d d ii aa kk o on n Donor Blessings 2011 Donor Report p a r t n e r • i n v e s t • s u p p o r t Former orphan leaves bequest to Diakon Endowment will benefit children When Martha Lester graduated from the Tressler Orphans Home to attend college, she left behind the place that had been her home since age 4, a place whose impact on her life she never forgot. When Lester passed away last year, shortly after her 90th birthday, she left 25 percent of her estate to Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries—which continues the ministries of the Tressler Lutheran Home for Children—to establish an endowment for children, a gift of which Diakon was unaware until her passing. The gift’s value to the not-for-profit organization is tremendous, says MaryEllen Dickey, senior vice president for Advancement. “We are very appreciative of a gift like this because it helps us with our future,” she says. “Without endowment dollars and gifts of this size, it would be very challenging for us to fund our programs and serve as many people in need as we do.” Making a bequest such as Lester’s is also a way to support a personal mission, adds Dickey. “Many people really have a heart for supporting an organization’s mission but are unable to do so during their lifetime because of other financial obligations. The majority of our large gifts typically come at someone’s death.” Lester, who earned a degree in chemistry and worked as a chemical technician, met her husband when they both worked for the same company, according to her step-daughter. “They were together for a long time, close to 30 years, traveling around the country and Europe,” says Susan Meltzer, adding that Lester continued to attend the Lutheran Church throughout her life. “She did a lot for my father. There are two types of encounters Mark T. Pile, I especially enjoy as president/ MSHA, MSW, Diakon President/CEO CEO of Diakon. The first are those experiences with our valued staff and the clients they serve—in which the true impact of our ministries become so apparent. The second occur when I meet with donors. While I certainly have not had the opportunity to greet all of our donors, I continue to focus on meeting as many of our dedicated supporters as I can. To hear of their commitment to our programs—and of the satisfaction and value they gain from their association with us—is inspiring and humbling. Again, you are one of our most valued partners—those who give of themselves and of their resources, with no thought of personal gain—to enable us annually to touch the lives of hurting neighbors. Because of your thoughtfulness, compassion, and dedication, people facing difficult challenges receive counseling … youths who need extra support to become successful adults gain the mentoring they need … and older adults who exhaust their financial resources continue to receive life-enriching care. If I have not had the chance to greet you personally, please accept this brief note as my appreciation for the vital role you play in enabling so much service to our neighbors in need. In 2011, Diakon provided more than $1 million a month in uncompensated care. This Diakon funding reflects Diakon’s benevolentcare promise to those individuals. Diakon Lutheran Fund Board of Directors The Diakon Lutheran Fund Board of Directors oversees Diakon’s endowment funds and other investments, a significant portion of which generate income specifically to support services for children and families.
