a topic of family conversation
for some time. Once the decision had
been made, Lucy began her search for
a location in earnest.
An ad in the Plain Dealer brought her
attention to the former Dairy Queen
here in West Park. She and her husband
drove through the neighborhood,
visited a neighborhood coffee shop,
and talked to people they met, even
questioning a postman along his
route.
“What impressed us was that the
people we met said great things about
the neighborhood” recounts Lucy.
The enthusiasm she encountered and
the quality of the area gave her the
confidence to take over the Dairy Queen
property. With the help of her sister
Linda, Lucy felt she could bring a new
level of quality product and service to
the Kamm’s Corners neighborhood.
Kamm’s Corners Magazine
Lucy and Linda put a great deal of
effort into cleaning and preparing
the former Dairy Queen for their new
venture. “We insist on total cleanliness,”
explains Lucy. “We have scrubbed every
inch of our facility in preparation for
our new business.”
Over and above the physical
preparation of the site, the sisters have
leveraged Linda’s long experience with
ice cream products, complimented by
the full menu capability of the Dairy
Queen equipment they acquired, to
offer a complete dairy treat and fast
food menu to their customers.
“We have greatly expanded our
selection of products over the Dairy
Queen menu” Lucy explains. “Our food
menu parallels the DQ offering and
adds popular items such as mozzarella
sticks, fried mushrooms, and soft
pretzels. Chicken wraps are planned
for the summer. Of course, Linda’s
expertise makes the ice cream menu
a delight to behold. You’ll never again
crave a Dilly Bar once you have tasted
a Cone Zone Silly Bar!
“We are not absentee owners,”
states Lucy. “Either myself or my sister
will be on site each day. Though we
have hired the most experienced
former Dairy Queen employees, it is
our responsibility to maintain quality,
cleanliness, and service.”
Cone Zone hours are Tuesday
through Saturday, 11 a.m. - 7 p.m., and
Sunday, 12 p.m. - 7 p.m. They will be
open Mondays starting in March and
will have extended summer hours.
Don’t let yourself get in a major chain
fast food rut. Visit the Cone Zone for a
refreshing and delectable break. And
tell Lucy that the Outlaw sent you!
Lucy and Linda welcome customers to the Cone Zone and Grill.

Do You Remember Radtke’s Deli?
…by Gary Swilik
At one time the family-owned grocery was a neighborhood
institution. West Park had dozens of these mom-and-pop stores
owned by local families who lived in homes attached to or behind
their stores. Radtke’s Delicatessen was a family grocery near
Kamm’s Corners that served the area for nearly thirty years. The
building still stands on the east side of Rocky River Drive.
The property that later became Radtke’s was purchased in
1910 by William Carroll, who moved into the large two-story
house on the site at 4187 Rocky River Drive. Mr. Carroll was the
son of an Irish immigrant father and had worked in the grocery
business from an early age. By 1921 and possibly much earlier,
Mr. Carroll and his wife Martha were operating a grocery in
a detached, wood frame store that stood in front of the house.
The Carroll’s shop, variously described in city directories as
a grocery, confectionery, and variety store, sold canned goods,
candy, and tobacco products. Mr. Carroll passed away in 1933.
His widow Martha continued to operate the business until 1939
when she sold the property to the Radtke Family. In her later years
Martha Carroll lived at park-like Trailer Gardens (at West 150th
and Lorain where K-Mart is now). She passed away in 1970.
The new owners of the house and store on Rocky River Drive
were Kurt and Anna Marie Radtke, who emigrated from Germany
to Cleveland in 1925 with their two children Ingeborg (“Inge”)
and Harold. Soon after arriving they had a third child, Erika.
“My father was a brakeman on the railroad in Germany,” says
daughter Erika Boehnke. “Conditions weren’t good at the time
and my mother’s cousin, who was living in Cleveland, said
opportunities were better here.”

