Researchers Rowe and Kahn found that the key ingredients for a high quality of life are maintaining a low risk for disease, a high level of engagement with the community, and high physical and cognitive function, and “it is the combination of all three that represents the concept of successful aging fully.” 4 www.upstate.edu/oasis www.facebook.com/SyracuseOasis Wildlife Art Arts & Humanities Step by Step Painting: Summer by the Sea 101 Evelyn Fiorenza, MS, Education, Syracuse University, Teaching Artist With winter enveloping us, this is an opportunity to have some warm colors back in our lives! Mondays Mar 9 - Apr 6 1:00 - 3:00 Fee: $32 5 sessions OASIS Studio Winter Spring 2015 Fanny Seward: A Life 112 Trudy Krisher, Author of Fanny Seward: A Life and retired Professor, Department of Liberal Arts, Communication, and Social Sciences, Sinclair Community College, Dayton, Ohio In Fanny Seward: A Life, biographer Trudy Krisher provides a vivid portrait of the young Auburn girl who was eyewitness to one of the most tumultuous periods in American history: the American Civil War. On April 14, 1865, the night of President Lincoln’s assassination, Booth’s conspirator Lewis Powell attempted to assassinate Fanny’s father, Secretary of State William Seward, in his home just blocks from Ford’s Theatre. The attack, which left Seward and his son seriously wounded, is recounted in poignant detail in Fanny Seward’s diary. Fanny, the beloved only daughter of Seward, was a keen observer, and her diary entries from 1858 to 1866 are the foundation of Krisher’s biography. Fanny offers intimate observations on the politicians, generals and artists of the time. She tells of attending dinner parties, visiting troops and going to the theater, often alongside President Abraham Lincoln and his wife, Mary. Through Fanny’s writings, Krisher not only skillfully brings to life the events and activities of a progressive political family but also illuminates the day-to-day drama of the war. Giving readers a previously unseen glimpse into the era, Fanny Seward: A Life broadens our understanding of Civil War America. Fanny Seward: A Life will be available for purchase at the end of class. (315) 464 - 6555 7 Abandoned: The Untold Story of 113 Orphan Asylums Michael Keene, Author of Abandoned: The Untold Story of Orphan Asylums Abandoned presents eye-opening, true-to-life tales of the desperation of a million Irish immigrants seeking to find better conditions in the United States after leaving behind the famine they experienced in their homeland in 1848. Unfortunately, upon settling in the Five Points area of Lower Manhattan, they would find only squalor, gang violence and disease. Within a few years, there were an estimated 30,000 orphaned and homeless children roaming the streets of New York City. To survive, they resorted to petty crime, begging and selling newspapers for a nickel a piece. Most slept in alleyways, cellars and even sewers, ultimately joining the violent street gangs of the Bowery Boys and the Dead Rabbits for protection. As a result of this crisis, the Age of Orphan Asylums began, culminating in one of the most improbable and audacious episodes in American history, known as the Orphan Train Movement. From 1854 to 1929, approximately 250,000 orphaned children would be relocated to the Midwest to live with farming families, many as indentured servants. Today there are only 50-100 original orphan train riders still alive. Michael Keene, the award-winning author of Abandoned, will tell about this troubling time in our history. His book will be available for purchase at the end of class. Note: Class is exempt from the $20 registration processing fee. With vivid detail and deep research, readers will travel through the lineage and architecture of the asylums in New York. While walking in the footsteps of history’s mentally ill, readers will continue to be amazed at patients’ treatment, their stories and the ever-evolving world of mental health in the United States. Mad House specifically looks into the insane asylum wards of 19thcentury New York and the rich assortment of doctors 8 www.upstate.edu/oasis and patients that inhabited them. Fridays Jan 23 - Apr 10 9:30 - 12:30 Fee: $87 12 sessions OASIS Lecture Hall Winter Spring 2015 Jewish Comedy: from Shtetl to Showbiz 126 Neal M. Hoffman, entertainer, singer, synagogue cantor and after-dinner speaker The word shtetl, (rhymes with kettle) has become very significant in Jewish history, largely due to such smash hits as Fiddler on the Roof, Milk and Honey and others that have extended its comedy to the present day. The shtetl was the ghetto village, usually very poor, where Jews in Eastern Europe were forced to live. The shtetl