Newsletter for Brecksville-Broadview Hts. School Community Winter 2014 www.bbhcsd.org CITE Center Opened in January The Center for Innovation and Technology in Education (CITE), a space dedicated to professional development to help teachers incorporate nextgeneration teaching methods and technology in their classes recently opened. Existing space at the Middle School that previously housed the Stepping Stones Preschool (now at Hilton Elementary School) and originally was used for locker rooms was reconfigured as classrooms and meeting space for staff. Through professional development efforts coordinated at CITE, teachers will expand their use of inquiry, project-based learning, differentiation and intervention strategies with students without leaving the district. Through the Strategic Vision process, the district embraced an increased focus on preparing students for their futures. It is no longer sufficient for students to simply recall, describe and explain factual information. The successful learner must apply, analyze and evaluate information and combine it with ideas in innovative ways to create new solutions to complex problems. At the same time, teachers are enhancing their use of technology to prepare and deliver instruction and monitor student progress. In a technology-rich world where many students are connected with computers and mobile devices, schools must take advantage of those resources to foster learning. Bringing the technology resources of the district into the same space with instructional coaches and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) coordinators will help the district better leverage existing technology in ways that benefit all students. Kindergarten Registration – March 18 & 19 Kindergarten registration for the 2014-15 school year will be held on Tuesday, March 18, from 8 AM to 4 PM, and on Wednesday, March 19 from noon to 8 PM. While many in northeastern Ohio found this snowy and cold winter to be too much, students at Highland Drive Elementary School enjoyed playing outdoors in the snow at recess. Winter Weather Impacts Ohio Achievement Assessments Due to the number of days schools across Ohio were closed this winter because of inclement weather, the Ohio Department of Education expanded the window for administration of the Ohio Achievement Assessments (OAA). While always concerned about the safety of students on bad weather days, Brecksville-Broadview Heights School Superintendent Scot Prebles shared with state leaders and other educators his concern about missed instructional time and the need to prepare students for the assessments. He supports the decision to move the testing back one week. Consequently, students in grades 3-8 in our district will take their OAA exams the week of May 5-9 rather than the week of April 28 – May 2, as previously announced and printed in the PSO calendar. The scoring and reporting of the Third Grade Reading OAA by the Department of Education will be made a priority to fulfill the Third Grade Reading Guarantee requirements. The week of May 12 will be the make-up week for students who were absent for testing. School Calendar for 2014-2015 The school calendar for the 2014-15 school year was approved in December by the Board of Education and is now posted on the district’s website. School Notes 2010 BBHHS graduate Mary Guido was one of only 60 people from across the country selected to live-tweet the State of the Union Address from the Eisenhower Building in Washington DC. After the address, Guido and the others were able to ask questions of a panel of White House administrators. She is now a senior at Ohio State majoring in Strategic Communication and German. Joshua Dietrich, Sabrine Djemil, Heidi Van Valkenburgh, Aashna Waiwood and Adam Yaseen, members of BBHHS Class of 2014, have advanced from the status of National Merit Semifinalists to National Merit Finalists for 2014. These academically talented students will continue to compete for National Merit and other scholarships. Senior citizens lunches and programs will continue each month for the remainder of the school year. Seniors are invited to Chippewa Elementary School on March 13, Highland Drive Elementary School on April 3, the high school on May 1 and Hilton Elementary School on May 22. The cost of the luncheon including beverage is $3. Please call the Senior Centers to make your reservations. Linda at Brecksville: 440-526-2499 and Amy at Broadview Heights: 440-526-4685. 2011 BBHHS grad Dan Lemmer represented the Cleveland Cavaliers and The Wheelchair Cavaliers at the NBA All-Star weekend in February. Dan was selected by the National Wheelchair Basketball Association. His team also won the championship in 2010 and he received a championship ring from Cavs owner Dan Gilbert. Hilton teachers Kelly Allar (Kindergarten) and Karen Graham (3rd grade) brought their students together to work on a joint project. Each younger student was asked to select a favorite winter Olympic sport. Then with assistance of a third grader, a descriptive sentence was written and memorized about the sport. Using Tellagami, a free iOS app, the students created customized characters performing the sport. Each pair of students recorded their sentence. Using the app, media specialist Beth Blaustein combined the character and sentences of all the students in a short animated movie called “Gami.” In this photo with Kelly Allar, Kindergarten teacher, are Abhinav Kambhampati and Nemi Kapur.
