Summer is the time for a little less work and more
play, so in this issue we are thinking about travel.
Dubai is an endlessly fascinating city getting a lot
of attention these days for its astonishing wealth
and incredible development. Here we look at one
of its stunning hotels, the Burj al-Arab, a place that
redefines notions of luxury.
For a delightful and relaxing experience closer to
home, see our article on B.C. resorts for some getaway ideas. These places are further reminders of
how fortunate we are to live in this beautiful part
of the world. For any length of trip, our gadgets
page presents useful and stylish accessories to
take along.
We also have our usual mix of stories on health,
business, community, and people. We look at
innovative new cleaning products and services, ebusiness, the Special Olympics, and North Shore
resident Charmaine Crooks.
I wish you all the best on your travels, either near
or far!

BC: North Shore
Annual Walkathon
On Saturday, May 5, 2007 at 10 a.m. in Ambleside Park, Special Olympics
BC North Shore’s fund-raising coordinator Molly Evanshen celebrated
her fourth year volunteering for the charitable organization with another
North Shore Annual Walkathon. For over 20 years, the association has
been offering interactive sports programs and competitions to fulfill the
athletic dreams of individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities, who
otherwise may not be given a chance to participate in competitive sports.
As a mother of four and sister to a Special Olympics athlete, Evanshen and
a team of board members, coaches, administrative staff and other hardworking volunteers take the time to provide these sporting opportunities.
They include Aquatics, Bowling, Floor Hockey, Rhythmic Gymnastics,
Soccer, Snowshoeing, Alpine and Cross Country Skiing, Softball, Speed
Skating, Youth Sports, Track and Field, as well as two new additions of
“For anyone wanting to see what puts the
‘Special’ in Special Olympics, I encourage
[them] to volunteer their time to our very
worthwhile organization or come out to
our Walkathon.”

Golf and Basketball. “Volunteering with Special Olympics BC North Shore
has been gratifying on many levels, such as giving back to an organization
that has given my brother the opportunity to develop his athletic ability while
providing amazing travel opportunities and enrich his life with wonderful
friendships he would not have otherwise had,” says Evanshen.
Each year, the committee and the community band together to organize and
run a two, four or six kilometre Walkathon designed to raise funds for the
over 130 Special Olympic BC athlete establishment. This event (the largest
funds provider for the organization) helps build not only sporting confidence
in its athletes, but self-confidence as well -- athletes are supportively
encouraged to raise pledge money by relying on themselves. The raised
money goes toward providing transportation to the Summer and Winter
Games, supplying new equipment and uniforms, covering facility fees and
giving the Special Olympics athletes the environment and resources they
rightfully deserve.
Last year, the Walkathon event raised $16,000. With the sponsorship of
Collingwood Independent School, Keith Nicoll of North Shore Athletics and
Karim Virani of Virani Real Estate this year, hopes are high that raised funds
will exceed those of last year. Nicoll’s North Shore Athletics has consistently
been the ultimate source for footwear, sports medicine and run clinics on
the North Shore. Karim Virani and his firm provided t-shirts, refreshments
and support for the 2007 event.
“I have also richly benefited from the dynamic relationships I have developed
with the athletes, the tireless volunteers and generous sponsors. They are
all a true source of inspiration to me,” concludes Evanshen. “For anyone
wanting to see what puts the ‘Special’ in Special Olympics, I encourage
[them] to volunteer their time to our very worthwhile organization or come
out to our Walkathon.”<<<

With summer just around the bend, there’s no better way to boot around
town (and traffic) than in a limited edition Vespa GT60. This model is based
on the brand’s very first scooter from 1946, keeping the all-metal chassis
virtually untouched. The aesthetics – including the speedometer, saddle seat

design bonus, however, is that the bed doubles as a hydraulic storage unit

othing says summer like meeting friends for dinner on an outdoor patio, and now the Village at Park Royal has a new spot worth checking out. The
edgy and chic Browns SocialHouse is a great place to relax after work, with its exceptional service in a casual yet sophisticated atmosphere. This is the
fourth location of the popular Browns SocialHouse, joining other successful restaurants in North Vancouver, downtown, and Kitsilano. Its menu features
a fantastic variety of West Coast fusion dishes which give a new flair to local flavours.
Kevin Doyle, managing partner of Browns, chose three of his favourite summer wines to share with V List readers. British Columbia’s wine producers
are establishing a reputation for creativity, great whites and crazy labels, all perfect attributes for summer drinks. Doyle picks two B.C.’s, one red and
one white, and can’t resist a shiraz from Australia. The Barrel Monkey is one of his favourite medium-priced wines from Down Under. These weren’t easy
choices, as Browns boasts a bold and extensive wine list.
Pinor Noir 2005
Blasted Church
Blasted Church is one of the most Majestic vineyard sites in the Okanagon Valley. It is high on a hillside that rolls into the Skaha Lake.
Blasted Church has been producing some great wines, the 2005 Pinor Noir is no exception. Doyle chose this delicious white for its silky
flavours and freshening finish. This medium-bodied, garnet-coloured pinot noir has cherry and strawberry tones with layers of vanilla, cedar,
toasted oak and hints of black pepper and cloves. It features soft tannins, concentrated flavour and a long, smooth finish.
Browns favourite pairing dish: Almost Famous Blacken Fish Sandwich with Yam fries
Priced at the SocialHouse: $47/ bottle
Reisling 2005
Wild Goose
One of the most versatile grapes in the world, reisling is known as “the noble grape.” It grows superbly in the Okanogan Valley, where the
south-facing slopes allow perfect ripening of every vintage. Wild Goose has won numerous awards around the world for its quality wines
and this Riesling is no exception. Wild Goose makes this in an off-dry style with loads of apple and citrus flavours and a crisp clean finish.
This reisling is the epitome of summer in British Columbia, and it’s a favourite at Browns.
Browns favourite pairing dish: Wok Squid and the Penange Curry Bowl.
Priced at the SocialHouse: $41/ bottle
Shiraz 2004
Barrel Monkey
Tony Laithwaite, an Englishman bought an old bar in McLaren Vale, Australia, bought winemaking equipment and hired fresh-out-of-college
winemakers to try out their skills. Rather than a starting job as a “Barrel Monkey” moving around hoses and barrels, these winemakers
instead took on the task of making small batches of wine with very ripe grapes from various regional sources. The irreverent label and bold
flavours (blackberry, blueberry, plum, and espresso with a lingering spicy finish) speak for the power of youth and enthusiasm. It is best
described as subtle, generous and nicely finished. Like so with the generous alcohol content: 15.5%!
Browns favourite pairing dish: 10 hour Barbeque Beef Ribs
Priced at the SocialHouse: $55/ bottle
Browns SocialHouse is located at the Village at Park Royal.