culture, often romanticized, was not necessarily a happy one, but out of this adversity there grew an unprecedented and extraordinarily rich history of comedy—commonly referred to as Jewish Humor. Through the use of performance DVDs and other media, this course will describe and illustrate the sweeping arc of this history by tracing Jewish comedy from its researched beginning in 17th-century Eastern Europe to the Broadway stage, of the last 40 or more years. As recently as a few short years ago it was determined that about 7075% of American stand-up comics were Jews who used Jewish humor as their performance vehicle. It is a rich history, emcompassing street players, stage performances, talking movies, TV and other entertainment media. View performances by such Jewish comedy greats as Myron Cohen, Sid Caesar, Mel Brooks and others. Hoffman, former board member and former President, The Safe Haven Museum and Education Center This little-known story of the triumph of the human spirit took place in our own back yard, in Fort Ontario, Oswego, New York! It was here, in August 1944, that 982 refugees of the Holocaust were brought as guests of President Franklin D. Roosevelt to experience temporary shelter and establish new lives. They came from 22 different countries—more from Yugoslavia than any other country—and were adherents of four major religions: Jewish, Catholic, Protestant and Eastern Orthodox. Eighty-nine percent of the refugees were Jewish. Their tale traces the origin of the venture, the wartime voyage across the Atlantic, their lives in Fort Ontario and the subsequent lives and achievements of the people involved. Tuesdays Feb 17 - Feb 24 10:00 - 12:00 Fee: $24 2 sessions OASIS Studio A History of the Cold War 128 Charles Coon, retired Social Studies Teacher, Baker High School, adjunct Professor of History, Onondaga Community College and SUNY College at Cortland, and adjunct Professor of Educational Methods, SUNY College at Oswego Russia’s 1917 revolution impacted American domestic and foreign policy for nearly 50 years! It would lead to American military forays into Siberia in the 1920s, questions about United States recognition of the Soviet Union in the 1930s, American military assistance in the 1940s and, almost as soon as World War II ended, the emergence of the Cold War. The domestic hunt for Communists and Fellow Travelers followed in the 1940s and 1950s. The 1960s witnessed spying, CIA issues, military adventures and the overthrow of governments in Latin America, as well as major conflicts in Korea and Vietnam and the potential for nuclear Armageddon. ONLINE REGISTRATION Attempts at detente gave way to glasnost, perestroika, and finally the end of the Soviet Union in the 1980s and early 1990s. And more! Mondays Feb 2 - Feb 23 1:00 - 2:30 Fee: $36 4 sessions OASIS Lecture Hall Have You Read the Constitution? 129 Thomas Henry, MS, retired Social Studies Teacher, Liverpool High School, and Adjunct Professor of History, SUNY Cortland In today’s rancorous political debates, inevitably an opponent of almost any speaker will shout out, “Have you read the Constitution?” The real question is, “How are you interpreting the reading of the Constitution?” In this class we will actually read the Constitution, and will discuss the origins of some of the current and traditional interpretations of key portions of the original seven articles. Bring a copy of the Constitution that you can write on as we engage in a good, old-fashioned document study and have some fun, too. Mondays Mar 2 - Mar 23 2:00 - 4:00 Fee: $41 4 sessions OASIS Lecture Hall The Presidents Part VII: the End 130 of an Era, Cleveland to Theodore Roosevelt Thomas Henry, MS, retired Social Studies Teacher, Liverpool High School, and Adjunct Professor of History, SUNY Cortland The last two decades of the 19th Century brought dramatic change to America. Inventions and innovations changed lifestyles, as did urbanization, changes in labor, mass immigration and a growing interest in overseas expansion. The last of the Civil War Presidents, Cleveland, Harrison and McKinley, would have to face a rapidly changing country and challenges to the political system brought about by a new generation of politicians such as Theodore Roosevelt. We will continue to view the men who occupied the presidency and their impact on the office through this dynamic period. There is no need to have been in prior courses to enjoy this one! Note: Class meets at the Nottingham, 1301 Nottingham Road, Jamesville 13078. New technologies, waves of immigrants, and the rise of the industrial sector placed new challenges on both the nation and its Presidents. In this class we will look at the dynamic Teddy Roosevelt and also his