Radtke’s Deli, 4181 Rocky River Drive, circa 1961.
“My father went to work for Ohio Farmer’s Milk Company
on West 106th Street, which is now Dairymen’s,” continues
Erika. “He was a filler, taking the milk bottles from a
conveyer belt and loading them into crates. My mother
helped by doing house cleaning for Mrs. Spang, of the old
Spang Bakery. The job worked out for my mother because
she could take me with her to the Spang home on West
Boulevard.”
Misfortune struck the Radtke Family on a rainy night in
1929 when their car was hit by a drunk driver on Almira
Avenue. All members of the family suffered serious injuries
with the exception of Erika. Although Kurt Radtke had
been working for the dairy just six months, he was such
a good employee that they held his job for him while he
got well and even supplied the family with dairy products
to help out.
The family recovered and eventually went into business
for themselves, while Mr. Radtke continued to work his
dairy job. “My mother opened a small store in the front
section of our house on West 43rd Street,” recalls Harold
Radtke. “This was in 1936. We sold groceries, bread, and
canned goods. The house is still there but the store has
been converted into living quarters.”
Business went well for the family. In 1939 Kurt and Anna
Radtke were able to buy the house and store on Rocky
River Drive, and the family moved to the Kamm’s Corners
area. In the beginning, Anna ran the store during the day
while Kurt kept his dairy job. After a few years Kurt began
working exclusively in the family business. And, of course,
the Radtke children all helped at various times.
Son Harold grew up working in the store. He served 3½
years in the army during World War II, and then returned
to the counter until the late 1960’s.
“I worked in the store everyday after school,” says
daughter Erika. “When my dad was still at the dairy I’d
stay in the store while mom got dinner ready. I remember
doing my homework with my school books spread across
the counter.”
In about 1952, the Radtkes had a new brick store
constructed at 4181 Rocky River Drive, immediately north
of the original wooden structure, and officially named it
“Radtke’s Delicatessen.” It’s this building that stands today.
The old store was torn down and they expanded into the
new building with an enlarged line of groceries, cold cuts,
imports, beer, wine, and magazines.
“Both my parents liked dealing with people,” says Erika.
“My father was a very sociable man who always used to say
Winter 2007
‘smile, smile, smile.’ That’s something that’s
helped me in every job I’ve ever had.”
After operating the store for over 25
years Kurt and Anna Radtke retired to
Boca Raton, Florida, in about 1966. Kurt
died at age 77 in 1974. Anna passed away
at age 96 in 1995.
After the Radtke’s retired, Harold
Radtke formed a partnership with his
sister Erika’s late husband, Robert
Boehnke, and kept the deli open until
1967 when it finally closed. “Convenience
stores were opening in the area and
supermarkets were staying open later,”
explains Erika. “The independent grocer
couldn’t compete.”
“I enjoyed my days at the deli,” says
Harold.” I liked talking to customers and
being part of the neighborhood.”
Harold went on to spend 19 years as
the frozen food manager at Eva’s Super
Market in Middleburg Heights. Erika
worked for Children and Family Services
for many years and has been very active
with the Strongsville Senior Center. Both
are retired and living in Strongsville. Their
older sister Inge, wife of the late Edward
Zeinert, had a career in nursing and is
now retired in Florida.
Today Oldack’s Beauty Salon, built in
1973, stands on the site of the original
wooden store. The former Radtke family
house is behind it. The Radtke’s Deli
building next door, at 4181 Rocky River
Drive, is again serving the neighborhood.
It has been renovated to become the new
home of Conserv-Air, a heating and air
conditioning firm (ad on page 22).

An Irish Dance
Master’s Legacy
The girls on the cover of this magazine
are from the Masterson School of
Irish Dance. For the past 42 years,
Bobby Masterson has been teaching
youths the beautiful and graceful art
of traditional Irish step dancing. His
dedication and commitment continues
to lift and inspire his dancers and
their audiences. Bobby has had much
success with his school, winning many
regional, national, and world medals.
Most recently, two of Bobby’s pupils,
Patrick Campbell and Kevin O’ Malley
went on to star as lead dancers in the
world-renown Michael Flatley’s “Lord
of the Dance.” They both continue to
teach with Bobby and perform at many
festivals and shows.
Patrick is also owner and operator
of P. J. McIntyre’s Pub and Restaurant,
opening in the former West End
Appliance at 17119 Lorain Avenue. He

