The Memphremagog region
The Memphremagog region gets its name from Lake Memphremagog.
This expansive, 42-kilometre lake extends to the American border. It is
a stretch of water that thrills boating enthusiasts, including those who
love to sail. In fact, it can take a sailboat nine hours to get from Magog
to Newport (USA) – without a motor, of course!
Memphremagog is one of the most beautiful areas in the Eastern
Townships. Its natural beauty and the concentration of mountains and
lakes nestled within are its most distinctive features. These physical
characteristics contribute to an exceptional quality of life that is the
envy of many. Two mountain ranges cross the region from north to
south. The first is part of the Appalachian range, and boasts impressive
mountain peaks: Orford, Owl’s Head and Chagnon, among others. The
second is known as the Bunker range. It defines the boundaries of
physical elements like Lake Memphremagog and Lake Massawippi.
From the perspective of this unique natural heritage, it’s not surprising
that resort areas developed. Beginning in the 19th century, wealthy
families from the southern United States purchased agricultural land
along the shores of places like lakes Memphremagog and Massawippi
to build imposing estates. Gradually, these magnificent locations
became more widely accessible and attracted people from different
walks of life.
Did you know that Memphremagog is considered the oldest tourist
destination in Quebec? Resort tourism is the region’s second largest
economic sector. The largest is the manufacturing sector dating back to
the first years of colonization, which also played a role in the cultural,
religious and architectural heritage of the Memphremagog region.

Today, Memphremagog is divided in four regions:
Magog - Orford, Border Region, Massawippi Valley and Missisquoi Valley. We are glad to present each of them.
Magog – Orford
MO
Magog
Magog was founded at the end of the 18th century. The
economy then was built on the wood industry. The arrival of the
textile mills (1884) changed the face of this little village into
that of a city. In 2002, Magog merged with Canton de Magog
and the village of Omerville. Today, its economy is diversified
and the population enjoys an exceptional quality of life in an
inviting environment. Its panoramic roads are among the most
beautiful and provide, at times, a view of Lake Memphremagog
and many affluent homes bordering the lake, while at other
times a view of historic monuments such as the Saint-Benoit-du-Lac Abbey.
Orford Township
Although for a long time it remained uninhabited due to its
mountainous area, today this municipality is a favourite spot for
vacationers with several prominent resort hotels. In addition,
Parc national du Mont-Orford offers a wide variety of activities,
and lovers of skiing can enjoy the ski resort at Mount Orford.

Stanstead Township (Georgeville and Fitch Bay)
Near Fitch Bay, we can see a 28 metres long covered bridge
(1881). Georgeville invites you to its general store, which is still
operating. Georgeville also boasts several heritage buildings
and a wharf offering a view of Lake Memphremagog.
Ogden (Graniteville, Tomifobia)
Covered with country roads, this area conceals impressive
granite quarries, some of which have been in operation since
1890. On the 247 South, this territory offers one tree tunnel:
Applegrove (near the Fitch Bay covered bridge).
Stanstead (Beebe, Rock Island)
One of the particularities of this area comes from its proximity
to and its bordering on the United States. A bridge was built
in 1802, between Derby and Rock Island, to promote access.
Around Beebe, Canusa Street (247 North) is divided down the
centre by the border.

Massawippi valley
MAV
Ayer’s Cliff
Known as Ayer’s Flat, the village became Ayer’s Cliff in 1904.
This change coincided with the desire to make it more attractive
to investors who were becoming more numerous with the arrival of the railroad. Ayer’s Cliff provides a magnificent view of Lake Massawippi.
Hatley Township
Also known as Minton, this land has beautiful scenery and views
of Lake Massawippi. A Neo-Gothic style church built in 1894 is
also worthy of mention.
North Hatley
Quickly the development of the village was associated with
vacations. Although in the beginning (1897), agriculture,
woodcutting and potash production represented the bases of
the economy, the beauty of this corner of the Eastern Townships
quickly motivated tourists to make it a choice destination.
Sainte-Catherine-de-Hatley
This little municipality also goes under the name of Katevale.
The church (1881) and its rectory occupy a predominant place in
the centre of the village. It is possible to see a superb triptych
here (work of the painter Christine Carrière).
Village de Hatley
This village was an important centre of the region around 1820.
There was a potash and whisky business here. Around 1874,
the village lost its importance to the benefit of North Hatley.
Its rural appearance is an open invitation to appreciate the
country scenery.

Missisquoi valley
MIV
Austin
Austin was founded in 1793 by Nicholas Austin. It has a round
barn and silo, and historic monuments (1907). For many
visitors, its proximity to the Saint-Benoît-du-Lac Abbey and its
striking viewpoints make Austin a stop not to be missed. EAst Bolton
Bolton welcomed its first American colonists in 1808. The mines
were operated up until around 1876 when this market dropped.
Today, St-Patrick’s Church (1875), the United Church (1879) as
well as the municipal building still stand as witnesses of history.
Potton Township (Mansonville, Vale Perkins,
Highwater, Knowlton Landing, Dunkin)
Bordering the southwest of Lake Memphremagog, this
territory offers stunning views of the lake and the Appalachians,
especially Owl’s Head and its ski resort. It is rich in heritage.
Incidentally, it is possible to see a round barn right in the
centre of Mansonville.
Eastman
Officially founded in 1889, the village of Eastman was named in honour of John Eastman. At the heart of the village, is a lake whose name changed from Missisquoi to Eastman to
become Lac d’Argent. The municipality is well known for its
picturesque charm.
Saint-Benoît-du-Lac
The smallest municipality in the Eastern Townships, where you
will find a monastery (Abbey) of Benedictine monks. These
monks produce apple cider and cheese and are renowned for
their Gregorian chants. Stukely-Sud (Village)
Inhabited since the beginning of the 19th century, mining was
once carried out here. The history of the village is connected to
des Diligences Road, which, due to its charming scenery, is a
road full of interesting discoveries.
Saint-Étienne-de-Bolton
Saint-Étienne-de-Bolton, tucked between Sutton and Orford
Mountains and a few kilometres from Lake Memphremagog,
is situated in the heart of the most sought after tourist centre in
the Eastern Townships. Complete with its lookout over majestic
horizons, this municipality is a haven for individuals in search of
peaceful scenery.
