Worldwide Foundation for Credit Unions
Worldwide Foundation for Credit Unions 20 1 4 ANNUAL REPO RT B UILDING A G LO B A L CO M M U N I T Y WORLDWIDE FOUNDATION FOR CREDIT UNIONS 2014 ANNUAL REPORT Director’s Message Belief that the right financial tools can move poor households out of poverty drives the World Council’s work around the globe. In conjunction with World Council’s development projects and support from the Worldwide Foundation for Credit Unions, millions of people transitioned from everyday survival to long-term planning for their future. Through our International Partnership Program and Global Women’s Leadership Network, worldwide connections were made, lessons were shared across borders and cultures, communities were empowered and new opportunities for collaboration were established. Yet, there is much work to be done. The World Bank estimates more than 2.5 billion households do not have access to a safe place to save or take out loans. Women in particular are excluded from the formal financial system. Credit unions are uniquely positioned to tackle these global issues; and in return, increase their membership, revenue, competitiveness and growth. As the leading international trade association and development agency for financial inclusion, we are committed to developing innovative tools, technology, and programs that will strengthen the economic security of communities worldwide while also helping our credit unions grow. In 2014, we set a global challenge to add 50 million new credit union members by 2020. You have the power to help achieve this goal and make a difference. Contributions to the Worldwide Foundation helps advance World Council’s efforts; and in the following pages, you will witness both the local and global impact you helped us make. It is a privilege to work alongside our global credit union community and we are sincerely grateful for the generous support! Calyn Ostrowski Worldwide Foundation Director 2014 H I G H L I G H T S International Partnership Program The International Partnership Program supported 20 credit union partnerships and facilitated 15 educational exchanges between emerging and developed credit union systems. A Financial Management Workshop was conducted in Washington, DC. Over 120 participants from nine countries attended. Programs focused on lobbying strategies, new card technology, loan underwriting and collection practices. Delegates from Colombia traveled to Maryland and participated in the Maryland & DC Credit Union Association’s annual general meeting. Colombia is interested in establishing its own federation, FECOLFIN, and learned how to execute educational sessions. Representatives from the Maryland & DC Association paid a reciprocal visit and traveled to Colombia where they assisted FECOLFIN in lobbying the Colombian senate. INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS Bahamas / Massachusetts Credit Union League Belize / Catalyst Corporate Federal Credit Union In January, 12 credit union staff from the United States participated in a two-week internship with SICREDI in Brazil. Attendees witnessed firsthand how SICREDI credit unions are integral community partners and learned about the association’s operations. Similarly, a group of 12 young credit union professionals representing SICREDI traveled to San Antonio, Texas, to participate in the Cornerstone Leagues’ Annual Leadership Conference and their own two-internship at local credit unions. Brazil / Cornerstone Credit Union League Nine executives, board members and key representatives from the Costa Rican federation, FEDEAC, traveled to Florida and studied the League of Southeastern Credit Union’s effective lobbying and advocacy strategies. Ghana / Jefferson Financial Credit Union Led by Virginian Credit Union League President, Rick Pillow, a group of Virginian credit union leaders traveled to Estonia and helped launch a software platform for clearing transactions – the signature project between the Estonian Union of Credit Cooperatives, World Council and Virginia credit unions. The Minnesota Credit Union Network (MnCUN) sent representatives to Paraguay in recognition of Central de Cooperatives del Area Nacional Ltda (CENCOPAN) 20th anniversary. Mark Cummins, MnCUN CEO & President, addressed attendees and discussed the importance of maintaining current payment system technology. Colombia / Maryland & DC Credit Union Association Costa Rica / League of Southeastern Credit Unions Dominican Republic / Wisconsin Credit Union League Ecuador OSCUS / BCU Estonia / Virginia Credit Union League Guatemala / California & Nevada Credit Union League Jamaica / Cornerstone Credit Union League Mexico Federación Alianza / Mountain West Credit Union Association New Zealand / Central 1 of Canada Peru / Vermont Credit Union League Poland / Georgia Credit Union Affiliates Puerto Rico / Credit Union Association of New York Romania / Ohio Credit Union League Russia / Louisiana Credit Union League, including Altai CU Association / Barksdale FCU Trinidad & Tobago / Connecticut Credit Union League 3 SISTER SOCIETIES Sister Societies are local chapters of the Global Women’s Leadership Network that are established around the world to further the Network’s global mission by making a local impact. The purpose is to convene credit union women, discuss credit union issues, exchange ideas, network with neighboring credit union leaders, and share lessons learned with Network members worldwide. In 2014, the Network established two new Sister Societies in Los Angeles and Colorado. Currently, there