Lee’s Horsham Now Carries Cold Beer
For three Fridays in April, Lee’s Horsham customers had a
the chance to win prizes, get beer-related promo items and
enter a drawing for a wide range of Phillies items, including
two game tickets each week – and the grand prize, on the
final night, of two tickets to the Hall of Fame Club at the
stadium. There was no cost to attend the tastings, but to
qualify for the major Phillies prize drawings attendees
needed to buy either a six-pack of beer of a half-hoagie to
get an entry blank.
Montgomery Newspaper’s executive editor Mike Morsch attended one of the sessions and
commented on a recent news story that said people that drink beer are smarter. He concluded,
since Lee’s sells beer their customers are clearly smarter than most.

The Tastings were sponsored each week by a different distributor, and included a wide variety of foreign, domestic and craft
beers from among Lee’s full compliment of over 100-different brands. Calling the events a successs, Jon Waxman said “We
think that the addition of beer to our operation adds a whole new dimension to our offerings and the customer response has
been very good.” People dining in the restaurant may purchase single bottles of beer to go with their meals, but no open bottles
may leave the premises. Consumers can also purchase up-to-two six-packs-to-go.

HISTORY OF THE “HOAGIE”
Did you Know:
There are a number of different versions as to how the hoagie got its name, but no matter what version you believe, all agree
on one thing… it started in Philadelphia.
The most widely accepted story centers on an area of Philadelphia know as Hog Island, which was home to a shipyard during
World War I. The Italian immigrants working there would bring a giant sandwich made with cold cuts, spices, oil, lettuce,
tomatoes, onions and peppers for their lunches. These workers were nicknamed “Hoggies”. Over the years, the name was
attached to the sandwich as well, but under a different spelling.
But others insist:
A variation on this story says that yes, workers at Hog Island did bring this type of sandwich, but it was never called a hoagie.
And one day, an Irish worker who everyday carried an American cheese sandwich, looked enviously at his co-worker’s lunch
and said “if your wife will make me one of those things, I’ll buy it from you.” The Italian worker went home and said to his
wife, “tomorrow, make me two sandwiches, one for me and one for Hogan,” which was his co-workers name. So everyone
started calling the sandwich Hogans, which eventually got shortened to Hoagie.
And so the story goes:
Yet another version claims that the term was popularized in the 1930’s
by Al DePalma, a Philadelphia restaurateur who advertised himself as
“King of Hoagies”. He had once remarked that “you had to be a hog to
eat one of those sandwiches.” So when he opened his shop, he called
the sandwich a hoggie. But customers kept calling them hoagies, so he
changed the name.
The hoagie hits the big time:
The Hoagie was named an official sandwich of Philadelphia in 1992
after a petition campaign netted 35,000 signatures in support of the
idea. The hoagie of Choice was an Italian Hoagie with OIL, not Mayo!