BMW Hydrogen 7
BMW Hydrogen 7
O
ne of the biggest points of contention car buyers have with ecofriendly cars is the slightly homely aesthetic of most models available on
the market.
Enter the concept BMW Hydrogen 7, a gasoline and hydrogen-fueled
vehicle developed by the German luxury car conglomerate just in time to
debut at the 2007 Academy Awards red carpet along with the positive
hoopla surrounding Al Gore’s critically acclaimed film “An Inconvenient
Truth.” With one touch of a button, a driver can switch from running the
12-cylinder engine on petrol to running it on hydrogen, a natural resource
of endless supply. The benefits of hydrogen technology – which minimizes
14 | THE V LIST | SUMMER 07 | www.thevlist.com
carbon dioxide emissions can very well be a selling point for other car
companies to follow the BMW “CleanEnergy” strategy and go green with
their own eco-conscious engine designs. The Hydrogen 7, for the most
part, releases almost nothing but vapour when running in hydrogen mode,
making it a milestone in sustainable mobility. Interesting fact: the tank’s
thermal insulation for the liquid hydrogen is so advanced, BMW calculates
a block of ice contained inside would take 13 years to melt.
The chassis itself is based on BMW’s high-end 7 series with all its visual
appeal and sleek curves. It is powered by a 260kW, 12-cylinder engine with
the capacity to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in just under 10 seconds
BMW Hydrogen 7
– 9.5 seconds to be exact. To deter any wannabe Michael Schumachers,
the Hydrogen 7’s top speed caps at 229 km/h. Since the engine can
operate on both gasoline and hydrogen (17.6 lbs in liquid form), the vehicle
has a range of more than 400 miles. Not too shabby for a vehicle based on
sustainable mobility.
Extra effort put into the environmentally sustainable engine does not
mean BMW skimped on special features. The same luxury equipment as
the BMW 760i applies with the Hydrogen 7: climate comfort composite
glazing, automatic air conditioning system, auxiliary heating, electric seat
adjustment with memory function, Park Distance control, rain sensors, Soft
Close Automatic for the doors and headlight assistant. If you really want to
step the luxury up a notch, a full entertainment and communication package
is there for the picking. It just might be handy to have a navigation system
that can point out the nearest hydrogen fueling station.
The BMW Group once said, “Sustainability. It can be done.” There is no
doubt they did it this time, bringing us one more step on the road toward a
cleaner, greener future.<<<

FUSE at the Gallery is reminiscent of similar
events popping up in places like the Getty
Museum in Los Angeles and other big art
museums across the United States. Society
is currently in throes of passion with the
art world – Art Basel in Miami has grown
in popularity a hundred times over and
websites like Wooster Collective attract
thousands of hits a day as young urbanites
with money to burn are investing in pieces
from Cy Twombly, Jeff Koons and Banksy.
It is no coincidence that the Vancouver Art
Gallery picked up on this trend, launching
FUSE to raise art awareness among the
Vancouver’s younger demographic, even
enlisting some of the city’s best indie bands
to rock out in Robson Square last August.

work week, marking the point when most
of us put our careers on hold for two days

the rest of us might opt to have an intimate

Casa Lapostolle red wine. Vancouverites,
take note: The Vancouver Art Gallery has
given the city another option with the July
2005 advent of FUSE, an adult event on the

the Gallery into a hip destination for all

Another popular FUSE program – iDJ – allows aspiring mixologists to spin
15-minute sets off their mp3 players. “With thousands of 25 to 44-year-olds
living and working in downtown Vancouver, we set out to create a smart,
fun ‘cultural-light’ event as alternative entertainment,” says Dana Sullivant,
the Vancouver Art Gallery’s head of marketing and communications. “We
expected three or four hundred people at the first FUSE and more than
1,200 packed the Gallery.”
Follow the bright pink signage placed around the Gallery and into the
southeast corner of the building. Drinks are available for purchase, a perfect
way to relax after a long week. Mix-masters – like DJ Sipreano – work the
decks, turning the normally hush-hush gallery into a pseudo-club, minus
the cheesy patrons. You’ll find all kinds here trawling the first and second
floors of the Gallery on this night, from true art lovers to turntable loyalists
to ladies who lunch to art connoisseurs to live performance followers to
young professionals seeking a new way of saying “TGIF” (“thank goodness
it’s Friday,”).
Before diving into the meet and greet aspect of FUSE out on the patio
to see and be seen, you might want to take a gander at the artwork and
sculptures in the Gallery, all of which are open to interpretation, viewing and
perhaps debating with an attractive, bespectacled stranger. Don’t forget to

festivities to teach a little swing dancing in the lobby, a great excuse to
come in your best 1940s finery and shake a leg on the dance floor.
As far as past events go, the Picasso exhibition and last year’s Brian
Jungen exhibition drew a record number of FUSE-goers. “Kokoro’s dance
performance near the Rodin exhibit galleries at the first FUSE, Theatre
Sports’ improv with a European artist’s contemporary sculptures, Chor
Leoni in the rotunda and Aeriosa swinging from the side of the building
were all hits,” Sullivant enthuses. The Public Programs department
constantly fields calls from those eager to participate in FUSE, but the
Gallery is careful to ensure the right fit. It has been a fulfilling venture for
Sullivant and the Vancouver Art Gallery. “FUSE is bringing a new audience
to the Gallery, combining performance, music and, of course, the chance
to see great art,” says Sullivant. “Thousands of people have ‘discovered’
the Vancouver Art Gallery and hundreds have become Gallery members.
It’s a way to connect 20, 30 and 40-somethings with ‘their’ Gallery.” The
program’s buzz has even reached overseas destinations – a recent London
Times article named FUSE as a “must-do” when visiting Vancouver.
Free to Vancouver Art Gallery members, the rate for entry behind the
velvet ropes of FUSE is a wildly affordable $15. Though standing room
can be minimal because of crowd throngs and queues are lengthy at the
Gallery Café, you can pass time by people-watching in close proximity
in Yaletown, the best activity of the night. Unfortunately, like all favourite
television shows, FUSE went on temporary hiatus in May, only to come
back strong this June with a 12-hour event, making waves till dawn.

