Community Report “Being good is commendable, but only when it is combined with doing good is it useful.” ~Author Unknown S e v e n S p r i n g s M o u n ta i n R e s o rt C o mm u n i t y G i v i n g M i ss i o n S tat e m e n t Seven Springs is proud to be an economically vital and compassionate part of our community. We support our local charities that work to improve the quality of life for our neighbors and our communities. A Message from CEO Eric Mauck Dear Friends of Seven Springs Mountain Resort, We are proud of our community and our employees. Making a positive impact has always and will always be our priority. Over the past three years, Seven Springs has supported and developed relationships throughout the local community, including Somerset, Fayette, and Westmoreland counties, as well as the Pittsburgh region. Seven Springs Mountain Resort supports many non-profit and civic organizations through considerable charitable and community efforts, specifically charitable giving, merchandise and ticket donations, and volunteer efforts. As you will find within the pages of this report, Seven Springs directly participates in and supports a number of important initiatives. For instance, since 2006, the resort has contributed to 1,104 community organizations ranging from Somerset and Fayette counties Habitat for Humanity to the Samuel Hicks Memorial Foundation. I would like to thank each Seven Springs employee, community leader, friend and customer for their efforts to help make these programs possible. The entire Seven Springs team takes tremendous pride in representing our community. Sincerely, Eric Mauck, CEO Seven Springs Mountain Resort Table of Contents Giving Back In the Community Fundraising Opportunities Words of Thanks Recipients Contact Us 4 11 14 18 20 23 Seven Springs Mountain Resort Giving Back The National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) has honored Seven Springs Mountain Resort as one of 12 resorts for excellence in educating employees and guests about skiing and snowboarding responsibly. Seven Springs’ Know Snow program was selected as the Best Community Outreach Program. The Know Snow Program is a fun, high-energy presentation geared toward middle school and high school groups encouraging kids to get off the couch and be active. The program provides a variety of tips on how to keep safe and warm while enjoying the many cold-weather activities, from the importance of dressing properly to the benefits of helmet use and taking skiing/boarding lessons. The program was also designed to generate enthusiasm among new and returning participants by highlighting all activities like skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing. The interactive program is presented by representatives of the Seven Springs terrain park crew, ski patrol and safety rangers and includes high-energy videos, demonstrations and a question and answer session complete with prizes like stickers, lanyards, carabineers, ski/board tickets and snow tubing tickets. This free program is available to school groups, scout troops, and other non-profit groups interested in skiing, snowboarding or snow tubing at Seven Springs. “This program has been a truly rewarding experience for all the team members involved,” said Lauri Jones, Director of Resort Public Safety. “It’s great to visit a school and receive such great feedback from the students. By the end of the presentation, the kids are energized and excited for their trip to Seven Springs. We’re committed to promoting slope safety and growing the next generation of skiers and snowboarders.” Last year, our Know Snow crew visited 23 schools and spread their message to 2,500 children. The Seven Springs Know Snow crew is available in the fall and winter for school and on-site presentations. For more information or to schedule the Know Snow Program, please contact Carrie Dix at (800) 452-2223, ext. 7586. 4 Seven Springs Community Giving Initiatives Seven Springs Volunteer Fire Department and EMS Organized in the mid 1960’s, Seven Springs VFD is headed up by Chief Rich Jones and Assistant Chief John Mates. There are currently 22 members on the roster. Membership is generally made up of employees of Seven Springs Mountain Resort or borough residents; however, the membership has been expanded to include Seven Springs homeowners. Members are currently dispatched either through the Seven Springs switchboard or through the Somerset County 911 center, both using a paging system. Seven Springs VFD response area lies within the Borough of Seven Springs. Seven Springs also relies upon mutual aid agreements with surrounding fire companies and EMS providers for assistance within the borough including New Centerville & Rural Volunteer Fire Department, Saltlick Township Volunteer Fire Department, Bakersville Volunteer Fire Department, Chestnut Ridge Volunteer Fire Department, Rockwood Volunteer Fire Department and Mutual Aid Ambulance Service. Seven Springs VFD, in turn, provides assistance