This revision of the Commuter Rail Book of Standard Plans Track and Road way, dated
October 28, 1992, represents a complete replacement of the previous document dated
November 17, 1986. Plan holders are hereby directed to remove ali material between the
binders of their present books and replace with the enclosed package.
Of the 86 plans in the previous book only 16 were not revised. Those 16 are included in this
package to simplify updating the books. A total of 55 new plans have been added.
The new plans incl ude:
Add itional material on clearances
S ide track installation
Hot mix asphalt underlayment at turnouts
Transitions from track of varying track modulus
Frost bracing and blocking
Various spikes
Plates fo r use with screw spikes in turnouts
A different turnout design using floating heel blocks and longer switch rails.
Derails
Bumping posts
Grade crossing
Fences & gates
Additional signs
Many of the turnout detail pians such as vertical switch rods, switch plates and the frogs are
common to both turnout designs. The original plans for those elements have been modified
to allow their use with either design.
As an aid to find ing the various turnouts, an explanation of the plan numbering system may
be helpful. Special trackwork and related material are numbered in the 2000 series. The two
middle numbers denote the frog numher of the originai design turnout: that is, 2080, 2 100,
2150 and 2200 number series are for number 8, 10,15, & 20 turnouts respectively. The ;;~w
design, which is a revision to the original, adds one to the middle number so that 2110, 2160
and 2210 number series ir.di~ates the new design for number 10, IS & 20 turnouts. As noted
in the paragraph above, the plans of details ~uch as switch plates and sw itch rods are common
to both turnout designs .
Another significant change is that all resilient fa,tener turnout pl ates have been changed to
provide for lagging with screw spikes rather than lock spikes. Lock spikes will now be used
only in convent ional timber and ballasted track construction outside of special trackwork
units .
As informat ion, the following plans from the 11 - 17-86 issue have been deleted and not
replaced:

In addition, the fonowi ng plans have had the numbers modified:

There are currently two turnout des igns in the standards. The original design wh ich uses
solid heel hlocks is retained. Minor revisions have been made to that des ign including the
rail layout and insulated jo int locations . There are new designs for tJ,e number 10,15 & 20
turnouts. TIle new design features 60 foot undercut stock rail s, longer switch rails, float ing
heel blocks , uniform risers and 19'-6" long bonded insulated joint plug rails . These turnouts
are ident ified as "Floating Heel Block" turnouts to distinguish them from the original des ign.
Unless otherwise specified , the new floating heel block turnouts shall be f"rnished with any
new ord ers. The orig inal design of 1986 will be used only for replacement of material or
certain specific applications when approved by the Chi ef Engineering Officer.
