Welcome to the summer
edition of Current News!
It has been a very busy few months for
us and our three chapters. As you will
read on the following pages we have
introduced new training courses, raised
thousands of dollars for the Food Bank
and had a terrific annual CECA
Conference in Whistler. In addition we
welcomed Ron Fettback as our new
Chairman of the Board.
With summer comes some time to
relax. While we have our feet up,
spending time enjoying our friends and
families, we are also preparing
ourselves for the fall season. I look
forward to the many events ahead
including the NECA Conference in Las
Vegas at the end of September.
In our last newsletter you learned a little
bit about our history and the ECABC
Hall of Fame. Our 60th Anniversary
continues and we celebrated our
heritage at the CECA Conference in
Whistler. We formally inducted three
new members into our Hall of
Fame...welcome Doug Hutton, George
Ingham and Hank Paquin. Before the
inductions outgoing Board Chairman
Robert Lashin recognized Bob Alger
and Danny Mott for their work and
contribution to our industry and
association. It was a great night! (Read

newsletter)

2012 CECA Conference Review: Whistler, BC; June 13 to 17
The annual CECA Conference was held in
Whistler hosted by the Canadian Electrical
Contractors Association at The Four
Seasons Resort. The theme was "A
Mountain of Possibilities" and attracted 263
attendees from across the country. It was
a busy week for us all with engaging
workshops, and interesting key note
speakers who covered subjects from new
technology, environmental issues, the
world economy and globalization of our
markets. In addition we had an
opportunity to enjoy the beauty of Whistler
with day excursions including golf, river
rafting and a helicopter glacier tour.
Many people had never been to Whistler
before and despite the poor weather, all
were captivated by the beauty of the
area.
For me, the highlight of the conference
was ECABC's Diamond Dinner on Friday
night. It was another event in ECABC's
60th anniversary celebration. The evening
featured the induction of Doug Hutton,
Doug Hutton / Hall of Fame
Page 2
George Ingham and Hank Paquin into our
Hall of Fame. The dinner was held in the
Roundhouse at the top of Whistler
Mountain. The night started with a
breathtaking 25 minute gondola ride up
the mountain. The weather cooperated
allowing a fabulous view of the village
and surrounding terrain.
Upon arrival our guests enjoyed socializing
with a Diamond Dinner cocktail reception
before dinner. Everyone had their photos
taken which they were given at the end
of the evening courtesy of our sponsors
NEDCO, FM Installations, WESCO and
MERCEDES - BENZ. Before the Hall of
Fame inductions, Robert Lashin
recognized Bob Alger and Dan Mott for
their work in the industry and with ECABC.
After the Hall of Fame inductions, I
thanked our outgoing chairman Robert
Lashin with a weekend to Seattle
including tickets to the King Tut exhibition.
On behalf of the Board and all of our
members, thank you Robert for your
leadership and hard work!
George Ingham / Hall of Fame
The conference was wrapped up on
Saturday with an ECABC Board
Meeting, Chapter Chair Meeting and
our Annual General Meeting. That
evening the conference closed with
a formal Gala Dinner and Dance
featuring the six piece band Dr.
Strangelove. It was a wonderful
evening.
Thanks again to our sponsors, our
office staff; Samaya and Lynn, our
Hall of Famers and our volunteers
who helped make the conference
and our Diamond Dinner a huge
success.

Electrical Safety Training System (ESTS) - Arc Flash & Shock Training
The ECABC is proud to be working with Terry Becker, P.Eng the owner of Electrical
Safety Program Solutions INC. (ESPS).
The ESTS is a state of the art, adult oriented arc flash and shock training program. It is
fully narrated, uses photos, videos, graphics, interactive elements and a 3D Virtual
Electrical Workplace (e.g. MCC/Electrical Room) to teach the student how to apply
the tools within the CSA Z462 Workplace Electrical Safety Standards. Upon successful
completion of the course, attendees will have the knowledge and skills to mitigate or
reduce exposure to the electrical hazards of arc flash and shock.
The ESTS is a detailed and comprehensive program which usually takes students
between 4 and 6 hours to complete. You can learn at your own pace.
ESTS Training is recommended for Electrical Workers, Supervisors, Electrical Engineers,
Instrumentation Mechanics, HVAC Technicians, HSE Professionals and other workers
who need to manage or may be exposed to the electrical hazards of arc flash and
shock.

The Electrical Project Supervision (EPS) Level 1:
EPS Level 1 Course
This course is available to all association members in the province. This three-day NECA
program is the first of a three-level series designed to strengthen the abilities of project
supervisors at all levels. Newer supervisors will broaden their understanding of the
responsibilities of a supervisor and learn tools and techniques to better fulfill those
responsibilities. Experienced supervisors will update their understanding of supervision,
strengthen their skills in traditional areas and develop new skills in emerging areas. Here
is our fall schedule:
- Vancouver
- Prince George
- Victoria
September 27 - 29
November 1 - 3
November 8 - 9
Basic Estimating:
This course is for those with little or no experience in estimating, and those seasoned
estimators looking to improve their skills. Materials include textbook, Manual of Labor
Units, reference books, sample drawing, and specification and work sheets for each
student. This course is a must for those who find themselves frustrated by the current bid
market and continue to question their efforts in compiling a "competitive" bid. The
principles taught will help you eliminate careless mistakes, which can cost your
company its very existence.

