Craig’s List…
WOW! What a banquet! There were over 80 people at our annual banquet!!! WELL DONE guys! What a privilege
to sit and see all of you there supporting our club! I sincerely hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did. A bit
THANK YOU goes out to those of you that had models moved to other classes and didn't make a big stink about it
too! I really don't like doing that, but every year it seems we need to do that. I want you to know that the contest
committee tries hard to make sure models are in the proper place, and we appreciate the good attitudes! THANK
you for that!
Once again you guys showed what this club is really all about with the additional support of Doug and Denise
Martin with your contributions to their cause! Elsewhere in this newsletter is a note from them expressing their
thanks to all of you! I am once again blown away by ALL OF YOU for your kindness and generosity!
Please forgive my ineptness in handing out the trophies to all the winners. I get all caught up in "stuff" before the
meeting, trying to make sure things go smoothly and the organization and sometimes lose my way! Thanks Jim
for standing back there with an exasperated look on your face and keeping me on track! Congrats to all the
winners! I love seeing the creativity that is in this club. The quality continually keeps getting better every year
which is a tribute to those that share their knowledge and "know how" to others!
Thanks as well for working with us this year by prepaying guys. That was a big help, albeit, extra work for out
treasurer. It helped us immensely to stay on budget and be good stewards of our finances! We actually came in
under budget this year and are in decent shape for this time of year.
We start the show season this month!!!! The end of the month is one of the highlights of the year for your prez
with NNL East, followed the next month by the NNL Mid Atlantic. I look forward to these every year and can't wait
to see what guys have been building all winter from other areas.
I'm babbling now as I am wont to do on occasion, but want to express my heartfelt appreciation to each and
every one of you that shares this great club. With that I am done writing! IF I have forgotten anything of great
importance, forgive me, and you may tell me at club! Now..BUILD SOMETHING!
Left over parts from the Slingster Dragster kit:
1) Driver figure - PN 60, 61, 62, 63 & 64.
2) Hemi Injectors - PN 22 & 23 (2 ea)
3) Chevy Injectors - PN 35 & 36 (4 ea)
Will refund postage or see me at the meeting.

Where to start?
Well, Jack Bouman fired off an email diming out Terry Adams as a winner at a recent show.
“Just wanted to let you know in case you want to insert it in the newsletter Terry Adams won best of show at
Pittsburgh over the weekend for his 55 wagon over 100 models in attendance. a well attended IPMS event. He
was one of 4 gold Medal Recipients as well.”
Alright, enough about that. Continuing on, I wanted thank everyone who attended the banquet. This year’s new
reservation system seemed to work on a couple levels; the club stood to avoid getting jammed up by paying out
of pocket for no shows, and attendance was apparently not affected one bit. Craig said more than 80 people
attended?! That is impressive, and to the untrained eye, the hall looked as full as any other year, if not more so!
It sounds like this practice makes sense to continue in future years.
The tables were graced with some very impressive models and though I recognized some that have been there
before, it was great to see so many for the very first time. We have a very active club full of talented members.
You owe yourselves a round of applause. For a group our size to be such a classy bunch is a testament to the
people who comprise the membership.
Speaking of membership, the deadline for 2014 renewal was last month. I’m purging the email list for newsletter
distribution so if you aren’t reading this, well…
Membership stands at 92 paid members, 22 dropouts and a shortlist of exempt members. “Exempt” means you
are a pretty much a lifer. “Drop Out” means whether people intended/intend to remain a member or not, we
haven’t heard from them and the line has to be drawn at some point. That point was the March meeting. As a
point of information, the percentage of dropouts is not unusual based on history. For many years, we have
generally been gaining more members than we lose. The graphic below shows how the total list on file breaks
out.

