PAGE 4 T HE O B S E R V E R ’ S S T A ND VOLUME 56, ISSUE 3 Notes from the Editor— Simi Ritch RE-ality Check By Dave Brown Well another racing season is coming close to it’s end. People are starting to think about what they will be doing next year. Our households new challenge is to replace the race car we’ve been driving for the past 5 years with a new one. This has included in the past week putting it back to stock (remember we autox, not road race so this is possible), putting feelers out there for it’s sale and scouring eBay for the new race car as well as for a new daily driver since the old race car served both purposes. There’s an old saying…Time flies when you’re having fun. That’s pretty appropriate for any SCCA member and you could surmise that its accurate to substitute “racing” for “having fun”. Of course on the other hand if you don’t happen to be racing the time drags on and on. For me this season ha been the latter. Unfortunately as the season creeps towards the end it seems another racing season has passed without much participation by me. Oh I got out on the track… For 5 laps before I broke in a warm up session at our PDX. But here is the kicker to that. It’s OK as the older I get the less I care about being a driver and the more I care about working. Its something that years back I would have never considered. Among all this it’s also time to start thinking about the program for next year since the Solo Chief position is open. I am kind of crazy and like to give everything a try at least once… that said, I have been the OVR Secretary for 4 years now as well as having gotten through one year of publishing the magazine (even if I only published 3 issues!). So now I am looking at a new challenge but in order to do it well I am giving up the other responsibilities I have had. The Observers Stand Editorship and Secretary position within OVR’s officer ranks are both going to be open for 2011, and I will be taking on Solo Co Chair with another avid Auto-x’r Gary Nolan. Even though the racing season is coming to an end I look forward to participating in the events that commemorate the end of the season, nominations socializer, elections socializer, and the year end banquet. All these events are fun relaxed opportunities to see familiar faces without worrying about if the car is ready to run or all the work stations are covered and any of the other “joys” that are involved with the chaos of a regular race weekend. Hope to see many of you out at these upcoming events and also look forward to participating in the club in a different capacity in 2011. At this time we have around 600 members of this region and probably half come out and participate in some way. To those others please consider coming out and working an event. The friends I’ve made in SCCA are the ones I want to spend time with even on off weekends. The race weekends are truly memorable. As I write this we’ve finished our Club Racing season and are actively planning next years events. We were blessed by the racing Gods this year as our weather was great and when there was rain it was brief. Can I order that again for next year? The Runoffs® are finished and lets just say OVR cleaned up. We had multiple drivers win the Super Sweeps and beyond that we had multiple drivers win their races as well. Be sure to come to the Awards Banquet in January to see who wins even more hard- ware. Our Competition Committee is going to have quite the job sorting all this out. OVR held it’s second PDX in September and while the numbers were light the experience of those attending was great. We will continue next year in hosting these events as I firmly believe this is where our future club racers will come from. In fact I put my money where my mouth is on that fact. Tune in next season to see what I mean. Throughout the summer there were ample opportunities to see each other and one of the best was the socializer at Huntington Park for the Clippers game. We had more than 50 people turn up and all got to see a great ballgame. Our next socializer is nominations and be sure to show up for November’s event as we elect new officers and board members as well as a new Regional Executive. Yes for me the months are winding down and as those days wind up I’ll be ready to hand the keys over. While it has truly been my pleasure to serve as your Regional Executive for the past 2 years I am ready to step of the podium and get a little recharged. This next 6 months will be quite taxing as hockey season has already begun and my son is playing in the Cleveland Suburban Hockey League this season. Unfortunately the time commitment to go back and forth several times a week is already taking its toll. That little thing called the OVR Fall Sprints was this weekend and I was at 5 different ice rinks in Columbus and Cleveland. In some respects its much like us racers; we go where the competition is. See you soon. VOLUME 56, ISSUE 3 T HE O B S E R V E R ’ S S T A ND Social Update Don’t forget Elections are coming up! There is only one more points race and a fun run to go to finish out the season. It also marks the end of my run as solo chairman as I will be stepping down from the position at the end of the year. I wish that also meant that I was slowing down, but with all three boys in sports, the twins in cub scouts, and increased pressures at work, I don’t feel like I am able to devote the amount of effort to the program that I have in the past. It is time to get some new perspective into the solo chairman position. This does not mean I’m leaving the club or the solo program. I am still an active member of the Board of Directors, my intent is to work on the karts over the winter to get them up to a national competition standard, and we really need to work out the bugs around our PDX program. I’m also hoping to get more involved in club racing again whether as a corner worker, or perhaps as a helping hand for someone’s crew. For whoever or however we structure the race chairman position for next year, know that I will be there to lend a hand.