Whenever there is a question that needs answering, or a guide in the right direction, the program coordinators and student assistants provide advice, friendship, and help in finding solutions. New international students should make their first stop the I nternational Office, located in the Law Faculty building on the main campus, in order to confirm immigration status, student registration status, and receive information on housing, restaurants, campus maps or advice on getting around the city, as well as any and all general information. International Office Yeditepe University International Office Yeditepe University International Office 1 : 5. 2 Introduction Orientation The International Office organizes an orientation program for the beginning of each academic semester in order to present a general overview of the university to new students. Here is when you learn about all the services available on campus and you can pick up some information about how to get around Istanbul which is very helpful for those first few days. You will receive general info on purchasing books and other items, student clubs and details about the campus facilities. This is also a perfect time to meet the other exchange students and get acquainted with our full-degree program international students. Cultural activities and group excursions are discussed and later organized by the International Office. The Yeditepe Global Culture Club members and current leaders are introduced to new students and assist in the orientation process. It provides a way of measuring and comparing learning achievements, and transferring them from one institution to another. • The European community promotes inter-university cooperation as a way of improving the quality of education. International Office Yeditepe University International Office Yeditepe University ECTS 7 : 2 Exchange Programs ECTS - European Credit Transfer System • Making student mobility more accessible is a major element in the student exchange programs. The LLP (Erasmus) program demonstrates that studying abroad is not only the best way to learn about other languages, cultures, countries and ideas, but also a valuable experience and important in academic and career development. • The recognition of studies and diplomas is a prerequisite for the creation of an Open European area of education and training where students and teachers can move without obstacles. • The ECTS does not regulate the content, structure or equivalence of study programs. These issues are determined by the higher education institutions when establishing a satisfactory basis for cooperation, through bilateral and multilateral agreements. • ECTS provides the framework and tools for transparency and mutual academic recognition. International Office Yeditepe University International Office Yeditepe University ECTS 7 : 2..1 Exchange Programs Typical components of ECTS • Information guidebook which provides students and academic staff with useful information on institutions, faculties / departments, organization and structure of studies and course units, and sometimes info on the host country • Learning agreement that provides the study plan which students will follow and the ECTS credits awarded when courses are completed. • ECTS Transcript of Records which is a record of learning achievements during the period abroad, in a complete and clearly understandable form. International Office Yeditepe University Globalization in Education International Office Yeditepe University ECTS 7 : 2.. 2 Exchange Programs ECTS Credits • A unit that measures the quantity of workload required by each course unit, in relation to the total quantity of work necessary to complete a full year of academic study at the institution. • The student’s “work” includes lectures, practical work, seminars, tutorials, fieldwork, private study –in the library or at home – and examinations or other assessment activities. • Based on a full student workload and not limited to contact hours only. 60 credits = workload of one academic year of study 30 credits = one semester generally International Office Yeditepe University International Office Yeditepe University ECTS • 7 : 2..3 Exchange Programs ECTS - Grades – A unit that measures the quality of the student’s work. – The scale includes 5 grades which can be used by any university, together with or instead of its national grading scale. – Highest is “A” Lowest is “E” – The scale is created on a statistical basis so each university awards: • • • • • • • A B C D E F to the best 10% of the results to the following 25% to the following 30% to the following 25% to the following 10% failed Please ask your department advisor for the conversion tables between Yeditepe University and ECTS ---- International Office Yeditepe University VISAS 8 : 1. 1 Study Abroad Visas • All international students are responsible for having the appropriate visas necessary for their duration of study in Turkey. • Visas vary according to the country of origin as well as the program of study and the duration of program. • Student visas are issued prior to arrival in Turkey. • On presentation of the Letter of Acceptance issued by YU stating the program of study, a ‘Student Visa’ may be obtained from the Turkish Embassy or Consulate in the applicant’s home country.
