I am now coming close to the end of my term as the Boston chapter President. Looking back over the year, the
chapter has succeeded as a hub in the New England area
for learning HVAC technologies. This was accomplished
through successful monthly presentations that were well
attended.
Our meeting last month was our annual joint meeting with
AEE, held at the Doubletree Hotel in Waltham. The meeting was hosted this year by the AEE and was their Emerging Technologies Night. There were approximately 150 attendees from both AEE and ASHRAE.

ASHRAE Standards Update Report
ANSI/ASHRAE/ACCA Standard 180, "Standard Practice and
Inspection of Commercial Building HVAC systems” This Standard has been published and is available to purchase from the
ASHRAE Bookstore online at www.ashrae.org. This is a Code
Intended Document, (COD) and is currently being looked at for
adoption by the Sate of California, The General Services Administration, (GSA) and The General Accounting Offices, (GAO). It
is co-written by the Air Conditioning Contractors of America,

We received a report from our MIT Student Chapter that
four students attended the Chicago winter meeting. With
the funds provided by our chapter, they secured airfare and
accommodations. It was the first national meeting for
each of them and they were very pleased with the experience. Two of the four are involved in preparing ASHRAE
papers and it was good for them to hear a number of presentations and meet experts at technical committee meetings and the tradeshow.
We would like our Boston Chapter to donate $19,280 for
ASHRAE Research this year to match our goal. This goal
has been set for us based on our membership of 914 dues
paying members. If each member would contribute
$21.09, then we have satisfied our obligation!
Our Chapter is only at 20% of our goal!
If you are a donor that gave last year but not this year,
or some years but not this year; you are encouraged to
donate again!
Our students very much appreciate the financial support
that our Boston Chapter provides.
Make a donation for yourself or from your company.
Make a donation to honor someone in your life or in memory of someone who was in your life.
We want to thank all of our Students that attend our meetings. It’s a great opportunity for you to get to know our
industry, to learn about industry issues and to network.
It’s also a great opportunity for us to meet you and share
our knowledge and passion for the industry. If you were
to ask any one of us why we got started in the business,
you would receive a diverse range of answers. I suspect
that many of us enjoy the thought that we can point to a
building and say to our children or peers, I helped design
and build that. Some would say with pride, our designs
help our buildings be more energy efficient. We have a
direct responsibility and role in minimizing the energy and
global warming crisis.

thinking back when we were younger, said we want to
grow up to be an HVAC engineer? Probably not many,
but someone or something pulled us into the industry and
inspired us to stay here. Who else is going to do that for
the next generation but you, and ASHRAE.