to those surrounding companies when necessary. The company has two pieces of fire apparatus: a 2001 International Pumper Truck and a 2002 Ford F150 Rescue Truck. The vehicles are housed at the fire station located at the resort below Festival Hall, adjacent to the Blitzen parking lot. Monthly membership meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month. Members respond to a variety of calls including medical, fire and vehicle accidents. Call volume fluctuates with the majority of calls received during the winter ski season. On an annual basis, calls average approximately 20 each month. In additional to these calls, the membership also provides EMS coverage to a variety of special events at the resort. Seven Springs Community Giving Initiatives 5 The Humane Society of Somerset County “Love a Stray Thursdays” Every March, Seven Springs Mountain Resort offers “Love a Stray Thursdays” to our ski and board guests. Skiers receive half off a lift ticket with the donation of a five pound bag of dry dog or cat food. In the last five years, Seven Springs has raised and donated over 700 pounds of food each year to the Somerset County Humane Society. Community Days A local event that began in 2002, Seven Springs Mountain Resort hosts Community Day for local residents. Area residents from Saltlick, Middlecreek, Jefferson and Donegal Townships are invited to the resort to enjoy a day of family fun. These events take place twice a year - in the early spring for skiing, and in the fall during Autumnfest. Approximately 300 residents attend each year, and are treated to a free lift ticket, face painting, a hot dog and soda, and are offered discounts on rentals, Snowsports School and tubing. Our mascot, “Seven”, is always onhand to entertain and pose for pictures. 6 Seven Springs Community Giving Initiatives Toys for Tots Seven Springs Mountain Resort partners with the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program to help make holiday dreams come true for children in western Pennsylvania. The resort offers discounts on lift tickets with the donation of a new unwrapped toy for the Toys for Tots campaign. Each year, Seven Springs participates in the nationwide toy drive. Over the past two years, we collected over 560 donations. Some of the items included learning toys, board games, arts and crafts, CD players and small electronic games, along with sports equipment. Toys for Tots expects to assist thousands of families in celebrating the holiday season with gifts for their children. The annual toy drive is meant to send a message of hope to youngsters to motivate them to mature into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders. Lost and Found Donations Unclaimed lost and found items are donated to many local organizations. Prescription eye glasses are donated to the Lion’s Club, cell phones are donated to both the Phones for Soldiers program (phones are reconditioned for people in the armed services) and to a local women’s shelter that does the same for women in need. All of the usable clothing, shoes, costume jewelry, etc. is donated to Goodwill. All of the found skis and snowboards are donated to the Mon Valley Ski Club for their annual equipment swap/fundraiser. As an ongoing program, Guest Information continues to inventory all of the found items, send back the claimed items and store the remaining items for a period of time. All of the unclaimed items are then sorted and donated prior to each ski season. Seven Springs Mountain Resort is proud to support the efforts of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. Each month, Conserve magazine is placed in every hotel room to help spread the message of the Conservancy. We have also developed an interpretive walking trail so that our guests can enjoy the beauty of our mountains. By showcasing the natural splendor of the Laurel Highlands and encouraging conservation of our natural resources, future generations will enjoy the region for years to come. New Centerville & Rural Volunteer Fire Company The New Centerville & Rural Volunteer Fire Company is located in New Centerville, a small rural town nestled in the beautiful Laurel Higlands of Somerset County, surrounded by stunning wooded scenery and dairy farms. The fire company has been protecting and serving the community since 1949. They have approximately 80 active members, and cover approximately 110 square miles of rural Somerset County. The department is strictly volunteer. In addition to firefighting and vehicle accidents, they also specialize in rescue, farm rescue, confined spaces as well as EMS. Most of the members are trained in hazardous material operations, and they also have two members on the Somerset County HazMat Team. In 2004 alone, the department spent a total of 920 man hours in specialized training to better serve the community. For the past 23 years, the fire company has held the New Centerville Golf Scramble at Seven Springs Mountain Resort. Between 130-140 golfers participate each