(Just not every race weekend!) But enough about me, I want to congratulate the folks who represented OVR out at the solo nationals. By my count we had about 23 competitors showing OVR as their home region with many doing very well in their classes. I also would like to congratulate Mike Feher for bringing the Governor’s cup back to OVR this year in a hotly contested event that included just about every weather element except snow! Now in the past few years we have had a few HOT Governor’s Cups. When we found that we could not secure any mid summer two day events at OSU we decided to move the event back a few weeks to allow our National’s competitors to get home and take part in the event. What we didn’t count on was a high of 50 degrees and on /off misting rain almost all day! At least it did start drying out during the run off portion of the event. Of course on Monday after the event it was sunny and 65 degrees!!!! I do want to thank all of the competitors and volunteers who stayed and worked the run off portion of the event. I think everyone was chilled to the bone, so we really appreciate you folks sticking it out to the end. I also want to thank Aaron and Simi Ritch for picking out the printed OVR equipment bags we were able to present to our top run off competitors. They were both original and useful which is hard to do when picking out awards. Finally I want to wrap up by pointing out that our solo attendance was way down this year. I do not know if this is because of the venues we run at, the economy, the schedule (Which seemed like it conflicted with EVERYTHING this year) or people being unhappy with the program. To me, it reiterates the importance of careful planning to keep the program in the financial black as we move forward. Steps we took budgeting at the beginning of the year to reduce costs have helped keep the program in positive cash flow, but it is very close this year. At the same time we have new cones and a new timing system that will grow with us that we squeezed in and paid for this year. In addition to watching where and how we spend out entry fees, we have gained new support from Rhino flooring as a sponsor and continue to have great support from Brian and Neva at Autobody Specialists as a sponsor. We need to continue to find new ways to innovate the program to entice new people to come out to run with us and retain the interest of our long time members. I look forward to the future of the program and will be there to support it any way I can. I wanted to be a participant rather than just a spectator at the race. I decided to pursue to possibility of being a worker at the race. I had worked many races in the US and in my racing travels I had met people from England and France to work races in the US. I decided to see if I could work at the LeMans Classic in France. The local SCCA was very helpful in giving leads as to who to contact. Most of these people said they did not help my cause but they did by giving me insight into the international racing process. Jude Summers hooked me up with the national SCCA office in Topeka where Deanna Flanagan was helpful. I spoke with Robin Jones at ACCUS. Randy Holton knew some people who had been there before and those contacts told me who to contact in France. I found out that the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO) puts on the race. This the Wikipedia definition: The Automobile Club de l'Ouest (Automobile Club of the West - referring to the western region of France), sometimes abbreviated to ACO, is the largest automotive group in France. It was founded in 1906 by car building and racing enthusiasts, and is most famous for being the organising entity behind the annual Le Mans 24 Hours race. The ACO also lobbies on behalf of French drivers on such issues as road building and maintenance, the availability of driving schools and road safety classes, and the incorporation of tech- nical innovations into new vehicles. It also runs a roadside assistance service for its members. The easy part was to fill out an application on the ACO web site. Several e-mails were sent back and forth trying to satisfy the ACO requirements. I sent them copies of my membership and worker license. I followed up a letter from the SCCA saying that I was a member in good standing. The ACO was very accommodating as worker registration had already been closed a month. However I did not get any confirmation, so I thought it was not going to happen. On July 1 and I left for France to join up with the car club tour. I sent ACO