Stimulus Funding for Schools Provides Energy
Efficiency Opportunities

In the March Historian Column, I briefly mentioned a donation made by Mr. Tony Digiacomo of his collection of
refrigeration and ASHRAE memorabilia. Mr. Digiacomo’s
collection was transferred to the Boston Chapter on April
17th. It consisted of three boxes of textbooks, design and
engineering guides, slide-chart type sizing guides (some of
the older Chapter members should remember these), numerous load estimating and psychrometric charts and tables, and technical data from Trane, Carrier, York and
Westinghouse for servicing and installing commercial and
residential refrigeration systems.
ATLANTA – As school boards and superintendents develop
programs to utilize recent U.S. economic recovery stimulus
funds, projects focused on improving energy efficiency can result in long-term savings for school districts.
Guidance from The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating,
and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) can help schools
earn an A+ in achieving that efficiency.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) signed
by President Obama on February 17, 2009, provides significant
funding and financing opportunities to modernize, renovate and
repair public schools. Under the “State Fiscal Stabilization Fund”
up to $48.3 billion can be allocated to schools. An additional $25
billion in eligible bonds also have been authorized.
Some of the most historically relevant items include a 1946
ASHVE Guidebook, several ASRE Data Books (19461957), a 1953 Trane Air Conditioning Manual, a 1916 edition of “Mechanical Equipment of Buildings - Volume I
Heating and Ventilation”, and the companion 1917 edition
of “Mechanical Equipment of Buildings - Volume II Power
Plants and Refrigeration”. Of significance to the Chapter
are Member Rosters covering the years from 1965 to 1985,
which include information on Chapter Officers and Committee Chairs, and monthly meeting locations and dates.
Also of significance to the Chapter are copies of NorthEastAire, with dates ranging from November 1971 to February 1982.
ASHRAE and other leading building industry organizations have
developed the Advanced Energy Design Guide for K-12 School
Buildings. The guide provides recommendations for achieving
30 percent energy savings over the minimum code requirements
of ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-1999. Estimates show
that a full 16 percent of schools districts’ controllable costs is
spent on energy.
“Beyond energy savings, by implementing the recommendations,
schools may benefit from an improved learning environment,
reduced operating costs, reduced environmental and climate impacts, and enhanced teaching opportunities on the environment,”
ASHRAE President Bill Harrison said.
Over the next several months, all of the items donated by
Mr. Digiacomo will be identified, cataloged and added to
our Chapter historical library at BR+A. Any duplicate
technical publications, handbooks, sizing guides, etc. will
be offered to our Student Chapters for inclusion in their
libraries to further their knowledge of HVAC and refrigeration systems and equipment.
The recommendations in the guide allow those involved in designing or constructing school buildings to easily achieve advanced levels of energy savings without having to resort to detailed calculations or analysis. All of the energy-saving recommendations for each of the eight U.S. climate zones are summarized in a single table. Additional recommendations point to
other opportunities to incorporate greater savings into the design
of the building.
On behalf of the Boston Chapter of ASHRAE, I would like
to thank Mr. Digiacomo for his generous donation of historically significant materials.
More than 14,000 free copies of the Advanced Energy Design
Guide for K-12 School Buildings were sent to school systems in
the United States last spring.

The year is almost over and the final meeting, the installation of officers meeting in May, will be held at Pier 4 on
the waterfront in Boston once again this year. If you would

The Chapter’s website is updated monthly to help keep
chapter members up to date on chapter news and events. If
your company would like to place an ad on the website, it

This month we continued to post past meeting presentations for our members to review, and our Chapter is continuing our efforts to reduce waste by
eliminating printed handouts at our meetings. The
latest posting is the March meeting presentation by
ASHRAE President-Elect Gordon Holness, PE,
Consulting Engineer, and ASHRAE Fellow.

Halifax
Tee Time:
1:00 PM
We will have a shot gun start. Two foursomes (total of 8) will drive their carts out to their pre-assigned tee (on
Par 3 tees, only one foursome will tee off). Eighteen foursomes will tee off at the same time, 1:00 PM sharp. It is
important that you be there ahead of time. The format this year has been changed to a Bramble Format. A
Bramble starts off like a Scramble where each team member tees off and the best drive is selected. How
ever, in a Bramble, after the best drive is selected, all team members from that point on will play their own
ball, stroke-play style, until each team member has holed out. Each team member must use (2) of the drives
during course play.
Poquoy Brook:
Because we sell out every year, any overflow will play at Poquoy Brook in Lakeville. This will be either shot gun
or tee times, depending on how many foursomes are registered by May 6th. If tee times, they would be 9:30 AM
to 12:45 PM.
We need to know the foursomes as soon as possible and recommend that you call immediately for reservations,
even if you do not have all the names of those in your group. Contact Bill Garvey (Phone: 617-210-1711 or
Fax: 617-210-1800). IMPORTANT: Need the sizes of those in your foursome.
Dinner Only:
A separate meal ticket may be purchased for those who do not play golf. Cost is $35.00.
Note:
All courses require that we follow course rules: Proper dress code—No jeans, tank tops, bathing suits. No metal
spikes. You are responsible for the golf carts you drive.
Lunch:
Dutch treat from regular luncheon menu. ARRIVE EARLY.
Happy Hour:
6:30 PM to 7:00 PM—Dutch treat in Club House.
Dinner:
7:00 PM - Complete roast beef dinner, beverage and dessert.