Open Letter From The Martin Family
Dear Members,
My name is Denise Martin. Many of you don't know me but know my husband Doug. I wanted to write to
each and every one of the members of the CPMCC for their heart felt generously and unselfish
contributions, to help make my dream of obtaining an asst/companion dog come true. When Doug
handed me the donation box, I cried tears of joy, happiness and deep friendship with people I don't
even know.. Due to my deteriorating medicinal condition, this dog will enable me to get out of the house
without fear of falling or falling ill and not being able to inform anyone. This dog will be a major help to
Doug, who right now must maintain the house, do the wash, grocery shopping, take me to my
appointments as well as all the normal items that show up on any regular" honey due list" And the
greatest news of all is on Tuesday March 4, 2014 I was formally approved to receive an "Canine Partner
for Life. Now the fun begins, my first training meeting will be March 14, 2014 where they will start
choosing a dog to meet my needs and then start training them for everything I will need help with and
this may take up to a full year of additional training These dogs are very expensive costing Canine
Partners for Life $29,000 per dog to raise and place and they ask only $3000.00 per placement. At this
point I am half way there with $1500.00. And I am sure with my prayers, the grace of God and the
generosity of others like yourselves I will meet my goal. It is my promise that once I complete my
training, that with the clubs approval I will bring my "friend to the end" in to meet all you wonderful
people.
Again many, many thanks. This dog will be as much a part of the CPMCC as Doug or I am and I hope to
make him or her an honorary member.
Sincerely
Denise, Doug and Puppy Martin
2014 Membership Reminder
The number of members that renewed during
2013 and the start of 2014 was outstanding. Of
the 119 names we have on file, 96 are current
and in good standing. 2 members are listed as
confirmed dropouts, and the remaining 21 will join
them by the time you’re reading this newsletter.
Remember, if you are a new member who joined
in September 2013 or later, you were covered for
2014. If you intended to renew, but are reading
this in a borrowed copy of the newsletter because
you are now “unsubscribed” because of unpaid
dues, please contact Tony Shanko at once.

Getting Older And Getting Better
We celebrated our anniversary on March 1st. For
those skilled at mathematics, and who own a
calendar, knowing we starting in 1986, it’s no
secret we’re now 28 years old. Yay for us!
Arguably (because people tend to like being
argumentative) we’re the longest continuously
running model car club in the US!
Not bad for a club centered around a hobby that
at one time onlookers claimed was dying a slow,
painful death. They were wrong about the hobby,
and we’re here, stronger than ever. Take a bow!

Notes on Monthly Contests
1st, 2nd or 3rd place-winning entries from previous months are not
eligible for competition in subsequent monthly contests. You are
welcome to display, but please place a “No Vote” note near your
model. Please put your name and model entered on the sheet at the
president’s table so we can identify you if you win.
When voting, please write legibly on the ballot. Our old eyes and
somebody’s sloppy handwriting are a bad combination!
If you are the only participant entering in a monthly open contest, you
earn only the points for first place. There must be a second competitor
in order for a participant to earn points for any additional places they
are awarded. In the case of potential sweeps, the 3rd (or 6th) place
points will be awarded to the next closest entrant.
Don’t forget the “Just Cool Stuff” table! WIPs, old builds or just
cool stuff not competing in a contest!
Thanks to EVERYONE for their participation!!!

