The XIX century was a period of embellishment work as well as a period of

the town worked towards the aim of becoming the Norman Capital of Culture,
building museums, libraries and statues
of famous characters. In the XX century,
major reconstruction was necessary after the bombings of the Second World
War.

The Monumental

Travel into Gustave
Flaubert Literature
In the footsteps
of Joan of Arc
2 hours
Gustave Flaubert was born in Rouen in
1821 from an upper middle class family.
His life was fully devoted to literature
with the City dear to his heart. Flaubert
wrote a lot about Rouen and invited
people to discover his childhood town
through ‘Madame Bovary’. In memory
of this author, Rouen raised his statue in
1890.
2 hours
After seven months of negotiations,
Joan of Arc was given to the British and
brought to Rouen for judgment around
Christmas 1430.
The city remembers the torment of Joan
of Arc, who was proclaimed an heretic
and burnt at the stake at the ‘Place du
Vieux Marché’ on 30th May 1431.
2 hours
The Monumental Cemetery was built
in the 19th century. This was the first
cemetery where monuments could be
placed on the graves, from whence its
name.
Graves could become everlasting.
A large majority of well-known people
of Rouen and the vicinity wished to find
eternal peace on this hillside facing the
town.
This is an opportunity to see something
of local history and its proud emblems.
The monuments of important mayors
are erected here. They are side by side
with prominent characters such as Flaubert, Boieldieu and Marcel Duchamp. Far
from being sorrowful, this tour is a walk
through history in a beautiful setting.

Architects, sculptors, glassblowers and

their know-how to Rouen. The construction of the cathedral enabled them to
show their talent, and made gothic architecture a product of the times.
Rouen is known universally as the place
of Joan of Arc's torment and execution.
The city is still marked by the traces of
this tragic episode in her story.

Museums
For the first time in France, a giant panoramic facility is being installed on the
Seine at Rouen. German artist Yadegar
Asisi has revived and renewed the panorama genre. His works are huge, spectacular and resolutely realistic and they
give new life to lost or inaccessible places:
exceptional natural locations, such as the
summit of Everest, the Amazon forest, or
historical sites (ancient Rome in 312, the
Berlin wall etc.).
· AMAZONIA (from September 26th
2015): dedicated to the complexity of the
tropical jungle, the Amazonia Panorama
is inspired by the incredible biodiversity
of nature and the perfection of its forms.
From a 15-metre-high platform, you will
experience the landscape of the Amazon
in all its height and vast expanse, pulling
yourself to the tops of tall trees and observing the fascinating plants and countless animal species. This panorama also
raises awareness of the fragility of this
threatened natural environment.
· ROUEN 1431, THE TIME OF JOAN OF
ARC (from 28 May 2016): Relive the epic
tale of Joan of Arc in Rouen in 360º. Yadegar Asisi leads you on a journey through

The Museum of Rouen, a nineteenth century temple, has been seeking to convert
itself, since its reopening in February
2007, into a twenty-first century forum,
a sustainable and responsible museum.
This venue, which is packed with natural
history and science, is so much more than
a mere museum. The wealth and diversity of its collections, with its hundreds of
thousands of specimens, make it one of
the leading museums outside Paris.
Its holdings chart the evolution of scientific museology. Considered for a long time
to be a type of "museum museum" where
the spirit of the venue is fully present, the
Museum of Rouen is seeking to become a
forum for debate on the key scientific and
cultural issues of today's world. With its
rich heritage, the establishment is part of
a process of exchange and reflection on
sustainable development, biodiversity,
global warming, the extinction of species,
bioethics ...
The Museum's relevance is evident to
those who take the time to study its
collections. Every specimen, rich in
scientific and historical information,
offers a window on the past, for greater
understanding of the present and
preparation for the future.
The National Museum of Education, heir
to the Pedagogical Museum created in
1879 by Jules Ferry, holds collections
whose wealth and diversity is a documentary resource that is unique in Europe.
The museum's exhibition centre is in a
typical Norman half-timbered house in
the historic heart of the city of Rouen. It
has collections that explore the history
of education.

