They took pride in being punctual, doing a good job, and actually earning their paycheck. I’m not so sure that is as true today as it once was. Personal obligations and responsibilities have always lurked in the background for everyone who works for a living, and sometimes, through no fault of our own, they intrude on our professional lives. Every employer worth his salt understands that fact and is willing to accept it as a part of doing business; but only up to a point. At one time or another, most of us have worked with someone who was right out of a Dilbert comic strip – the employee from hell who has every problem known to man. One crisis seems to follow right on the heels of another and each one requires time away from the workplace. It is hard to know when the distractions and disruptions finally outweigh the value of any work that employee is doing and become a drag on production. Other employees are left to wonder if similar behavior on their part would be equally tolerated. I have heard people say, “If I had done that I would have already been fired.” Having said all that, we seem to have gone beyond allowing personal obligations to interfere with our work and reached a point where we allow personal wants and desires to interfere. “I have to leave early today because I’m going to a baby shower.” “I’m going to be late today because I have to stop at Wal-Mart to finish my Christmas shopping.” “I’m going to stop at the bank when I go to lunch, so I may be a little late getting back.” “I was late this morning because I was up last night watching the Super Bowl.” I have heard people say all of those things – and with a straight face. When hiring a new employee, I have always believed that reliability is as important as technical skill. “But the work still gets done,” someone once told me. That’s true, but it gets done by somebody else. It gets even worse when people are dishonest about their need for time off from work. I once heard about someone who asked for a leave of absence because her mother died. It wasn’t true, but, ironically, a few weeks later her mother really did die and her deceit was exposed. Needless to say, she got a permanent leave of absence. I have finally come to the conclusion that every workplace needs at least one person who doesn’t have a life. Then maybe some work will still get done when the others are out taking care of personal business. David Anderson Editor Condolences On behalf of the Texas Society for Histotechnology, I would like to offer our condolences to Carol Beth Taylor who recently lost her husband Mark. Carol Beth formerly worked as a Histotechnologist in Waco and Temple. At present she is the Pathologists’ Assistant for Providence Health Center, Hillcrest Medical Center, and Central Texas Pathology Laboratory in Waco.