Burj al-Arab
Dubai, in the past few years, has become an exotic and sought-after
luxury travel destination for globetrotters and the well-heeled alike.
As the most populated city of the United Arab Emirates, Dubai has
piqued international interest through its sports events, conferences,
position as a global business epicenter and port, luxury market and
forward-thinking real estate developments.
By far, the architectural gem and hotel crown jewel of this increasingly
wealthy city is the avant-garde Burj al-Arab, whose name translates
into “Tower Of The Arabs.” It is touted as “the world’s most luxurious
hotel,” designed by Tom Wright of the firm WS Watkins PLC.
Constructed on a man-made island just under 280 meters from
Jumeirah Beach, the tallest and most lavish hotel in the world pays
architectural homage to the dhow, a traditional Arab sailing vessel
boasting one or more triangular sails.
When construction of the official 5-star-rated Burj al-Arab broke
ground in 1994, the focal point of the building structure turned out to
be two “wings” spread into a V, forming a wide “mast” with its middle
space enclosed in a gigantic atrium made of Teflon-coated fiberglass.
The sail itself is made of over 161,000 square feet of double-layered
Dyneon material, which is divided into twelve panels, installed
vertically and varnished in DuPont Teflon to protect it from extreme
desert conditions. Securing the foundation was a feat in itself: builders
had to drill 230 concrete piles – each 40 meters in length – into the
seabed. Amazingly, the foundation stands its ground not through
bedrock, but through friction of sand and silt embedded between the
length of the piles. To further reinforce the base, engineers generated
a surface layer of large rocks surrounded by a concrete honeycomb
network to prevent erosion.
The interior itself is another design marvel. Daytime sees the white
fabric sails filter through a gentle, milky light – much softer than

if the exterior was fully made of clear glass. As night falls, the fabric is
illuminated by gorgeously coloured fire and water sculptures. Khuan Chew
– of the design firm KCA International and of such projects as the Sultan of
Brunei’s palace, Dubai International Airport and Madinat Jumeirah Resort
– masterminded the hotel interior. At an awe-inspiring 180 meters, the Burj
al-Arab boasts the tallest atrium lobby in the world, a lobby that accounts
for one third of the hotel’s interior space. While the exterior is cutting-edge
modern, the interior is a perfect hybrid of natural and historic east-west
elements. With 22-carat gold leaf and yards of thirty marble variations
covering the space, one cannot help but feel like royalty while walking
through this $2,400+ (Cdn) per night establishment. Arabic touches and
details resonate throughout, from the Islamic star pattern fountain located
in the mezzanine to the classically Arabian atrium at the top. The Ellipse
waterfall eclipses the Bellagio Hotel fountains in Las Vegas a million times
over. Created by Wet Design, the waterfall combines water and fire in a
spectacular display not replicated anywhere else in the world.
Holding 27 double-storey floors with 202 bedroom suites each, the
smallest suite in this hotel measures in at 1,830 square feet – the size of a
small house and larger than your average one-bedroom Yaletown condo.
The largest suite spans an enormous 8,396 square feet – big enough to
make your head spin. For the ultimate in ultimate luxury suites, channel an
Emir and try the Royal Suite – it rings in at $16,000+ (Cdn) a night. White
Tuscan columns, marble-covered spiral staircases detailed with wroughtiron gold leaf railings, floor-to-ceiling windows, and spa-worthy bathrooms
(stocked with over $300 in toiletries) all showcase the east-west interior
design aesthetic. Technocrat types don’t have to hyperventilate about
being away from their digital toys -- each room is equipped with a 42-inch
plasma television, laptop, internet access and a
TV that allows you to monitor who is knocking on
the door. If you happen to be a sultan, sheik, king
or another royal title, make sure to book one of the
suites on the 25th floor, where a private elevator
takes you to an enormous suite equipped with a
private cinema, rotating bed and private mosque.
Mosaic tiles, Classicism touches and Art Nouveau
influences add up to a visually arresting hotel.
It’s no wonder why political and business heavyweights Sir Richard Branson, Bill Clinton, Nelson
Mandela, Donald Trump and eco-man of the hour
Al Gore have kicked up their feet here. Even badgirl supermodel of the world Naomi Campbell
hosted a lavish $1.8-million dollar bash for her
36th birthday at the hotel.
Service here is the world’s finest, so don’t be surprised if the staff already
knows your name upon arrival -- even the beach staff is armed with waterbottle sprayers. Roll up in one of the hotel’s two chauffeur-driven RollsRoyce Phantoms and check in at the grand lobby after you receive your
reservation confirmation via text message (which you must show security
guards for entry.) Should you need assistance on the dime, a reception
desk is located on every floor and a butler is available for every room
to cater to your whims, whether it be to book an appointment at the
opulent Assawan Spa & Health Club in the hotel or to make reservations
at either the Al Muntaha or Al Mahara restaurants. Elevated 200 meters
above the Persian Gulf, the Al Muntaha – Arabic for “Highest” – sits on a
cantilever and is only accessible by a panoramic elevator, which gives an
unobstructed ocean tableau. On the flipside, Al Mahara – Arabic for “The
Oyster’s Shell” – is accessible via simulated submarine voyage. A gigantic
seawater aquarium containing over one million litres of water is made of
acrylic glass to reduce any magnification effects. With such attention to
detail, experience and emotional provocation, it is no wonder why Conde
Nast Traveler voted it one of the top ten restaurants in the world. “Mixology”
– a unique bartending service launched by The Sky View Bar – features a
fully-stocked, mobile bar that glides to each table, armed with two expert
mixologists who will whip up a cocktail based on a series of questions to
assess your drink personality.
In less than three years from its conception, over 70,000 cubic meters of
concrete and 9,000 tons of steel came together to erect the internationally
recognized and the nationally symbolic hotel gem of Burj al-Arab -- the icon
of a new, dynamically urban super-power that is Dubai..<<<
Perhaps the Burj al-Arab’s design coup d’etat
is the suspended helipad, held in place by a
cantilever and the site of many well-publicized
events. Tiger Woods drove golf balls over the
unfenced circumference one year, and Roger
Federer and Andre Agassi indulged in a friendly
tennis rally on a temporary grass court.

