BUILDING ON TRADITION GALA SATURDAY JUNE 13 The NFCT 7th Annual Building on Tradition Gala: “It Takes Two” will be held on at
Stonewalls and will include food, raffles, entertainment by NFCT members including a
preview of the Youth on Stage Summer Show: All Shook Up. Individual tickets to the
Gala will be $100, but we hope that many of you will consider matching up with a friend
and buying an “It Takes Two” ticket that includes 2 tickets and recognition in the Gala
program. Also, new this year, for groups of people that reserve 8 or more tickets together,
we will reserve tables for you. All INCOME (not only profits) will be matched by Michael

FOOD DRIVES KICK OFF SATURDAY JUNE 13
Many people in Southold Town suffer from food shortage and rely on C.A.S.T.’s Food
Pantry for food assistance. The C.A.S.T. (Community Action Southold Town)’s first
Supermarket Food Drive of the season will take place at the following locations:
Greenport IGA: 9:30am - 1:30pm
Southold IGA: 9:45am - 1:45pm
King Kullen, Cutchogue: 10:00am - 2:00pm
Waldbaums, Mattituck: 10:15am - 2:15pm
C.A.ST. conducts 4 Supermarket Food Drives a year. The next C.A.S.T. Food Drive will
be held on Saturday, August 8th. C.A.S.T.’s food pantry is a valuable resource that helps
struggling families stretch their monthly budget by providing basic food items. If you are
unable to make a contribution to the food drive at a local supermarket on June 13th,
but wish to make a contribution, look for C.A.S.T. collection bins at stores, where nonperishable food items can be dropped. In addition, C.A.S.T. accepts donations of nonperishable food items and gift cards, at its Greenport office Monday through Friday from

Southold Historical Society’s Yard Sale SATURDAY June 13

HOOKED RUG EXHIBIT OPENS SATURDAY JUNE 13
The Southold Historical Society exhibition of works by fiber artist, Marilyn Bottjer,
which will open to the public in the Cosden-Price Gallery in the Reichert Family Center,
located at 54127 Main Road, Southold. An opening reception for the artist will be held,
Friday, June 12th, 2015 from 5:30-7 pm.
Bottjer is best known for her colorful and inventive hooked wall hangings, which can
depict anything from local and regional buildings and landscapes, to special events and
independent creations that appear almost abstract in nature. Bottjer is both an artist and
teacher who has offered classes at a variety of prominent institutions, including at the
American Folk Art Museum in New York City.
Her creations have been featured at major museums and cultural institutions, including
the Farnsworth Art Museum, located in Rockland, Maine; the American Folk Art
Museum, located in New York City; The University of Connecticut Gallery, located
in Stamford, Connecticut; and the Brookfield Craft Center, located in Brookfield,
Connecticut. Her works have also been featured in a number of important publications
on rug hooking and on television on the Home and Garden Television (HGTV) network.
The exhibit will be on display through June 27, Thursday-Saturday, 1-4pm. For more

“VICTORIAN HIGH TEA SUNDAY JUNE 14 The Southold Historical Society will be hosting a Victorian Tea in conjunction with
the First Presbyterian Church of Southold in honor of the Southold Town’s 375th
Anniversary. The tea will be held at the Historical Society’s Museum Complex which
is located at 55200 Main Road, Southold. Along with a scenic setting, attendees will
enjoy tea sandwiches and assorted sweets. Tea will be presented in individual teapots
and each table will be decorated with a table prize of a tea cup planted with flowers. The

SHABBAT AT THE BEACH CONTINUING A BUCOLIC TRADITION
FRIDAY NIGHTS STARTING JUNE 19
What could be better than celebrating creation overlooking L I Sound here on the North
Fork? All are invited to join North Fork Reform Synagogue to celebrate Friday night
services at Kenney’s Beach in Southold. Bring a picnic and beach chairs...food to share
if you like. The children will romp, eat and enjoy themselves. Have supper [around 6:30
p.m.], and services about 7:30 p.m. as we light the Sabbath candles, sing the Kiddush over
the wine and say the blessing for the challah bread.
Watch the beauty of the setting sun over the waters of Long Island Sound and welcome
the Sabbath in song, prayer, friendship and meditation.
This is the seventh year for Beach Services and they grow more popular with each sunset
over the Sound. A wonderful experience for children and all of us...appreciation of
creation as we are fortunate enough to live it on our North Fork.
On the rare occasion when the weather doesn’t cooperate, come to the home NFRS
shares with the Cutchogue Presbyterian Church on Main Road. Information at 631 7225712; northforkreformsynagogue.org. The first in the series on June 19th will be shared
with the other North Fork congregations, Temple Israel and Congregation Tifereth Israel
for a communal meal starting at 5:30 p.m. For the balance of the season services join us