ECABC Vancouver Chapter Report
Greetings from the Vancouver
Chapter! We've had a busy few
months...
Our 12th Annual Golf Tournament was
sold out. Thanks to everyone, from our
golf committee to players, sponsors
and to Canuck's legend King Richard
Brodeur who attended again this
year. Together we helped raise over
$9,000 for the Vancouver Food Bank.
You can read the full article in this
newsletter.
The CECA Conference held in
Whistler was well attended and
congratulations to conference
organizers and our ECABC team who
planned our Hall of Fame Diamond
Dinner.
On June 20 a group of 42 members,
spouses and guests attended a
Vancouver Whitecaps soccer match
in an executive suite...the 'Caps lost
by a late New York goal but it didn't
seem to ruin our evening.
In the fall the Vancouver Chapter will
be hosting our AGM in September
featuring Grant McMillan from COCA
who will talk about the recent
legislation on stress leave and how it
could affect your business. Our new
product night in October will focus on
LED lighting products, and our Meet
and Greet in November will be held
at the Shangri La Hotel. Stay tuned
for more details on these events.

ECABC Interior Chapter Report
We have been working towards
building our chapter and I am happy
to report that we have a few new
events planned in the coming
months. We believe with the help of
the association and the new
executive that our chapter will see
increasing numbers for our
membership and upcoming
meetings. Our goal is to build these
numbers with improved
communication and awareness
showing the advantages our
association can provide.
The work situation in the Prince
George area and including the
northern region is progressing and
very strong right now. We are
continually seeing new projects come
out for tender in both the private and
public sectors which will put pressure
on local companies to provide the
Page 6
needed services. The man power
problem will get increasingly worse as
the shortage of skilled workers is
already an issue. There is an
abundance of new apprentices in
the area but it is hard to put them to
work without the skilled journeyman
to train them.
Upcoming Special Events:
- September 19th will see our first
annual joint golf tournament with the
mechanical contractors. It is a Texas
Scramble format, so we are looking
forward to a well attended event by
players of all skill levels. Download
Golf Registration Form.
* Form also located on ECABC website.
PG with the contractors vs. the
wholesalers. We are looking at a
date this fall or early next year. Stay
tuned...
- We are also planning a Winter
Curling Fun Spiel for our Chapter at
the local curling club here in PG.
Date and details to follow.
- We will be hosting a supplier trade
show here in Prince George with a
format similar to the event planned
by the Vancouver chapter.
Have a great summer!

ECABC Vancouver Island Chapter Report
The Vancouver Island Chapter has
kept busy this spring and summer with
a few events and we are pleased
with the feedback we've been
receiving from members and new
prospects. As you can see from the list
below we have a full schedule for the
months ahead. I would like to thank
everyone who has attended and
especially all those who helped
coordinate these events along with
the ECABC office staff. Your efforts
are much appreciated!
Our Vancouver Island Chapter Fishing
Derby was held July 5th and 6th at
the Steep Island Lodge overlooking
the ocean in the Discovery Passage
near Campbell River. It's a terrific
spot. When you're not fishing you can
relax on the huge deck and watch
the cruise ships sail by.
We kicked off our stay with an
excellent dinner followed by an
evening of friendship, foosball and
pool. We enjoyed a few refreshments
and as the evening wore on the
music got louder. We woke up to
sunshine and warm weather the next
morning and had a great day fishing.
Congratulations to Ross Richards, of
United Rentals, who pulled in the
biggest salmon at 32 lbs, and to Jake
Russell of Houle Electric who caught
the biggest rock fish - a 10 pound
cod. Other notable catches were a
29 pound spring by David Herman
and a 27 pounder by Mike Crucil. Not
everyone was as lucky as we had a
few guys get skunked.
I would like to send my thanks out to
Roy Carter, for helping organize this
event once again this year.

Vancouver Chapter Golf Tournament Donates Over $9,000 to Vancouver Food Bank!
Thanks to everyone who participated in the 11th annual ECABC Vancouver Chapter Golf Tournament at The Surrey Golf Club
on May 24th. Together we helped raise $9,279.34 for The Vancouver Food Bank who serves over 27,000 people each week.
The proceeds from our tournament will go towards feeding school aged children who unfortunately start their day without
breakfast. According to Vancouver Food Bank Director, Doug Aason, approximately 8,500 kids will benefit in the coming
months. In fact, each dollar raised by the ECABC Vancouver Chapter Golf Tournament, buys $3 in food. (That's over
$27,800!!)
This is a huge contribution and congratulations to all players, sponsors and our corporate partners who donated prizes and
silent auction items! THANK YOU to our golf committee for organizing one of the best tournaments we've ever had! See you
all next year!