Fairview Hospital Helps Women
Battle Leading Cause of Death
Women are used to taking care of
their family’s health. They’re usually
the ones to bandage scraped knees and
schedule doctor appointments. But
what women often miss in their health
care focus is themselves, and it’s taking
a big toll on heart health.
According to the American Heart
Association, about one in every three
U.S. women dies of cardiovascular
disease. That’s about a half million
women each year, or almost one
every single minute. But with focused
prevention efforts, many of these
deaths can be avoided.
Anjali Maroo, MD, interventional
cardiologist at Fairview Hospital,
explains there may be gender-specific
differences that contribute to the high
rate of heart disease in women. But a
much greater cause of cardiovascularrelated deaths in women, she said, is
that atherosclerotic disease, as well as
modifiable risk factors, largely goes
undetected and untreated.
“Oftentimes, women believe they are
taking care of their health by getting
a yearly mammogram screening or
Pap test,” said Dr. Maroo. “But they
are missing important screening and
prevention efforts for cardiovascular
health.”
• Stop smoking. If you smoke, now
is the time to quit. Many smokingcessation programs and techniques
are available to help.
• Get follow-up care if necessary.
If you’ve been diagnosed with a
condition that puts you at risk for
heart disease, such as high blood
pressure, take action to control it.
“These steps sound simple, but
can be some of the hardest habits
to change,” explained Dr. Maroo.
“However, women need to realize the
seriousness of not making change.”
Dr. Maroo graduated cum laude from
Yale University with an undergraduate
and graduate degree in molecular
biophysics and biochemistry. She then
attended medical school at Harvard
University School of Medicine. Dr.
Maroo completed her residency at
Massachusetts General Hospital and
served as a cardiology fellow at the
Cleveland Clinic Foundation. She is an
interventional cardiologist currently on
staff at Fairview Hospital, with special
interest in pregnancy and heart disease.
For more information about Dr. Maroo
or to schedule an appointment, please
call 216-252-2770.

• Know your numbers. Beginning at

the numbers important to heart
health, including: blood pressure,
cholesterol, fasting glucose, body
mass index and waist circumference.
Your health care provider will
personalize the timing and frequency
of these tests to best suit your

• Exercise regularly. Exercising just
30 minutes a day can dramatically
improve cardiovascular health.
Walking is a good place to start.

The All

Moving On Is a Clear Choice
Have you faced the task of clearing
out the home of a relative or dear
friend who has moved to a nursing
home or has died? Perhaps papers
and magazines run amok, the attic
overflows with storage boxes, hobby
supplies fill rooms, and closets are so
stuffed that they look like sales racks
in a second-hand store. Even if things
are not quite so cluttered, to suddenly
deal with someone else’s possessions
often can be emotionally overwhelming
and time consuming. Now, when it all
seems like too much, you have a new
option: Moving On - Preparing Homes
For Sale.
Started by Kamm’s Corners residents
Jackie Smith and husband Mark
Medwid, Moving On - Preparing Homes
For Sale is an estate clearance and
cleaning service for houses made vacant
by relocation, retirement, or death. “My
mission is to give clients peace of mind
in a difficult time - while maximizing
the value of their personal property,”
Jackie said.
She started the company three years
ago, when her mother’s good friend
died suddenly. “It fell upon my mom to
clear his house for resale, and he was
a hoarder. The house was filled with
everything imaginable, from brand new
bargain clothing to dozens of empty
buckets. Mom felt overwhelmed and
asked me to take on the job,” said
Jackie.
As she and her husband started
purging that house of its mess, Jackie
looked for help in the phone book.
She found services that conduct estate
sales and those who show up with a
dumpster and throw everything away.
But there was nothing in between.
That’s when the idea for Moving On
- Preparing Homes For Sale was born.
What’s different about it is all
items are sold, recycled, donated, or
discarded as appropriate. “We’re a
service with a conscience. If it’s paper,
glass, or plastic that can be recycled,

then I make sure it is recycled. If items
are in good or reusable condition like
new or gently worn clothing, furniture,
or non-perishable food items, then
I make sure these are donated to an
appropriate organization. I’ll also
obtain the proper tax receipts for my
client,” explained Jackie. To achieve
proper disposition, Jackie works closely
with charities, auctioneers, antiques
dealers, resale shops, recycling banks,
and others.
Typically, a visit by Moving On begins
with a free consultation that includes
a room-by-room evaluation of the
house and the personal property it
contains. Then, the client reviews a list
of services and selects those needed
to clear the house. “Not only do we
clean the house from top to bottom,
we coordinate painting, electrical work,
carpet removal, landscaping and more
- just about whatever it takes to prepare
the home for sale,” Jackie said. “Clients
receive an outline of the work that
needs to be done along with an estimate
for the cost of the service.”
Experience the joy, the lightness,
and the freedom that comes from
letting the professionals at Moving
On prepare the house of a loved one
for sale. For more information, visit