LUXURY MARKET
Luxury Market
E
veryone has their own idea of what a “luxury home” is:
a penthouse with an ocean view, a cabin in the woods, a
sprawling estate on the mountain. But certain factors are
always worth their weight in home value, and the most
reliable, of course, is location.
Take a look, for example, at the top three markets in the Lower
Mainland, which perenially prove to be West Vancouver,
the west side of Vancouver and North Vancouver. All have
natural beauty, attractive neighbourhoods, great schools,
and well-maintained homes, and reflect their desirability in
high prices.
A less subjective definition of a “luxury home” would be those
in the top 10% of sale prices within a particular market. By
those terms, in 2006 a luxury home in North Vancouver
costed $1 million, in the west side of Vancouver it was
$2 million, and in West Vancouver it set you back starting

Luxury homes are certainly different than the rest, set apart by location,

those markets. In the entire Lower Mainland prices

Price increases for apartments were a little more

Ms. Adamache, is likely due to the development of

T
here is good news for those who are redecorating this year and plan
to go green by buying eco-friendly products. One of the most important
style choices emerging for 2007 is “eco-chic” a major trend that has been
coming into the marketplace for some time. At Benjamin Moore, this trend
is reflected in both the high quality, low emission paint products now
available, as well as in dynamic new colour palettes for 2007 that take
their cues from the sustainability movement that is an increasing influence
in modern design.

DESIGNER TIPS
Currently, there are a number of excellent alternatives in many home decor
items that produce less harmful emissions, lower VOCs (volatile organic
compounds) and are manufactured in environmentally-friendly ways.
Benjamin Moore is demonstrating its long commitment to the environment
through expansion of its Eco-spec line. These premium products are the
ideal choice for painting or re-painting your home as they are specially
formulated to release fewer chemicals into the air. The company has
also stepped up its hazardous waste removal methods. Benjamin Moore
supports the CPCA, a national paint recovery program that began in
British Columbia. Along with new eco-friendly products and programs,
sustainability and environmental themes are strongly evident in upcoming
decorating trends as well.
take on bringing the outdoors in. Hues will range widely from bright acid
or apple greens (Alligator Green 2143-20) to dark olive (Clarksville Gray
HC-102) and grey-greens (Night Shade 2116-10). The Natural Elements
colour combinations will gain added depth and interest with the addition of
unexpected textures and design elements such as raw wood, handcrafted
objects and hand-woven textiles.
The experts at Benjamin Moore have revealed the top colours for 2007
will be harmonious vegetal hues rooted in the natural world and inspired
by the changing seasons. “Natural Elements” is one of four leading trends
identified in the 2007 Colours for Your Home colour card created by the
Benjamin Moore North American Design Team following a year of research
into international colour trends.
Overall, the 2007 Colours for Your Home colour card identifies four up-tothe-minute styles, inspired from such diverse sources as the international
fashion, textile and automotive industries. Along with Natural Elements, the
other leading looks identified for 2007 include Vintage Romance, Industrial
Age and Cultural Mosaic.
Natural Elements incorporates all the things that people love in nature

colour combinations tend to lean toward softer, more monochromatic
palettes. Greens are going to be popular and will provide a fresh new
The new nature-inspired colours are more organic and muted. Calm,
harmonious environments are easily created with the color combinations
in this softer palette. Mix the hues with white to keep the look fresh and
light. Add a bolder accent wall to turn up the heat. Or inject nature’s neutral
green to balance all the other elements.
Vintage Romance is a retrospective look at glamour and over-the-top
romanticism. This soft, feminine look combines misty subtle colours with
vintage lace, veiled fabrics and aged finishes. Colours are expressed in
smoky, sophisticated grays and skin-tones blushes, including colours like
Rouge 2084-30, and Chelsea Gray HC-168.
The harsh lines of modernism reflected in the Industrial Age palette are
softened by organic influences. High chroma colours like Lemon Grass
CC-638 are subdued by the rich saturated teal of Yorktowne Green HC133. The orange of Maple Syrup CC-420 is taken down to an aged bronze
tone complemented by cool grays.
Indian, Latin and Asian influences inspire Cultural Mosaic, Benjamin

By Jindro (Henry) Vilimek PROJECT COBRA
Building A Dream
Imagine driving a car that feels like a motorcycle. That’s what it’s like to
drive a Cobra, says Jindro Vilimek. It’s better, however, because you’re
seated comfortably.
The first Cobras were designed by American automotive designer and
former race car driver Carroll Shelby, and built in the 1960s by the Ford
Motor Company. They combined a European lightweight chassis and
aluminum frame with a big American V8 engine, and an eye-popping style
that still turns heads. Although the Shelby Cobra 427 is still revered by car
afficionados, (one sold this year in January at the Barrett-Jackson auction
for $5 million) the Cobra brand has never been the same.
Vilimek, who studied automotive design in the Czech Republic before
immigrating to Canada at age 19, has so much respect for the original
car designer that his vanity plate reads “Shelby.” Now working on his own
as a graphic designer and prior to that working 18 years as managing
partner of corporate communications firm Praxis, he built his car over eight
months from a kit. Although it requires technical skill (Vilimek worked as a
mechanic for the first couple of years he lived in Canada.) he insists that
it’s an attainable dream.
“Driving something you built yourself is an unexplainable high,” he says.
“It also gives you the incredible joy that you have a copy of something that
costs millions of dollars.”
His replica, he says, is identical to the original, only better in some ways.
The engine is smaller and closer to the centre of the car, so it’s not as heavy
in the front as its original. This one has better weight distribution, modern
cross drilled brakes and today wide profile tires.
He loved the project so much that he would do it again for somebody
or help out anyone else willing to take it on. The cars can be built to any
specifications, and depending on custom features can cost between
$80,000 and $100,000.
But the experience of owning one, he says, is priceless. While he was
concerned at first about the car being damaged when parked, in fact
its presence inspires awe. “People don’t dare touch it!” he says. “They
respect it.” He is used to opening the hood at gas stations for admirers

