UPDATE ON THE CALL PROCESS FOR AN ASSOCIATE PASTOR
ALL OF US ARE ANXIOUS TO WELCOME A NEW ASSOCIATE PASTOR TO EAST SIDE. THE PROCESS TO DO SO HAS
BEEN PUT INTO MOTION, AND I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH YOU EXACTLY WHERE WE ARE IN THAT PROCESS.
TWO ESSENTIAL PARTS OF THE PROCESS ARE CURRENTLY IN MOTION.
THE FIRST IS THE CREATION OF A CALL COMMITTEE. THIS GROUP, COMPRISED OF THE CHURCH COUNCIL PLUS 10
-12 ADDITIONAL MEMBERS OF THE CONGREGATION WILL REPRESENT A CROSS SECTION OF THE EAST SIDE
MEMBERSHIP. THE COMMITTEE WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REVIEWING THE QUALIFICATIONS OF POTENTIAL
CANDIDATES, PARTICIPATING IN INTERVIEWS, DOING SITE VISITS, AND ULTIMATELY MAKING A
RECOMMENDATION TO THE CONGREGATION.
A LETTER WAS SENT TO ELEVEN INDIVIDUALS ASKING THEM TO SERVE ON THE CALL COMMITTEE. SOME OF
THESE WERE INDIVIDUALS WHO HAD VOLUNTEERED TO SERVE AND OTHERS WERE NAMES SUGGESTED BY THE
CHURCH COUNCIL OR BY OTHER MEMBERS OF THE CONGREGATION. RESPONSE TO THIS LETTER HAS BEEN VERY
POSITIVE. AS SOON AS THAT LIST IS COMPLETE, THE NAMES WILL BE SHARED WITH THE
CONGREGATION.
THE SECOND PART OF THE PROCESS IS EQUALLY IMPORTANT AND REQUIRES YOUR PARTICIPATION. WE NEED TO
DEVELOP A PROFILE OF THE PERSON WE WANT AS OUR NEXT ASSOCIATE PASTOR. WHAT ARE THE
CHARACTERISTICS, THE SKILLS, THE STRENGTHS WE WANT AND NEED IN THIS PERSON? TO CREATE THIS PROFILE,
WE NEED YOUR INPUT.
ON JULY 13 AND 20, MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH COUNCIL HELD COUNCIL CHATS BETWEEN SERVICES. DURING
THIS TIME, WE VISITED WITH SEVERAL MEMBERS OF THE CONGREGATION AND RECEIVED EXCELLENT INPUT. IF
YOU HAVE NOT YET HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS, PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO CHAT WITH
A MEMBER OF THE COUNCIL . IF YOU PREFER, YOU MAY PUT YOUR THOUGHTS IN WRITING AND LEAVE THEM IN
MY MAILBOX. ALL COMMENTS WILL BE SHARED WITH THE COMMITTEE.
THERE WILL CONTINUE TO BE ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR INPUT THROUGHOUT THE PROCESS, AND WE
WILL KEEP THE CONGREGATION INFORMED AS WE PROCEED.
WITH YOUR HELP AND WITH GOD’S BLESSINGS, WE WILL FIND THE RIGHT ASSOCIATE PASTOR FOR EAST SIDE.
CARLA MIDDLEN, COUNCIL PRESIDENT

Guatemala Mission Trip—June 2014
The Guatemala Mission Trip was a success, and our group returned safely thanks to your prayers. Thanks
to East Side’s offerings and donations, we were able to bring down 20 wheelchairs, 6 quilts, 15 pillowcase
dresses, 163 pair of socks, 42 pair of underwear, 7 pair of shoes, 11 school supplies, and 9 ‘ABC’ books
colored by the Sunday School children. Throughout the week the group was able to: Work on various
tasks at the Hope Haven factory; Deliver food/dresses/quilts to low-income families in the city of
Xenacoj; Fix wheelchairs for disabled children at Hermano Pedro’s Hospital in Antigua; Bring shoes/socks
to an orphanage near Antigua; Seat and adjust 19 children at a wheelchair distribution. In their
downtime the group was able to participate in local cultures, and visit Lake Atitlan (surrounded by three
volcanoes). We should all be proud that we belong to a church that
pulled together to support this trip.
Pictured above is Andrea Herrera, who
received a wheelchair at the distribution.

Tom was a single guy living at home with his father and working in the family business. When he
found out he was going to inherit a fortune once his sickly father died, he decided he needed a wife
with which to share his fortune.
One evening at an investment meeting, he spotted the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her
natural beauty took his breath away.
he said to her,
Impressed, the woman obtained his business card. Three days later, she became his stepmother.
Women are so much better at estate planning than men.
Good estate planning can prevent this! Be sure you have a plan,
and remember the East Side Endowment Fund in your will!

