beach. Sounds like I’m getting a bit
nostalgic here in our 20° degrees and
sunny winter.
The Scandinavian Film Festival has just
ended with lots of opportunities to
watch movies that admittedly are a bit
different from normal cinema fare. The
Swedish movie ‘The Hundred Year-Old
Man Who Climbed Out of the Window
and Disappeared’ will be in cinemas
from 21 August and is very enjoyable.
We are busy preparing for the 2014
Scandinavian Festival and are keen to
hear from you if you would like to
volunteer to work a couple of hours
either setting up or packing up, baking
æbleskiver, making soft ice, hot dogs,
smørrebrød – we need you. It takes
many volunteers to make a successful
festival and we hope you’ll join up to
help the club.
Denmark is enjoying one of those
wonderful summers this year where it’s
actually warm and beautiful – and

Come visit Café Danmark and meet up with new and old friends. The
‘smørrebrød’ menu varies from time to time, but you’ll usually find
‘rullepølse’ (spicy rolled pork), smoked salmon, roast beef, ‘leverpostej’,
roast pork and ‘Esrom’ cheese on the menu. And hot dogs. The bar
offers Tuborg and Carlsberg beer varieties imported from Denmark – just
now we have Tuborg Christmas Brew (‘Julebryg’). If you like a glass of
wine with your food, we have a good variety of whites, reds and sparkling
on offer. Faxe Kondi, Tuborg Super Light and Faxe non-alcoholic beer is
also available. And then check out our tempting selection of Danish
licorice, chocolates and other goodies!
It’s also an opportunity to buy delicious Danish pastries, rye bread and

Britt’s Organic Bakery. Tea offers smallgoods and quality meats from
Heinz Meats, the Danish butcher at Woolloongabba, as well as her own
goodies including remoulade. Order in advance and pick up at the café.

Annoyingly, the search results keep changing and it may prove difficult to

Dansk Legegruppe
Vores danske legegruppe mødes hver fredag i Heimdals lokaler fra 9.30 til kl 11.30.
Aldersgruppen er fra 0 til 5 år, søskende til yngre børn er selvfølgelig velkommen i ferierne.
Vi starter altid med formiddagskaffe og hjemmebagte boller, efterfølgende varierer
aktiviteterne med fri leg, hoppeborg, tegning og sanglege mv. Vi skiftes til at medbringe
boller og tilbehør.
Vi betaler $2 hver gang per familie, medlemskab af Playgroup Queensland og den danske
klub Heimdal er en betingelse.

Georg Arthur Jensen (born 31 August 1866,
Rådvad, Denmark – died 2 October 1935,
Copenhagen) was a Danish silversmith.
Born in 1866, Jensen was the son of a knife
grinder in the town of Raadvad just to north of
Copenhagen. Jensen began his training in
goldsmithing at the age of 14 in Copenhagen. His
apprenticeship with the firm Guldsmed Andersen
ended in 1884, and this freed young Georg to
follow his artistic interests.
From childhood, Jensen had longed to be a
sculptor and he now pursued this course of study
at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He graduated
in 1892 and began exhibiting his work. Although
his clay sculpture was well received, making a
living as a fine artist proved difficult and he turned
his hand to the applied arts. First as a modeller at the Bing & Grøndahl porcelain
factory and, beginning in 1898, with a small pottery workshop he founded in
partnership with Christian Petersen. Again the work was well received, but sales were
not strong enough to support Jensen, by this point a widower, and his two small sons.
In 1901, he abandoned ceramics and began again as a silversmith and designer with
the master, Mogens Ballin. This led Jensen to make a landmark decision, when in
1904, he risked what small capital he had and opened his own little silversmithy at 36
Bredgade in Copenhagen.
Jensen's training in metalsmithing along with his education in the fine arts allowed
him to combine the two disciplines and revive the tradition of the artist craftsman.
Soon, the beauty and fine quality of his Art Nouveau creations caught the eye of the
public and his success was assured. The Copenhagen quarters were greatly
expanded and before the end of the 1920s, Jensen had opened retail outlets as far
ranging as New York, London, Paris, Stockholm, and Berlin.
Georg Jensen died in 1935, but in the preceding years he imbued the firm with his
strongly held ideals concerning both artistry in design and excellence in craftmanship,
this tradition has been adhered to throughout the twentieth century. Although Jensen
himself was a proponent of the Art Nouveau style,
he had the wisdom and foresight to allow his
designers their own freedom of expression which
expanded the stylistic scope of what the firm
produced and allowed it to keep step with time.