an email from the hotel asking about my worker status. They said that I was on the schedule as a pit marshal. That was good but I did not find out until later that they mailed worker information, credentials, parking and admission passes to my house. I arrived at the track the Thursday evening July 8. Once at the track I was looking for a registration desk and I did not see one. I went to several offices trying to get information, which if I spoke good French would have been very helpful. However, I think that even a French speaker who is unfamiliar with racing would also have a problem. I was on the list so they were very gratious to give me a do over and made another credential pack.. The next day I had to go across the street to the Expo Center, a big fairground complex, to get my credentials. VOLUME 56, ISSUE 3 T HE O B S E R V E R ’ S S T A ND PAGE 14 VOLUME 56, ISSUE 3 T HE O B S E R V E R ’ S S T A ND All the pit marshals had to attend a briefing in a room under the grandstands. The French are very punctual, everything started and ended on time. First thing we did was check in, then everybody shook hands with one another. Then a 25 minute speech by the chief, Alan Tannier, as to what and how the various assignments were to be performed. The chief introduced me to the group as the American who came all that way to work the race. I stood up and they gave me a warm welcome and some jokes at my expense. I was originally scheduled to work Pit-out. The worker chief reorganized the schedule to accommodate me and workers who had cancelled. I was paired with , Charles Queguiner, an IT professor at University of Rennes, who spoke pretty good English. We were assigned to the grid. I was happy with that because I certainly did not want to be in a situation in the pit lane where safety would be compromised. Everyone worked a total of eight hours and had two day shifts and one night shift. After the meeting the Chief took me on the grand tour of race control and pit/stands control. It was quite impressive with monitors watching every corner of the track. I was introduced to the race director Daneil Poissenot. People were showing what their jobs were, what kind of information they were recording on the computers and so forth. Everyone I came in contact with was very friendly and accommodating. Le Mans is a huge facility with two tracks, the permanent Bigatti course which is 4185m 2.51 miles. The other is a temporary course for the Classic and 24-hour course, which is 13629m 8.177 miles. Many large grandstands, suites, long pit and paddock areas. Charles took me on a tour pointing out safety issues and points of interest. He showed me the tunnels under the track for workers use, where safety equipment was located etc. There is an ACO worker café in the grandstands. I saw many interesting things such as the Porsche, fitted with a camera to film the Le Mans movie. The Classic is a historic race and is a huge event for car enthusiasts, drawing people from all over Europe. There were 94 car club corrals. The Porsche corral was the biggest and had about 1,000 cars. PAGE 15 Prior to the 4 pm start of the race, people could buy laps on the track. There were several time periods available and a large number of people took advantage of the opportunity to drive this famous track. I would consider the laps as hot laps rather than pace laps. I was able to hitch a ride with Roland Jaeckel in a DeTomaso Longchamps and on the straights we did a very respectable 200km/120mph and we did 3 laps. His experience driving the autobahn was evident. It was chaotic as there were fast cars and slow cars. There did not seem to be anything to control the pace. Apparently the rule was to drive as fast as you wanted to, traffic permitting. The drivers had to be very aware of traffic around them, the course flagers could only watch as the high speed traffic jam passed them. The Le Mans Classic is a historic race with cars that actually raced in the 24 hr race. It is a 24 hour race starting 4 pm Saturday to 4 pm Sunday. The Classic is not an endurance race so the field is set up for 6 groups based on the years the car raced. The format was that each of the six groups got three 90 min sessions which totals 24 hrs. Each group got two day and one night session. Actual track sessions are 43 minutes as they did track maintenance between groups. Grids and the years of the cars: Grid 1 1923-1939 Grid 2 1949-1956 Grid 3 1957-1961 Grid 4 1962-1965 Grid 5 1966-1971 Grid 6 1972-1979 What my job on the grid was to record the number on the drivers wristband and the car, check for safety items, glove, helmet inspection sticker. There are strict rules about how long a driver can race and there has to have more than one driver during the race. The car then grids based on race times. This process repeated for each session. The Classic Race started at 4 pm Saturday with grid 3. The race order were grids 3,4,5,6,1and 2. The race ended at 4 pm Sunday with grid 2 on the track. This race weekend was a great experience. The next 24hrs du LeMans is June 11-12 2011. Hummm. VOLUME 56, ISSUE 3 T HE O B S E R V E R ’ S S T A ND The September OVR PDX- By Mary Jane Berchak The Ohio Valley Region’s second PDX was held Friday September 3 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The