less exuberant but no less interesting contemporaries through Woodrow Wilson. There is no need to have taken any of the other President courses to enjoy this one! Wednesdays Apr 1 - Apr 22 5:00 - 7:00 Fee: $41 4 sessions OASIS Lecture Hall Moderated by Renee-Noelle Felice, living-historian, writer, storyteller, educator and “herstory” buff In celebration of Women in History month, Renee-Noelle Felice, living historian, will introduce three 19th-century women who, in very different ways, made important contributions to society. The American Revolution for 132 Beginners, Part III: the Real Revolution Session two: Matilda Joslyn Gage (1826-1898) worked for over thirty years with Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan Brownell Anthony to get the vote for women. A resident of Fayetteville, New York, Mrs. Gage supported abolition, espoused equality for women in every aspect of their lives, was given the name “She Who Holds the Sky” by the clan mothers of the Mohawk nation, and was an unrelenting supporter of religious freedom. Gloria Steinem has called her “the woman who was ahead of the women who were ahead of their time.” Thomas Henry, MS, retired Social Studies Teacher, Liverpool High School, and Adjunct Professor of History, SUNY Cortland It can fairly be said that the real American Revolution took place after the shooting stopped in 1783. Now it was up to the newly independent Americans to deliver on the promise of liberty while establishing order and stability in a very diverse, enormous land space. We will look at the early attempts at governance, the creation of the Constitution and the challenges to the new government that were firmly rooted in the Revolution through the critical election of 1800. Attendance in the earlier courses is not necessary to have some fun in this one! Note: Class meets at the Nottingham, 1301 Nottingham Road, Jamesville 13078. A widow with a sevenyear-old son, speaking virtually no English, she became a cook for the staff of the Sandy Hook, New Jersey lighthouse, where she met and married John Walker, the assistant keeper. When her husband was promoted to head keeper of the Robbins Reef Lighthouse, a water-bound light between Staten Island and Manhattan, she was made assistant keeper. After her husband’s death, Mrs. Walker was given the job of head keeper, a post she held for over thirty years. In all that time, the light never went out. All the participants committed themselves to the goals of the campaign, including the following: “Since the beginning of the relations between our two peoples, the goal of the Two Row Wampum Treaty has been the alternative to removal, assimilation, patronizing relations and the policies of attempted genocide. We hereby promise to renew the Two Row, to polish the silver chain of friendship between our peoples beginning today and for many generations to come.” This campaign began and was nurtured here in Syracuse, but attracted participants from all over the United States and The Netherlands. Buffy and Liselei boast that in their own kayak with just the two of them paddling, they had 123 years of experience! The story focuses on the missionary experience of the Jesuits: their strategies, challenges, and successes as ambassadors and evangelists to the native people. What www.facebook.com/SyracuseOasis ARE the religions of the axial age (ca. 500 BCE-500 CE), and what ARE some of the turnings that have been and are happening on that axis? Where has religion been through the ages, and where might it be going into the future? Will there be religion after the “religions?” Will there be gods after the “death of God?” Fridays Mar 6 - Apr 17 1:00 - 3:00 Fee: $57 6 sessions OASIS Studio No class 4/3 The Origins of Judaism and Christianity138 Susan Wright, MA, Theology, Bexley Hall Episcopal Seminary, Lecturer, Writer, Blogger on religion, scripture interpretation and religious history Until recently religious scholars tended to reduce the historical relationship between Judaism and Christianity to a sort of parent-child relationship, portraying Judaism as the stern and demanding parent and Christianity as the rebellious child which claimed its independence. The relationship was often framed by Christian scholars within a secessionist model, which for centuries fostered a negative portrait of Judaism as overly preoccupied with protecting itself from outside influences and in particular new innovations on part of the early Christians. The secessionist model reduced Judaism’s historical role to a mere preparation for the emergence of Christianity. Recent scholarship, however has revealed the relationship between Judaism and Christianity to be far more complex, especially when it comes to