“We are often the answer to our own prayers.” This statement,
made by Pastor Wangsness in his last sermon really stuck with me. So
often we ask “Why doesn’t someone…?” or “Who will….” when the
answer to both questions should be “What can I do?”
PAGE 8
FOOD FOR
THOUGHT
Somehow we think that whatever we might do is not enough, but what we need to remember is that
whatever we do can be a beginning and can inspire others to do step forward and make their own
contribution. It is never about one person or one group; it is about all of us working together.
For example, a few months ago a generous donor in our congregation gave $2200 to be used for the
rejuvenation of various rooms and areas in the church. The results were amazing. Groups and individuals
stepped forward and donated their time, their talents, and additional funds to transform the two Sunday
School gathering places, the two upstairs meeting rooms, and the upstairs hallway. All of those involved
in these projects realized that they could make a significance difference by stepping forward and
becoming involved instead of sitting back and waiting for someone else to do it. This is an example for all
of us.
We cannot let “the lawsuit” hamper East Side Lutheran from moving forward. There is much we can do
both within our church and in our surrounding neighborhood. All it takes is for us to be willing to step
forward and say “We can and we will do this!”
Take a minute to think about our needs. What are the things we pray for? What can we do to help
answer those prayers? This list is endless. It is all about being proactive, not reactive. We pledged to be
“in the neighborhood for good.” Our neighborhood is our own congregation, our immediate
neighbors, our community, and our world.
Every single one of us can make a positive difference in our church, our community, and in the world
around us. We cannot wait for that mysterious “someone” to step forward. Instead, we must ask
ourselves every day: “What can I do to make a difference?” If we do so, amazing things will happen
and we will be a part of them. Remember that we are often the answer to our own prayers.
Carla Middlen, Congregation President
Union Gospel Mission Lamplighters doesn’t meet in the summer, but that doesn’t mean you
can’t give a monetary gift or help prepare and serve meals. Each nourishing meal is $2.15, so a gift
of $25.80 will feed 12 people. The mission’s Vacation Bible Time (VBT) shows great numbers:


80 children attended
27 received their own personal Bible


400 meals served to just the young people
150 meals served after the Gospel program to parents/friends
For more information on giving, contact the Gospel Mission or the church office.
Lamplighters’ meetings will begin again in September. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

ROOF FUND ESTABLISHED!
At its July meeting, East Side’s Congregation Council officially established
the ROOF FUND. It is of no surprise to anyone that our roof is in need of replacement. We have been
patiently (and impatiently) waiting for a decision from the SD Supreme Court regarding our lawsuit appeal.
With our current mortgage we cannot borrow additional funds (or make additional monthly payments!) So
the fund exists for all who would like to contribute to it. Donations large and small can be given to the Roof
Fund but please note:
Our General Fund needs remain and funds cannot be diverted from that Fund.
The Building Fund (mortgage) needs faithful monthly support as well.
Various roofing options are being explored. Cost estimates for replacing the sanctuary roof as well as the
building addition roof range between $250,000 to $400,000!
The WELCA Synodical Leadership Workshop/Convention was held in Brookings on June
20th and 21st. Three women of our congregation attended the gathering: Nancy Renner, Patty
Johnson and Karel Amend. Below are notes that the women took throughout the workshops.
Theme: “Who? Me? Women of Faith Making a Difference”
Pastor Nyla Schoeld began by challenging us with the thought, “What does God require of you?”
The basic scripture passages were from Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know I have plans for you says the
Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Micah 6:8 – “He has
showed you, o man, what is good: and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to
love kindness, and to walk humbly with the Lord.” After using examples from her life, she
encouraged us to “act boldly to activate our faith in Christ”.
Several sessions were offered – How to best use our monetary
resources in our Christian life, Eating healthy and economically, Our
outreach to those in need, Working with refugees, How to help by not
helping, Global missions, etc.
“Don’t judge others – Don’t impose your ways on others”
Lisa Hanna-Riddle teaches English to refugee pre-school children in the Sioux Falls schools. The
stresses each child experiences are unique because of their background. One shouldn’t prejudge
where they are coming from. One 8 year old told of having a grand house and lifestyle – we assume
the child is dreaming, no doubt. Then at parent-teacher conferences, the father of the child confirmed her story. He was an executive in the government in his country. Here, he works 2 low-paying
jobs to support his family and those left behind. Prejudging by what we think we see in others is a
common error in our lives.
We would hope that more women of the ELCA would take the opportunity to attend future
assemblies of WELCA. You will see and hear about the great opportunities we have and can create
in our Christian lives.

SILENT BELLS:
For the first time in centuries, church bells didn't ring and no mass was
celebrated the last Sunday of June in Mosul, the Iraqi city overrun by the radical Islamic group called
ISIS. Christians in Mosul have been forced to pay a tax for their non-Muslim status. When one
Christian family said it didn’t have the money, the mother and daughter were raped. The husband and
father was so traumatized by the event that he committed suicide. By tradition, Mosul is the site of the
prophet Jonah’s burial. Most Christians have fled from Mosul, some going to Kurdistan.
