di ak on Donor Blessings 2009 Donor Report p a r t n e r • i n v e s t • s u p p o r t Women’s 5K Classic of Lehigh County helps girls stay healthy in body and mind Wendy Body not only enjoys running as a hobby, but also loves combining her interest in the sport with helping people. As co-founder and director of the nonprofit Women’s 5K Classic of Lehigh County, organized in 1993, Body has seen firsthand how funds raised from the annual event have benefitted women and girls in the county. The organization promotes wellness among women and girls, supports women with breast and female cancers, and educates women about cancer awareness, prevention, and treatment. The race consists of a 3.1mile run and walk held in the Little Lehigh Parkway in Allentown, Pa., every October. “We are the fourth-largest all-female event in the country and have funded close to 1.5 million dollars worth of local programs in the Lehigh Valley since we started 17 years ago. We are not just about breast cancer, but about improving women’s well being by promoting fitness,” says Body. As part of its mission to improve the health of girls in the community, the Women’s 5K Classic is the Legacy Partner of Girls on the Run® of Lehigh County, a non-profit prevention program that encourages preteen girls to develop selfrespect and healthy lifestyles through running. In 2007, Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries became the exclusive licensee of Girls on the Run of Lehigh County. The program’s curricula address all aspects of girls’ development, including their physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual well-being. A non-competitive 5K event is the culmination of each season. Girls on the Run International is the parent organization of more than 160 Girls on the Run councils across the United States and Canada; Diakon Family Life Services in the Upper Susquehanna region also sponsors a GOTR council in Lycoming County. “If we can get girls into fitness at a young age, they are statistically less likely to get pregnant, drop out of school, develop health issues, get depressed, and start smoking. We want to make a difference in their lives and what better way to do so than to participate in the run,” says Body. “We helped get the Lehigh program started in 2006 with a $15,000 donation and have donated $15,000 per year since then for a total of $60,000,” she adds. “We are proud to be affiliated with such a wonderful organization as Girls on the Run and honored to help them to make a difference in the lives of our future women.” Samantha Schneck, council director of Girls on the Run of Lehigh County, says the organization greatly relies on funding from the Women’s 5K Classic Organization and other community organizations to maintain the program, which has 15 sites for the spring program. While the program’s licensing agency recommends a minimum registration fee of $150 per participant, Diakon Family Life Services – Northeastern Pennsylvania, which operates the program in Lehigh County, has made the decision to offer the program at the modest fee of $65 per participant, with an additional sliding-fee scale for families that face the greatest financial challenges. “It is our mission to ensure that financial need doesn’t prohibit any girl from participating and many of our partner sites are located in some of the most economically challenged neighborhoods in Lehigh County,” says Schneck. Current fees help to offset the total cost, but are able only to support a small percentage of the total program expenses. “As a result, fundraising is a central component of the program,” she says, “and Diakon’s advancement team is committed to continually raising funds for the program.” Efforts includes requests to local, regional, and national foundations and other grant sources, as well as requests for funding from individuals and corporations. In 2009, 95% of all registered participants received a scholarship provided by Diakon Family Life Services to participate in the program. A community event that has a significant impact on thousands of people in the Lehigh Valley, the Women’s 5K Classic will be held Oct. 16, with more than 6,000 participants expected this year. In 2009, Diakon provided more than $1 million a month in uncompensated care. The total includes $361,145 for care for those in senior living/assisted living communities Diakon sold in 2005, fulfilling the organization’s benevolent-care promise. DB-15 Trust enables couple to reward Diakon for ‘a life full of blessings’ William and Twila Sote did not inherit wealth, nor did they spend their lives working at high-paying jobs. They were a down-to-earth, self-made couple who had no children. Through hard work, great savings, and astute investing, the William Sote Charitable Trust, of which Diakon is a grateful recipient, came into being. Established in 1998, the trust will continue to give to others on behalf of the Sotes. Twila Sote died in 2001 and her husband seven years later, at the age of 102. They had lived at The Lutheran Home at Topton, a Diakon Senior Living Community in Topton, Pa., for more than 25 years. “Bill was a very frugal man, never spending a single penny more than necessary,” says Shelly Sweigart, assistant director of nursing at the Topton senior living community. “He was the kind of person who didn’t want a lot of money spent on him.” Born in Germany, William Sote came to the United States in 1924. He spent several years in Ohio and Michigan, working on farms. In 1928 he moved to Reading, Pa., in search of better opportunity. He purchased, refurbished, and then resold residential properties until he joined the Army in 1942, serving for several years with honor and distinction. After being discharged as a staff sergeant in 1946, he was employed by Luden’s Candy Co. as a machine setup and maintenance technician. In 1953, he married Twila, who taught fourth grade in the public schools. In 1974, after both had retired, the Sotes moved to a cottage at The Lutheran Home at Topton. There they resided until Twila’s death, after which Bill moved to the community’s health care center. “Bill was very devoted to his wife; he just adored her,” says Toni Markey, Topton case manager. “She had very long hair and when her health started to fail he would visit her every day and braid her hair. He wanted to take her home in the worst way.” Markey says he was the type of man who would give someone the shirt off his back. “He was a great historian, he loved to garden, and he truly loved The Lutheran Home at Topton. He loved the people, the staff, and especially his doctor.” Sweigart says Bill was a quiet man, always pleasant and especially thankful. “He would tell me how grateful he was, and that he would pray and mention his blessings every day. He would tell me how good God had been to him.” The Sotes decided to shower those blessings on others as their final act of kindness and gratitude. In this pre-2008 photograph, William Sote poses with an antique car. “We are delighted to receive this generous gift,” says MaryEllen Dickey, Diakon’s senior vice president of Advancement, “and commend the Sotes for the foresight they had in assisting an organization that was so much a part of their late years.” The value of the trust established to benefit Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries is $1.5 million, with the organization receiving an annual distribution from the trust. Initial distributions will be used as “seed money” for eventual renovation and preservation of Old Main on The Lutheran Home at Topton campus. Draft plans call for use of the building to provide meeting and other space, including a history room, to benefit residents of the senior living community.