day started out cool and cloudy with the threat of rain. Ken Berchak, the Chief Driving Instructor said before the event that he hoped it did rain so that the students could gain some experience in rain driving. After registration, while the cars were undergoing tech inspection, the instructors met to cover the schedule and the points that were important to the operation of the event. The instructors were drawn from OVR’s group of race licensed drivers with other regions contributing some officials and instructors. Since SCCA is just beginning to hold PDX events, it has been customary for regions to pitch in and help each other recruit instructors. This was followed by a Driver’s Meeting attended by all of the officials, instructors and students. Students were assigned into three groups. There were novices with very little if any track experience, intermediates with some experience and advanced students with a lot of experience in PDX type events. Students were paired with instructors before anyone got on track. The first group to head to the track were the advanced students and the instructors. Advanced students are not REQUIRED to have an in-car instructor, but are paired with an instructor in another car so that the instructor can observe the student. Meanwhile, the novice students were off to the classroom to meet with R. B. Wright for lessons on the meaning of the flags, the descriptions of the passing and non-passing zones on the track, a chance to go through the MID-OHIO school manual (The Mid-Ohio School graciously gave permission for OVR to copy and use their manual.) Subsequent classroom sessions addressed student questions, and all the items still remaining in RB’s list of things to be discussed. The track sessions were 20 minutes at a time. The classroom sessions varied according to the material to be covered. The second track session was for the intermediate students with instructors in-car for at least the first session. Later in the day, some of the intermediate students were judged to be competent to go on track without their instructor. Meanwhile, the novices were still in the classroom. The third session saw the novices, each with an instructor in the car get a chance to go on track for their 20 minutes. Then all of the students got a break as the Pro F2000 cars had a practice session. Back to another round of student sessions in the classroom and on the track before the lunch break. All during this time, it is getting colder and starting to sprinkle. The students did get a chance to experience some high performance rain time. As a matter of fact, the first session after lunch was held in the pouring rain. We had rooster tails at a PDX. The afternoon schedule was a repeat of the morning schedule except that some of the classroom time was deemed not necessary since everything had been covered. By the end of the day, each of the students had experienced 80 minutes of on-track time, a lot of time in post session discussions, some had classroom instruction and if their comments are to be believed, they were tired, excited and glad that they had come. It's now close to the middle of October and the OVR RallyX season only has two events left on Oct 16th and Oct 30th. Both events will be held in Lot "F" at National Trail Raceway in Hebron Ohio. Looking back on the previous two events since the last RallyX update, the August 7th event was a lot of fun at Paintball Country. WOR put on a great event with a very fun course. As with most RallyX events this year it was a dust bowl event, but the competitors had a lot of fun and so did the event organizers. The big event for OVR was the Sept 25-26th National Challenge. Good turn out and excellent courses made this a very fun event. We did hit a small bump along the way when the owner of National Trail Raceway had us move the event across the street due to (once again) dusty conditions. Unfortunately for us the wind happened to be blowing the exact wrong direction and getting some dust over the trees into the drag strip. Once moved the event continued without a hitch. Big thanks to all the members who helped put on the event as well as Dan's Deli for helping with the food. RallyX would also like to thank the AutoX group for lending us their timing system. One big plus in my mind, usually the event runs smooth and then complaints are heard later on forums or through e-mail. So far I haven't heard a single complaint about how the event ran or the courses. Here's hoping for another great National Challenge next year! As mentioned earlier we have two more events coming up. The Oct 16th event will be a regular event with a challenge event at the end. sigmaTec Automotive has sponsored a challenge for 2wd and 4wd cars as a run off style event for certificates good towards automotive work. After the regular event all cars wishing to participate will be split into their respective groups and the track will be altered into a circle. Two cars will be on track, positioned at opposite sides. They will drive around the track and the first one back to their starting point will win and advance to the second round. I don't know about you, but I'm really looking forward to competing in a heads up style event like this. The final event of the year will be on Oct 30th. This will be the last