the parting of the ways of the two religions. Engaging with Jewish and Christian scholars, we’ll look in depth at how and when the two religions took their different pathways and hopefully in the process we’ll cast off the negative and reductionist assumptions inherited from the past. This course will utilize slides and other visual media to illustrate this tradition’s rich history and motifs. Mondays Jan 26 - Mar 2 10:00 - 12:00 Fee: $54 6 sessions OASIS Lecture Hall The Bible in History: How the Texts Have Shaped the Times 139 David E. Pasinski, M.Div., MA, Theology, St. Bonaventure, MA, Marriage and Family Therapy, Syracuse University, MA, Public Administration, Syracuse University What shapes history? Most agree that an understanding of philosophies and ideologies of an age are critical in such an evaluation. David Kling’s book by the above title is a fascinating look at eight Biblical texts that have helped shape not only religious, but also key aspects of world history. In a thorough examination of these passages and the persons affected by them, Kling reviews in great detail everything from the emergence of the Christian church and tolerance through the monastic era to the clashes of the Reformation. He addresses the notions of revolution, slavery and its opposition, women’s rights and others with acute detail and considers the celebrated individuals that were influenced by Biblical ideals. This course examines these texts and arguments in their theological and historical contexts and encourages discussion that may be applicable to our era. While having one’s own book is helpful, PowerPoint summaries are used for two texts examined in each class. Discussion is encouraged. The book is available in paperback through various sources. Spiegel, MS, former Vice-President and Senior Managing Scientist, O’Brien & Gere The history of achieving clean water in the U.S. has been a very bumpy ride that started in the late 1800s. We will look back at the approach to clean water, and the incremental steps to achieve it. Topics will focus on how logs in waterways and river fires in Cleveland led to the Clean Water Act. The legislation will be deconstructed to reveal what it includes and what it does not. We will 30 www.upstate.edu/oasis www.facebook.com/SyracuseOasis discuss stormwater and the community, watershed protection, the relationship to the Safe Drinking Water Act, how bottled water is regulated and whether our water is cleaner now than in the past. Lastly, we will become acquainted with new challenges in water quality: endocrine disruptors, nanoparticles, plastic beads, pharmaceuticals in water and the impact of climate change on clean water programs. Mondays Apr 6 - Apr 13 10:00 - 12:00 Fee: $18 2 sessions OASIS Studio Climate and Global Warming 504 Len Sharp, MS, CAS, retired Earth Science teacher, Liverpool High School; adjunct professor of Education at LeMoyne College; National Science Teachers Association Distinguished Teacher Awardee and Presidential Awardee in Science Teaching Under the tutelage of former Vice President and Nobel Laureate, Al Gore, instructor Len Sharp has completed two rigorous climate change training programs to spread the message about the threat of and solutions to global climate change. Do the severe tornado outbreaks of the past spring have anything to do with climate change? Are the droughts devastating China and Eastern Africa associated with worldwide climate pattern changes? Did you know that 2014 was one of the warmest years on record for Earth? Is there evidence that sea levels are rising? Is the sea becoming more acidic? What are the connections between these events and global climate change? And– the big question–is global climate change caused by anthropogenic factors (humankind) or is it a function of natural cycles? We will consider • What is global climate change? • What are the causes of global climate change? • What evidence is there of human impact on climate? • What can we do individually and collectively to reverse and/or stabilize the warming trend? • How can we become more energy efficient at home and work? Mon. & Wed. Apr 13 - Apr 15 1:00 - 3:00 Fee: $26 2 sessions OASIS Lecture Hall Winter Spring 2015 Tale of Three Cities Buried by 505 Catastrophic Volcanic Eruptions: Akrotiri on the island of Santorini, Greece; Pompeii, Italy; and St. Pierre, Martinique Len Sharp, MS, CAS, retired Earth Science teacher, Liverpool High School; adjunct professor of Education at LeMoyne College; National Science Teachers Association Distinguished Teacher Awardee and Presidential Awardee in Science Teaching, and world traveler Explore three cities, forever frozen in historical time, which have given us a snapshot into the