BUSINESS
P
eggy Van Dam has a small business with a big idea: she wants to
change the way people raise their dogs. She started the web-based
Ultimate Puppy five years ago, selling a training toolkit that has been
endorsed by dog behaviorists, vets and many breeding associations. Such
an ambitious endeavour would have been impossible in the days before ebusiness, but Van Dam is starting to make some headway in her campaign
to improve the lives of dogs and their owners.
She started the Ultimate Puppy (www.ultimatepuppy.com) in her Toronto
home after 11 difficult years with a Yellow Labrador named Yukon.
Although she and her husband had always wanted a dog, they had no
helpful information when they first brought him home. While he was wellbehaved with them and with other dog-lovers, he could be aggressive with
children and other dogs. When a neighbour came onto their lawn and tried
to pet him, he bit her. They had to make an agonizing decision, and had
him euthanized.
“I didn’t come to this as a trainer,” says Van Dam, “I came to this as a
frustrated dog owner. When I discovered the information I had missed, I
realized that he would have been a different dog if he had better socialization
as a puppy. Why didn’t the vet give this to me, or the breeder, or the three
dog trainers?”
She spent five years researching dog behaviour and training methods with
dog trainer Sydney Bleicher, and together they designed and produced
the Ultimate Puppy toolkit. She describes it as the “Fisher Price” guide
to raising a puppy, with a colour-coding system and lots of photographs
to make it easy to use. The kit includes six booklets, a “pocket pal” handsized guide for out-of-home practice, and a wall chart with a timeline for
socialization and suggested vet care.
Most people think of “training” as teaching a dog to sit or lie down. Those
things, says Van Dam, are obedience training and can be taught at any
time in a dog’s life. The more important elements, however, are helping
them overcome separation anxiety, territorial behaviour, and aggression.
The window of opportunity for training a dog is between eight and sixteen
weeks, after which it is difficult or impossible to correct aggressive or
territorial behaviour. After Van Dam and Bleicher developed the toolkit,
their next task was to reach as many dog owners as they could.
They went to Devlin eBusiness Architects, a long-standing web development
firm with offices in Toronto and Vancouver. The company recently launched
an e-marketing division, to assist small and medium businesses in reaching
a worldwide audience. One of the services they offer is search engine
optimization. It is estimated that more than half of all online purchases
begin with online search. “You can have the best website in the world,”
says Catharine Devlin, president and CEO of the company, “but if no one
knows your URL, it won’t help you at all.”
This means designing a site so that when someone types keywords into
search engines, your site comes up. Another strategy is known as paper-clip
advertising, or e-newsletter campaigns. This means communicating regularly
with your target audience and encouraging them to come to your site.
When done well, e-marketing can be far more effective than traditional
methods, improving the reach, scope and interactivity of a business. Users of
the internet tend to organize themselves into focused groups. Savvy marketers
can quite easily find access to the niche markets they wish to target.
Creative methods of emarketing include blogging, which has been used
very successfully by some businesses to inspire conversation among
similar-minded people. “It’s a viral networking tool where the things that
you’re talking about, whether it’s your dog, blueberries, or politics, reaches
someone else on the web who’s also interested,” says Devlin. “If you have
a particular area of expertise and you’re a good writer, your blog will get
forwarded around and people will be directed to your website.”
For Ultimate Puppy, a helpful resource for people using the toolkit is the
Puppy Bytes, which are sent by email. These are hints on various aspects
of training, including socialization, preventative exercise, games, obedience
and housetraining, meant to encourage people with different ideas through
the crucial eight-week period. “People are time-challenged, so we use the
internet to help keep them on track,” says Van Dam. “We hear all the time
that people love getting the bytes because otherwise they keep working
with their dog on the same things.”
Through viral marketing, customers have contacted her from Australia,
England, Asia and all over the U.S. She was shocked a few years ago
when she received endorsement from Burmese Mountain dog breeding
associations all over the world. What had happened was that one breeder
on Vancouver Island had seen the toolkit, gone on a Burmese Mountain
dog list group, and spread the word. Similar networking has happened
regularly ever since.
Van Dam still wants to reach more veterinarians, who she says would have
a great impact on new dog owners. Ultimately, she wants to prevent the
euthanization of dogs for bad behaviour which is entirely preventable. “It’s
a paradigm shift,” she says. “It’s not that all of a sudden dogs need this,
it’s that now we know that people can impact a dog, and if they don’t be
proactive it costs the dog’s life.”
The shift is starting to happen, she says, as more vets and breeding groups
get the right information. “We’re still struggling with the public,” she says,
“but now we tell ourselves, we’re doing this one dog at a time.” <<<
“You can have the best website in the
world,” says Catharine Devlin, president
and CEO of the company, “but if no one
knows your URL, it won’t help you at all.”

W
hat do bears, strawberry shortcake and Ocean Spray have in
common? They all either love or contain some sort of berry: blueberry,
strawberry, blackberry, goji berry or cranberry. This category of fruit – not
only delicious on the taste palette and the sweetest natural dessert out
there – has recently hit it big time on the anti-oxidant market, with product
companies touting its miraculous disease-preventing and anti-aging
properties. Berries are the new healer.
Cranberries are a runaway hit when it comes to berry anti-oxidants. Every time
you take a swig of Ocean Spray, you are reaping massive cardiovascular and
immune health benefits – cranberry juice is even sometimes recommended
to people with spinal paralysis. Your dentist may even give you kudos for
drinking the tart juice, as it helps diminish the dental plaque-causing bacteria
in the mouth; no one wants an onset of gingivitis.
Ocean Spray, the world’s best-known producer of edible cranberry products,
has researched benefits of the fruit for over 50 years. Proanthocyanidins,
a compound found in cranberries, keeps certain bacteria and harmful
molecular free radicals from sticking to the urinary tract and festering
infection. Though research shows cranberries are more effective as a
preventative measure rather than as a treatment, here’s hoping that when
your mother told you to drink all your cranberry juice, you did.
Blueberries are fantastic in pies and jellies, and also in the top three antioxidants. Much like its cranberry cousin, the blueberry has proven to be
a preventative measure against cancer, specifically when it comes to
stopping isolated cancer cells from multiplying. In the same vein, the berry
effectively lowers cholesterol levels and thus guards against any growing
chances of heart disease. It is also excellent for memory retention, which
just might help you clinch a win in that next game of Trivial Pursuit. POM
Wonderful: an anti-oxidant juice brand that exploded in popularity with their
design-saavy bottled pomegranate juice, just introduced POM Blueberry,
a delicious hybrid of tart pomegranate and sweet blueberry. Not only does
it pack nutritional one-two punch, POM Blueberry is gluten-free and flash
pasteurized to retain flavour and vitamins. Fountain of youth junkies might
also want to take note: A USDA Human Nutrition Research project showed
that blueberries just might help us retain neural alertness and motor skills
-- an indication that baby boomers better eat and drink up.
The blackberry is a favourite among the herbal medicine community. While
the fruit itself is used therapeutically, it is the enzymatically fermented leaves
that prove to be the best part. Containing large amounts of anthocyanocides
found in its pigment, this fruit is not only a powerhouse anti-oxidant,
it also has a positive effect on the eyes – specifically for preventing
cataract progression. Blackberry leaves can rid sore throats brought on
by winter, stop mouth sores caused by stress and halt the development
of carcinogens. A close relative to the blackberry in chemical property is
the raspberry, whose leaves are traditionally used to ease labour pains in
childbirth, for those who prefer to go the natural painkiller route rather than
the chemical. Now if only “Blackberry Thumb” caused by those ubiquitous
handheld PDAs could be cured with this juicy fruit.
Surprisingly, a cup of strawberries offers as much Vitamin C as a cup of
orange juice, which everyone knows is the ultimate pal to immune systems
and connective tissues. For women, strawberries really can be a best
friend, doling out much-needed calcium, magnesium, folic acid, potassium.
Besides, they weigh in at 53 calories per cup, making them as health and
diet-friendly as Weight Watchers.
The goji berry,an exotic relative from Asia, is prized for chemical compounds
that promote well-being. While the Himalayas contain the highest quality goji
berry straight from the vine, Western China, Mongolia and Tibet also grow
their own goji versions. Harvesters take great care to avoid touching the
small, red berry with their bare hands, as this might oxidize the fruit’s flesh
and extinguish polysaccharide molecules that benefit in cell communication.
The goji has been proven to spark a 300% spike in blood cell function
and 200% increase in the production of infection-fighting proteins. High in
iron and other essential vitamins, the goji is just a smidge sweeter than its
cranberry brother.
So the next time you buy sorbet, pick up fruit-infused chocolate or take in
your recommended food groups, be sure not to look over the berry – better
when fresh, but just as good as jam.<<<
“Blueberries are natures super-food,
they pack a nutritional punch. A perfect
addition to any healthy meal.”