are 16 chapters worldwide and in six countries. • Arizona since May 2013 • Bay Area (San Francisco) since April 2012 • Colorado since 2014 • D.C. Metro Area since August 2013 • Fiji since 2012 • Florida since October 2013 • Jamaica since November 2012 • Los Angeles since 2014 • Malawi since 2012 • Michigan since April 2012 • Nevada since August 2012 • New York / New Jersey since May 2012 • Ontario since November 2013 • Servus Credit Union (Alberta, Canada) since 2012 • Trinidad and Tobago since October 2013 4 Global Women’s Leadership Network In 2014, 223 women joined the Global Women’s Network. Since the Network began in 2009, 724 women from 53 countries have been supported by this initiative. More than 130 women from 19 countries convened in Australia during the World Credit Union Conference where they learned new communication skills including presentation techniques and body language behaviors. For the first time in Network history, Global Women scholarship winners were asked to design a concept proposal that would increase access to credit, loans, savings, and leadership opportunities for women in their communities. In addition to receiving funds, grant recipients receive technical support, expertise and guidance from their Global Women Network peers worldwide. Scholarship winners Elenita San Roque, CEO of the Association of Asian Confederation of Credit Unions (Thailand); and Kristi Lozano, Financial Education Specialist at San Mateo Credit Union (USA), were selected as Empowerment Grant recipients and will implement their projects during 2014 – 2015. San Roque will work with Paglaum Multi-Purpose Cooperative in the Philippines to establish a business development center that will help advance women members’ entrepreneurial and leadership skills, as well as access to markets and information for micro and small enterprise developments. Lozano’s project aims to increase the financial and leadership skills of female high school credit union members, and assist in their preparation to enroll in a college or university. Credit Union Development Activities In Ecuador, World Council brought digital financial services to remote areas of the South American country. In 2014, 70,000+ credit union members received debit cards for the first time allowing them convenient access to their accounts in hundreds of service points. Furthermore, over 80,000 international remittances were sent to Ecuador credit unions via World Council’s remittance platform. 84% of the beneficiaries of these remittances are female. In Mexico, World Council piloted a mobile banking initiative that allows participating credit union members to transfer money from their credit union accounts to any person in Mexico that has a bank account. This ability to easily transfer funds is opening the door to convenience and cost savings to over 3,500 users. Users are also able to check balances, pay loans and bills directly from their mobile phone. With the U.S. Agency for International Development and FHI 360, World Council increased availability of financial products and services among rural and agriculture areas in Haiti. Through the project, 32 financial institutions are newly engaged in value chain finance providing $28.5 million in agricultural loans to more than 56,473 microenterprises. In total, the financial institutions increased outreach by 238% to 1,357,226; including 531,417 clients served in rural areas. Following Typhoon Haiyan that struck the Philippines in November 2013, World Council partnered with the Credit Union Foundation of Australia and the Irish League of Credit Unions Foundation, securing over $260,000, to rebuild nine credit unions and two cooperatives affiliated with Visayas Cooperative Development Centre (VICTO). These financial cooperatives, located in the provinces of Leyte and Tacloban City, used project funds to repair critically damaged building structures, equipment and furniture; and recover savings and credit functions to members. In the Philippines, the ownership of a building signifies financial security; therefore, cooperatives reopening quickly and immediately working on repairs contributed to greater trust and confidence—not just by the 280,000 members affected—but also the wider community. With construction now complete, remaining funds were transitioned into a disaster recovery fund that will allow VICTO to benefit member livelihoods. To help credit unions tackle the global challenge of increasing young adult membership and to master the technology needed to serve them, World Council of Credit Unions launched the third phase of its Build the Brand initiative, which includes a new program, weCU2, with fresh digital strategies that will help credit unions better understand and engage with millennials—and vice versa. weCU2 (pronounced “we see you too”) is generously funded by Vancity Credit Union (Canada) and includes a series of online podcasts with industry expert interviews, videos, product case studies, Twitter chats, SlideShare presentations, an interactive blog and direct millennial feedback from around the world. An inperson event will take place in July at the 2015 World Credit Union Conference. With funding from MetLife Foundation, World Council will execute a young adult financial inclusion pilot through August 2015 to better understand the financial service needs of Mexico’s unbanked population ages 18–35. 5 SILVER INDIVIDUALS $5,000 - $9,999 Valerie Brown - William Mapother Memorial Bowling Green, KY, USA Susan & Joe Finnagan - Burlington, VT, USA Thank you, Supporters!