daily lives of their citizens—people who in a moment of cataclysmic eruption were essentially blasted from the face of the Earth. Is Akrotiri (Thera, 1625 BC) the source of Plato’s Atlantis? Why are there no bodies or great treasures found in Akrotiri’s ruins? What happened to the ancient Minoan? What was the seaport of Pompeii (Vesuvius, 79 AD) like before disaster struck? Why were there so many lives lost at Pompeii? Mt. Pelee (1902) gave the Martinique populous plenty of time to escape, but still 31,000+ persons perished. Why? Wednesdays Feb 25 - Mar 4 10:00 - 12:00 Fee: $26 2 sessions OASIS Lecture Hall Ends of the Earth 506 Len Sharp, MS, CAS, retired Earth Science teacher, Liverpool High School; adjunct professor of Education at LeMoyne College; National Science Teachers Association Distinguished Teacher Awardee and Christa McAuliffe Fellow Instructor Len Sharp was granted a Christa McAuliffe Fellowship (named after the teacher who lost her life aboard NASA’s shuttle Challenger in 1986) to travel to Antarctica, Greenland and Iceland, which launched his quest to study and visit selected natural areas and/or archeological sites on all seven continents. Join Len as he shares his observations, experiences and stories about some of the most spectacular nature on our planet, as well as ancient archeological endeavors of humankind. Len will recount his adventures in places such as Antarctica, Greenland, Iceland, Pompeii, Egypt, Australia, Machu Picchu, the Pribilof Islands, Hawaii and Point Barrow. Thursdays Feb 5 - Feb 12 1:30 - 3:30 Fee: $26 2 sessions OASIS Lecture Hall (315) 464 - 6555 31 Science Fiction Movies: a Historical Perspective, 1905 - Present 507 Len Sharp, MS, CAS, retired Earth Science teacher, Liverpool High School; adjunct professor of Education, LeMoyne College; National Science Teachers Association Distinguished Teacher Awardee and recipient of the NSTA Film Award in 1996 Instructor Len Sharp fondly remembers growing up during the 1950s Golden Age of Science and being mesmerized by creatures becoming giants or miniaturized by atomic radiation. It seemed as if the universe was primarily inhabited by aliens bent on taking Earth as a colony to enslave its people or rob Earth of its natural resources! The film When Worlds Collide was an early effort by Hollywood to explore what humans would do in the event of a cosmic collision. Forty years later the theme was revisited in Armageddon and Deep Impact. Len has been collecting Science Fiction films for twenty years, and has acquired nearly 700 movies and television programs. From the first Sci-fi movie produced by Melies in 1902, Trip to the Moon, to present films such as Armageddon, Contact, The Day After Tomorrow and Jurassic Park, the question has always been how accurately science has been portrayed. Armageddon was actually used by NASA to train its management staff because of an identified 166 misconceptions depicted in the film. However, some films have been precursors to future scientific developments. A few examples are Destination Moon (space travel, 1950), Fantasia (dinosaur theory, 1940), Star Trek [original TV series], (communication, space travel, 1966-68), and Gattaca (genetics, 1997). Join the instructor on a journey through science fiction in film and explore how science has been portrayed over the past 109 years of movie magic! Winter Spring 2015 (315) 464 - 6555 43 Special Programs & Services Art Walls at OASIS Reach Out and Read Art Walls is a continuous art exhibit program that displays the works of OASIS artists on the walls of the OASIS hallways and classrooms and is coordinated by Evelyn Fiorenza, OASIS Art Instructor, and Peter Huntington, OASIS member and artist. Note: Artwork to be displayed in the fall trimester should be dropped off at OASIS between December 15 and January 13. This is a program that promotes early literacy by bringing new and gently used books into pediatric exam and waiting rooms and encouraging parents to read aloud to their children. Volunteers read aloud to children, serving as an example to parents of the effectiveness of reading in entertaining children and in helping them learn. Since 1989, Reach Out and Read pediatricians have been prescribing books for their young patients at more than 2,000 hospitals and health centers. Reach Out and Read has been offered at University Hospital’s Pediatric and Adolescent Center since 1990. Please consider volunteering your time to read aloud to children in the waiting room at University Hospital, our OASIS sponsor. Training and volunteer support are offered to assure a positive experience for all. Interested? Call Marsha Kernan, MA, CCLS, Child Life Specialist, Upstate Medical University, at 464-2084.