British Columbia has to offer – and it’s time the locals fall head over heels
in love with their home again, too.

Q&A with Annabel Hawksworth
A seasoned communications specialist with a wealth of experience in
hospitality, pr and marketing, Annabel Hawksworth founded Hawksworth
Communications in July 2006 after completing a six-year tenure as
Communications Director with BC’s leading Top Table Restaurant Group.
A graduate of London’s Chartered Institute of Marketing, with eleven years
spent working in the UK’s capital city, she now resides in Vancouver and
combines her hospitality background and event-planning expertise with
skilled media relations savvy to represent a range of luxury lifestyle brands
that include: Tiffany & Co, Vancouver; Opus Hotel & Elixir; Adara Hotel,
Whistler; Ian Daburn Salons; and the four Top Table restaurants West,
Blue Water Café, CinCin and Araxi.
V: The V List understands you are a native of England. How did you begin
your career there and what brought you to Vancouver?
AH: I studied marketing and business communications, I first worked in
luxury hotels, but I’d say my career really took off when I had the opportunity
to work for Marco Pierre White, at the time he was considered by many to
be the most influential chef in the country and it was exciting to be a part
of his meteoric growth. From a small restaurant in Wandsworth Common
his empire quickly expanded to over a dozen or so restaurants. During the
six years I worked for him, these restaurants became established as some
of the hottest and most sought after venues in the city, the largest had a
capacity for a thousand and we would host all the big movie premieres
as well as society events, weddings, celebrities, royalty, new product
launches and corporate functions.
During this time I met my future husband, David joined the group as Head
Chef of the Picasso Room at L’Escargot in Soho. He’s the reason for
the move to Vancouver - after 10 years in England working for some of
the country’s leading chefs he was ready to come home to Vancouver,
he missed the West Coast lifestyle. We were in love and so when the
opportunity came for him to open a new restaurant on South Granville
(West) we had to move quickly – in five weeks we got engaged, were
married at The Vineyard, Stockcross (a traditional English wedding) and
then a week later packed up our home and moved to Vancouver.
V: What is it like being married to an incredible chef?
AH: Well, I’m pretty well fed it has to be said! We like to entertain and
David loves to cook – even on his days off. As a guest chef David has been
invited to cook at many prestigious events and I’ve accompanied him to
New York, California, Montreal, Toronto and back to London and had some
amazing dining experiences – we’ve eaten in some of the world’s best
restaurants. On the downside, after six years of marriage I can probably
count on one hand the number of Friday or Saturday nights we’ve had
together – he’s always working!

PEOPLE PROFILE
V: What has been your greatest personal achievement thus far?
AH: Thus far, having the nerve to take the plunge and move half way across
the world to Canada and then to start my own business.
V: If you could see into the future, what would yours look like?
AH: Health and happiness are tantamount - I’m looking forward to the new
family dynamic, but I’d also like to continue to develop my business, I want
to remain a boutique firm offering a personal service, but I’m working with
some talented individuals right now and with the way Vancouver is growing
I see lots of opportunity and potential for us to be working on some exciting
projects in the future.
V: What do you consider to be your most distinct characteristic?
AH: I’m a Libra, some of my friends tease me because I take great pains
to weigh up every situation and can always see both sides of the story. I
think it’s a trait that has its pros and cons – I’m not hot headed and don’t
tend to make rash decisions which is a good thing – but sometimes I can
dwell things for a bit too long.
Hawksworth with Husband David (currently courted by Iron Chef producers)
V: You’re a very busy woman these days. What other occupations do you
have on your full resume?
AH: Aside from running my business David and I are expecting our first
child in June. It’s an exciting time for us but neither of us are really sure
how the change will impact our lives – we’re so used to being independent
and spontaneous – but we’re really looking forward this new chapter in
our lives.
V: What do you most enjoy about living on the West Coast?
AH: We both love to ski and heli-skied at Tyax mountain last year which
was the most phenomenal experience. I love living close to the ocean and
feel very privileged that I can finish work for the day and be on the sea wall
within minutes – the natural setting really takes away the stresses of the
day, I find the ocean very calming. Living in Yaletown I really feel like we
have the best of both worlds, restaurants, boutiques, cafes and stores and
the ocean and beaches right there on your doorstep.
V: Are you involved in any local charities?
AH: For the past few years I have worked with Kim Osbourne on the Chefs
for Life annual fundraiser in support of Friends for Life and the Diamond
Centre for Living. This year’s event, held on May 6 at Tojo’s new restaurant
was hugely successful and raised just over $90,000.
V: Who is your greatest hero?
AH: Maggie Thatcher came in to power when I was at was at primary
school – I remember being nine years old when they announced it and
thinking wow, a woman is running our country I can do anything (also
Cinderella – I have always been a hopeless romantic and am happy to say
I found my prince!)
V: Tell us the one motto you live by each and every day?
Here are two:
–Live in the moment and don’t stress over the little things – there will always
be bigger issues – time spent worrying is time wasted.
–You reap what you sow – you’ll get out of life exactly what you’re prepared
to put in - invest the time and effort and you will reap the rewards.<<<