CATCH-A-STAR LITERARY LUNCHEON THURSDAY, JULY 16
Memoirist and fiction writer Abigail Thomas will be the guest speaker at the annual
Catch-A-Star Literary Luncheon, to be held at noon at the Sound View Restaurant
in Greenport. This is the 20th year that Paula Shengold has arranged and chaired the
summer luncheon celebrating arts and letters, sponsored by the Daughters of Israel group
of Congregation Tifereth Israel synagogue in Greenport. The event typically attracts more
than 100 guests from the North and South Forks, Suffolk and Westchester Counties, and
Connecticut.
Stephen King says Abigail Thomas’s new memoir, What Comes Next and How to Like
It, “fills memory with living breath.” He calls her the Emily Dickinson of memoirists, as
so much of her book’s wisdom is “between the lines and in the white spaces.” Glowing
reviews of the new book, which addresses the joys of her life as well as aspects of growing
older, duplicate those of her two previous memoirs, A Three Dog Life and Safekeeping,
which focus on experiences during her younger days.
Lunch will feature locally grown foods, and guests will have an opportunity to take
home great raffle prizes. Advance reservations are suggested. Tickets at $35 each can be

JUNE: “Coastal Visions” — Oil Paintings by Carol Gold
Carol’s show will feature her continued visual dialogue with Northern and Southern
seascapes and landscapes as large oil paintings on linen. Admirers of Carol’s art say that
they feel they can “walk right into her paintings” or “jump right into the water”. All are
welcome at a reception to meet the artist on Sunday, June 14th from 1 to 3 p.m.
IN THE DISPLAY CASE: Marble Carvings by Gary Crowther
JULY: “Variations on a Dream” — Paintings and mixed media by Lois Levy
Lois Levy brings her background as a professional commercial artist (fashion illustrator)
to her work. She says, “I am as comfortable with representational art as I am with mixed
media abstraction. I delight in pushing boundaries and marching to my own beat; never
limiting myself to just one form of expression or medium.” All are welcome at a reception
to meet the artist on Friday, July 10th from 5 to 7 p.m.
IN THE DISPLAY CASE: Jewelry by Wanda Nardolillo — Wanda makes her beautiful
“one-of-a-kind” jewelry pieces from found and recycled materials.

On Exhibit until Sept. 19 - From Shore to Shore: Boatbuilders and Boatyards of Long
Island, in collaboration with Long Island Traditions. Since the 19th century, LI and
Westchester have been home to many boatbuilders, ranging from traditional builders such
as Gil Smith of Patchogue to the 35 modern builders featured in this exhibit. Join us for
this celebration of our region’s great tradition of boat building! Exhibition also includes
rarely seen historic maritime images by Hal B. Fullerton as well as a magnificent maritime
painting and sculpture exhibit curated by J. Russell Jinishian and Fred Polhemus.
Saturday June 13 – 1:00 pm – From Shore to Shore Presentation: Christopher Hale’s
Half-Model-Making Demonstrations. Boatbuilder Christopher Hale will demonstrate a
method of half-model making by utilizing specialized hand tools and line drawings of
specific boats. He will craft working boats indigenous to the South Shore of Long Island,
including a 1970s-era Garvey and a sail-powered tonging boat from the early 1900s.

Thursday June 18 – 6:00 pm – From Shore to Shore Presentation: J. Russell Jinishian on
the Maritime Art of Yesterday and Today. The 45-minute presentation will chronicle the
history of marine art from its beginnings to the present day, highlighting key artists and

OFF-SITE EXHIBITION: Dental Instruments: Past and Present at Stony Brook University Health Sciences Library - now through November 2015. Travel back in time to see
instruments used by dentist in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The exhibit showcases
the fascinating tools and practices that are precursors to today’s dental instruments and

The Southold Recreation Department’s search has been
unsuccessful for a certified and qualified swimming instructor
to run the 2015 swimming lessons program, and as of this
writing, the Rec Department will not be offering swimming
lessons at area beaches as we have done in the past. There may still be time to run an abbreviated schedule
if we can hire an instructor soon, so if you know of anyone
who would be interested and qualified, please contact the