regular points event of the season. The two RallyX chairs, myself and Mike Paktinat will be switching places with Mike being the primary and myself being the secondary. The event will work exactly the same as usual with the end result being more people that are trained to run the event from start to finish. After Oct comes the awards ceremony in January and bench racing season through March so don't miss out on these last two opportunities to get dirty at OVR! He has nothing on Dick Greer, 78, of Columbus, Ohio. Greer spent Monday morning racing his 1990 Corvette around Grattan Raceway’s 2-mile road course in the rain, competing against guys almost a third his age. Greer almost beat them, too. Ryan McManus, 29, of Westfield Center, Ohio, was able to nose out Greer by .067 of a second to win the 23-lap GT1 race, which was included in this weekend’s Sports Car Club of America Double National. Surprisingly, that race wasn’t even the most interesting part of the weekend for Greer, who was still talking about what happened Friday after Monday’s race. “We bought an Indy Car and drove it around Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Friday,” Greer said. “It is a 1960 car that was in the race, a beautiful red. After the Indy Lights were done and before the pit stop competition, they let us out there.” This weekend’s two-day show drew more than 130 cars in 12 different races, and within those races, there were a combined 58 divisions of competition. Weather proved to be a challenge, as heavy rainstorms passed through the area early Monday morning, soaking the track. However, the show goes on in the SCCA. Drivers just slapped rain slicks on their cars and went racing. The rain began to let up just in time for the first race, which saw McManus’ Ford Mustang nip Greer at the finish. “Dick had me, “McManus said. “The only place I thought I could get any kind of run on Dick at all, and it happened three times during the race, was coming out of the hairpin up onto the front straightaway. The car was handling really well. I didn’t need to use the brakes there. PAGE 22 T HE O B S E R V E R ’ S S T A ND VOLUME 56, ISSUE 3 “I was able to get a pretty good run up on his. If it was one more lap, he would have gotten around me again. He gave me room. He could have wrecked me on the grass. He could have made it a lot more difficult.” The rain certainly didn’t slow Greer. It actually was a benefit for him. McManus beat Greer by nearly 27 seconds Saturday in dry conditions. Greer’s Corvette was previously raced in the SCCA Trans-Am Series by championship-winning driver Paul Gentilozzi of Lansing. “I like the rain,” Greer said. “It gives me a little advantage, I guess, because I’m an old man and I have done a lot racing in the rain. It’s like it is driving on the street. You have to watch what you are doing or you will hydroplane right off the road.” McManus stuck his head into Greer’s Corvette after both drivers completed tech inspection to congratulate him. “The strategy was if I could stay with Dick, I knew I was doing pretty good,” McManus said. “With five to go, my only shot was coming up that hill." As the racing season comes to an end the board and race committee gets a lot of feedback from those who have attended our races. As always OVR’s tradition for great races continues. Many thanks to all the workers and volunteers who help OVR to put on such great events! Name: Peter Gresock Message: Just wanted to express how enjoyable this past weekend was at the Fall Sprints that you hosted at the Mid-Ohio track. The event was run extremely well and I was impressed with how well organized your event was. I want to also mention that the two gentlemen ( excuse me not remembering their names ) that announced the races were great! Please pass on my congratulations on a job well done. Oh one more thing who ever was in charge of the weather thank them too. Sincerely, Gresock Racing Pete Gresock member 233626 Racing is Hard Work. Above: Willy Church & Rusty Bell take a break. I have completed about 60 races over the years, and also worked as an SOM for about twelve years-mostly Nationals and Pro events such as Can-Am and F5000. From my first contact with Gloria Sheets in doing a last minute entry, to going through the sign-in at Registration upon arrival which was very fast and efficient, I was impressed with how well things were organized. Then as part of my package I received a sheet clarifying the meaning of certain flags with emphasis placed on non-contact between cars (which seems to have been forgotten over the years) which I was impressed with, and then the extremely efficient crew where, for the first time ever, my safety equipment including closure of my nomex collar, helmet strap, and Hans device--even down to the tightness of my shoulder harness-- was checked by one or two people each time I came to the false grid. Wow! I am truly impressed! The schedule was also adhered to as much as possible, the Tech people were fast and efficient, and when I missed the pit entry after my first practice (not having been there in many years) there were pit personnel there to guide me into a U-turn without any fuss or bother. From the superb corner workers to everyone else involved in putting on the event, thank you very much for a great job.