A
silver medalist at the 1984 Olympics.
Canada’s flag bearer at the 1996 Centennial
Olympic Games. Former elected member of the
International Olympic Committee (IOC). Current
chair of Olympians Canada.
Born in Jamaica and a Canadian immigrant by
the age of six, Charmaine Crooks has been an
Olympian since the tender age of seventeen years
old when she made the 1980 Olympic team. Like
many ambitious and talented athletes, she attended
post-secondary on an athletic scholarship,
graduating from the University of Texas with a
degree in Psychology. Crooks then fully dedicated
herself to an illustrious, well-documented track
and field career spanning nearly two decades.
Crooks’ track record (pun slightly intended) is
impressive, indeed. A gold medalist several times
over at the Pan American, Commonwealth, World
Cup and World Student Games, she was the first
Canadian woman to run the 800-metre distance in
under two minutes. She retired from competition
after her fifth consecutive Olympic Games in
Atlanta 1996, but her time with the organization
was certainly not over – Crooks was elected as
a member of the IOC Athletes Commission and
served as an elected IOC member until 2004.
She continues as a member of the IOC Press
Commission and IOC Athletes Commission, a
representative of the World Olympians Associated
Executive Board and is a founding member of the
independent IOC Ethics Commission, where
she aids in developing the IOC Code of Ethics.
When Toronto bid for the 2008 Olympic Games,
Crooks was there to provide her support, and was
elected to the Executive Board of the Canadian
Olympic Committee, where she currently serves
as a chairperson on the Awards and Recognition
team until 2009.
One of her biggest contributions to the city of
Vancouver is her pivotal role as a board member

for the Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC) for the 2010 Olympic
Games. Winning the bid kick-started Vancouver into action – the cityscape
is changing before our eyes as cranes build and developers work around
the clock to meet 2010 with facilities needed to support the Games, its
athletes and the inevitable influx of visitors for the 16-day event. Crooks lists
off the endless benefits of having the Games in Vancouver: they bring high
international esteem, are “life-altering for many, an infrastructure catalyst
and boost for sports and business development.” She adds, “Standing
on the podium winning a medal was an honour, as well as now being a
part of a committee to bring the Games here and helping others have their
dreams come true.”
Her myriad of experiences has also led the dynamic, highly articulate
Crooks down other athletic paths. NGU (Never Give Up) Consultants
– the firm she founded and continues to head – works within the realms
of sports marketing, promotions and production, providing international
entertainment programming and strategic counseling for various
companies. BC Business magazine named Crooks a “Top 40 Under 40” in
1997, while another publication listed her as a “Top 50 Women of Power”
in 2004. The Bell Canada 2010 Olympic Marketing Team currently has her
on board, as well as AIM/Trimark Mutual Funds. Because Crooks’ reach is
so far and wide, she often hosts and commentates for well-known media
outlets: CBC, TSN, CTV, Fox Sportsnet and European TV. Recently, she
partnered with Pfizer to be a spokesperson for neuropathic pain, an issue
Crooks holds close to heart after having two parents pass away from
cancer, watching close associates undergo constant chemotherapy and
knowing that many suffer pain in silence.
Giving back to the community is something the ever-busy Crooks still finds
time to do, especially when is comes to nurturing the growth of women’s
interests within the community and in sports. “No Laughing Matter,”
a comic-relief show she created and produced, aired on the Comedy
Network with proceeds going toward breast cancer research. Since
2000, she has been an honorary board member of the Lower Mainland Big
Sisters Chapter. Children are a real inspiration for Crooks, who is excited
for “kids to be inspired by the performances of Canadian Olympians, as
well as others from around the world.” Day in and day out, she lives by the
motto “never give up,” a phrase reflected in the name of her consultancy
firm. Higher education has become a new passion and focus of hers,
having just been appointed to the Board of Governors for the University
of Northern British Columbia (UNBC). “My life is evolving,” she says. “I
like to re-invent myself, and I like the notion of education and working with
potential future leaders.”
Crooks’ hard work, altruism and tireless energy was rewarded in March
2006, when she was one of six international nominees to receive the IOC
Women and Sport trophy, a nod to her efforts in maintaining gender equity
in high-performance athletics. Four years ago, she was inducted into the
BC Hall of Fame, immortalizing her legacy as a Canadian athlete.