Wotsinabox? Slingster!
(Submitted by guest contributor Darryl Peters – Ed.)
The Slingster Dragster model kit is arguably one of the
most anticipated model car kits in Monogram’s recent
history. They addressed two big issues with this kit; 1).
They “resurrected” the old highly prized Sizzler
Dragster subject, and 2). They did it in 1/25th scale
instead of the original’s 1/20th scale.
The similarity between the box tops is obvious. The
new kit consists of over 100 parts on five white plastic
trees, two chromed trees, a clear canopy, and four new
tires in black rubber. There is also an extensive, multicolor glossy decal sheet. The instruction booklet is 37
pages long and covers building options for 6 different
models. You can only build one complete model from
this kit but your spare parts box will be quite happy.
There are many more than 6 building options when
mixing and matching all the options included in this kit.
A little kit bashing will also open the door to a larger
number of building options. A 60s era Chassis
Research dragster with an injected flathead, Nailhead,
or blown early Caddy or Olds V-8 would be an easy kit
bashing build.
Monogram missed an opportunity to capitalize on the
inspiration for the Bantam-bodied competition coupe
model, namely providing decals for Al Bergler’s
Aggravation A/C coupe. That dragster from the early
60’s obviously heavily influenced the original Sizzler
coupe model and consequently the Slingster coupe
Model as well. Fear not, the aftermarket comes to the
rescue and Scale Auto Details offers the correct decals
for the Aggravation coupe in its early configuration as
well as a resin stack of bar bell weights for the front of
the dragster!
The kit has two engines with 4 different build options;
blown or injected early Hemi and a blown or injected
small block Chevy engine.
Since the molds for this kit were apparently reverse
engineered from the original Sizzler kit, except reduced
to 1/25th scale, the engine block was split vertically in
the old Monogram tradition, yielding a seam down the
center of the oil pan. I was never a fan of the way
Monogram broke down engines in their old kits but
Classic Plastic Vol. 28 No.4
Classic Plastic Vol. 28 No.4
when assembled with liquid glue (I use IPS Weld-On
#4), one can easily remove the seam without filler.
I also found that masking the oil pan was easy so
painting the engine was not overly complicated with
this parts break down.
Nearly all parts, especially the frame rails, were quite
delicate in their appearance, much like the fantastic
Kurtis Kraft midget kits, and it was obvious that
Monogram took great pains to mold to scale when
possible. The engineering that was done on the
predecessor kit more than 50 years ago is impressive.
I encountered absolutely no fit problems during
assembly. The simplified nature of this kit’s ancestor,
which was released in the early 60’s, resulted in a lack
of some important engine accessories, such as a fuel
pump and oil filter. Do not despair, the aftermarket
again comes to the rescue and a very prominent
aftermarket resin caster will have an upgrade parts
pack available, by the time you read this review, with
two different fuel pumps and additional resin parts to
super detail this outstanding kit.
Despite the excellent castings, I thought the slicks
were slightly too small in width as well as diameter. I
substituted resin wheels and slicks from Ma’s Resin
which required slightly opening up the coupe body’s
wheel arches. I used the weight stack and the decals
from Scale Auto Details as well as some scratch
building and other aftermarket parts (Arrowhead
Aluminum, Detail Master, and Model Car Garage) to
detail my version of the Aggravation coupe.
I airbrushed a base coat of Tamiya Silver Leaf (TS-30)
onto the body, frame, and engine. After drying them in
a dehydrator for 24 hours, I then airbrushed a few wet
coats of Tamiya Transparent Red (TS-74) over the
base coat. The parts went back into the dehydrator for
another 24 hours before applying the decals. After the
decals dried over night in a dehydrator, I airbrushed
two wet coats of Dupli-Color Clear Gloss onto the parts.
This was the first time I used a Tamiya Transparent
color as a candy color and was pleased with the
appearance.

Wotsinabox? Slingster!
▲ Plated Parts
▲ White Parts
▲ Sizzler Box Art
▲ Decal Sheet
I highly recommend this kit. The Slingster is a fun
kit to build and I intend building a few more
variations, likely with 1950-1960’s era engines,
such as a flathead (with a SCoT blower and
carbs?), blown Olds, injected Buick Nailhead,
blown Pontiac, etc. I will likely change the rear
wheels and slicks based on old photos of early
Chassis Research dragsters. I can visualize earlystyle unpolished Halibrand rear wheels and wide
white wall slicks with photo-etched spoke front
wheels (from Machined Aluminum Specialties) on
my next build. Enjoy this kit and buy a few to
reward Revell/Monogram for their effort so they
will continue this trend of providing us with
resurrected old models and fascinating new
subjects. Maybe resurrecting the UNCERTAIN “T”
is a possibility. I am sure that model is also on the
wish list of a few modelers just as this kit was.
▲ Instruction Sheet
I wired and plumbed the engine and mounted a
60s-style tachometer on the dragster inner body. I
scratch built “Coors” cans to cover the ends of the
zoomie headers and a small red shop rag to stuff
into the injector scoop.

I refined the rear of the car similar to the facelift edition, used real mesh instead of the kit ones for the
air intakes, and HobbyDesign rims, PE set, Tamiya paint and 2k automotive clear, some leftover rear
wing from the parts box. I had fitment issue with the side windows so I cut them into pieces and left out
the middle part.
