Bell County Museum
Bell county museum
For decades, the award-winning Bell County Museum has
been a vital resource for the collection, interpretation and
preservation of the historical heritage of the Bell County
region. The collection covers pre-history, the land grant
period, the formation of the county in 1850, and the
establishment of Fort Hood.
The museum was originally housed in the beautifully
restored Carnegie Library Building, constructed in 1904. A
major expansion in 2006 provided and additional 10,000
square feet of space, which allowed the museum to expand
its mission to include providing quality traveling exhibitions
such as "The Inspired Line: Selected Prints from Albrecht
Durer and Rembrandt van Rijn," hosted in the summer of
2009. The Bell County Museum is now home to a new
interactive exhibit focusing on one of the most prolific and
important archaeological sites in North America, located in
Bell County, Texas, called the Gault Site.
The award-winning museum provides interactive exhibits,
Fun Shops and Summer Camps for children, as well as a
very special children's mascot, Charley Chisholm! Call the
museum to discover how your child can explore
archaeology at the museum!

The Gault Site Exhibit
the Gault site: A Wealth of new
Archeology information
The Gault site has been home to human beings for over
13,000 years. Strategically located streamside in the
Balcones Ecotone (the boundary zone of the Edwards
Plateau and the Black Prairie and Coastal Plain Ecozone),
the Gault Site provided abundant food resources for early
peoples. This rich ecotone enabled early peoples to forage
the uplands as well as the stream valley where different
kinds of plants and animals were found.
Just as important as the wealth of food sources, however,
is the seemingly endless supply of chert at the site, which
was readily crafted into tools and weapons. To date, the
Gault Site excavations have uncovered almost 2 million
artifacts; 600,000 to 700,000 of these are from the Clovis
period (13,300 to 12,900 years ago). The analysis of this
material provides archaeologists with a unique look into
the lifestyles of the earliest people in Texas and, by
extension, the earliest peoples in the Americas.
Bell County Museum is home to a permanent interactive
educational exhibit featuring discoveries of the Gault Site.
Guided walking tours to this site are available through the
Bell County Museum.

structure and are an important campus landmark today.
The University sits on 125 acres in the rolling hills of
Central Texas. Enjoy walking through this peaceful campus
filled with historic buildings, historical markers, native