G
oing green is no longer just for the earthy, hippie set. Being an
environmentally friendly consumer is not only hip, it will soon become the
norm. Corporations have also boarded the eco-bandwagon, intent on
saving the world in much the same way as their clients and consumers,
whether it is through adopting new eco-forward policies, offering green
services or using environmentally sustainable products.
Every day, we clean something with store-bought products: Windex,
Clorox, Javex, Comet, Pine Sol and Mr. Clean. What we never stop to
think about is how harmful these chemicals are to our health, especially
if we are breathing them in at such close proximity. Method – a designdriven, environmentally and socially ethical cleaning product brand – was
founded by a Stanford-educated chemical engineer named Adam Lowry
and creative designer Eric Ryan. Their motto “people against dirty” doesn’t
just mean dirt in the literal sense. It also means toxins found in cleaning
products, pollution, animal-testing and exploitive labour practices by
large corporations. What began as a line of all-purpose cleaners quickly
burgeoned into hand and body soap, laundry detergent, fragrance sprays,
candles and microfiber cleaning cloths. The company makes sure all its
formulas are bio-degradable, its packaging is recyclable, its fragrances
are natural and its testing (and their raw suppliers’ testing) is not done on
animals. Method is all about design aesthetics, too, which is why the brand
enlisted superstar product designer Karim Rashid to create their bottles.
This brand has been a pioneer in making green cleaning practices modern
and hip, as well as literally cleaning up the world one Method at a time.
In the local community, Aspen Clean has answered the cry for more green
services in Vancouver. Founded by Alicia Sokolowski and Chris Solodko,
this non-toxic, eco-friendly cleaning company provides high-caliber cleaning
services and uses products free of pollutants. Aspen operates eight Green
Teams, each made up of three members and a Team Leader on call eight
hours a day, six days a week. The company’s menu of services include
move in/move out cleaning, as well as bi-weekly, weekly and monthly
cleaning.
Aspen Clean’s Green Teams – all uniformed and expertly trained – use
good, old-fashioned elbow grease to rid your abode of grime with the help
of natural tile powder, vacuums with medical grade filtration, bio-degradable
soaps and natural disinfectants. A non-toxic, steam carpet cleaning service
has also recently been added to the roster. Allergy sufferers, pregnant
women, pet lovers and people with small children alike absolutely love
Aspen Clean for its dedication to safe cleaning practices. An interesting
story: a former Green Team member – who had worked in the industry for
nearly 20 years – used an inhaler at least twice daily to treat her asthma.
While working at Aspen Clean, her dependence on the inhaler grew less
and less until she was using it only a few times a month.
Probably the most admirable local corporate foray into environmentally
conscious cleaning practices comes from the Pacific Palisades Hotel,
located right in the hub of downtown. Not only are Green Seal-certified
Enviro-Solutions products used to spic and span rooms, Pacific Palisades
is also a participant in the BC Hydro Power Smart program, meaning they
save 521,000 kw a year as a Power Smart location. Don’t expect the
mini bar to contain junk food – this hotel looks out for your diet, stocking
incorporated organic snacks like Santa Cruz Organic Soda, Kettle Organic
Chips and Dagoba Organic Chocolate in addition to Jack Daniels and
Snickers. Partially used or unused toiletries are donated to United We Can
to help those less fortunate, and the hotel donates $1 from every room
booked (on an Earth Care Rate) to the non-profit Green Kids Incorporated
foundation. All paper products within the hotel are made by Unisource
Canada’s Save-A-Tree brand, and water conservation systems have been
installed in faucets, toilets and showers. If you’ve already gone green and
happen to drive a Prius, the hotel slashes parking fees in half.
Even lingerie empire Victoria’s Secret is taking a greener approach to their
company policies. Every year, nearly 400 million catalogues are mailed to
U.S. citizens across the country,, roughly about 1.3 copies per person.
Victoria’s Secret has decided to put a halt to using pulp for paper from
forest resources, and instead use recycled paper or paper approved
by the Forest Stewardship Council, which regulates sustainable forest
management and wildlife preservation. With the help of ForestEthics – the
organization that helped plant seeds of change with Victoria’s Secret – the
company has also committed to stop buying pulp and paper made from
endangered forests. In fact, all their clearance catalogues are already made
from 80% post-consumer recycled content.
With negative, “uncool” stigmas attached to being earth-friendly slowly
disintegrating, the past few years have been uplifting for individuals and
organizations that have argued day in and day out for Mother Nature’s
causes. Though some may argue that “going green” is a flash fad, like
Segways and leggings, let’s hope that this movement lasts a very, very long
time – for the naysayers’ sake, as well as ours.<<<

clients and consumers...”

>>>SoundArt
Canvas Speakers
A love affair with the art world has reached
dramatic proportions in the past few years
– take note of the overwhelming popularity
of Art Basel in Miami and the increased
amount of gallery openings throughout
North America. There is no better way to
enjoy a painting than to see it while listening
to your favorite tracks. Out of the U.K.
comes SoundArt, a new sound system
using Distributed Mode Loudspeaker
(DML) and hidden flat panel speakers to
project music from within an awe-inspiring
work of art.
>>>Seiko CPC TR-006
Bluetooth is not only for your ears these days, but also for your wrist – the Seiko
Bluetooth prototype watch virtually “talks” with your cellphone. This smart (and smartlooking) timepiece can receive text messages, pick up Caller ID and play with different
ringtones. As long as you had a Bluetooth headset, you can put your phone away and
still be able to access all its major functions. Yes, the watch is rather large but it’s a
good thing big-faced styles are all the rage these days.
>>>Nike + iPod
You simply cannot drive anywhere in our fair city without seeing some local
Vancouverite running like the wind, taking in the great outdoors – rain, snow or
sunshine. Nike and iPod recently teamed up with a system that synchs fitness
and technology: hook up your iPod nano to your Nikes with the Nike + iPod
sports kit and take off like Forrest Gump. A receiver on your iPod nano and a
wire transmitter in your shoe keeps record of how long and fast you go, which
you can then track online – as well as view the stats of other runners around
the world. So do as Sheryl Crow and run, baby, run.

>>>Apple iPhone
It has finally arrived. After years and years of trace whisperings about Steve
Jobs’ fantastical idea, the iPhone is ready to hit the market this June 2007.
The super-thin phone device has a 3.5-inch multi-touch screen, a proximity
sensor that automatically turns it off when it touches the face, Bluetooth
capabilities, WiFi that kicks in once it detects a network, quad-band GSM
radio and 2 megapixel camera. It also doubles up as an iPod replacement
with up to 16 hours of listening time. For anyone who literally wants the world
at their fingertips.
>>>Hannspree LCD TV
People are growing more and more design-savvy these days – everyone wants a
little fashion and function in their lives. There is no reason to settle for a plain-Jane
Toshiba or Sony TV when you can have a Hannspree LCD TV, a European brand
of televisions that gives you four collections to choose from: Sports, Fantasy, Style
and Xv-S. Every detail has been taken into consideration by Hannspree, from
360degree aesthetics to inner electronics that rival the top gadget companies.
Your Hannspree will not only glow with your favourite television show, it’ll also
serve very well as an art piece in the living room or bedroom.
>>>Garmin Nuvi 360
GPS systems in the car sure have revolutionized the way we drive – thanks in
no small part to the electronic (and vaguely British) female voice telling us to
turn left in half a mile. The Garmin Nuvi 360 is a navigator, translator, entertainer
and tour guide all in one. It lets you talk on acompatible phone via Bluetooth
technology, holds preloaded maps of Europe or North America, plays MP3s
and allows JPEG picture viewing. Want to skirt your way around a traffic jam?
Additional software allows your gadget to re-route you immediately.<<<