Jensen signed his first sculpture with "My Father"
(1887). In 1894 he used his initials GJ as his
mark. In most cases the year was put next to the
brand sign.

Brisbane City Council recently awarded The Danish Club a grant to improve access for
wheelchairs, and having completed the project, it was time for the official opening by
our local councillor, David McLachlan pictured below with Soren.
We have a couple of members requiring wheelchair access and have over the last
months had a number of successful trials of our new fancy ramps, and all works
satisfactory.
A big thank you to the BCC for supporting the club by making us wheelchair friendly.

Easter Monday Oda (Sussie) Nielsen
died after a long battle with debilitating
illness. Sussie was born on 16/12/31 in
København (Denmark) and arrived in
Australia in 1971. After many years
working in Brisbane in hospitality,
Sussie and her husband Henning retired
to Redcliffe. She is survived by her
husband and sons Allan and Glenn.
Borgen Third (and last) series starts on
SBS on Wednesday 30 July at 9:30 pm.
Our membership hit the 250 mark this
year. Very impressive. Now we need
everyone to renew. Don’t forget to pay
your membership fees by 22 July
2014 to participate in the prize draw

Lars Vester to showcase ‘New Farm in a Different Light’ at
Brisbane Modern Art Gallery
Solo Exhibition
August 12-23
Brisbane artist Lars Vester‘s latest series of paintings titled ‘New Farm in a Different
Light’ has been selected for a solo exhibition at Brisbane Modern Art Gallery.
Lars Vester is an artist widely known for his ability to bring ordinary subjects to life
with his unique use of light, and his tireless support of the homeless via The Micah
Projects from the sales of his charity art greeting cards. His first major solo
exhibition in Brisbane opens August 11.
In his latest series of works, Lars Vester explores the daily life in the popular area of
New Farm, through his mesmerising use of light and textures.
Danish born Lars Vester has lived and worked in Brisbane since 2006, and has
since become an integral part of the Brisbane Art Scene. His work has been
recognised at art awards such as The Clayton Utz Art Award and the Lethbridge
10000 Art Awards. His previous series of paintings titled ‘West End in a Different
Light’ sold out within weeks, and the reproductions of the original works and art
greeting cards continue to be popular. Regarding his success, Vester stated “I am
really pleased that my work has been so well received in the community over the
years. I would like to think of this series as not only art pieces, but a record of our
history, moments in time”. With regard to his upcoming solo exhibition, Lars Vester
stated “I’m thrilled to be able to unveil this particular body of work to the public in a
beautiful new modern gallery with a strong connection to New Farm.”
The Brisbane Modern Art Gallery is located at 483 Brunswick Street, right at the
centre of the Valley arts district, showcasing the work of some of Australia’s most
talented emerging, mid career and established artists. They are open Tuesday –

Membership Membership has reached 250, just in time for renewals. Many young
families joining, but also many young families heading home from Australia. We’ll
have a prize for membership payments made by 22 July 14 to be drawn at the July
Café.
Maintenance Kitchen nearly finished and Alan will be painting everything over the
coming weeks. Brisbane City Council kitchen inspection scheduled for mid-July.
Toilets are again causing problems and the plumber spent most of a day cleaning
out nappies, panty liners, wipes, sanitary pads and other bits and pieces from the
drain. New tiles in the entry had to be removed to gain access. Investigating ways
to prevent the build up from occurring again, but it has been an ongoing problem
for many many years. New LED lights have been installed in the toilets.
Events Decided to cancel Christmas in July event (12/7) and no ideas for August
event (9/8) at this stage.
Money The final accounts for 2013/14 show a surplus of approx. $6,000 which is
very satisfactory. Stock supplies are high.
Scandinavian Festival 2014 Great opportunity for the club to generate income
and we’ll be working hard to achieve the best result. Good interest from new stall
holders and many stalls from previous year are returning. Danish club will donate
prize to raffle, Lone will put on her thinking cap.
Swiss Club is moving out. After having used our hall as their club premises since
1998, their financial situation no longer allows them to continue.