year, and this annual fundraiser helps raise funds to support the department. In 2010, Seven Springs donated over $9,800 in greens and cart fees to support their cause. Seven Springs Community Giving Initiatives 7 Scholarship Programs THE PHILLIP K. DUPRE FAMILY / G. OGDEN NUTTING FAMILY SCHOLARSHIPS Established in April 2007, the Phillip K. Dupre Family / G. Ogden Nutting Family Scholarships provide continuing educational opportunities for family members of the dedicated long-time employees who have helped build Seven Springs into the world-class four-season facility that it is today. Employees of Seven Springs Mountain Resort are eligible to nominate/sponsor children and other close relatives for a scholarship. Scholarships are awarded yearly in August for the fall school semester. Awarded monies are paid to the college or other post-high school study chosen by the recipient. Each scholarship is awarded for a single school year, but a student may reapply for up to four consecutive years. Criteria for judging the recipients includes character of the student, their commitment to education and the length of employment at Seven Springs of the employee sponsor. A total of $20,000 is awarded each year, $250 to $2,000 per scholarship. THE AUSTIN LYONS AWARD The Austin Lyons Award is given to a senior who demonstrates good character, craftsmanship and scholastic performance. This award is in honor of its namesake who was the resort’s first craftsman. The school selects the recipient based on their knowledge of the students. 8 Seven Springs Community Giving Initiatives Educator in the Workplace Each year, the Somerset County Chamber of Commerce offers the Educator Tour of area workplaces. The tours allow educators an up close and personal look at the types of jobs available in Somerset County and the skill levels required for many of those jobs. By showcasing the skills and education requirements for many of the local jobs, it allows the educators to look at their classes and curriculum and how it could be altered to meet the level of skills needed in today’s workplace. It also helps them guide students into the classes that will benefit them best for their chosen careers. The four tours highlight manufacturing, energy, healthcare, hospitality/tourism, tool and die, distribution, publishing, corrections and engineering. Seven Springs Mountain Resort is a proud partner of the program. In addition to site tours, the Seven Springs management team participates in off-site speaking engagements for the program. Leadership Somerset County The Somerset County Chamber of Commerce proudly presents its Leadership Somerset County program. Leadership Somerset County is a civically-minded program designed to promote awareness and generate interest in serving the community as leaders. The leaders of tomorrow need opportunities to both enhance and encourage their participation in making Somerset County a better place to live. Since 2009, Seven Springs Mountain Resort has sponsored three members of the management team for the program. During their semesters, each student experiences numerous facets of the county and networks with other leaders. Seven Springs believes in investing in able, resourceful and vigorous individuals who will ensure the success of the community. Seven Springs Community Giving Initiatives 9 Habitat for Humanity Shelter from rain, wind and sun is a basic human need. Habitat for Humanity provides decent, affordable houses to families in need. Habitat homeowners gain self-respect as they work alongside volunteers to construct their homes. Since 1976, their ministry has built over 350,000 houses worldwide for more than 1.75 million people. Seven Springs Mountain Resort is proud to support the efforts of the Fayette County, Somerset County and Westmoreland County chapters with donations for their fundraisers. Our employees also generously dontate their time to the organization in various ways, including manpower for home builds, administrative and event support. Blood Drive Every minute of every day, someone needs blood. That blood can only come from a volunteer donor, a person like you who makes the choice to donate. There is no substitute for your donation. When you make a blood donation, you join a very select group. Currently only three out of every 100 people in America donate blood. From its beginning, the American Red Cross has formed a community of service; of generous, strong and decent people bound by beliefs beyond themselves. The American Red Cross blood donor embodies this principle. For more than 18 years Seven Springs Mountain Resort has hosted quarterly blood drives at the resort. Our employees, homeowners and guests donate over 100 pints of blood each year. 10 Seven Springs Community Giving Initiatives Seven Springs Mountain Resort In the Community Salvation Army The Salvation Army has emergency assistance programs such as food pantries, shelters, vouchers for clothing and furniture, and other emergency services.
