WE ARE AFRA FURNITURE. 41 THE RIALTO THEATRE The Rialto Theatre is one of the most iconic buildings in Montréal. An essential element of the restoration’s mandate was to protect and preserve the unique architecture, graceful proportions and elegant details of the theatre. Afra Furniture was successful in fulfilling this mandate. Designing a theatre chair is a collaborative process. We use the universal language of design to create unique environments that reflect the distinct identity and culture desired by designers. OUR MANDATE Design, produce and install custom theatre chairs. KEY FEATURES • Custom designed seating to fit the specific shape, size and style of the Rialto Theatre •Durability •Comfort • Acoustic performance The following pages detail the detailed steps Afra took to successfully complete this beautiful project. 42 43 THE RIALTO THEATRE 1 INSPIRATION We proposed different chair models in line with the budget, setting and architectural vision to establish the creative vision of the mandate. DESIGN FRAMEWORK: Wood inspired features • Wooden back • Wooden backrest • Wooden armrests 2 FUNCTIONAL DESIGN We began with two custom-designed chair drawings which complimented both the building and floor plan. Our chair design evolved toward a more ergonomic shape featuring a backrest suited to the tight space between each row. 44 3 3D RENDERS We proceeded to transform our initial drawings into 3D renders. Two chair-design concepts were presented to the Rialto. 4 LAYOUT We used three different chair dimensions to create an initial layout optimised to seat 525 persons. All National Building Code requirements were taken into account. Chairs were positioned into cross-sections which left sufficient exit space between each row. 45 THE RIALTO THEATRE 5 DESIGN DETAILS The design details were inspired by a custom velvet provided by the Rialto owner. We proposed using both a custom stain finish with PU lacquer to embrace the elegant details of the Rialto’s unique architecture, as well as a highly-resistant fireretardant German foam. Our proposal included varying foam densities for both the back and seat covers. 6 PROTOTYPE Within one month of design, we produced the final prototype for approval. 7 CHAIR NUMBERING We designed the final layout by numbering chairs on one side of theatre using odd numbers, while numbering chairs on the other side using even numbers, thereby rendering the ushers’ work less confusing. 8 MANUFACTURING In collaboration with Stol Kamnik, we completed production within two months. Stol Kamnik brought its 100-year experience in the fabrication of theatre, auditorium and conference chairs to the project. 9 INSTALLATION All chairs were assembled and installed in the Rialto Theatre within 7 days. 10 RESULT A unique seating experience that met the requirements and expectations of all stakeholders. 46 «The process was perfect from beginning to end. We were looking for something comfortable but with an old world feel. Their advice and counsel was inestimable. They keep us informed throughout the process and adjustments were made along the way. We are thoroughly happy with the result and equally happy with the way the whole process was handled. We highly recommend them!» Ezio Carosielli | Owner 47 THE HAMBAR HOTEL PROJECT The Hambar Restaurant won first prize at the Retail Design Institute Awards for its interior design. Located on the ground floor of the Hotel St. Paul in Old Montréal, clients can sit either at the over-sized communal table in the middle of the restaurant, at the molded wood-slab bar, or on the raised platform along the windows overlooking Place d’Youville. The delicatessen counter is abuzz with frenetic activity as the on‑site butcher tries to keep pace with the steady stream of orders. «The majestic volume of sparkling surfaces is tempered by masculine tones of leather and walnut dispersed throughout a convivial and always bustling urban scene.» GH+A PROUD WINNER OF THE 48 49 THE ZYARA PROJECT Located in the heart of Quartier DIX30, Zyara offers the best of Lebanese and Mediterranean gastronomy. Upon entering, the outstanding design, lighting effects and mirrors, clever furniture, captivating music and smartly-dressed staff make the experience feel like a vacation. Clients immerse themselves in a warm and colourful environment for a taste of the finest Lebanese traditions. «The decor looks like something out of a Mediterranean Sex and the City episode, with a lot of colourful accents in a well-thought-out design.» Carrie Macpherson | Zurbaines.com 50 51 THE BRASERO PROJECT The Brasero Hardi restaurant, nestled in picturesque Old Montréal, offers a variety of grilled dishes in a trendy and eclectic decor inspired by hotspots in New York. We fabricated custom soft‑seating chairs and barstools to evoke a New York Art‑Deco style. A personalized stained finish gives the bentwood chairs and barstools a gorgeous antique look and feel. The tiles and art works add a touch of Art Deco to this new and refreshing environment where people come to meet. 52 53 DESIGNED BY LEADING DESIGNERS, WE BRING PERFECTION TO LIFE. We pay particular attention to the products we use and employee working conditions to design and produce products that are durable and Evergreen.» Toan Nguyen Toan Nguyen was born in Paris in 1969 and graduated in Industrial Design at ENSCI-Les Ateliers in Paris in 1995. He gained experience in several design studios in Paris, Barcelona and Milan. Having collaborated with Antonio Citterio for ten years as design director and design partner and signing products for many brands such as B&B Italia, Flos, Fusital, Guzzini, Potocco, Kartell, Skantherm or Vitra, Toan Nguyen founded his own design studio based in Milan in 2008. 54 Claudio Dondoli & Marco Pocci Technology does not exist to create an image, but rather to serve the consumer. To deliver real quality, a good product designer must therefore deliver attraction, utility and comfort. Archirivolto has collaborated with Pedrali, Ligne Roset, Bonaldo, Desalto, Fasem and many others. «There is no beauty without functionality: this is, for us at Archirivolto, the most innovative synthesis of design.» Ib Kofod Larsen Ib Kofod Larsen’s (1921-2003) clean Danish design is obviously attractive, showcasing his stylish preference for high arms and sloping backs with organic use of materials. He was also known as the colleague of the famous Hans J. Wegner and Borge Modensen. As they did, he evolvedfrom carpentry to architecte school. Kofod Larsen was one of the most influential designers at England’s G-Plan furniture maker. Some of his designs influence the minimalist contemporary pieces being designed today. Shown above: The Elizabeth sofa and chair, 1956. Werther Toffoloni The essence of all Werther Toffoloni designs have consistently realized the ideal fusion between the aesthetic and design, which maintain balance in not only in production processes, but also in between uses and the environments for which the products are intended for. This has been the single most dominant ideal of his work since the beginning of his design career. Toffoloni has clearly been influenced by the theories of Bauhaus and the research of “gute forme”, which were strongly emphasized during his professional training.