The Battle of Normandy ended on the
banks of the Seine. At the end of August
1944, tens of thousands of German soldiers were trying to flee from the advancing Allies. The museum recalls those
tragic hours of fighting and then the relief of the liberation. Through the stories
of the soldiers, civilians and witnesses of
the fighting, through thousands of arms
and military uniforms, your understanding of the history of the final battles of
the Seine will be enhanced and enriched.

The famous Great Clock was fully restored
in 2006. This architectural ensemble
comprises a Gothic belfry, a Renaissance
archway and clock face, and a 18th century fountain. The belfry houses the city
bells and one of the oldest clock mechanisms in Europe, which was in operation
from the 14th century to 1928, i.e. more
than five million hours without stopping
once! Inside, the contemporary set up of
the new visit enables you to discover the
hidden part of this sumptuous monument
dedicated to the time. In the pavilion, you
can access the dials room and the old
apartment of the 'clock governor'. Finally
discover the 14th century mechanism, the
first bells of the city and an amazing panorama across the city.

Robert le Diable Castle
òN4 • Moulineaux
The castle dates back to the times of the
Dukes of Normandy and was demolished
many times, especially during the 100
years war and World War II.
It has, however, retained its medieval
core. Classified as a natural site in 1935,
especially for its expansive views offers
over the Seine valley, a large-scale restoration operation was undertaken by the
Normandy Metropolis in order to save
it. The work to make the site secure and
the developments opened up the area
around the chateau to the public. The
interior and moats remain closed except

The Matmut Centre of
Contemporary Art
Palais Bénédictine
òN1 • Saint-Pierre-de-Varengeville
The Palais Bénédictine, an architectural
masterpiece of gothic and Renaissance
inspirations, was erected at the end of
the 19th century in honour of the Bénédictine liqueur by Alexandre Le Grand, a
wine merchant from Fécamp, who had
found a recipe created in 1510 by a Benedictine monk in a grimoire. The tour then
leads to the one and only Bénédictine
distillery in the world, with its 19th century hammered copper stills, and to the
cellars. Eventually, visitors can enjoy the
contemporary art exhibition, before heading to the Winter Garden where they
are offered a tasting of one of the three
Bénédictine Expressions.
Twenty minutes away from Rouen, discover the Matmut Centre for Contemporary Art. The castle stands at the
centre of its garden, reflected in the ornamental lake, embodying the peaceful
beauty of 17th-century architecture. The
500-square-metre gallery, on two floors,
is dedicated to temporary exhibitions of
both established and emerging artists.
With tours and free workshops, a cultural
and education programme allows individuals and groups alike (children, adults,
educators…) to discover and understand
“the forms and forces” of contemporary
art. Six hectares with different “themes”
that evolve with the seasons: the Japanese
garden, the garden of the five rooms, the
arboretum, the rose garden, and the monumental sculpture garden.

Saint-Julien Chapel

in the middle of the Duke of Normandy’s

Henry II King of England and Duke of

In later years the chapel became a leper
house for the daughters of the nobility
and in the 17th century it was known as
the Virgin’s hall. The roof and walls are
decorated with marvellous paintings depicting scenes from Christ’s childhood
possibly copied from illuminated manuscripts.

Vascœuil Castle

Bois-Guilbert gardens
òPar R2 • Vascœuil
This 7-hectare park is a lasting tribute
to plant life and sculpture. Jean-Marc de
Pas, sculptor and landscapist, has created
a vast poetic landscape where 70 works
in bronze, resin or cement have been
erected beside the paths. A 17th century
chestnut tree, 2-hundred year old plain
trees together with symbolic spaces – the
pool and island, the labyrinth, the four
seasons cloister – surround the family
domain made up of the château, the summerhouse and the 17th and 18th century
chapel where a member of the family,
Pierre Corneille, spent much of his time.
On the edge of the Forest of Lyons, this
14th – 17th château with its French and
English style gardens, its pigeon house
and its garden display of modern sculptures is the venue for important exhibitions for paintings and sculptures of
great artists. Former residence of historian Jules Michelet (1798-1874), his
study has been restored at the top of the

auprès du vendeur le remboursement immédiat et sans pénalité des sommes versées ;
de qualité inférieure, le vendeur doit lui rembourser, dès son retour, la différence de prix ;
